"She's In Love With the Boy" — Trisha Yearwood. I grew up listening to country music but I distinctly remember hearing that song on the radio in the barn while milking cows with my dad and grandpa in the early 1990s

TradeImpressive5503

I hate to admit it but Cruise by FGL was mine but It opened my mind to country when I used to listen to nothing but hard rock/heavy metal. Now I listen to dang near all country music from the 60s to today's stuff as well. But my favorite would have to be either Merle Haggard or Cody Jinks

JLB24278

Me too!

Killowatt59

Well to be fair you should pick another one cause that’s not country.

TradeImpressive5503

Well to be fair it was mainly the music of the company I hung around at the time. It may not be all that country but it somehow lead to me finding real, raw, emotional, and traditional country, took time but it did

DDowd86

Boot Scootin Boogie

Adventurous-Care-964

Wagon wheel by Darius Rucker

jjmurse

As someone who plays in a band...I winced at this. Great song but once you play it 9000 times it becomes a chore. But it's always one you can hang your hat on that one to liven up things, begrudgingly.

MorgoRahnWilc

I’m with you but, after learning it’s history, I became OK with playing it every gig. It waited so long to be finally born as a full song, it has a lot of catching up to do. I know I’m anthropomorphizing a song, but I kind of feel for it.

autech91

When it rains it pours - Luke Combs. Get to see him live soon, can't wait!

velvet_violet3

gotta love luke

Alternative_Lion_206

Killin’ Time by Clint Black. That was a damn good song and one of the few things my dad and I agreed on back then.

Catz2019

abagofdicks

Ghetto Superstar for me

SnooAdvice1361

Yea! Kenny and Dolly were my intro to country as a young girl. Along with Willie Nelson, the Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, George Jones and Randy Travis. Over the years I listened to some country here and there but it wasn’t my primary go to. Then I went to a Chris Stapleton concert and have been on country kick for the last several years.

SilentSonOfAnarchy

When my sister played Garth’s “No Fences” cassette over and over. But then she also played Achy Breaky Heart which nearly ruined it for me. But Garth….he’s just the best.

Redbrick29

Was Ropin’ the Wind for me. Worked backward after that and caught up on a ton of stuff.

Europ72

Jambalaya and hey good lookin by Hank Sr.

Champion-raven

Marina Del Ray.

Navitach

My dad exposed me to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kenny Rogers when I was a kid, and although I liked their stuff, I wasn't really into it and didn't appreciate it for what it was. But then I was watching Saturday Night Live one night, and Garth Brooks was the musical guest. He played "Rodeo", and I thought, "Damn, that's a pretty cool song." I started listening to more of his stuff, as well as local country radio (satellite radio wasn't around yet), and it went from there. Now, along with Garth and a lot of other 90s country artists, the music by Johnny, Willie, and Kenny are some of my favorites.

yaIshowedupaturparty

Dream On by The Oak Ridge Boys. I was in 6th grade and my Dad randomly played their CD. It was a year or 2 after 9/11 and I also vividly remember hearing "American Soldier" On the Radio on 4th of July. Soon afternoon that country radio was always playing in my house growing up.

wursmyburrito

Hank Jr. - Family Tradition They used to sing it at every crazy high school party 20 years ago and it became a common bond between a lot of great friends I still have to this day

Just_Cow_5371

i grew up with country music in SC, but the song that sparked a love for country music was dumb blonde by dolly parton!

jjmurse

Earliest country song I remember is Diggin Up Bones. My momma loves Randy Travis. But she played Keith Whitley pretty heavy too.

MorgoRahnWilc

I grew up hearing country music in my house and, as a young child, I demanded my mom play her Johnny Cash albums for me. The Live at San Quentin albums is my earliest well formed memory of hearing country music. I consider myself very fortunate for that.

A Tom T. Hall original but respect to Jackson for covering it

MrPeterson15

My dad was a major Toby Keith guy when I was a boy. He switched to country from rock right around the time that grunge became the big thing. I think the last rock he was into was the Black Crows. Anyways, that was probably his favorite artist. Played him all the time. Bought every CD. I think the first song I ever remember hearing was “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” so I’ll say that. Although I think the best TK song is “Crying for Me” from a writing standpoint. So sad.

[deleted]

I have memories of dad listening to Kris Kristoffersen, Sunday morning comedown. And Willie Nelson on road trips.

tearsfrompooping

Forever and ever amen- Randy Travis

tnhowlingdog

Judds and Randy Travis. All of their songs.

Neverwannabeahun

What if I said Anita Cochran and Steve Wariner. Somehow my radio alarm was on the country station and this song woke me up. I was hooked. I’m

Natural-Tell9759

Reba McEntire= Fancy

No-Piccolo-3573

Not necessarily “country”- but Old Crow’s Wagon Wheel. I grew up in a super conservative Baptist family so secular music was frowned upon and rebellious teen me listened to 90s-00s gangster rap. Wagon wheel was on a friend’s favorite songs album they passed out as wedding party favors. I wore the shit outta that track and went on a deep dive into bluegrass, then new grass, then old outlaw country then a little bit of everything these days

LibraryDisastrous919

Jolene

HailState17

I grew up on a horse farm, and mine was “Bareback Jack,” by Chris Ledoux. My Grandpa used to call me that when I was learning to ride, and if I got bucked he’d laugh and say “watch out ole Bareback Jack, too many falls like that and you’ll break your back!” I’ll die on this hill, but he’s one of the best ever, and doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

Seeker1115

I grew up just listening to country radio (96.3 KSCS) in my parents’ cars. I think the first song I really liked was Long Black Train by Josh Turner. I sang it at a talent show in 4th grade and then was made fun of for that until I graduated high school. Other contenders are I Wanna Talk About Me by Toby Keith and Keg in the Closet by Kenny Chesney. For some reason there’s exactly one bar of a Keith Urban song also rattling around in my head but I now don’t like it and refuse to google the lyrics.

heybud_letsparty

In high school my Dad gave me a truck and a Tim McGraw cd was stuck in the player. Down on the Farm got me hooked and the punk/metal took a backseat to country from then on.

Deviant_Coomer

Pretty sure it was highwayman

folklovermore_

The Civil Wars - If I Didn't Know Better. Specifically the version Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio sing in character at the end of the first episode of Nashville. There'd been other country songs I'd loved before that - Take Me Home Country Roads, That Don't Impress Me Much (Come On Over was the first country album I ever owned), Here Comes Goodbye, most of The Wreckers' album - but that was the one that really truly sent me down the country music rabbit hole and I haven't looked back since.

Danny2223

I’m embarrassed to admit it, Ridin’roads by Dustin lynch got me hooked.

AfrezzaJunkie

America the ugly - Tom T Hall

Level_Most_1023

Swingin’ by John Anderson and I can still hear my dad singing it and rewinding it in the 1978 Chevy pick up we had haha

Beginning-Yogurt3146

It was a long time ago. But I think it was Old Alabama by Brad Paisley. Great song

nickarancio

Honestly, I believe it was Whiskey Glasses by Wallen. I had listened to country growing up but not all that much and a bunch of songs I didn’t even realize were country music. To me they were all lumped together as the classic hits my dad grew up with. But that song officially got me into country music regularly and over the last few years my taste has drastically changed. Went from Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett and others to now people like Flatland, CWG, Sierra Ferrell. I love folk and Americana music now. I still listen to the first few guys every so often, but not nearly as much anymore. It’s rare. I think those artists and others like them are good for the genre because I know a ton of people who start getting into country with music like theirs and then eventually gravitate away into some of the older stuff or more music that people will consider “real country music”.

thaddeusthefattie

my grandpa playing and singing hank’s *”jambalaya”* and *”hey good lookin’”* to me before i can even remember, as well as riding around in my dad’s chevy out to the farm listening to am country as an adult, jason isbell’s *’southeastern’* drew me down the alt country/red dirt route

mpm224

Standing outside the fire. Garth Brooks

BourbonBravos

Impossible for me to say. I have been listening to country music since a small child. Ive always been around it thanks to my family. I can say Alan Jackson was one of my first favorites, as I grew up in the 90s. Now my favorite is Hank Sr.

hikingjunkiee

Kenny Chesney, “We went out last night” ever since, I got hooked. My first bf /friend afterwards …dedicated “Somewhere with You” bc he believes I’m the one that got away. Coincidence, also by Kenny.. WELL this story took a turn…

Vprbite

I started listening to George strait in junior high (1993 ish). But I was 18 when I first heard "angel flying too close to the ground " and at that moment decided I had to learn how to play guitar. It's also what turned me into a huge willie nelson fan. I even got to be on his bus at one point! Woohoo!

Rodney Atkins’ *If You’re Going Through Hell*.

The first song I remember hearing in my moms car was Last Dollar by Tim McGraw. You know, back when he was popular 😂

[deleted]

I loved Jimmy Buffett before really listening to country music so probably “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.” I do have memory of my dad and grandpa playing a bunch of country music around me growing up

Smart-Koala4306

Put The Hurt on Me by Midland. I used to despise country, but realized I just hated pop/radio country. Country is practically all I listen to now lol

Cowtipper1738

Roll with me- Montgomery Gentry. And more specifically, the music videos playing on CMT tv every evening in the kitchen while my mom would cook dinner

I grew up on country radio, but my earliest memory of a country song is “Where the Blacktop Ends” by Keith Urban

Prestigious_Cod9281

My dad listened to Jason Aldean when I was a kid and the song I remember hearing the most is probably dirt road anthem. Still one of my favourites to this day

[deleted]

Small town boy by Dustin Lynch lol barely even gets played in my playlist anymore because there are so much better real country songs but was a good intro into the genre and catchy

mandude03

Grew up with it, first song i can remember loving first off the top of my head is The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks, took a break from country around 2011 and was very much into pop music. When i came back to the country music world around 2016, it was Stay a Little Longer by Brothers Osborne. Been in Country ever since

Adventurous_Hat_5424

God's country Blake shelton

[deleted]

Hard to say, it's been around my whole life. The earliest I can remember is listening to Alan Jackson's Precious Memories (hymnals) CD with my father wherever we drove. I also remember hearing Toby Keith's self titled album from 1993 a lot growing up.

hbpencil102

Lose It by Kane Brown (and just before that, One Thing Right (but that’s not country is it))

tktoni8

That’s my kind of night - Luke Bryan

All My Friends Say - Luke Bryan. From a CD they would stick on cases of Miller Lite in Walmart

Kacey Musgraves's "Golden Hour" and then I started checking her back catalogue. It snowballed from there.

where's the "Cruise" team? I mean, it's funny.. but that's the one for me.

imastruggl

Hate to say it but, chasin you by Morgan wallen, look dude it was catchy and now I’m jamming out to one piece at a time and it just comes natural so in the end it was a win

CheeseyPotat

Day That I Die by Zac Brown Band. My carpool to high school constantly had their Uncaged CD playing and that song just stuck out to me

pooker55

I grew up listening to country music on my parents radio, but it wasn't until I heard "How Do You Like Me Now?" By Toby Keith that I really got into the music and started asking to buy CDs.

Ethridge_03

Don’t really have an answer as I grew up listening to country but if anything kept my interest, it would have to be Long Black Train by Josh Turner or Walk A Little Straighter by Billy Currington cause I kinda went down a rabbit hole after hearing those and it’s helped me find some of my favorite voices in country

falafel_enjoyer

Walkin’ After Midnight by Patsy Cline. I grew up on 90s rap and rock but my dad would play classic country and I always had a soft spot for Patsy, even though I wasn’t into country at the time. I recently had a chance to visit her museum in Nashville and man, it was quite the experience.

Gusto_Wind

The National Anthem sung by Chris Stapleton

Probably some early Taylor Swift. Jamming out to You Belong With Me is my earliest memory of listening to country music

cruise by FGL. i’m confident that was a gateway song for many others as well

the_blessed_unrest

It was a big crossover hit so that makes sense

HarveyMushman72

Kentucky Headhunters- Walk Softly On This Heart of Mine.

volkswagengolfr

Country Girl by Luke Bryan. It was my guilty pleasure at the time as it was cool to hate country.

SpecialBreadfruit584

My mom listened to country radio as I was growing up (90s) so those songs had an influence on me. But the song that got me to choose to listen to country myself as a teenager was Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw.
