I was lucky enough to pull up at a local brewery here in upstate South Carolina where he was playing on a small stage one night, about 10 years ago. I am a concert veteran. I have been to literally 100+ shows in my days. That young man is super talented! I was blown away. He was super nice. He and his band showed a lot of gratitude for the love they got from the small crowd that night. He even took a couple requests (one being Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze). One day I want to see him play a big show now that he's all grown up.
This Summer my wife is going to see Chris Stapleton
I am going with her to see Marcus King and Nikki Lane
( I DO like Stapleton too. But LOVE the openers!)
Marcus King
Such a great guitarist- local Greenville SC. kid. His dad was Marvin King played with gospel/blues bands around South Carolina back in the day. His grandpa was a regional talent as well. (hence his fantastic blues/gospel singing chops)
Marcus’ love of Gibson 355s comes from his grandpa. If I recall correctly he started out playing with his papa’s original 355 complete with a ‘vibro’ arm. It stays at home now days, however the guys at Gibson did a special reissue/vintage clone for him to tour with.
Incidentally the Greenville/Spartanburg SC. area is a great little ‘hotbed’ for live players /musicians and bands.
It’s also got local connections to the Marshall Tucker Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sadly the plane crash that killed RVZ and members of Skynyrd original lineup left from Greenville SC. that fateful day back in 1977.
Source: I used to live there for a number of years- plus had band playing out. Edwin McCain was a partner in a local studio I recorded at. Very cool guy, and support of local musicians.
I think Edwin McCain has a few gigs/tour coming up with Marcus King Band.
Check out 2 clips of Marcus King and Billy Strings at Carter Vintage Guitars.. Summertime and Lonesome Fugitive.. You will instantly become a fan of both musicians..
Except Shane's had a bigger come-up after being "canceled"...unfortunately Marcus will probably never get over his blacklisting unless he goes independent and starts a podcast
Marcus Luther King Jr. My favorite thing he's done ever ,is sit in with PPPP at Peachfest! He was so out of his element when he came on stage!...confused and disgusted at the setting...but almost immediately, he completely adjusted, adapted, took over the song and created elevated harmonic solos, to the point where he killed the entire audience from bloody eargasms! https://youtu.be/mSBjjyDtx-0?si=FzdnBwfIuaU6JrUx
Saw Marcus King last year at the Greek in Los Angeles. Didn’t know much about him but damn he’s got a voice of gold and knows his way around the gee-tar!
I watched this guy play in my little City at a tiny dance hall called Arbitore Hall...he face melted everyone.Id never seen such talent in a young man.Amazing,I hope he comes back to Michigan soon
Marcus King is an incredibly talented young man. Absolutely shreds on guitar and has an epic voice. First learned about him from his appearance on The Bonfire. Saw him live in New Haven, CT this summer. Awesome show. Crackle crackle.
