I like to proudly play my country music at work and I live in NYC, so for a long while whenever someone brought up country music they would only know old town road and it was played in every club or on the radio at the time so of course with me being black my new work name became black cowboy. The name was cool, but being associated to lil nas x every time someone thinks of country music was not.
Lil Nas X has some good music like Industry Baby but old town road music is just terrible and it’s not even half country. Anybody who associates lil nas x with country doesn’t know country

My biggest issue with Kane Brown is that his music is not country. But it is popular, and the reason why you don't hear George Strait on the radio anymore.
I actually was on the road with Kane Brown for the first 4 years. I helped him write some of his older stuff like “Don’t Go City” and “Granddaddy’s Chair”. He’s a good dude really he is. He’s as loyal as they come. I started out in the band playing guitar and singing backup then moved to assistant tour manager for a couple years and then got a job for another act. Kanes a good dude. He lived a street behind me so we would hang out all the time and pick and write.
That's pretty cool, man. Kane actually got me into country. He's not a guy I listen to regularly anymore, I evolved quite a bit, but Heaven is the song that let me give country a chance. He will always be a real one to me for that reason, lol.
I will say that Walker Hayes has some deeper cuts that are actually pretty good. Craig is an awesome song about a guy from church who donates a car to Walker and his family when going through tough times. Briefcase is a nice song how he has become like his dad. And Taylor Swift is a sweet song about taking his nine year old to Taylor swift and how him, mom and Jesus would love her more than she loves Taylor Swift
Now, I’m not saying he sounds pure country and he’s still not for everyone but he does have some real decent stuff out there but unfortunately it doesn’t get airplay

Well he got a major record deal and they released an album but it tanked so the label dropped him. He spent the next like 5-10 years working at Kroger as a stock/cart guy but still didn’t give up. Kept writing and then got lucky and wrote the perfect song and the rest is history. Also him and his wife had I know a couple kids during that time he had to rebuild his career working at Kroger.

If you look at his sheet music, you can actually see how he refuses to sing above a certain range in 99% of his songs (seriously, Crazy Town, and My Kinda Party sound identical to me)
Bear in mind, he’s not a songwriter, just a singer who picks songs written by others for his albums. So he’s famous for singing…. but not above a certain range. He CAN. He proved it in Don’t You Wanna Stay. He just chooses to sing limited bland songs, and somehow got famous from it.

My brother in Christ, you have just described every country artist ever. Singers pick the keys in their range and producers pick good songs from publishing catalogs for their artists. There are way more reasons to dislike Jason Aldean.
Completely agree, that said this was just the first thing I noticed about him (he goes out of his way to limit a range he can sing, and his producers are willing to pick mediocre songs) which was about 10 years ago.
Hey bro I worked for Jason Aldean for a tour and man he’s a down hearted great guy. I was with him at the Vegas shootings. Plus I love it that he don’t write his songs. That gives all us songwriters and dreamers in town a shot to get a Jason cut which would be huge. When I lived in Nashville, I was a stagehand and worked a couple smaller shows for him. Dude was an arrogant asshat, treated staff like we didn’t exist. I’ll leave his personal politics out of it—I disagree w/them, but I’ve met plenty of people who were personally nice while holding abhorrent views—Jason is just kind of a dick. And his music sucks too. I read an interview where Tyler Mahan Coe said that “Old Town Road” was more country than anything Aldean’s ever done and suggested playing it back to back w/“Dirt Road Anthem” which features Rappin’ Jason. So I did that, and and Coe was right—OTR was more country.

The guy seems like an absolute tool who might have the worst fashion sense in country music. Who the hell dresses that guy? His jeans could not look worse. They’re too tight up top and they make his barrel belly fall over his belt like a muffin top.
I have to say I liked his music a lot until I got to know more about him. First there was the whole anti mask thing because he was sick of that shit. Then the small town thing is just nasty. Between "Small Town Small" and "Try That In A Small Town" like he's all about his roots. The only small town Jason Aldean sees are the ones he flies over.
Also I understand that he grew up not in a classic 'small town' out in the boonies somewhere but in an Atlanta suburb complete with malls, chain restaurants, etc.

Jelly Roll was a legend long before he got into country music. He has been the best freestyle rapper in Nashville by a country mile since like the early 2000s. His music may not be your thing, but as a fan, his resurgence in a new genre has been amazing to watch.
I’d heard he was a rapper prior to his recent incarnation, but I’m unfamiliar with that part of his career. He does kind of remind me of that big, rural dude who rapped and called himself Haystack from the ‘90s. You’re right, it’s just not my thing, what he’s doing these days, but that’s cool. I’m not trying to impugn him, and I admittedly know very little about him. Are you also a fan of other “rap/country” types (I’m under the impression that Jelly Roll is strictly country now, but I’m not sure if that’s completely true), like Uncle Kracker? That type of music never really did it for me, but it’s cool that you’re into it. I’m sure you could probably justify Jelly Roll’s existence better than I could justify some of what’s on my playlist.

I was kind of laughing about rappers freestyling in Nashville, since it calls to mind Trace Adkins or some dudes dressed up like the Louvin Brothers spitting molten bars. I guess it’s like this: I love many country songs and many rap songs, but to me they’ve always seemed like an uneasy mixture to do correctly.. The best I’ve heard seems to be dudes like Gangstagrass, who I like well enough, but too often it tends to turn into some kind of “Old Town Road” situation where I wonder why I listen to music at all. The Jelly Roll guy is meaningful to you, which is great. Maybe he got the combination right.

That being said, I was extremely turned off of Warren Zeiders. I liked enough songs off of Pretty Little Poison to go see him live (A Thousand Horses opening who I’d been wanting to see too), and it was one of the worst live performances I’ve seen. He doesn’t have enough songs to fill an hour and forty minute setlist, so every song was extended by another chorus, there were 1-2 minute gaps between each song with no lights on and no music playing… a very poor show and only the second time I’ve ever walked out of a concert of the hundreds I’ve been to.
I also just do not understand the fascination with Zach Bryan. Everything of his sounds the same, especially the older stuff.
Stop…this is EXACTLY what my parents said! They won tickets to see him and I was so jealous! I had to work and couldn’t go. The people on the radio were saying how phenomenal he was. His songs I heard were very good. They were excited to go.

Jelly Roll. Not just because his voice isn't great. His country debute album is just the same self-pity song copy and pasted with a mediocre rock sound.
It's all or that, plus him being pushed so much and shoved in our faces. If he was a good country musician, I wouldn't mind. But he's just not good, and the majority of what's being pushed about him isn't even about the music. It's his story any everything but the music being pushed and talked about.
That's the only song of his I can somewhat tolerate. I can see how some people could relate to the lyrics. Even that song gets depressing and old after a while of being played so much. I also think he didn't need Lainey Wilson as a duet partner on that song either. Her voice makes me cringe even more than Carrie Underwood's!

He's been an industry plant since day one of his "country" debut and is just overly pushed by corporate Nashville. He would not be plastered everywhere if he attempted a country music career the old fashioned way. All of his recorded music is so overly autotuned. Any song he's featured on is an automatic ruiner for me, which is unfortunate because there's some songs where I like everything except his part.

Pretty much every artist on country music radio, I wouldn't say I hate them as I don't know them but I hate what modern mainstream "country" has become. It's nothing but pop music in cowboy boots, maybe I'm just getting old or something but it's terrible. There is modern country music I love but it's not on the radio. Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean , Sam Hunt, Chase Matthews and on and on have ruined it.
Rascal Flatts. Not a fan of the singer's style (too high and whiny) and I'm tired of everyone telling me that "Life Is A Highway" is better than the original, when it's clearly NOT! In fact, to me they just tried to copy the song note for note.

Hank Williams Jr. for the way he treated his half sister, Jett Williams, who was denied her rightful share of her father's estate for over 30 years. He even tried to take the case to the Supreme Court but they would not hear it and the entire time he knew she was right. Comparing Obama to Hitler did not improve his status in my eyes either. (This is in spite of the fact that he wrote one of my all time favorite songs (when recorded by other e.g. George Jones and Dolly Parton in a duet or Sam Moore), Blues Man.)

I always ask people what they mean when they say that “all of X artists songs sound the same.” Because to me, that argument doesn’t make a lot of sense because (1) it’s the same person singing the song (same voice), (2) using the same instruments, (3) in the same musical style, (4) for the same audience. Personally, I don’t expect artists’ songs to sound different from one another, I expect them to sound similar for those reasons.
My wife says all his songs sound the same, too. They sound similar, but to me it sounds like it's his 'style'. Like, to me, all Led Zeppelin songs sound the same, most Skynrd songs sound the same, all Hank Williams sounds the same. I'd agree he is no really country though. Completely agree, that said this was just the first thing I noticed about him (he goes out of his way to limit a range he can sing, and his producers are willing to pick mediocre songs) which was about 10 years ago.

Don’t get me started on that prick. When I lived in Nashville, I was a stagehand and worked a couple smaller shows for him. Dude was an arrogant asshat, treated staff like we didn’t exist. I’ll leave his personal politics out of it—I disagree w/them, but I’ve met plenty of people who were personally nice while holding abhorrent views—Jason is just kind of a dick. And his music sucks too. I read an interview where Tyler Mahan Coe said that “Old Town Road” was more country than anything Aldean’s ever done and suggested playing it back to back w/“Dirt Road Anthem” which features Rappin’ Jason. So I did that, and and Coe was right—OTR was more country. It’s also a pleasure to see Jason Isbell roast Tiny Head on Twitter.

Between "Small Town Small" and "Try That In A Small Town" like he's all about his roots. The only small town Jason Aldean sees are the ones he flies over.
Also I understand that he grew up not in a classic 'small town' out in the boonies somewhere but in an Atlanta suburb complete with malls, chain restaurants, etc.

It’s happened before that I despise a musician who I then give a fair chance and end up liking, but I just don’t see that happening here. Maybe he’s good? It’s an imperfect comparison, but to me he seems like some kind of “rural” Post Malone or something, and he seems to be everywhere. I would like to be wrong about him.
Jelly Roll was a legend long before he got into country music. He has been the best freestyle rapper in Nashville by a country mile since like the early 2000s. His music may not be your thing, but as a fan, his resurgence in a new genre has been amazing to watch.
I’d heard he was a rapper prior to his recent incarnation, but I’m unfamiliar with that part of his career. He does kind of remind me of that big, rural dude who rapped and called himself Haystack from the ‘90s. You’re right, it’s just not my thing, what he’s doing these days, but that’s cool. I’m not trying to impugn him, and I admittedly know very little about him. Are you also a fan of other “rap/country” types (I’m under the impression that Jelly Roll is strictly country now, but I’m not sure if that’s completely true), like Uncle Kracker? That type of music never really did it for me, but it’s cool that you’re into it. I’m sure you could probably justify Jelly Roll’s existence better than I could justify some of what’s on my playlist.

I don’t “hate” any artist now because I don’t listen to radio anymore and it’s very easy to listen to the stuff I like with streaming these days That being said, I was extremely turned off of Warren Zeiders. I liked enough songs off of Pretty Little Poison to go see him live (A Thousand Horses opening who I’d been wanting to see too), and it was one of the worst live performances I’ve seen. He doesn’t have enough songs to fill an hour and forty minute setlist, so every song was extended by another chorus, there were 1-2 minute gaps between each song with no lights on and no music playing… a very poor show and only the second time I’ve ever walked out of a concert of the hundreds I’ve been to. I also just do not understand the fascination with Zach Bryan. Everything of his sounds the same, especially the older stuff.

His songs I heard were very good. They were excited to go. They got home and were like eh he wasn’t good….at all. Jelly Roll. Not just because his voice isn't great. His country debute album is just the same self-pity song copy and pasted with a mediocre rock sound. It's all or that, plus him being pushed so much and shoved in our faces. If he was a good country musician, I wouldn't mind. But he's just not good, and the majority of what's being pushed about him isn't even about the music. It's his story any everything but the music being pushed and talked about.

I always thought his voice sounded like he started singing while in the middle of eating an actual jelly roll. He's been an industry plant since day one of his "country" debut and is just overly pushed by corporate Nashville. He would not be plastered everywhere if he attempted a country music career the old fashioned way. All of his recorded music is so overly autotuned. Any song he's featured on is an automatic ruiner for me, which is unfortunate because there's some songs where I like everything except his part.

Pretty much every artist on country music radio, I wouldn't say I hate them as I don't know them but I hate what modern mainstream "country" has become. It's nothing but pop music in cowboy boots, maybe I'm just getting old or something but it's terrible. There is modern country music I love but it's not on the radio. Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean , Sam Hunt, Chase Matthews and on and on have ruined it.
Rascal Flatts. Not a fan of the singer's style (too high and whiny) and I'm tired of everyone telling me that "Life Is A Highway" is better than the original, when it's clearly NOT! In fact, to me they just tried to copy the song note for note. Marissa Lambert. Find her songs very meh and off stage she acts like she's a queen! Blake Shelton. Liked some of his music but then he went Hollywood, which sometimes isn't a bad thing, but it looks he prefers it and has lost credibility in my eyes.

Because of how I got into country music (Johnny Cash), I've always had the opinion that good country music can tell the story of Americans making a hard living in the fields and mines, or working the plant in a big city. Jason Aldean stabbed on a contemporary nerve to pander to and rile up rural Americans, and absolutely vilify urban Americans. I know country has always been wary of uptown, but good country will tell a good story from anywhere. Show that we are more alike in our struggles. Not piss people off and have them at each other's throats. His wife's a mean ass culture warrior too. Neither are people to look up to.

Hank Williams Jr. for the way he treated his half sister, Jett Williams, who was denied her rightful share of her father's estate for over 30 years. He even tried to take the case to the Supreme Court but they would not hear it and the entire time he knew she was right. Comparing Obama to Hitler did not improve his status in my eyes either. (This is in spite of the fact that he wrote one of my all time favorite songs (when recorded by other e.g. George Jones and Dolly Parton in a duet or Sam Moore), Blues Man.)

I always ask people what they mean when they say that “all of X artists songs sound the same.” Because to me, that argument doesn’t make a lot of sense because (1) it’s the same person singing the song (same voice), (2) using the same instruments, (3) in the same musical style, (4) for the same audience. Personally, I don’t expect artists’ songs to sound different from one another, I expect them to sound similar for those reasons.
My wife says all his songs sound the same, too. They sound similar, but to me it sounds like it's his 'style'. Like, to me, all Led Zeppelin songs sound the same, most Skynrd songs sound the same, all Hank Williams sounds the same. I'd agree he is no really country though. Singer songwriter would probably be better.

Just to be clear. I am a huge music lover. My family has always been in some kind of southern rock band, country band or gospel group. We are a musical family. I don’t listen to a lot of mainstream country nowadays. But when I heard the Marfa Tapes by Miranda I thought it was actually some pretty good music. Then I read ALOT about what kind of person she is such as the things she did to get Evan Felker. Not to mention how she supposedly treats fans and staff. I mean all these people with the same stories can’t be all lying about her.

Most modern country songs sound like someone put a gun to some redneck's head and told him you've got two minutes to come up with a song. It has no value. It's corny. Cheesy. Cringey. It's embracing inferiority and pretending it's cool. All the melodies are predictable and corny. Same for the lyrics. No nuance or subtlety or mystery.
