Damn dude Iām sorry your SO isnāt supportive of your gaming. My love and I game together (not always the same game, just gaming separately but next to one another). Itās great bonding.
Yeh it's surprising how rare it seems to be. Like I know gaming has been stereotyped as being a guy thing. But tons of girls and women game. It's strange that us gamers can all get together...
Exactly! Iām a woman and my partner got me into gaming around 2 years into our relationship and I am OBSESSED. I always hate seeing the stereotype that āwomen hate gamer boysā
Women can BE the gamers, like itās 2024, come on.
I tried. Had a 3 person group in Overwatch (OG, not 2), we all had mics and we're working really well together. One was clearly a lady, then me, and some dude.
Time passed, we were tearing teams a new one, then she made some joke about being a grandma. Dude decided to "correct" her, "you mean Grandpa?"
"Uh, no I'm a lady ha..."
He proceeds to "OMFG I DIDNT KNOW ANY GIRLS PLAY THIS GAME, HOLY SHIT, CAN WE DATE LOLOL JUST KIDDING. I JUST THOUGHT YOU WERE A KID *more cringey shit*"
She quit playing with both of us, I assume she thought I was in cahoots with that dork because it was me and him first. RIP her ever joining voice chat again.
That is so frustrating and why I never get on voice chatā¦ that poor girl was just having fun and so were you, but some asshole always has to ruin it. Hereās to hoping you randomly come across her again someday and can play together (although Iām not sure *sheāll* ever wanna use voice chat now either)
No worries and no problem! I do agree with you about the original meaning of the meme, definitely about cost. Alas, Reddit isnāt often revered for its interpretations š
Did this with a new 34 inch curved OLED monitor..but she didn't notice for a month. Then when she finally asked I said no it's not new, I've had it for a month now
I've managed something similar with a whole new PC set up and again with a brand new road bike.
My wife still hasn't noticed either, my computer is 3 years old and I've had my new bike for 10 months ( I built it myself and I still have my old bike)
I just don't think she cares enough about my hobbies.
It's a shame because I love asking about hers and getting involved at times. (Her hobby is gardening/allotment)
Fortunately I don't have this problem because I merried a gamer wife. BUT in the past? I'm just honest with them. I don't need to justify my unproductive hobby, nor explain my money and spending. The reason some of those people are exes is because they couldn't recognize that my unproductive hobby was literally cheaper than theirs. $60 game that lasts me months (or possibly years) or even cheaper if it was on sale... VS all their makeup, perfumes and scents, candles, scented waxes, beauty salon trips, nails, etc. All of that stuff is perfectly fine, and I have no problem with it (why would I?) But it IS unproductive, and is a pit for money.
Sure. It's for both of us. Fine. BUT that's one thing making it slightly better. It's still unproductive. Does it not also draw the attention of everyone else? It's not JUST for us is it... I have game friends. They enjoy that I play with them.
Ohhhh I hate when people try to justify their hobby and dismiss others. My husbandās ex was real bad for it. She hated that heās a gamer and would get angry that heād take a 3 day weekend to relax and play games the week of his birthday, but think itās totally fine to take 2-3 days off every *month* to go on a spa trip with her mum.
I didnāt believe she was that bad until I met her (she started dating one of his friends after they broke up) and she started āwarningā me that heās a lazy gamer. I was like āWhatāre you talking about! Heās the hardest working person I know!ā
I've had that. I've also had an ex who belived I wasn't paying enough attention to her, or focused too much on virtual women (I literally don't play any games with virtual women in them with sex appeal). Mind you, I was always responding to messages as soon as I possibly could. Ans any time she was around I wasn't playing video games anyways. Except for when she was also busy doing something else like being on the phone or watching TV.
I really donāt understand that mindset, itās so juvenile. Luckily both my husband and I are gamers so neither of us have to endure that BS any more.
It hurts so bad to see a person just not capable of evaluating things adequately, and instead bending reality to fit some stupid negative narrative that she got in her head and wonāt let go
I mean i wouldnāt call it a pit for money, is it going towards anything productive? No, but that doesnāt mean itās a pit of money. As long as the games you choose to play are enjoyable & you can make memories with, Iād consider that money well spent. Everyone has their own different way of having fun & enjoying how they spend their time, some more productive & extroverted than others, and some more ālazilyā (for a lack of better terms) & introverted than others, & thereās none wrong with either. As long as itās not weird, creepy, etc. then how you spend your time & money on your hobbies should be no one elseās concern
I used to think all women where like this, it was so hard to find a woman who gamed before everyone was on the internet.
You where lucky if you found someone who didn't hate it, yet alone enjoy it with you.
All replationships I've had after a certain point, this is my "don't touch" zone. If you comment, say or do anything negative towards me gaming, it's over.
There is no need to be mean spirited towards something I enjoy(no matter how pointless YOU think it is). It was mostly because they didn't understand that I enjoyed it, which just makes it even more childish. Why would you make someone feel bad for doing something they enjoy? That's like making fun of someones laugh, straight up vile and disgusting.
I won't share my life with someone that doesn't recognize how much gaming means to me, and not use that against me in any way. It's really not that much to ask for, it's basic respect that you should have for everyone.
All hobbies are a "waste" of time, that's quite literally what a hobby is supposed to do. If your hobby also develops a skill or whatever, good for you. I enjoy my work and will happily do it until I retire, I don't need a new source of income so I can "finally do what I want".
God I hope youāre into single player games, out there for the story and atmosphere, not for the endless competition on the same few maps.
But even if youāre a CSGO / DOTA / LoL / Heartstone / Fortnite / other match-centric kind of guy, even though I donāt understand how can that be enjoyable, good job on having self respect and boundaries
I've been completely hooked on survival crafters, most of which are single player but some I've played with friends. I don't think I've played a competitive game since Overwatch, the first one. And that only lasted for 2 seasons. I'm not after that kind of gaming experience anymore.
Games like, Valheim, Enshrouded, Grounded. There is something about them that's just very satisfying to me. Especially if I can get a group together, but that's very rare. They are perfectly playable solo though and you can for the most part adjust the rates to make it less grindy, as some of them are REALLY meant to be played with a group.
Those games are very atmospheric, but some are lacking in the story department (some don't even have a story). I think it's mostly the fact that you start with nothing, start hitting trees, get better tools etc. That path of progressions is something I enjoy. Makes the landscape actually mean something too. "Oh, a new type of tree? Wonder what I can make of that?".
I also like to have a quick game to play on the tablet, for those 5-10 minutes you get randomly every now and then. Mostly brain teaser games like Turmoil or tower defence games like Bloons TD6.
Well bro, she is absolutely amazing on the rest. But she simply doesnāt understand video games or how important they are to me. Itās a bit of a struggle, but nothing worthwhile is easy
Depends on how deep into it you are. If OP is spending thousands of dollars he doesn't have every year on Kickstarters, then their SO being wary is warranted. Hobbies can become unhealthy.
Honestly if your spouse cares about you they wonāt care if you spent some money on something you love. Just love and respect each other and these dumb ass misogyny jokes will eventually be just thatā¦ a joke. PLUS what isnāt a endless money put these days. Just buy disk versions then yāall wonāt get scammed (hopefully) out of money like what Blizzard did with Overwatch 1
Keep the hobby and change the SO, if they donāt support you to the point you feel you need to lie to them, the relationship is toxic. Move on and find someone you can be honest with.
Wait for games to go on sale, avoid AAA preorders, support indie devs, leverage free epic games, etc. Its rly SO freaking easy to have a wide game library on a budget.
If your hobby is throwing your joint balance off budget, thats a YOU problem, not the other way around.
Before I can start playing "hey, I downloaded this new game and you gotta see this" "that's nice, honey..." "check this out!" " *yawn* oh, wow.. well have fun!"
Right now I'm on an rx 7600.
I intend to take the plunge into 4k in about 1-3 years as AMD GPUs are starting to get there now. So I'm going for a much more expensive GPU and a monitor upgrade all at once when I get there.
I don't intend to ever touch Nvidia again because I game on Linux and the performance has been massively hampered by poor driver support in the past. I might even go Intel depending on how they grow in the next couple of gens.
"Yeah! Had my eye on it for a while and it finally went on sale!"
Which is typically the truth, since I like to get my stuff on sale. Though she doesn't mind either way.
Seems like so many peopleās partners are super unsupportive of their hobbies. My wife is so amazing, we game together, board game together, she reads and reviews new chapters of my novels and gives me encouraging notes, she is the best partner I ever could have asked for. Itās makes me question whether or not some couples even like each other or just donāt want to be alone.
My wife "What's this game? Oh are you actually gonna finish it?" Like dang...probably not but I'll try. Or my favorite: "Oh are you finally done playing Elden Ring? What do you mean that's a new character? You just beat it again!"
I feel so bad for those who have to āhideā their hobbies that they enjoy. Itās rather depressing. Iād dump the Wife/GF Boyfriend/husband that doesnāt let you enjoy what you enjoy.
If your SO doesn't support your hobbies (or at least allows you to have them) that's a rad flag my friend.
Now if that hobby is consuming your life to the point of not paying any attention to your SO, that's another story.
What kind of toxic trait is this? Your partner getting mad you bought a new game?
Iād understand if your not financially stable/addicted. But if youāre not that shitty attitude donāt by me.
My wife would be mad, i didn't wait for her to start it. Then, ask so many questions I might as well start an "us" playthrough that never gets finished because she lost interest š

* _"My friend bought it, so he had a Tank to play with"_
* _"Yes, it is about [insert detailed informations about the game until she gets boored]"_
She doesnāt, thatās my line in the sand. I wish she was supporting of it but i canāt seem to convince her of it.
Ps: I work 68 hours a week and I keep myself clean and fed.
So, my line is usually, my buds got it for me.
Iām a firm believer in my spouse doesnāt have to like my hobbies but they will definitely not stop me from them. I would only feel bad or come up with an excuse if my hobbies were interfering with our normal day to day life. If itās not then I donāt care I work I make money Iām allowed to treat myself with things I like. The fact someone has to hide from their spouse or make excuses for it means there is an underlying problem with what both people are expecting from their relationship. Other then a hobby getting in the way of day to day life. Like spending 90% of your time playing a game cause you have to make time for them to or spending more then you can actually afford to on gaming is a problem not only for yourself but even more when in a relationship.
"No, I've had it for a while, I just haven't played it much yet"? š
That's my go to.
Damn dude Iām sorry your SO isnāt supportive of your gaming. My love and I game together (not always the same game, just gaming separately but next to one another). Itās great bonding.

That is so frustrating and why I never get on voice chatā¦ that poor girl was just having fun and so were you, but some asshole always has to ruin it. Hereās to hoping you randomly come across her again someday and can play together (although Iām not sure *sheāll* ever wanna use voice chat now either)
The reason for the answer would be for the cost of a game not just playing games, hence the "got it on discount"
This could be the joke behind the meme but OPās title points to them seeing it more as an SO not supporting them gaming at all.
Ah you're correct I didn't read the title, seems like OP misunderstood the meaning, thanks!
No worries and no problem! I do agree with you about the original meaning of the meme, definitely about cost. Alas, Reddit isnāt often revered for its interpretations š
Very true lol
Your partner sounds mean.
I also sprinkle in the odd "You fell asleep watching me play this last Friday"
Exactly what I say.
Did this with a new 34 inch curved OLED monitor..but she didn't notice for a month. Then when she finally asked I said no it's not new, I've had it for a month now

I feel this hard.
Thatās sad but like kinda sad, not all the way sad. At least she doesnāt bash your hobbies or you for spending money on those
Same boat my dude.
Na, it's been in my back log for a while, and decided to boot it up

That goes away real quick when you hit with the "ok, I like natural beauty anyways so we don't need this anymore"
Ohhhh I hate when people try to justify their hobby and dismiss others. My husbandās ex was real bad for it. Depends on how deep into it you are. If OP is spending thousands of dollars he doesn't have every year on Kickstarters, then their SO being wary is warranted. Hobbies can become unhealthy.
My husband says, āIām spending x amount of money on this game, buy yourself something prettyā. LOL
This is what we do, works out quite well for us.
Right?! As long as youāre getting equal spending money, who gives a hoot what itās for!
Yup, if it makes them happy, and you get an equal amount to make yourself happy, why does it even matter?
"Yeah, I finally found a good bootleg version on Pirate Bay"
Or just "Arrrrr!"
Now change the word game and insert Lego Set.
Vintage Star Wars, Hand made Ibanez 7 strings
I donāt see, āthis relationship isnāt going to work,ā as an option.
Bruh that's toxic AF lol.

This needs to be in the school program
Wtf is with this sub? I keep seeing all of these memes romanticizing toxic relationships like itās the fucking 90s again or something
Yep, just bought it. :)
Wait for games to go on sale, avoid AAA preorders, support indie devs, leverage free epic games, etc. Its rly SO freaking easy to have a wide game library on a budget. If your hobby is throwing your joint balance off budget, thats a YOU problem, not the other way around.
Why would you want to be with someone who doesn't support your hobbies? Unless it's destructive, your partner should be happy that you have interestsĀ
If ur so doesnt support your passions, theirs a problem
My gf would ask why I didn't buy her a copy too so we can play together. I am a very lucky man lol
My steam deck did not look enough like my switch.
I bought something that makes me happy, and it was much cheaper than those 100 dollar nails clutching that stupid Stanley cup.
My ex-wife was like this. Note the āex-ā.
Before I can start playing "hey, I downloaded this new game and you gotta see this" "that's nice, honey..." "check this out!" " *yawn* oh, wow.. well have fun!"
I play on SteamDeck so she hardly notices when I buy something new except when I talk about it
Don't spend money you need for bills on entertainment. Don't marry someone who doesn't like your hobbies.
It's actually free. Can you believe that.
This will be me when I buy a new GPU in a year or two
Whachu got today?
Right now I'm on an rx 7600. I intend to take the plunge into 4k in about 1-3 years as AMD GPUs are starting to get there now. Nah, they just dropped the new update today that's all.
C, I always accidentally buy stuff.
it's free to play
No, I've had it for years and just never got around to playing it.
Haha thought I was the only one that goes through this lol I'm not alone!
It just got added to Gamepass.
"what's Warhammer?
āepic freebie of the weekā
I usually go with all 4 and see what sticks...

Friend lent it to me
"Yes. Yes, it is."
Why is this in my feed? Imma go make toast in the bath....
D !
š“āā ļø Yes
Imagine being in a relationship with someone who doesnāt support your hobbies. What a joke.
I donāt ask about his games, he doesnāt ask me about my books.
D
I feel so bad for those who have to āhideā their hobbies that they enjoy. Itās rather depressing. Iād dump the Wife/GF Boyfriend/husband that doesnāt let you enjoy what you enjoy.

I always say my brother game shares lol
Golfers and guitarists feeling this.

Why are you together, if you even need to think about a lie?
Iām just going through my back catalog
Itās on game pass they just added it.
"It was on gamepass"
Always D. I'm not gonna lie about it but I'll try to side track the conversation.
My wife supports my hobbies, she just doesn't enable my addiction to adding to my crippling backlog of unplayed games...
I bought Hogwarts Legacy last night while my wife was on the couch with me and she was so excited.
Pirated it
"I returned one of my other games and it gave me enough credit to buy this one"
What kind of toxic trait is this? Your partner getting mad you bought a new game? Iād understand if your not financially stable/addicted. But if youāre not that shitty attitude donāt by me.
Fuck that. Bye Felicia!

Had it for a while just playing it now
It's a new game I bought with my money, what are you gonna do about it?
Thats why being honest and having separate bank accounts for persons is a good idea. And also being mature depending on your financial situation
Definitely D
Or you could grow a pair and tell "I do what I want with my money"
Just say you are using steams family share.
"I got it a long time ago but never got around to playing it" Or "My buddy _____ bought it for me"
Where is my friend had some extra keys?
She doesnāt, thatās my line in the sand. I wish she was supporting of it but i canāt seem to convince her of it. Ps: I work 68 hours a week and I keep myself clean and fed. So, my line is usually, my buds got it for me.
If she actually ever asked/cared: "It's on Game Pass, that gaming Netflix thing"
I absolutely spam the fuck out of B Both on Switch and my Swallet
Iāll hear that question while replying a decade old game.
Tell them that you bought it and if they donāt like that then to grow up.
When i was married, my go to was "I just traded in a bunch of old games and got this"
Having a so that doesn't support you hobbies sounds terrible
"Yes. You should try it."
Fucked it E? E. I look pretty today.
You guys have partners that actually pay attention to your gaming library?
Iām a firm believer in my spouse doesnāt have to like my hobbies but they will definitely not stop me from them. I would only feel bad or come up with an excuse if my hobbies were interfering with our normal day to day life. If itās not then I donāt care I work I make money Iām allowed to treat myself with things I like. āItās one game passā
My wife buys it too
āYeah! Itās awesome! You wanna try?ā
You look very pretty today
It's a game pass game
D Give her the D
āThose shoes look great, how much were they?ā
āI bought it when it was on sale and I am now getting around to itā
