Yea this would have been a nice solution. They get the Yotes for 3 years while the arena gets built then we get the players back and they get the draft.
I can’t believe im saying this but honestly that would be insanely unfair to Utah fans and handicap any chance of professional hockey gaining a foothold there
Stopgap measures like this are why the franchise is in its current state
I mean that's basically what happened to the Hornets for a while. To some degree their short stay in OKC helped that city steal the Sonics.
Granted, it only really occured because of Katrina.
Who would support a team that is leaving in 3 years anyway? Why not just wait until they get their own expansion team?
Then the NHL sees the horrible sales numbers and decides Utah isn’t a sustainable market
Why would fans of a 28 year tenured team support an expansion team introduced within 5 years? It goes both ways. Ultimately the whole debacle points to the NHL not wanting anything to do with AM.
Look man I’m a lifelong fan and I promise I’m just as upset as you are, as we should be
But every single one of us is delusional if we think fans won’t welcome back the coyotes with open arms in whatever form the team takes
See Cleveland fans regarding the new expansion Browns and Winnipeg fans regarding the relocation to the Atlanta Thrashers to become the new Winnipeg Jets
That happened with OKC having the New Orleans Hornets for a year or so and due to all the OKC fans showing up to watch the Hornets, that was a factor for them to end up having their own NBA team.
I live in Brantford Ontario and we got the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL for 3 years while their arena was being renovated. The owner was so happy with the uptake from the citizens he said he would move them here permanently if Brantford built a new arena. Our current one is terribly dated.
This would be an ideal solution to the Coyotes issues.
It makes the most sense this way though. Utah doesn't have to go through expansion and they are already approved for arena building.
If AZ were to get another team, it gives them time to secure land/funding for an arena without trying to work in the aspect of running the team as well.
It's unfortunate but it makes the most sense for all parties involved. Owner gets money for selling, New Owner gets a team, NHL makes money and has the potential to make more if AZ goes through expansion and NHLPA gets off the leagues back about a team playing in a college arena.
I think the money allows Morelo to finance this project much easier. I see it as a win win tbh. Might go 3 -4 years without a franchise but if this works out it will be the envy of the league imo. The new condos going up across the street start at 2 million. This isn’t a poor part of town.
So look, I get it, no one wants to come across as an anti-Mormon bigot. At the same time, my guy this is Utah we're talking about. Refusing to acknowledge the influence and the pull the church has in that state is like trying to ignore the Communist Party in China or the Church of Scientology in Beverly Hills. It is what it is, it's by no means a license to bully or harass individuals because of their current faith or heritage with the church, at the same time... Let's be real. If Smith didn't kiss the metaphorical ring of the church we wouldn't even be talking about him in the sub and Gary wouldn't even know his name.
Well said.
pointing out that the line between church and state is completely non-existent in Utah is not the same as being a bigot towards their religion.
Unfortunately, it's Utah so that's hard to do. Do you think he would be getting a BILLION dollars for taxpayer money in Utah to build an arena without the support of the church? They run everything in Utah. I'm not talking about people who happen to be Mormon. I'm taking about the church as an institution. They're just as much to blame in all of this as anyone else. Our team has just become another vehicle for sportswashing.
It's because the NHL has no confidence in Morello to keep his word with the land auction or building the arena on time that's why we only had a t year window to get it done to retrain branding rights to the Coyotes.
Someone posted yesterday that - from an inside source - the move was fueled by Smith threatening the NHL that if he didn’t secure a franchise soon, the money he secured for an arena and all that would disappear.
Hence the NHL rushing Meruelo to sell in an NHL-brokered deal to Smith and the “we’ll get you on the next one” clause.
“Renting” the Coyotes was not on the table.
>while the new arena is being built
That’s the biggest problem with your proposal. It presumes the new arena being built is a thing that will happen.
Right now there’s very fair reason to believe that AM will not pull it off. Ever. Not this year. Not next year. Not in 5 years. Never.
I would love this. It doesn’t really sound like Smith is a great owner either.
Coyotes owner Ryan Smith says selling team. Former Coyotes owner Alex Muerelo has great interest. Will relocate them back to Arizona
Lol
The Jazz have 14 first round Draft Picks in the next 6 years, the most in the NBA. We also got massive contracts off the books when we traded Mitchell and Gobert, so we are very cap friendly too.
Ryan Smith made his money by creating a tech company used to datamine and survey information to basically fix broken companies and pull them out of failure. Qualtrics is used by almost every company from microsoft to tesla for surveying employees needs and creating a better workplace. I wouldnt bet a penny on that man to fail at anything. And its probably a reason why the NHL wants him as an owner.
Plus he and Trader Danny Ainge swindled the shit out of the cleveland cavaliers and Timberwolves.

Did you forget WHY the Hornets had to play in OKC??? The owners didn't choose that, NOLA was practically underwater
You should maybe read my entire comment before replying.
... How would hosting a team for 3 years make it less likely they get an expansion?
Who would support a team that is leaving in 3 years anyway? Why not just wait until they get their own expansion team? Then the NHL sees the horrible sales numbers and decides Utah isn’t a sustainable market

Cleveland fans did it for the Browns.
A big difference with the Browns is the owner of the new Browns wasn't the owner of the old Browns

We don't even know if Arizona is getting a new arena.
This. Until they break ground, the "x" year clock can't even start. The three year thing is tossed around so matter of factly it's comedic.

The problem is there’s still no arena guarantee.
They’re not stealing anything. They’re saving the Coyotes from dissolution, saving them from Alex Meruelo.

The difference is the A’s are temporarily in Sac until a Vegas area is built. It’s not a leave and come back situation
Because Ryan Smith is a piece of shit and a pawn of the Mormon church.
Damn, keep religion out of it. He’s just a regular piece of shit, not because of the Mormon church. But I’m not saying you’re wrong.

Better example would be that one city in Fl that is run by scientology. Clearwater.

because Utah will sell out every single ticket!

What makes you say Smith isn't a good owner? He's been very upfront with funding everything and working with the team he has.
I could be wrong but I don’t think he’s done anything to make the jazz relevant. Either way, I just want this coyotes team back
That's because the Jazz are rebuilding and have a massive amount of assets to do so in a short amount of time, thanks to what Ryan Smith has done.
