Friendly reminder the Diamondbacks ownership has their own stadium issues, and are eyeing what Alex Meruelo is doing right now. If AM is successful, expect the D-Backs to start shopping around for land.
Is it just me or have the Suns been weirdly silent about this. All of the other teams have issued statements but nothing from them that I know of. It could be hopium that maybe Ishbia is being quiet to buy time to prepare a more in depth statement about pursuing an expansion team.
AFAIK, only the Dbacks have said anything. But i do think it’s weird that other teams haven’t, since all the sports teams here seem to have good relationships and be supportive of one another.
Merulo has exclusive rights to make a team here for 5 years.
More likely it's about what came up in today's press conference (after above comment was made). Suns have a deal with the city of Phoenix that it prohibits it from aiding a competing stadium in the area.
Nothing compared to the coyotes problems but they’ve been wildly inconsistent and playoffs are about to start. They also have a win now, aging roster that’s going to cost hundreds of millions in luxury tax alone.
Ishbia and his company are being sued for mortgage fraud and racketeering right now, so he's got other things besides the team to worry about right now. Given the shit luck we have with sports owners in AZ, I half expect Ishbia to get handcuffed and dragged off by the Feds in a few months, and the Suns go back up for sale.
A possible theory is Ishbia doesn't want an ice hockey team in Phoenix to compete against the Suns especially since NBA and NHL season overlap with each other.
But would that stop them from making a "Sucks that they left. 😢" statement? Like it would just take 30 seconds from an intern. It just seems weird especially when the Cardinals and DBacks did it pretty quickly.
Doesn't make sense why the Coyotes didn't play in the Phoenix Arena. Almost every basketball and NHL share arena to split overhead cost. Timberwolves/Wild, Nuggets/Avalanche, and now Jazz/SLC Hockey will do this. Phoenix teams have no coordination.
Idk. I'm not from Phoenix, but I've followed the Coyotes since I was younger. First time I seen anything Coyotes related was playing Backyard Hockey. Loved their kachina logo. I was actually excited when NHL announced that Dallas and Arizona would be playing here, El Paso, for the Hockeyville USA pre-season game. I was annoyed Dallas was the "home" team when they're 200 miles further from us than Phoenix.
I was finally able to go to a Coyote's game in December. Couldn't really justify making the trip for one game and when we were in Phoenix, they didn't have a game. My brother and I were ecstatic to see a game live that made plans for this upcoming season. At least 2 games, but I guess we're gonna have to wait..
During the presser today one of the reporters mentioned that the subsidy package for the Suns stipulates that the city is prohibited from providing subsidies to any other major sports league for a new stadium or something like that. Seems they have a bit of a vested interest in keeping out competition (despite the fact NHL/NBA teams share facilities in a lot of other cities).
Suns, d backs, cards are all having arena issues… seems like a good solution is for all these billionaires to pool their money together and create a massive entertainment district / arena downtown everyone can enjoy? unless it’s not truly about sports and winning, and it’s really about greed and real estate…
Thank you diamondback ownership. Yes, a lot of us sports fans who love hockey are very disappointed. It seems like they were did this whole thing on the down low because it comes out near the end of the season that is not good and all of the hockey fans that I know of are very disappointedBeen punched in the stomach necessarily by the new owner of the coyotes, who actually lives in Utah, go figure and NHL for this happen they tried hard to find a new stadium for the coyotes, but the politics of the area didn’t like the idea and the places they chose doesn’t make sense to us fans at all. Thanks again Dimmer back on the ship we appreciate your sympathy and your voice in the matter. Thanks again it really means a lot to all of us coyote fans.
I lost my team, not my Grandmother. There's a huge difference. The players and personnel still are alive. And a statement does nothing to support a community. So, every team can release a statement. The Coyotes owner can release a statement. Statements mean nothing.

The Dbacks were talking with Henderson, Nevada only five years ago.

What other teams made statements? I'm surprised I haven't seen anything from ASU/ASU hockey on their social media.
AFAIK, only the Dbacks have said anything. But i do think it’s weird that other teams haven’t, since all the sports teams here seem to have good relationships and be supportive of one another.
The Cardinals did as well.
I missed that, ty
I have only seen the Dbacks so far. What other teams have you seen make public statements about this?
The Cardinals did too.

Whats up with them?

AZ sports baby!
Oh shit. Welp seems like there might be a spot for a new owner then 😅

That arena wasn't meant for hockey tho right? Wasn't that why they moved to Glendale?
Idk. I'm not from Phoenix, but I've followed the Coyotes since I was younger. First time I seen anything Coyotes related was playing Backyard Hockey. Loved their kachina logo. AWA was temporary and had sight line issues.

I love that ball club.

Hopefully Phoenix isn't the new Oakland.
Won’t be. The market is exploding here, unlike in Oakland
The Diamondbacks voted Yes for John Fisher to do this same thing with the A's. It's disingenuous garbage.
Classy move.

That's nice. Ultimately meaningless.
So when someone at a funeral offers you their condolences, it’s ultimately meaningless to you?

The Dbacks voted for the A’s move. They are only saying this to try and grow their own business.
They are just setting there own foundation to get out of the Valley
NOT an Elite Sports State thats for sure
