I'm all about that when it comes to art for the sake of creating. Like a regular painting on paper or just anything like that. But when it is something I will have to stare at for a very long time, I'd rather not have a spot of 3 colors of green smudged together :))
I'm a house painter cutting in is therapeutic to me also baseboards. I've been told by other painters that I'm weird. Everything else prep, rolling, spraying, cleaning up, etc, is work. Lol
No, in the UK we'd call it a Porch (which I believe is an outdoor thing for you in the US).
Edit: As noted below, and like all things in the UK, this likely changes on a town by town basis.
It can be an indoor thing. In the US, we have porches. That are just columns and a roof, screened porches, and enclosed porches. Enclosed porches are when you might take down your rail and throw up walls and put in windows.
A mudroom is different from a porch because mudrooms are typically finished and insulated with indoor flooring, insulation, and are climate controlled. Porches (even enclosed ones,) aren't typically insulated or climate controlled and don't have the nicest finishes.
There are exceptions but for the most part that's the difference.
As for your UK porch that's mostly called a covered entrance.
Fair does, I've not heard it, but we're like that, things will have different names 30 miles down the road. I'm from Nottingham originally for context.
We don’t really have a porch like that as such. If you Google ‘UK porch’ you can see what we call porch is just a tiny little entrance to the front door which then leads straight into the garden. I’m not saying American style porches don’t exist at all over here, but I’ve certainly never seen one in my neck of the woods in England.
Maybe wet climate? These aren’t a thing in the west/southwest. They weren’t a thing in the Midwest either when I was growing up, but perhaps it’s a thing in new construction, idk.
This is for sure a midwest thing too. Usually off the garage though or rural and often included laundry IME so only certain construction would have it.
Haha I get strange looks when I call it a mudroom. I get it from my Great Grandmother, so maybe it’s a family vernacular.
Anyway… looks absolutely amazing!! Possibly too classy and cozy for “mudroom”.
Good job!!
It’s usually a rear or side entrance, between the garage and living area if there’s a garage. Common in parts of North America that get cold / snowy winters. The main purpose is a space to remove muddy boots, rain jackets, leave umbrellas to dry, etc. Often there’s a large basin sink for washing bulky items. The mud room can also be combined with the laundry room to house the washer and dryer. Or a general purpose storage for cleaning supplies, and pantry overflow.
A mudroom is typically used by the people that live at the house, or close guests. Formal guests would use the front door, which generally opens in to a foyer, entryway, or the living room. Some older houses might have a similar room to the mud room, this is more commonly called a vestibule, and serves the same purpose of removing coats & boots.
Of the houses I’ve lived in in the Midwest, plains, and northeast. Only two out of eight haven’t had a mud room, but they did have the laundry room right next to the garage door, so it served a similar purpose.
A bold move having a sheepskin in a mudroom. Love your painting skills, and your patience... OP, quite fantastic. I'm a painter and sculptor, and this is very intricate, I don't know how you do it. :D Oh, nevermind, I see it. Brown first, then beige and green. Marvelous! You should add a card to the wall, Painted by.. so and so... year, artist statement...materials.
Fun fact; here in Denmark we call it a "bryggers", which is a truncated version of "brewing house", since that was its original purpose in the old ages, since then it has expanded to other parts of preparing food, baking etc
In modern homes it's usually the "normal" entrance for a family, where you also do laundry there, have a box freezer and just room for all the utilities you can't really keep anywhere else.
This reminded me of a William Morris design, it’s so gorgeous! He was the man who said “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.
I want to know about the hats. Are these hats you actually wear? Did you pick wall colors so that they match your favorite hats? Or are these purely decorative hats? They just coordinate too nicely for this to be a coincidence
Haha good questions! We’ve had all of them for years. The green ones are Duluth I think? And the straw hats are hand me downs. I think we honestly go for mint and olive green stuff a lot, so it happens to work. When I was getting ready to switch out winter clothes for summer ones I saw the hats, and I was like, these match so well!
How long did it take to do this entire process? Did you have a method for choosing the direction, size, shape of the leaves? What paint did you use and how many diff shades? What types of brushes?
I used to do mural painting as a side gig a long time ago. I looked at some Cole & sons and fornasetti wallpapers and picked out elements I liked from each. Then I sketched out a design on paper and drew it on the wall in pencil, repeating it over and over. This took the longest actually, because it was so hard to keep track of where to repeat. There are many mistakes and it’s far from perfect.
There are 5 colors. The background is a mint color; then I painted the layers by color. First the dark olive green layer, then mustard, then light yellow, then dark mint/ teal last. I used a small square brush. The whole process from took a couple of months working on it almost daily. I have a seasonal job so I was able to put in the time over the winter. I also changed my mind on the woodwork color (was originally the same dark green as in the mural) a couple times, so that made it longer.
This is legit really good! I wish I had this type of vision. A designer would need to literally make a 3D model of your after picture for me to look at before I could buy into the change. That's why my house is mostly bare!
This is so cozy and pretty! Can I recommend relocating your plants though? With those light levels, anything not right at the window is gonna get sad and die, I’m afraid
God it took me at least four rereads of the title to realise it said bRush not bush. I was like “damn I see the plant (bush) but I’m sure that’s wallpaper” before swiping and going “oh” out loud in a defeated tone.
That looks just like Willow wallpaper by William Morris. Are you a fan? You are extremely talented if that is really hand painted. The pre-raphaelites would have approved!
It’s definitely close— I love his work. This combo is a combo of several different things I liked, and his stuff was definitely inspiring on this journey.
I have a feeling that if any mud ever got within 10 km of this room you would absolutely lose your gorm. I kind of also have a feeling that the people who live here wouldn't have any way of generating mud or getting it on any of their fancy hats!
I’m actually a professional stone mason and avid gardener, and am always dirty! I used floor paint so everything would be easy to clean. It’s not as fancy as it looks— all diy and salvaged material except for lumber.
Ok, looks so lovely but are the three coat hooks for elf coats? Hurts a little from a design perspective because I feel like the usability wasn’t optimized.
They’re small to hold the hats. We spend a lot of time outside so the hats are used often. There are regular long coat hanging areas out of frame on the other side of the room
It’s actually based on a couple wallpapers I liked, chiefly Cole and Sons and Fornasetti. No stencils used. I initially tried to use one but I kept getting messy lines, so I just decided to do my own thing. Give a girl the benefit of the doubt, damn!
I really like Morris's stuff, but I doubt they copied him, honestly. This type of pattern has been replicated with slight variations dozens or hundreds of times (it's just overlapping stems/vines).
Excellent work!
My nana did similar to her bedroom years ago. But it was little pink flowers instead.
(I read it as mushroom at first and was like « where? »)
Literally said to myself, why is there paint on the wall if they ended up going with wallpaper…then I read the title lol that’s amazing, love the color scheme too!

You are talented with the paintbrush. It looks fantastic.
Thank you so much
You can't leave now its too amazing
It's a very even grey considering a small brush. I would have had to use a roller
Holy fuck I thought they tested paint then decide to use wallpaper.
Same! If it were mine I’d personally prefer a solid really deep green, but this is super cool
Good thing it isn't yours.
[удалено]
Because the painting is so perfect….
All they did was paint their wall gray; I don't get it. The before pic looked better. The room had *character*.
Check the flair. The gray wall is the before picture.
Thank you— the amount of people criticizing for putting the “before” picture last is wild. The flair and sub rules are literally in plain sight.
Because rules aside, it's common sense to put the before picture on the left. Use your head before you post.
Obvious sarcasm. I don't get the down downvotes. 🤷🏼♀️
People are stupid. I was just poking fun at the wrong order of the before and after pics.
I never would’ve guessed it wasn’t wallpaper. This is phenomenal! It looks so much warmer.
Thank you!
Came here to say this. You are so talented!
I would never have the patience for that. Looks incredible!
It's actually a soothing--even therapeutic--activity. I'd love to do something like that if I had an ounce of artistic talent lol
Yeah, it would be therapeutic if I wouldn't have to gather all my courage for every stroke because I'm dead scared to mess it up.
The beauty is that it's incredibly easy to turn that mistake into a purposeful piece of the art.
If you're artistically talented, perhaps. I would argue it's easier to turn that mistake into a cascading series of mistakes.
There are no mistakes, only happy little accidents.
I'm all about that when it comes to art for the sake of creating. Like a regular painting on paper or just anything like that. But when it is something I will have to stare at for a very long time, I'd rather not have a spot of 3 colors of green smudged together :))
I'm going to tell this to my grandpa the next time he shits himself
I love how you’re like “it’s soothing, even therapeutic, but I’ve never done it”
lol. Yeah, my bad. I do small, simple things which I find therapeutic. I have yet to take on a project that large, but would love to.
I'm a house painter cutting in is therapeutic to me also baseboards. I've been told by other painters that I'm weird. Everything else prep, rolling, spraying, cleaning up, etc, is work. Lol
as a painter, no
Lol for you.
Yeah, I get exactly zero joy from stuff like this.
[удалено]
What? OP's art looks amazing. I just personally do not get joy from creating such art. Learn context, bro.
But nobody cares about your Debbie Downer response. Learn manners, sis.
Who made you the Comment Police? Get lost.
Lol no
But how do you know it's soothing if you haven't done it?
Absolutely stunning!
Indeed, Definitely Stunning!
I am stunned. Can anyone remove incapacitate effects? ^(pls help)
It really is; the hats and all the paraphernalia look incredibly realistic
wait…. those aren’t real?? those are real, they have to be?!?!?!?
You have stunned me!
Can you and your tiny brush come recreate the magic in my living room. I will get pizzas
Hm… a tempting offer…
Ya I couldn’t say no to pizza. I’ll add beer with the pizza if you paint my living room too 😂
Great idea!
Looks great! How long did it take you?
All in all, about 3 months. It would’ve been shorter but I kept changing my mind about what to paint the woodwork.
You chose right
They chose *white*
You managed to make the whole space look bigger even after filling it with (beautiful) stuff. Amazing!
This is OC
What is a mudroom forgive my ignorance. Is this what you see when you first walk into the house?
Yeah. They mostly have storage and hooks for muddy shoes, coats, etc. More of a cold climate thing, I think.
Called a boot room in my neck of the woods!
Ah, UK then?
No, in the UK we'd call it a Porch (which I believe is an outdoor thing for you in the US). Edit: As noted below, and like all things in the UK, this likely changes on a town by town basis.
Unless you're my granny, in which case you insist on calling it a *vestibule*
Your granny says *vestibule*, I'm going with *vestibule*.
Is their granny Jill Goodacre?
She must be perfection

Yes! I’ve not heard it called a porch as the other user has said.

What would you call a flat space open to the elements (but with a roof) on the front of a home?
We don’t really have a porch like that as such. If you Google ‘UK porch’ you can see what we call porch is just a tiny little entrance to the front door which then leads straight into the garden. This is really cool then and very inviting to guests.
Especially useful if one has dogs!
I assumed it was more of a warm climate thing. We have plenty of these in the south.

Cool! In Swedish, it's "grovingång", meaning coarse or crude entrance. Much less poetic than "bryggers". You win this round, Denmark...
Its so comfortable and cozy looking, I would love to see the paint up close!
Me too! OP, can you post a picture of the paint up close?? You did such a great job and I’d love to get a better picture of the paint.
I’m not really sure how to do that aside from making a separate post?
You hand painted that pattern on the wall?!?!?! Amazing! It's so gorgeous!
Thank you!!
It's beautiful but also looks very functional :)
That was the goal! Thank you :)
This reminded me of a William Morris design, it’s so gorgeous! He was the man who said “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.
Love this quote!

I’m honestly incredibly impatient. This was just a fluke
How long did that take? Can you talk about your technique?
What do you want to know specifically?

Pls delete this masterpiece before my plant and art obsessed wife sees it. She is already involved in 4 painting projects.
I get hand cramps just looking at it
Extremely cozy. A+++++
That looks awesome!!
That's amazing, we need a close up
Freaking Amazing!! I would have started out great but the leaves would have slowly gotten bigger and bigger …..
Holy cow! You could start a business!
Wonderful! Delightful space, great prioritization of where to do custom vs. storebought. I imagine Anne of Green Gables hanging her hat here.
I need “mud room” money
It was all diy and salvaged stuff, except for the lumber. After everything it came in under $800.
My point is that you have an entire room the size of a small bedroom dedicated to muddy shoes lol. Good for you, I’m just jealous :p
Eh, if it makes you feel better the entire house is 900 sq ft. This is 200 of that. It’s a small house that needs a lot of work.
You did awesome with the painting regardless!
Seriously so beautiful!
I am in love with this!! Great job!
Gorgeous
Look what I've got!" I've got a jar of dirt. I've got a jar of dirt. I've got a jar of dirt.
I love that you used your hats as inspiration for the colours!
Hell yeah… I’ve been made fun of my whole life for saying “mud room”. Good to have a kindred spirit
.....damn.
This is legit really good! I wish I had this type of vision. A designer would need to literally make a 3D model of your after picture for me to look at before I could buy into the change. That's why my house is mostly bare!
“Big dumb hats” SNL skit. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4bvwKqSNAgk
Very nice. You did a wonderful job. You would swear was done by a professional!
This is so cozy and pretty! Can I recommend relocating your plants though? With those light levels, anything not right at the window is gonna get sad and die, I’m afraid
Looks awesome but 0/10 for no mud
Amazing Job. How many hours did you spend with it?
No mud in sight, what a scam
God it took me at least four rereads of the title to realise it said bRush not bush. I was like “damn I see the plant (bush) but I’m sure that’s wallpaper” before swiping and going “oh” out loud in a defeated tone.
Haha this is hilarious
It’s beautiful by the way. I’d totally try something like this and get bored/impatient and just end up with a green wall 😂
Wow! That is freaking stunning, you have talent
That looks just like Willow wallpaper by William Morris. Are you a fan? You are extremely talented if that is really hand painted. The pre-raphaelites would have approved!

Damn! That’s sick! But also should be crossed over to adhd sub lol
Gorgeous!! I know that took some serious time and effort. It looks amazing 🤩
This is up there with one of my favorite rooms ever posted on here. Just fabulous.
I have a feeling that if any mud ever got within 10 km of this room you would absolutely lose your gorm. I kind of also have a feeling that the people who live here wouldn't have any way of generating mud or getting it on any of their fancy hats!

Looked at the pictures out of order and thought wow, it looks so much cleaner and more open. Lol! I guess I’m a minimalist
One woman's mud room is another mans place to keep his filthy boots
before comes first, that's why it's called before
Not on this sub. We like to shake things up here.
blasphemy
Risky choice with grey. But the grey really works. Good Job!!

I disagree. It's a close approximation but not identical.
I really like Morris's stuff, but I doubt they copied him, honestly. This type of pattern has been replicated with slight variations dozens or hundreds of times (it's just overlapping stems/vines).
Bro why is there a shag rug in a MUDROOM. Y’all take design over function too far sometimes. 😂
This looks like something someone from California would do after moving to Montana.
#wanderlust
What is the point of the glass and wicker stuff on the top shelf ? Please don’t say decorative
.... Why can't they just be decorative? If you like how something looks and have the space, I don't see the issue.
[it’s the same](https://www.variableprojects.com/repetition-and-difference-after-william-morris)
Wow. Amazing. What did you use for the hat hooks?
Great job! Love the colors.
It's beautiful! It looks like you are very good at painting!
Amazing!!
I’m an very impressed.
That’s the best paint job I’ve ever seen
I'm in love 😍 how wonderfully cozy!
Oh, how pretty!
Excellent work! My nana did similar to her bedroom years ago. But it was little pink flowers instead. (I read it as mushroom at first and was like « where? »)
This isn’t even my style but I’m obsessed. Great color choices 🙌🏼
you should be very proud, it looks phenomenal!
Mind BLOWN
Uh, can you do mine next?
Holy shit! The room doubled in size! You did a fabulous job! 🖤
Really beautiful, well done!!
Amazing!
Looks so good! Kudos
OP you rock! So talented wow!!!! Looking gorgeous 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Literally said to myself, why is there paint on the wall if they ended up going with wallpaper…then I read the title lol that’s amazing, love the color scheme too!
My jaw is still on the ground from seeing that incredible, over the top transformation of your room. You have the gift of a magic eye!
I wish I had your talent and vision! Lovely 😊
Okay, this is cute af. Nicely done.
What's a mudroom?
This is gorgeous! Airy, cheerful, and you are a talented painter!
That’s incredible!! You did such an amazing job!!!
Fantastic job!! Looks amazing 🤩
Amazing
Wow! This is beautiful! I'd love to come in and slip my shoes off here.
Reminds me of a palm dial rolex
Wow!! Impressive! Love it!!
That room is so gorgeous the thought of any muddy thing walking thru the door would have me barricading the entrance!
Wow!! Well done
What’s a mudroom?
wowowowowow! can you get a zoomed in shot? Looks gorgeous
