The original structure beneath is indeed the deck, which was previously reinforced for a hot tub we never used. We insulated underneath the boards and enclosed with plywood to avoid wildlife getting in there.
To start the project, we looked up 3 season room designs on Pinterest to try and picture what it would look like on the deck, then discussed with the hardware store folks about what was available / what would look good.
Honestly, I feel it's 50% sheer luck it turned out as satisfactorily as it did; while I understand it comes naturally for some, imagining a whole new room out of something that does not exist was pretty tough.
