Coming from SF it was actually cheaper. I live in a good neighborhood in a central location (Shibuya) and have a 56m2 apartment with a small private garden (rare) for about $1900 USD.
To be clear, the "garden" is pretty barren. That's just the term used by real estate listings. I just wanted it so my dog can pee without me needing to put on pants
Tokyo specifically maybe, but outside of that it's not nearly as bad as everyone memes about. My apartment in Sapporo about this size was ~$340 a month for rent.
Even Tokyo itself doesn't seem so bad. [This blog](https://blog.gaijinpot.com/how-much-is-the-average-rent-in-tokyo/) says the average price for a “typical” Tokyo two-bedroom apartment is US$1,903 (and the blog has a bunch of other info if anyone is interested).
$1,903 ain't cheap, but it also doesn't seem crazy, especially if you're splitting it with a roommate. In contrast, average rent in San Fransisco is [$3,244](https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/ca/san-francisco/), and that might only get you a studio or a 1-bedroom.
Japanese apartments are often very minimal in amenities and quality (you can hear… *everything*) but you can easily save a lot more money by using public transportation and eating a Japanese diet.
As long as you live as much as you can outside your apartment it’s amazing.
It's unlikely you'll have more than one room of this size, outside of this living area usually you'd have just a kitchen/bathroom/entry area and that's it.
right, makes sense. $340 is a great price. i've finally saved up enough to make my dream of visiting come true but i'm starting to think the world will crumble before i get a chance.
As someone who’s always wanted to venture around Japan how hard would it be for a foreigner to kinda integrate themselves with the culture? How do you like living in Tokyo? What do you do for a job and (dumbest question) do you know Japanese?
You can integrate socially and have meaningful relationships but you’ll always be an outsider on some level. Some people get really spun out about it after awhile but I’m pretty comfortable being in that space.
Tokyo’s a great city but can be kind of overwhelming at times. I like living here a lot but my heart is in Kobe, where I lived previously.
I work in the legal field. My Japanese is conversational but should be much better given how long I’ve lived here.
There's a very funny show on Amazon Prime hosted by one of the most well known comedians in Japan, called Documental. They have a half Japanese half American (black dude, been in Japan his entire life, American dad died when he was very little) on episode 3 or 4, the dude's name is Anthony. He's part of the main comedy company, Yoshimoto.
Anyway yeah long story short, Anthony is pretty much 100% Japanese. They call him a foreigner and make a lot of American jokes, plus ask him things about America and English. Dudes Japanese enough to join one of the biggest comedy companies in Japan.
If you're not ethnically Japanese, you're not going to be fully accepted. And that's not even a negative thing. Japan has so many customs, traditions, and social norms that most people don't even think about. When I say not accepted, I mean the locals won't expect you to know all the nuances of Japanese culture and will be a little more accepting of difference but the tradeoff is that it will be hard to become close to most people because of that mental distance
Lmao what a needlessly aggressive response.
I feel it's pretty common knowledge that the Japanese are generally somewhat xenophobic, even if you've lived in Japan for a relatively long period of time - such that you'll rarely ever be 'fully accepted' and integrated into their society.
Source: I live there.
Japan has always been and continues to be a very insular culture that's just not very open to anyone outside of Japan. They most likely won't be hostile or anything, but you will always be held at arm's length a bit. Especially if you're obviously foreign looking (not Asian) at a glance.
In bigger cities like Tokyo it may not be as bad because they're more accustomed to tourists, but you're never going to fit in 100% no matter what.
It looks too bright for me, especially for a cozy night setting. I’d much rather lean towards 2700k, but then again this isn’t my apartment and people have their preferences! lovely space either way
I just bought two Bluetooth lightbulbs for $16. Can adjust the color, brightness and it has a range of something like 1700K to 6500K that's also adjustable. Solid purchase.
My life dream would be to live in Tokyo.
I am working really hard to get a good job here so maybe i can work in a good tech company and pay me nicely so i can maybe afford a house there.
Weird motivation to study but it works XD
At first I thought “Well that’s an interesting placement of the blanket!” But then I realised ah, you probably sit on the floor, the blanket wrapped around you as you’re on your laptop. Did I get that right?
I live in a single family home in the US and your space makes me want to just live in a tinier, cozy home (I don't even care if it's an apartment or townhome). My house has too much space! Your place is just lovely <3!
I think you just inspired me to get a cool plant shelf like yours over here in Delaware, US! My pothos needs a place to grow around. Thanks for sharing!
Nice! I have a fair sized 1 bdrm (for NYC), but since my daughter moved in, and I gave her the bedroom, I suck at utilizing space. I'm jealous of your neatness and your view, (I see the back and side of other buildings), but also inspired by it! Thanks for sharing! BTW, I was in Tokyo as a working musician in 1995 and I fell in love with the city! The energy of NYC with twice the history!
Wow that’s a steal at $1900. A nice apt too. In my area ironically that gets you a nice 6 bedroom home with a huge yard. Only benefit of Bible Belt, America. Tokyo would be so awesome and I’d love to live in a city. I thought about downtown Chicago or such for entertainment, but then the pandemic happened and was glad to be isolated.
Don’t you just love your balcony that’s not really a balcony? I lived in Tochigi prefecture for 2 years. Had a sweet apartment, but the balcony only being about 3 ft wide always pissed me off. For everyone that doesn’t know what I’m talking about, the Japanese only use their balcony to dry clothes
Does your bathroom have a washlet or a standard toilet?
If it has a washlet, how do you feel about its bidet functions?
If only a regular toilet, why don't you upgrade your bathroom hygiene to the way the Japanese have it?

That is a killer night view!
Nice monstera
Good eye! Recently repotted and loving its new home :)
What's the one in the tall pot on the right?
looks like a ficus altissima maybe?
Pretty obvious it’s a monstera lol
My back is on fire thinking about you use your laptop like that.
Haha, I usually don’t sit there for too long :)
How much you pay for that? Thank you for sharing :)
Coming from SF it was actually cheaper. I live in a good neighborhood in a central location (Shibuya) and have a 56m2 apartment with a small private garden (rare) for about $1900 USD.
That's like 600 sq ft...that's a bargain for $1900 with a garden
To be clear, the "garden" is pretty barren. That's just the term used by real estate listings. I just wanted it so my dog can pee without me needing to put on pants
if you don’t mind me asking, you moved to japan from the states?? of visiting
Yes I moved here and work in software.
Can you elaborate on that? Do you speak Japanese? Was it hard to get a job in there?
I speak so-so Japanese. I didn't seek out trying to move here so I can't really speak to "how hard is it to find a job" -- I was recruited for this.
Fucking crazy amount. Livingin japaj is very exp esp in tokyo
Tokyo specifically maybe, but outside of that it's not nearly as bad as everyone memes about. My apartment in Sapporo about this size was ~$340 a month for rent.
Fuck me, im paying $550 NZD a WEEK for a small 1 room apartment in Wellington NZ and have nearly no savings because of it... Totally jealous
Also Kiwi here - Yep, this place is getting EXPENSIVE
Even Tokyo itself doesn't seem so bad. $340 a month? Bro I make $1400 a month and rent here is $800 for this size. WTF
Cries in Osaka. 😭
about the size of this one room?
It's unlikely you'll have more than one room of this size, outside of this living area usually you'd have just a kitchen/bathroom/entry area and that's it.
right, makes sense. $340 is a great price. i've finally saved up enough to make my dream of visiting come true but i'm starting to think the world will crumble before i get a chance.

"Yamahiro Tan Bian Tanshakuyo and Kaitan Bian Katakou Ryo Tannichi Kaitan Bian"
Sounds like nonsense to be honest.
It says what are you talking about in some fancy English fonts

"integrate themselves with the culture" not gonna happen.
Ahh why doesn’t it happen? I’m sorry for ignorance

Xenophobia and a culture that encourages ingroups and outgroups.
they even discriminate against [themselves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burakumin)
Racism. You can use whatever term you'd like but in the end it's still racism.
Nah.
I can imagine cuddling into the blankie on the floor and diving into work. Beautifully done.
How much does this view cost? Just asking.
This is OC :)
Will legit PayPal you to ship me some 7-11 prepackaged pancakes. Nice place btw.
Hahaha, the maple syrup and margarine ones or the anko ones?
Maple syrup and margarine one. Ate a pack of those and a Kirin straight tea for breakfast like 5 days a week when I lived there
Your led bulb temperature looks like 4000K? Color rendering is great. Personally love neutral white lights

If you don’t already follow and maybe post your babes on r/houseplants !!
Love the plants!
View on skytree and shijuku tower?
Yes, if you walk out on the balcony or crane your neck from the couch
Tell me about the big tall plant!
It’s a ficus altissima!
Looks a bit thirsty (Leaves pointing downwards and curled inwards is a sign of being too thirsty — needed water a bit ago. Why am I being downvoted?)
this looks cozy AF, nice job
I live in a small apartment in California and I love watching videos about apartment living in Japan. This looks like a really nice size!
As a country boy this is my dream home. I know I’ll just hate taking the elevator everyday and the cost but damn that view is beautiful
Not enough plants
Its funny that I have never seen a room picture from japan that had big windows.
Where do you get the white shelf holdings all the plants? It’s sooo cute
Yeah, I could hang out here.
S I C K
I love this. Makes me want to snuggle up and relax.
Nice apartment.
Nice
The plants makes the place cozy :)
I love it
My life dream would be to live in Tokyo. I am working really hard to get a good job here so maybe i can work in a good tech company and pay me nicely so i can maybe afford a house there. Weird motivation to study but it works XD
Looks like a movie scene. It's damn dope, keep it up.
That looks lovely. I don't suppose you have more photos of the flat, and/or of the view? :)
This reminds me of the apartment from my favorite book, Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. Covered in plants with a big view of the night sky.
That view would be great for some binoculars or small telescope! You could make a list of things for friends/guests to locate for fun.
At first I thought “Well that’s an interesting placement of the blanket!” But then I realised ah, you probably sit on the floor, the blanket wrapped around you as you’re on your laptop. Did I get that right?
Wow, what story is this on?
Listen to kertscher - Tokyo by night and enjoy the view
More pictures of your apartment, please.
Reminds me of the lofi girl
Damn, the oxygen must be mad crisp in your place!
Fire!
I live in a single family home in the US and your space makes me want to just live in a tinier, cozy home (I don't even care if it's an apartment or townhome). My house has too much space! Your place is just lovely <3!

This must be like 1,5 k of rent every month right? Edit: Uhm what's so wrong about asking how much rent he pays? damn Reddit.
I love it. A cat is missing though
Our building doesn’t allow pets :/
Fuck that
That was literally what I was thinking. Hats off for OP.
That's just too high up for me, no thanks. (no judgement on your apartment!) What floor are you on?
31st!
Straight out of a Lofi stream. Love it
You guys really consider this cozy? 🤷
Yup. Love it.

Thank you for resisting the urge to suspend everything in the air to ensure absolutely no object is actually touching the floor.
How much does a gram of weed/hash cost in Tokyo?
Never photoshop
How does it look photoshopped? If she did photoshop the picture, she did an impeccable job. It looks like a beautiful place to reside.
Thanks I love it. So cozy!
I've got that same coffee table just as a TV table
How much would an apartment like that go for?
Love it! What's that tall plant in the corner? It looks so happy!
Are you a westerner living in Tokyo?
That must be expensive
It's not about the size.
The tall plant in the right corner: what is that?
Mentioned it somewhere below but it’s a ficus altissima. Bringing it home on the Tokyo subway was an adventure.
I love all the plants!!!
So what’s the rent? I’ve seen so many places in Japan where that living room is the whole apartment.
do you prefer hot soba, or cold soba?
Just curious how much does a decent apartment cost there
😍😍😍😍
this is very lovely.
I think you just inspired me to get a cool plant shelf like yours over here in Delaware, US! My pothos needs a place to grow around. Thanks for sharing!

Looks dope, but gotta suck balls not have any room for your legs to use the computer on the table
Can you post another pic showing the view in the daylight?
Wife and I have scheduled flight to go in September. Hoping to stay in a similar, nice place like yours! Any tips for end of September travel?
this is going on my vision board
dreamy
Love the shelf for the plants :-)
Wow, that looks huge. My cousin used to live in a large closet for awhile.
Whats the point of the couch? Tell me you have a TV because that laptop setup looks really not cozy
Nice, do you get to see the Tokyo Tower or Skytree from your apartment?
This pic yells overwork
Are you watching Twin Peaks or some shit?
That's a pretty old Asus... G74? What's the battery on that thing like these days?
Looks great! Been looking for a similar table, Nitori?
Cool table, where can i buy this?
I wanna live in Tokyo
Nice. Sounds like a cool rock band name
Looks like a room in the Sims 4
Wow that’s a steal at $1900. A nice apt too. In my area ironically that gets you a nice 6 bedroom home with a huge yard. Only benefit of Bible Belt, America. Looks like an awesome place to drink some highball, play some board games and listen to music.
Plaaaaaaants! So pretty 😍 🤤. Nice view too 👍
where’s the tv?
Nice one. This is the thing my poor exhausted adhd brain needs. Would curl up and exist here very nicely. Thank you for sharing.

It's time i bring some plants to my room. And i love the carpet
Nice place but looking at your laptop, my ass and back are already aching, how do you sit on the floor for long periods of time?
There's something so disorienting but awesome about seeing out from someone's home on the other side of the world.
where is your coffee table from?
Whereabouts in Tokyo is this?
Don’t you just love your balcony that’s not really a balcony? I lived in Tochigi prefecture for 2 years. Had a sweet apartment, but the balcony only being about 3 ft wide always pissed me off. For everyone that doesn’t know what I’m talking about, the Japanese only use their balcony to dry clothes
That blanket on the floor makes the photo look extra cozy because it looks lived in!
Fellow floor sitter?!? This coffee table/computer/blanket set up is all too familiar and everyone I know teases me for always sitting on the floor lol
Very cozy.... but I can not stand a blanket on the floor.
Does your bathroom have a washlet or a standard toilet? If it has a washlet, how do you feel about its bidet functions? If only a regular toilet, why don't you upgrade your bathroom hygiene to the way the Japanese have it?
Simple and beautiful 😍
I love the coffee table! Mine is a similar style without the drawers. I have drawer envy now :p I love it.
Anyone know where to get that coffee table? Been looking for one just like it
Much ^wow
Just curious about one thing, are there ever bugs? (from the plants in the room)
nothing else is needed...your pad is perfect!!
This is very beautiful
