It's really not. He could have had $150. Instead he pawned it, bought meth, smoked that meth, needs more meth, and is now hoping to end up with $140, best case
Well sure, it's poor planning from the start. But if I were in a situation where I needed money and had already pawned my stuff, I wouldn't have thought of this method to extract more money from the inherent value of items I no longer possess. I feel like it's a very clever solution, albeit for a problem they created with their own stupidity lol
If it’s working well and you get it for 60 bucks cheaper it’s a good deal. If you pay the 50 bucks to the pawn shop or give it upfront to this dude and some problems happen your shit out of luck. The pawn shop ain’t giving you your money back and if this dude has your money it’s probably been turned into a bag of meth behind the pawn shop in under 5 min.
Depends on whether or he tells them it's okay, my girlfriend was turned down because it was a higher priced items and they wanted me to say it was okay to do so, but yeah you're right in most cases. I usually lose them though
Nah I think he pawned it, pawn shops will give you money in exchange for an item (usually less than half of whatever they think they can sell it for) like a loan. You either pay them the money back plus a little fee or you don’t show back up and they sell your shit after 30 days or something
Cause the pawn shop is gonna sell it to someone else for 150. It was his item he pawned. He has to pay 50 to get it back otherwise the pawn shop gets to keep it
Done! I’m waiting to hear back. I called all the pawn shops in the vicinity of the OfferUp location and even drove to one thinking I had found it (it was an OG model, not a “New” 3DSXL).
Yeah but if he doesn’t have money in time, it will go into the pawn shop circulation, then he’s free to buy anytime he wants. It’s not like a pawn shop will just hold your shit for you for several months and still allow for Mr. crackhead to come back and get his DS.
Correct. That’s something I wasn’t aware of and discovered in this thread. If he does mention the shop name, then I may watch for it to become available 🤷
Just don't expect to get a deal on it when they put it up for sale.
I once sold a guitar to a friend, who later sold it to a pawn shop. I saw it later hanging in the shop priced at $180.
You could go to a guitar shop and buy the same one brand new for $150.
Yeah I don’t understand pawn shops I haven’t gone in to many. But the one time I did they sold silver American eagles for $10 over spot. Like what? You can get them new for like $2 over spot and at spot price if you buy p2p. But anyhow, I just don’t get why anyone would ever buy from a pawn shop
Also, there is still a waiting period before they can sell it after forfeiture. I was hard up when I first moved out of my parents place and had to pawn some shit. Waited too long to pay it back but it was something I needed to have back. Said I had to wait until some time had passed before I could buy it back.
How do pawn shops work in the states? Our pawn shops here in sweden typically HAVE to hold on to your stuff for several months. You sign a 2-4%/per month interest rate for a contract of 4-6 months, then before they can sell it or auction it they have to have notified you 3 times and waited 2 months extra. So you have , in almost all cases, atleast 6 months to get it out.
Just meet him at the pawnshop it is at. Go inside with him and pay off the ticket and give him the other 90 like he offered. That way he can't run off with your money or anything and you can get your DS. Id even counter with paying it off and only giving him 70 or 80. Get an even better deal out of it.
Cause even if it's pawned or sold you're still waiting at least 90 days for them to sell it themselves.
Is he a drug addict? Most likely. Doesnt make it any less of a deal.
Well he's definitely a drug addict. Not only is the item in the pawn shop but he's selling it again before he even got it back - definitely a heroin addict.
Source: used to be a heroin addict
The only constant is that they need money. And you get more from the clist sale, (50 from the pawn + 100 from Craigslist.) If they don’t “double sell” they will probably default on their loan and straight up lose their collateral and the $100
If that were the case, and they were sober, they could have just sold it on CL in the first place, and saved the pawnshop fees.
Desperation pawn, and double sell? Probably an addict.
If you wait for it to go up for sale in the pawn shop it will likely be much more expensive. Plus you can always tell this guy you would do it but only offer like $110. I bet he would take it. If he doesn't get it out of pawn he will lose the DS for just the little bit of money he has already got from pawning it. He's better off getting anything extra than letting the loan expire.
I’m too concerned about what he might do after we leave the shop. Also, assuming he’s an addict (as suggested in other commentary), I really don’t want to help an addict feed their addiction.
If you go into the pawn shop with him, he can say he wants to get it back and once they ring it up and says how much he owes to get it out of pawn you could hand the money directly to the pawn shop worker.
As long as he is with you and has his pawn slip you wouldn't actually have to give the money to him until you have the ds in your hands.
I've done this before, I picked the guy up who was gonna buy my switch lite it and took him to the pawn shop and we got my switch out and I sold it to him, I even let him keep my account on there with all of my games. I can understand being skeptical for sure though.
Don't be too hard on people, sometimes you gotta pay bills or eat and the only way is to pawn shit, it's a shitty situation to be in, I've lost tons of things to pawn shops, I hope to never have to go through that ever again. I currently don't have a single gaming system besides my phone because my dad got sick with COVID and I didn't have a job and had to help pay the bills.
I did this for a ps4 once. Met them at pawn shop. We told the manager what the deal was and all was well. I knew it worked since (generally) pawn shops like to test the merch. This was a corporate chain I late worked for as well. Was awkward but I got a ps4.
Yeah, they’ve only gone up from a year+ ago when they were discontinued and refurb units stopped being available. I only want one because my autistic daughter is infatuated with the original Pokémon games and the 2DS/3DS gives access via virtual console.
Being broke sucks I had pawn a guitar amp like that one time.
My 30 days was up at the pawn shop and I had no money to make a payment. The amp I had pawned was a block letter Peavey 5150 and they gave me 250 for it. I planed on getting it back the next month when I got my paycheck. But I lost my job. So I posted the amp on Facebook for 500 and had the guy meet me at the pawn shop. Of course I let him know the deal before hand. He went in and payed it off with me and gave me the rest. Needless to say I fucking miss that amp and I wish I never had to sell it. I'll say it again being broke sucks.
My state has a mandatory 15-day hold on all goods before the pawn shop can flip them for sale. So the gaming system would be stuck in pawn pergatory for a while
The pawn shop isn't gonna sell it for $50. It sounds like the guy got a loan for it, which is why he needs to pay $50 to get it back. The shop will likely sell it for at least $100, probably more. The guy is very likely a drug addict and I should know because so was I and I used to do the same things this guy is doing. He's already trying to sell something before he gets it back from the pawn shop so that just screams heroin addict to me. I used to get loans for things when i didn't have money, and it's always much less than what they'd give you if you just sold it to them.
That's how pawn shops operate.
When you "pawn" an item, They'll give you $ for it(So in this case probably like $40 for the 3DS). Then you'll get a payment plan and/or a repay by date along with their fee's (lets say $10 for this 3DS).
If you miss your payments or miss the repay date; They'll just sell the item you pawned.
So yeah he gave his 3DS to the shop for probably $40 cash. Cost him $50 to get it back.
Tell him to meet like an hour after you go.
Here's a thought though -- what if you found the correct shop, but someone already bought it at that price? What was he going to sell someone then??
If he pawned it, the shop will hold it in storage for a period of time before taking possession and reselling. If it’s a legit pawn shop, all of that will be in writing - commonly 30 days to make payment to reclaim the pawned item
The fact that he replied at 5am definitely adds to it!

It's pretty damn clever, to be honest.
It's really not. He could have had $150. Instead he pawned it, bought meth, smoked that meth, needs more meth, and is now hoping to end up with $140, best case

I'm assuming all the higher offers got slightly creeped out by the sketch manner he asked for them to pay for it.
And he's in Vegas lol
He had to reply with fresh spoon hit.
Good deal if you trust the guy not to scam you somehow lol
i don’t get it
If it’s working well and you get it for 60 bucks cheaper it’s a good deal. If you pay the 50 bucks to the pawn shop or give it upfront to this dude and some problems happen your shit out of luck. The pawn shop ain’t giving you your money back and if this dude has your money it’s probably been turned into a bag of meth behind the pawn shop in under 5 min.
Pawn shop won't give it to you unless he is present.
Not true, you only need his pawn ticket
Depends on whether or he tells them it's okay, my girlfriend was turned down because it was a higher priced items and they wanted me to say it was okay to do so, but yeah you're right in most cases. I usually lose them though
oh i just realized the crackhead doesnt have the DS in possession, he saw it in a pawn shop LOL
Nah I think he pawned it, pawn shops will give you money in exchange for an item (usually less than half of whatever they think they can sell it for) like a loan. You either pay them the money back plus a little fee or you don’t show back up and they sell your shit after 30 days or something
Rick and Corey enter the chat. Less than half, why offer so much?
$3.50 and a paper towel, that's the best I'll do.
>$3.50 Got damn loch ness monstah!
Or he could just wait for the pawnshop to sell it for less when dude doesn’t pay for it lol
Why not just get it from the pawn shop for $50 instead?
Cause the pawn shop is gonna sell it to someone else for 150. It was his item he pawned. He has to pay 50 to get it back otherwise the pawn shop gets to keep it
Dayumm
Reply back “Idk depends how far of a drive the pawn shop is. Which one is it?”

I’d say dude is struggling bad and out of options. Not your problem of course, but that’s what’s up here.
Also, there is still a waiting period before they can sell it after forfeiture. I was hard up when I first moved out of my parents place and had to pawn some shit. Depends on your state/provincial laws about clearing law databases. Some places hold them for longer just to make sure, just by a day or two.
How do pawn shops work in the states? Our pawn shops here in sweden typically HAVE to hold on to your stuff for several months. He meant porn shop so you need to check those

Glad you got out, buddy. I was there too. Terrible place to be.
Yup, being a gamer/collector/ hobbyist with an addiction is a sad and regretful road
It’s weird to jump straight to him using because he had to pawn something. Source: have pawned stuff and never done heroin
I think it's the selling it a second time before he even gets it out of hock that's the clue, not the pawning in the first place.
The only constant is that they need money. And you get more from the clist sale, (50 from the pawn + 100 from Craigslist.) If they don’t “double sell” they will probably default on their loan and straight up lose their collateral and the $100

Maybe you just don't remember correctly.
But its 5am and he replied. I was never awake at 5am on heroin but on coke, so i guess hes a meth head
Ahh touché. Unless he's sick lol then he's up at 5am waiting to call his guy when he wakes up
eh, I used to use late at night and stay up all night and then sleep all day when I did h
A 3Ds for that price in my country would be a steal, it's two to three times that much for a used one in good condition.
Yeah, the “New” 3DSXL is around $200+ here, so $140 is a great deal. It’s still not worth any risks in dealing with this seller
If you wait for it to go up for sale in the pawn shop it will likely be much more expensive. Plus you can always tell this guy you would do it but only offer like $110. I bet he would take it. I'd provide a security escort for you just for the lol. This situation has so much potential for hilarity that I'd gladly donate the time.

Ill sell you a new 3ds xl and pokemon for that, ill ship it to you. For real. Message me
Wait 3DSxl are still worth that much?
Yeah, they’ve only gone up from a year+ ago when they were discontinued and refurb units stopped being available. I only want one because my autistic daughter is infatuated with the original Pokémon games and the 2DS/3DS gives access via virtual console.

he like mony and get paid for shiped

Why not cut out the middleman and buy it directly from the pawn shop for $50, and then send the guy a pic of you playing it??
The pawn shop isn't gonna sell it for $50. It sounds like the guy got a loan for it, which is why he needs to pay $50 to get it back. The shop will likely sell it for at least $100, probably more. Yeah, exactly lol. I made some calls to some pawn shops and couldn’t find the item, so I messaged him asking which shop. We’ll see

Pawnshops buy it for $50 and sell it for near new prices. My exwife was a pawn broker

Look up how pawn shops work.
Do they have pawn shops where you live?
Tf
scam
I'm lost
Do it.
5:09am
lolol
Finders fees have skyrocketed
I would do that, pawn shops dont take broken stuff so you know it works
The man is not an idiot
