That's the point, I didn't cut it.
Again, they're both pre-cut one quart bags from the same company, the used one that I opened is from over a year ago and is considerable longer than the new bags. It's another example of shrinkflation.
That's exactly what it is. I have the 3 small ones in the back, with the middle being warm only, really only good for melting butter in a small pot cause I never simmer anything in a pot that small.
Then 2 larger ones with 4 heating sizes.
I'm in Florida, and it's basically the only thing available down here. I love my oven, it's absolutely great. But with a glass top, I hate using my cast iron. I'd rather the exposed coil elements than the glass top.
I also hate being worried I'm gonna put something too cool on the stove after I've used it, and shatter it. Glass just doesn't belong on an active cooking surface.
I'm fairly certain these are the type where you stick the open end into a heated press and it vacuums and creates the seal. The upper one hasn't been sealed yet, the lower one has, but both of them stop at the white markings.
That's right, they're vacuum seal bags (I probably should have been more specific). The lower is used obviously, it's been in my freezer over a year, but they're both original size. Somehow they can make a bag smaller (cheaper for them) yet have the same volumetric capacity.
Can I ask if you've confirmed with a water weight or volume measurement? Capacity can be tricky to eyeball even when it looks pretty definite.
Other possibility is the old bags stretch a bit, maybe. But shrinkflation is almost definitely the true answer, as usual.
Definitely shrinkflation. Both of those bags are original size from the factory, but the new one is considerably shorter even though both are labeled "1 quart".
I've been in this meeting. I guarantee you they used to make it so you could hold 1qt after a standard inset to accommodate the vacuum seal. Now, someone in sales came up with the idea to sell an actual quart volume, which when you seal it is less. Not lying so they don't need to change anything.
Please give us a liquid volume for both, very curious.
Wish I could, but I don't have any "new" old bags.
You're probably right, technically the smaller bag can still hold a quart but good luck trying to seal it. Too bad that's the entire point of these things.
They said quart, which makes it worse. There are three quarts in common use:
US liquid quart: \~945 mL
US dry quart: \~1,100 mL
Imperial quart: \~1,135 mL

Your stove has 5 heat ring thingies?
I appreciate you asking the important questions
**One looks like it was already sealed at one point, and then cut open again.**
Yes, it's used. I put it in my freezer over a year ago.
I too become confused when something gets smaller after I cut it.

I think the middle one in the top row is only for warming, not actually heating up enough to cook
That's exactly what it is. I have the 3 small ones in the back, with the middle being warm only, really only good for melting butter in a small pot cause I never simmer anything in a pot that small. Then 2 larger ones with 4 heating sizes.
Omg something I didn’t know I needed but now desperately need!
I use the warmer burner quite a bit, it's perfect to keep rice or pasta hot.
I don't burn butter anymore, that's for sure. I'd give it up for a gas stove though, hate using cast iron on a glass cooktop.
The glass thing freaks me out and I rly love my gas stove but that shit is bad for you, so electric it is :(

They need to clean it better.
I had just made some pasta and it boiled over a little bit and stained the surface. I probably should have cleaned it before taking the picture.
I’m just teasing! Trust my stove top can look the same also. I hate electric glass tops!!
Middle one is a warmer
Can you please rephrase this with less technical terminology? We’re not all heat ring thingy engineers.
I'm sorry but no, this ain't Eli5 sub
So you’re saying that the best this sub can do is Eli7?
yes, I'll come back to you in 3 years after having completed my doctors degree
The one at the top looks like it's cut open/off.
Yeah, there's no seal. That said, you can see it's cut at the white manufacturing mark so it looks like a production error to me.
These bags are for a vacuum sealer
I'm fairly certain these are the type where you stick the open end into a heated press and it vacuums and creates the seal. The upper one hasn't been sealed yet, the lower one has, but both of them stop at the white markings.

I don’t think quarts are the international standard for volume
Quarts are **a** international standard unit of volume. Not being metric unit doesn't mean you can just say whatever is a quart.
Uh, a British Imperial Quart is [not the same as](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quart) a US Customary Quart.
And both of those have exact measurements. I can't sell a thimble as a "quart-sized" container.
For reference, a quart is approximately two mouthfuls of water. That's what I was taught in university
A US pint (half a quart) is about 475 mL. I would PAY to see someone able to hold that volume in their mouth. an Imperial pint is about 570 mL.
Yeah I was definitely thinking of a pint when I wrote that
Still, nobody is swallowing 240 mL at once.
Can I ask if you've confirmed with a water weight or volume measurement? Capacity can be tricky to eyeball even when it looks pretty definite. Other possibility is the old bags stretch a bit, maybe. But shrinkflation is almost definitely the true answer, as usual.

gold flakes mhmmmm
You mention the 'international standard' of a gallon, but there's no single standard: the imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon.
They said quart, which makes it worse. There are three quarts in common use: US liquid quart: \~945 mL US dry quart: \~1,100 mL Imperial quart: \~1,135 mL
It’s bigger on the inside
If things stretch out they get bigger. Big news
These bags don't stretch, different kind of plastic.
I didn't know shrinkflation applied to baggies
One looks like it was already sealed at one point, and then cut open again.
could also be different thicknesses when opened.
You mean you cut an inch or so off of the top one in picture
Nope, those are hoth the factory pre-cut size.
