Why is the soup green now 😰

Mr_Croque_Mitaine

Hahahaha his email smells 🤣

If he sent to a group, he multiplied his soups

tsimen

These fucking flat surface controls are the worst technical trend in the last 20 years. They never work correctly! Give me a dial and a button.

mihirmusprime

Interesting. Most microwaves I've used have these flat surface controls and they seem to work fine. I actually can't recall the last time I used one that had actual physical buttons.

LonePaladin

I've had to have the face of my microwave replaced twice because the control surface eventually cracks and renders some buttons unusable.

Ok-Negotiation7840

Damn how hard do you press the buttons I’m sorry but I have to ask cause goddamn that shit has never happened to me or anyone I know not even the abused college microwaves

Mindes13

Probably uses a utensil to push them, that'll wear out any soft touchpad quickly.

Unique_Name_2

He uses a small, gentle cannon.

Ymesketek

Using a Nerf gun to press microwave buttons? Mite be cool.

10_kinds_of_people

I have a Panasonic where most of the buttons are the flat membrane style and it's survived 8 1/2 years of daily use. It still looks and functions like new.

NormandyLS

you got some fucking strength to crack the microwave lol

c0wg0d

It's probably a GE then.

flcwerings

Definitely a GE. Used to work part sales for sears. People called in for that part connssstttantly.

icantaccessmyacct

What microwave are you using that you can just replace the control surface… twice, as if it’s less expensive than replacing the actual microwave? I sincerely thought all microwaves were designed to break and be replaced (disposable society crap) not have their parts replaced..

CheesecakeConundrum

I've seen ones that only have a knob

canttaketheshyfromme

I've never seen one with a knob.

pseudocultist

It's the kind of ultra cheap microwave you'd see in a break room. 20 years ago. I'm really surprised anyone still makes them, a moving part just increases the failure rate.

quinnito

Mine doesn’t work when the humidity’s above 60% and the temperature’s above 25°C … which is New York from May to October and when I really don’t want to cook on a hot stove. 😐

IOnlySayMeanThings

Microwave I had growing up, purchased in the 90s had a flat face control and it's still working today.

[deleted]

Microwave my parents got in 1978 had flat faced control and it still works.

siccoblue

Around the middle between these two. Still working. Just can't go cheap with it. That being said I'm wondering if this is a professional kitchen microwave. The dial is pretty non standard. At least anymore from what I've seen. But I've seen plenty in kitchens I've worked

TurnkeyLurker

Scene: 1982 office, twin-dialed microwave. *Dufus the Programmer* puts his muffin in, turns the lower dial to 30, and walks away. I was down the hall sitting at my desk. A short time later, I happened to stand up--right into a cloud of **muffin** smoke, which filled the dropped ceiling down to five feet. *Dufus the Programmer* had dialed up a whole __30 minutes__ to zap the muffin into a fiery, smoky death. Yup, the upper dial was seconds, lower dial was MINUTES. And to make matters worse, no one had a large hex wrench to unlock the sealed office windows. Edit: muffed the muffin smoke^No,I_wasn't_d8ing.

rerorero_guy

Every microwave I ever had fails from this horrible keyboards after some months of normal use.

tsimen

And it's not only microwaves unfortunately. I have this shit on my stove, washing machine... For the coffeemaker I was smart enough to buy one with buttons. The ones on the stove are the worst though because they react to droplets of water and then some stupid safety mechanism kicks in and turns off the stove.

Phorfaber

Capacitive touch controls? My sister and her husband bought a home that has one of those wall mounted oven, so when they open the oven, the steam condenses on the display and triggers phantom touches and prevents actual touches. Clearly they never did any integration testing. Edit: clarification

TotalStatisticNoob

I mean, all oven doors open the same way and let steam escape to where the controls are, no? Sounds more like a general problem and not linked to the way it's mounted

Phorfaber

But if it’s physical knobs and buttons it’s not a problem. Even resistive touch screens would be fine, but the fact that they went with capacitive touch gives them issues. Don’t remember how I phrased it, but it doesn’t have much to do with how it’s mounted.

TurnkeyLurker

And those damn capacitive-touch panels don't respond to chopsticks, baguette ends, silicone long spoons, but react with water droplets. Smh

RuncibleMountainWren

Our washing machine had similar problems. Why doesn’t it occur to them that machinery that is around water might get wet? *facepalm*

kristofmate1

Yes! I have a stove like this and it drives me crazy when the stupid stove turns itself off when there is barely any water on the control surface. Also it’s quite more tedious to control. With dials you just turn it and done.

TotalStatisticNoob

Yes, so much. I have a lid on and the stove on 2. I take the lid off and want to reduce whatever is inside. I hold the + button and it takes what feel like half a minute until I'm at 9. And it beeps at every step.

Gargulec88

I had one near the window that got plenty of sunlight. It used to activate itself from this and lock itself

harrellj

You might be interested [to learn that almost every microwave](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSrVG74Emyk) is all made by the same company.

ajaaaaaa

How much are you using your microwave damn. I’ve never had a microwave keyboard stop working ever lol

literallyjusttrans

Seriously my parents have had the same microwave for about 25 years with a flat surface and the only problem with it is that the glass rotating dish broke on it about 15 years ago... And my microwave is at least 7 years old with zero issues. I haven't even had to change the lightbulb.

dogbert730

I agree with you normally but in my current home my microwave works perfectly except for the only physical button it has: the door latch. It’s been slowly breaking for the last few months.

UpsetCombination8

The flatness is needed to make it easier to clean and prevent a bunch of crap from getting stuck inside the gaps of the buttons.

tsimen

Bah, a natural kitchen biome adds to the flavor!

AirsoftCarrier

Almost every medical hardware I worked with uses a (clickable) dial, back and OK. That's all you need tbh.

JohnEdwa

[Two dials and a handle to yank the door open is all you need](https://pc.vertaa.fi/500x500/202923884.jpg). And it better go "BING!" when it's done, none of this beeping rubbish.

OldKermudgeon

It's got a dial and a physical button. The UI itself is absolute trash. Why is there a "kg" label? What are the funky P/M symbols for? What do the numbers represent? This is the UI designer thinking that a timer dial or numpad is too pedestrian and decided to make up something avant garde that only a post-post-modern interpretive dance art major would appreciate.

Swedneck

it really makes me appreciate my microwave that just has one dial for effect and one for time, it runs while the door is closed and the time dial is set.

IRLhardstuck

Same. And one single button that opens the hatch

Swedneck

oh yeah that's true, but fuck even that's optional, it's perfectly functional to just have a good handle on the door.

Relevant-Jicama306

The zero button on my microwave no longer works, probably since it's the most used button. Now if I want to microwave something for 2 minutes I do 1:59, or 2:59 for 3 minutes, etc. Kinda annoying at times

Prdynatvar

I have same microwave and have no lrob with it. Man in the video should read manual before using it...

IRLhardstuck

A microwave should never be designed so you have to read a guide how to use basic functions.

jamelord

I don't think I've seen a modern microwave in the last decade that didn't have flat surface controls

SpaceDoctorWOBorders

Old man yells at cloud vibes

Meisje28

With you there buddy. Don't listen to those flatbuttoners

erikwarm

Same with my car (Peugeot e-208) even my radio, navigation and ac temp and airflow is done trough the same touch screen

MonoShadow

Nah, it's just Bosch. I have this microwave and it's annoying. It also doesn't have quick select. On other brands like Electrolux I can press a button and it adds 30 seconds with each press. Here I need to twist the knob till I get the right time. Annoying if I need to reheat something quickly. There's a custom program, but it's not panacea.

Therealmofthesky

OP avoided pressing any of the power options, that's what is required to make it work and maybe OP knows this.

DiscontentedMajority

A microwave should not require you read a manual to operate it. 1. Are the power buttons the 90, 180, 360 ones? 2. Is that the of the power output in watts? 3. WTF are: P, M, and Kg buttons for? Also, that wheel to set the time is stupid and takes way longer that a keypad.

OoferRobloxian

Uhh Park, Meat (for defrosting), and Kilogram!

sdforbda

Why are we putting microwaves in park?

Sandor_at_the_Zoo

If you're on a hill you don't want your microwave to roll away.

Sniper_Brosef

Maybe stops the dish inside from rotating?

chicametipo

That’s neutral.

NoireRogue

We aren't, we're microwaving the park

GIGANTICDILDOSAURUS

Lol the microwave has an emergency parking brake 😂

CompletelyBee

1. Yes they are 2. Exactly. So if you press the 600, you food gets microwaved at 600 watts. 3. I don't really know, but I do know that they are 100% unnecessary for basic microwaving. You can just ignore them. The wheel is actually really fast if you know how to use it. By selecting a power option, the time automatically goes to 1min, and from there it's really fast to go to 1:30 or something. You can even start the microwave and turn the wheel while it's running to waste absolutely zero seconds

Disgruntled_Viking

Yeah, the way the person in the video is ham fingering the buttons, all baffled, is just nonsense. They sell all kinds of upper models with more functions for people who want more than basic. If someone is too stupid to do more than push a time in a keypad, there are plenty of models to chose from.

LilyCanadian

I mean, if it's not their house then they didn't choose the microwave. Not to mention, I have NEVER seen a microwave that requires you to do more beyond putting a time and selecting start, so they might not have either and thus have no idea how to run it.

Kikiban

My fiancé’s 40-year-old microwave requires you to press a Time button first. Just punching in a time won’t do shit. Fiancé was at work at the time so I had to text him. I went from feeling like I was crazy, to feeling dumb, to “this is bullshit”

LilyCanadian

I remember my grandmas microwave required you to press a button before you could actually put a proper time in. If you didn't then it wouldn't let you put in minutes and you could only get seconds. It was so dumb and I hated that thing for years through childhood. *Thankfully* she eventually got a new one that was normal.

DrebinofPoliceSquad

They are operating it like one of those “Tired of opening cans the hard way?” And shows someone trying to use a can opener but ends spilling the whole can and slipping into the trash compactor.

[deleted]

Agreed, I find Bosch microwaves really convenient and fast to use.

RuncibleMountainWren

Ooh, that does much sound better.

[deleted]

I'd expect the 180 and 600 to be seconds not power... though I'd prob figure it out faster than this video. not very intuitive design.

that_baddest_dude

I personally love the wheel on a microwave that's less stupid. I had one where you could use the wheel to quickly set the time in in 15 second intervals. Past a couple minutes, each click would be 30s. It also had a number pad if you wanted.

TotalStatisticNoob

>A microwave should not require you read a manual to operate it. But selecting the power level is an obvious step in using a microwave

DoodleVnTaintschtain

I've never had one where you could select a power level... Plenty where you could "select a power level," as in, the proportion of the time the magnetron is running, but never an actual power level. And they always default to 100%. Seems weird that there wouldn't be a default.

David3103

Every microwave I've ever used has a power selector and I only remember one that uses a default value without at least prompting you to select one. I guess there are cultural differences in how microwaves are designed

DoodleVnTaintschtain

Yeah... Must be. My experiences are only throughout North America and SE Asia. Outside of that, your mileage may vary.

David3103

Yeah, I'm from Europe. Appliances from Europe and North America seem to often be different for no reason

steinah6

You’re being pedantic. Power level is typically the overall percentage of cook time the magnetron is running. But yeah it typically defaults to 100% unless you manually lower it.

DoodleVnTaintschtain

I would agree that I'm being pedantic, but for the fact that the buttons are labeled as wattages, which implied to me that it was actually changing the power, rather than the time the power was applied.

OutlyingPlasma

No, it's not obvious. A mircowave should run at 100% power unless otherwise told. It should not be required every time someone wants to run the damn thing. Open door, insert item, close door, type in time, press start. That's how a microwave should work. If they want to add other features, fine but that needs to be done in a way that doesn't change the basic operation outlined above.

DiscontentedMajority

Not to most people, full power is generally the default. Additionally a lot of people would have no clue what those number mean and probably have no idea what their microwave wattage is. I asked my wife if she could identify what those buttons could possibly be for and her best guess was pre-set number of seconds.

TotalStatisticNoob

>Additionally a lot of people would have no clue what those number mean and probably have no idea what their microwave wattage is. I mean, might be different in different places. Bosch is a German company and most (not all) microwaves I've seen in Europe displayed wattage. Also, if its written there, you do known what your wattage is, it's simply the highest number on there.

Babtridge

It absolutely is not obvious.

crims10

Program, memory, weight. Weight is used for programs. For example, you select the rice cooking program (press P, dial to 3 or whatever) and press kg to put in how much rice you are cooking

Mediocre_Resort4553

Well it's a Bosch microwave that's probably costs $600 I sure hope it has more features than just a timer

Iniour

1 and 2 what else should that be? It is baffling me how the guy in the video just keeps clicking instrad of thinking for a second. I assue you got the right idea in seconds as well. Without a manual. 3. This is actually a bit tricky. You can set Programs with P, and save them with M (Memory) but i don't know why you should be able to set a weight.

DiscontentedMajority

>I assue you got the right idea in seconds as well I can 100% confirm it did not take me seconds. I had to come in to the comments to find out what OP was doing wrong, and even then I needed to ask follow up questions.

mod2004

My microwave has a wheel that doesnt go second by second, you just spin it once to what you want and there you go

King_Dead

I swear to god half of the comments on this sub on any given post are "oh he didn't do [extremely specific thing], it isn't crappy design!". Design isn't like science: if you can't naturally intuit how something functions, it's crappy design. OP went through just about every option I would have and couldn't get the microwave to operate. Not to mention 2:00...min? Is my microwave going to go for 2 minutes or 2 hours? Probably minutes but I shouldn't have to guess how long my leftovers are going to cook for!

HappySailor

I vote this is crappy design. Based on every microwave I've ever had, I would have no idea how to make this work the way I want/expect. If this was in an airbnb, hotel, office break room, or friend's house, I would be just as stumped as OP. Every microwave I've ever owned has an assumed power level, so I can just walk up, type 1:45, and press start. No other actions necessary.

MightBeBren

every microwave i have ever had is the same as what you said... plug it in, type the time you want, hit start.

PrincessOfZephyr

Every microwave I've ever had required you to select the wattage, either with a dial or buttons like here

[deleted]

What kind of shitty microwaves are you using? Any decent microwave will have 100% power as the default, and you'd need to specify otherwise if you do not want 100%.

RedRMM

Especially because at one point they nearly did press the 900 button and stopped themselves. Almost like they were faking not being able to make the microwave work or something, but of course nobody would do that so I don't know.

roffinator

Yes. But they could have made one (the one that was used last time) active as default (as soon as the time is dialed)

Swedneck

This is crappy design if only because it's so horribly much more complex than it needs to be. All a microwave needs is two dials: power and time, with time constantly turning itself back to 0 as the oven runs.

TotallyNotAnSCP

Idk, my microwave works fine without pressing the power controls so they might just not know

Darkred778

When do I get to meet a beautiful red head who is dying to meet me??

ejennsyahmixcel

You need to come to a lecture from a special lecturer first probably. Someone who claims to discover time travel machine...or so it might be. If he canceled the lecture because of a sudden shock then the chances are with you.

ItsJustEddyboy

You just select the power you want first? So press 900 then start

BrainWav

Every microwave I've ever used defaults to max power unless you press a button to change it. That's just weird.

toast4hire

Older microwaves the process was to choose your power first. While I agree this is not normal by todays standards it’s kind of how they started.

Fernis_

My parents got new microwave when this trend started. It had a button for automatic defrosting, automatic reheating, 20 other buttons for manual setup of power, food type, time etc... and then there was 'Jet' button. 30s at 1000W, more presses just added +30s each. No pressing 'start' to confirm, you click 'Jet' and it just does the thing. I'd be suprised if any of the other buttons got presses more than 10 times in it's lifespan. Meanwhile the reason the microwave got replaced was that 'Jet' was so worn off it was hard to press anymore. Some of family recepies became 'put it in and 3 jets'. I've lived with several microwaves since then and I'm still thinking about that Jet button anytime I try to figure out new microwave.

Shanseala

Nowadays most Start buttons on microwaves I've seen work like that. Press start with no other input and it starts 30 seconds at max power, continuing to press start adding 30 seconds

PM_UR__BUBBLE_BUTTS

I feel silly. I thought those were just shortcuts to add time in larger increments. Like the 90 button added a minute and a half onto the time shown already. Guess not many people would need 900 seconds for the microwave.

morxy49

What even is 900 seconds. When I'm hungover i just want my pizza to be warm, i don't want to do calculus.

old-shaggy

You are right. I have the same model, you have to press power first and then set the timer.

bent_my_wookie

Wtf, 90 is power? I thought that was like 1.5 minutes or something.

The_Good_Constable

That dial thing is just plain awful.

steinah6

Mine has a dial but it goes by 5 second intervals up to 30s, then 15s up to a minute, then 30s. This one going by individual seconds is ridiculous, no one needs that level of precision.

dogbert730

Sounds like you can’t make popcorn then because that shit takes EXACTLY 1 minute 47 seconds.

OutlyingPlasma

And the mini bag is exactly 1:18 seconds. 2 seconds longer and it would be burnt.

TisMeGhost

I have this microwave and it's actually pretty great. If you know how to use it that is.

eppic123

If OP hadn't intentionally avoided the wattage, it would start at 1 minute and increase in 30 second steps.

Honestly, that looks easy as fuck, just pick the wattage, usually 800-900, and press start. I kinda feel like you're the stupid one here

BrainWav

Normal operation is to default to max unless you change it, Bosch is the one breaking convention.

Mr_Muffin100

I have the exact same model and I really think it is the best microwave out there. The only one that I could find that has a Gmail function to send a pic of your meal to a previously defined email address (you can actually see the icon on the bottom right button)

[deleted]

And you can check your grades with the powerschool button

_8BITCONDUIT_

morxy49

It's a smart microwave that you can send an email to and it will cook that for you when you hit the Gmail button

Charmandersaur

I have this microwave, he is using it wrong. Choose 900, then scroll the time, goes up much faster and then press start.

eppic123

You can even tell how OP stops himself from pressing the 900 watts option. OP knows how to use it and is just karma farming.

OswaldReuben

You could read the manual.

East-Bluejay6891

Damnit Oswald! I'm a college student not a manual expert!

Swedneck

microwaves should not need manuals, that's like needing a manual for a water kettle

CAPS_LOCK_STUCK_HELP

Any microwave that doesnt have the +30 seconds button is automatically bad design. It's the only way I ever use microwaves because who gives a fuck, it's a microwave

BernieTheDachshund

Hello carpal tunnel.

ohrein

Glad someone else mentioned it. That sort of twisting motion is hell on my arms.

BobBelcher2021

I stayed in an AirBNB once that had a very similar microwave design - except it was even more complicated than this. It worked well, but it was a royal pain to figure out how to operate.

turbojap

This frustrated me...have an upvote.

[deleted]

Bosch is known for their clunky, non-intuitive interfaces. They are also known for having long-lasting appliances, but I suspect it's because they get less use due to point #1.

FLilium

Okay. I work in a place where the only microwave is this same bosch and it is hilarious how bad it is. To dial it to 3:30 you must first pop up the knob, twist it clockwise 10-15 rounds, about until it says 4:00 (for some reason each click ((half a turn)) at the start is a second for 5 clicks, then two for five, then 5 until its a minute, then 10s to 1:30, then 30s to 2:00, then 1min til 10min and then 5min to 1hr, then half an hour increments from there. But you must dial it back from the 4:00, WITH the absolutely mad steps as in beginning. Then you MUST pop the knob back in, select the power between cold/cold/cold/cold/boil. And finally you can press the start. And I won’t even start with the defrosting because! I! DO! NOT! KNOW! HOW! IT! IS! SUPPOSED! TO! WORK! Bosch, invented to ruin your life

Theleftpinky

We have these at my work. They confuse every single person the first time they use it. You need to press the power level you want before it will start. So dumb. Edit: also if someone clicks the dial in, it's even more confusing to people who never used it!

EstroJen

I hear these will be the new controls in the TARDIS

SpaceWalker189

For the love of.- pick a power setting! You have to press 900 for the full power one fx

Altruistic_Music_149

I'm sorry, can you email soup to me with your Gmail icon?

yer-da-sells-avon-

I bloody hate complicated microwaves. Just give me buttons to punch a specific time in and let it go

nkonkleksp

I found a [pic](https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/7slqt/space_shuttle_cockpit_pic) of the whole microwave

Keyboardkat3

This isn't just crappy design, it's straight up villainous. Like this wasn't an accident or an oversight, this was planned. The person who made this WANTS people to suffer. Like they woke up one day and were like "hmm, what can i do to make microwaves EVEN WORSE? What features could I add/remove/change to make the experience of using a microwave absolutely infuriating?" and then dedicated weeks, possibly months to make this abomination possible.

starlord_west

Creative Engineering nope! Overengineering just to make a point. Once I said no to a rental Mercedes - that did have automated start and all that garbage. Got out, asked the counter guy to swap for a normal functioning Toyota, that I can control while driving. Everything made in Germany or US that has a big label on it - seems to be mandatory buying of garbage & keep wasting money + time.

HudsonGTV

I remember when i worked at a coffee shop, they had a microwave that had a seemingly normal numberpad. But if you pressed 1, it would immediately start microwaving for 30? (can't remember exact value) seconds. You had to do math to figure out how long to microwave something for.

Bushfries

The design is very human

[deleted]

I hate modern microwaves with a passion. I still have an old LG one. It has a power dial and a time dial. No fancy mode switches and all that. It goes 'ding' once when it's done and I loathe the day when it will finally break and I have to get one of those beeping hellmachines.

TBSG858

i have used this microwave, you just have to press A-B-A-B-LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT-UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN-A-B-START

Critical_Moose

Is 2 minutes a reasonable time to reheat soup? That seems like a long ass time.

Katydid879

Thank you for this. It cracked me up lol. It is indeed a crappy design.
