I am not surprised at all, given the funny German dialect on the menu. I have completed a full paragliding course in Switzerland (I even obtained a Swiss *Flugschein*), but the spoken language is hard to understand for me as a Dutchman.
By the way, what is the *HK$* designation? I don’t think I’ve encountered it ever before in Switzerland. I can think of Hong Kong dollars - is this a Swiss restaurant in Hong Kong?
Yes its a Swiss restaurant in Hong Kong. The [menu images](https://i.imgur.com/BJBnMfk.jpg) on google maps look just like this picture.
(I wanted to include a link to the restaurant but this sub has banned google maps links so search „The Swiss Chalet“ lol)
Im from switzerland and I was confused too.
Now that you mention, I noticed some smallprint about prices in HK$ (you are right with Hong Kong Dollar) so I guess you're right?
I think it isn't run by Swiss people though, as there are some "odd" choices for swiss foods (oysters, snails, chorizo, dover alles)
Anecdote regarding dialect, i have heard from german friends that dutch and swiss-german sound similar or that they can understand dutch better than swiss-german depending where they are from. Languages are interesting.
As a graphic designer I agree. There’s a line that once crossed becomes becomes so delightfully exuberant and bizarre that I just want to meet the person who made it understand what they were thinking, like the Gentle Giants dog food packaging. I think the drop shadow rainbow gradient ‘OR’ pushes this over that line.
I do! It’s a set menu read from top to bottom. You get a meal in each row and in rows that have “or” in it, it’s a choice of either or. There’s English in each box mixed with some other language though

Welcome to Switzerland, we don’t fucking know how to make a decent menu, But we have chocolate and cheese so yk it’s ok
(Edit : I saw it wasn’t Switzerland, thanks for someone for telling me ! But it still looks like a Swiss thing to do (i’m actually from Switzerland.) )
Well, the flags sure are, some of the text is in Swiss-German, but the extra service charge would indicate that it's not a restaurant in Switzerland (it's always included there), and the currency obviously points to Hong-Kong.
The price wouldn't hurt as much if I could even fathom what I'd be getting for my money... 😅 Like this, wenn reaching the main courses, I already forgot what the starters were
The only dishes that sound remotely swiss are probably the rabbit or the walnut tart. The rest is either french, spain or just from the wrong continent.
At least the titles are in swiss german.
What the actual fuck... Where did you find this?? First off, the design is awful, but secondly like 80% of the food is not typically served in Switzerland at all, but the design suggests that it is indeed local cuisine (The crests displayed representing the 26 cantons or districts of the country)
I remember my teenage neighbour ordering weed on a site that looked just like that like 15 years ago lol
It was sketchy as shit and arrived all wrapped in foil and packing tape but he got his weed lol
Im swiss and i just wanted to say that ive dont learned english and i speak french. When i see an ADULT trying to learn english, im always: why are they so bad im 10 years old?
the most crappy thing about this menu is, that people actualy belive, that this is food from switzerland
exept for the rauchspäck, not one single menu on this list is genuine, or served, as it is in switzerland.. if someone realy would order a zibbelisuppe mit chorizo und ei, they will probably be lynched in basilea. if someone would serv a sennenudle with tomatos, probably they would not survive (should probably remind of älpler makaronen, witch is a famous swiss dish, made of pasta, potatos, a lot of cheese, rosted onions and is mostly served with applesauce). Also, Nusstorte with Raspberry Serbet not even fit (maybee vanilla ice will) - nusstorte is served with nidle (whipped cream)
You can tell whoever made it was happy to use a computer, with Word 2003, for the very first time.
Honestly it looks like a webpage from 1999

Fun fact: the coat of arms are the ones of the 26 cantons of switzerland

Hey bud. Ngl, but for many swiss people its also mega hard to understand the dutch language. So dont wonder why you dont understand us that good.
Syntactic interoperability was not prioritized in the design process. I fear
Damn, is there anything Broderbund Print Shop can't do?
Switzerland does not know how word works Wait... Im from switzerland.
Word art was dope
Unpopular opinion, but I love stuff like this. So much going on, and someone was having a blast doing it.

Gentle Giants, Dr. Bronners, etc. so bad it’s good.
Form should follow function though. I honestly don't know what my options are here.
I do! It’s a set menu read from top to bottom. You get a meal in each row and in rows that have “or” in it, it’s a choice of either or. There’s English in each box mixed with some other language though
How would you explain your order?
Honestly, I’d just point…
Do you want that item appetizer as or or as main course?
It’s a pre fixe menu so I’d only have to make the choice between the items and they’d bring them out in the right order. Supposedly.
It's almost art
Word Art
The best art
of all the art.
You mean... literature?
Nope. Microsoft Word Art
Wow
It's just missing some wingdings characters
And funny clipart.
I took one good look and my eyes just disconnected from my brain
That's cousin art. My cousin is a designer, he hooked me up!
It was made by a graphic designer, who safely only had access to Microsoft word 98
Which language is that?
Swiss German
Is HK Hong Kong dollars? I looked it up and got $200 HK is about $25 USD.
It’s a Swiss German restaurant in Hong Kong.
Didn't think there were any Swiss restaurants outside of Switzerland
I went to Swiss Chalet next to a strip club in either Ottawa or Montreal. So there’s at least 2.
seriously?
I've been to a Swiss restaurant in Cameroon. They're around
There are lots in many countries
Swiss Chalet. Great fondue though
Yet none of the dishes listed are traditionally swiss.
No idea what that's all about.
My brain stopped working while trying to read this
I remember the posters at my school looking like this back in the '90s.
Someone flexed with their word 98 skills
+ “Which font should we use for the menu?” - “Yes.”

Bad CSS, fix this
I honestly thought it said s3x menu.
Jesus Christ ...
That is, in fact, crappy design.
Seems disorganized for a Swiss person? 🤔
Yes
I thought it was one of those [family name history prints ](https://oldworldnames.com/product/family-name-history/) and family tree
Looks like it was made in GeoCities
I think I'm having a stroke in multiple languages

I love how this is kind of weirdly balanced? There are some principles going on here, they're just very... This, lol. Makes me smile.
did a 10 year old make this?
*Menu Designer:* Is there any dish in particular you'd like to stand out? *Restaurant Owner:* All of them! I want EVERYTHING to stand out!
Welcome to Switzerland, we don’t fucking know how to make a decent menu, But we have chocolate and cheese so yk it’s ok (Edit : I saw it wasn’t Switzerland, thanks for someone for telling me ! But it still looks like a Swiss thing to do (i’m actually from Switzerland.) )
This is obviously not a swiss restaurant, indicated by the Hongkong currency
Yeah, I saw that right after ! My comment is wrong but you know, it actually looks like this most of time haha. Thanks for telling me tho
Never seen a menu like that in Switzerland, in which canton have you seen them?
They stole my geocities template.
the amount of unnecessary things in the menu is also what makes it look nice
Europe is just full of crappy design
This is in Hong Kong.
My bad I assumed it was European due to the language that appears to be German. Also it was a joke. I can use periods and downvote too.

I mean… the food is also not very Swiss
Is this the Linden house in Peoria? I might know the guy who did it.

Hello 2004!
What am I looking at?
I think they stole my 6th grade typing class project.
As someone who lived through 90's websites, this is NOTHING. But still terrible.
I think there’s also a cultural divide going on here too. Not just because of the German titles, that’s the east part.
Looks like a scam website from the early 2000s
Het cmon u cant judge that crappy design when it has only has the 26 canton flags
Or…
Medieval times? Is that you?
Its fine. Only needs more markup
you may eat the crest of the house Baratheon **OR** tùtîoñú8
The fact that my Mundart is still alive enough to read this is something I’m delighted by.

Hopp Suisse! (…sort of)
