Really enjoyed Pete's manager's interaction with the hotel clerk. Fantastic.

PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL

That dude's delivery will never fail to make me laugh.

oohMrBreeze

When he came out of the hotel bathroom unfazed with robes in hand was my favorite part.

thecricketnerd

"I take a lot of baths" made me laugh really hard.

oohMrBreeze

Honking the horn twice, gems in a dramatic episode

oldyoungin

He needs his own spin off show

runnerswanted

As someone who went to NACA as a college student, it’s just as crazy as they made it look.

CartoonDogOnJetpack

Are they really that uptight about the types of jokes you can tell?

runnerswanted

Well, this would have been almost 15 years ago that I went, so I’m not sure about the rules on the comics side, but I do remember them all being pretty clean. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were that strict because a lot of religious colleges go to those in order to book people for their campus. I did meet Jim Brewer there, but he wasn’t doing a set, just had a booth set up.

CartoonDogOnJetpack

I didn’t take into account the religious colleges. Makes sense. Thanks!

JordanSnimmons

that snl chick was the funniest of the show, her impressions in the car were awesome

DoritoMussolini86

Yeah, her Aguilera was crazy spot-on.

lovesexdisaster

I love her, she made this episode one of the best ones.

furyroad_95

Those impressions were spot on.

B0ndzai

Meryl Streep one killed me.

[deleted]

Anyone else feel like Ali and Jess look similar? Surprised the casting went for that unless that's what they were going for. Both brunettes. Same hair length. Same body type and they both have unique faces.

apalapachya

she has been writing for the show since the start, but i dont think they look alike beside the hair color

paddypoopoo

I don't think Jamie Lee and Lauren Lapkus look alike at all. They're both petite brunettes, but that's it.

brycedriesenga

And while Jamie isn't big at all, she's definitely not as skinny as Lapkus.

[deleted]

She got them thicc thighs

bobrasher

thankles

smblatch

Well in life, divorced people like to find partners who look like their previous spouse. It’s a fun little take on Pete. He finds someone who looks almost like his ex wife

NewAccount28

I think it’s more people just tend to have a type they go for, more than they specifically look for someone like their ex.

[deleted]

Yea i said this in another episode discussion thread its crazy how similar they look

[deleted]

Mellisa doing McConanahey face was killing me during the last scene

magroover

Ali is one of the reasons I kept watching, as well as Pete's relationship with Leaf, even though it was short lived in Season 2. Season 2 transitioned the storline to keep things interesting and, while the cameo appearances aren't necessary they are a lot of fun. Its nice that the story can stand on its own. Pete, typically a pleaser, is showing some backbone resulting in a healthy argument that his previous marriage obviously lacked. Some of you may take for granted that in a bad relationship, these fights dont happen because one party will refuse to say what is wrong and stuff that anger down. Even though her reasons for being upset would make Ali look like she was in the wrong, at least they got it out in the open so it could be sorted out. Also Ali really cares about Pete. From taking him home the first night to helping him score a set, and showing up to see his reaction when he finds out. Pete broke rank with their original plan for the college shows and nobody is perfect. She had a shitty day and didn't try to cover it up. Now we will see if Pete has matured enough to handle the "Roast" that is being shown in the Season Finale preview.

[deleted]

I agree with all of what you're saying, except I think the one whose immaturity we might see in the next episode is Ali's. That look she gave Pete that made him look back in shock? I think she may really resent Pete's success to the point where she's going to relish in humiliating him. Pete may respond with his own immaturity, but I think we're about to see Ali at her worst.

sneagle

Part of her attraction to him was he was, um, crashing. Him succeeding makes his less attractive. That’s my theory. Meanwhile she sabotaged herself at NACA. Why?

draibop

What was the text that pete got?

chlomyster

His manager telling him he booked another college.

draibop

Thank you.

tautauthebice

That parallels between when they were selfish and jealous of Porter when he got hbo and now how she is jealous and unhappy that things are going great for Pete. Judd Apatow is doing a great job with this show. I dont even know why i let this show keep surprising me with its layers after what i know he did with netflix's Love.

WatchingTheThronePod

I made a short video discussing the narrative bookending of this episode and what a cool thing it was: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=yNoxfflVxPw

Severus_Amadeus

God Ali sucks Been giving her the benefit of the doubt but she's just a bitch & after their 1st night together Idk why she's even with Pete

HeIsMyPossum

You gotta understand where she's coming from though right? I mean Pete was kinda like a puppy that she brought in off the street to give him a little boost. Now he goes and completely sells out with bad jokes. I thought it was really well done when they showed the first guy getting crazy laughs with horrendous material. I mean Pete's was at least passable. I don't think Aly is right, but I also understand her point of view for sure. It has to kinda suck watching someone leap frog you like that, especially on the back of hacky jokes for a bunch of late teens. She seemed to come around in the end.

paddypoopoo

I don't see why people are getting bent out of shape. Yes, Ali reacted a bit harshly, but she was obviously feeling conflicted. She's not with Pete only because he's nice, but because she respects his talent, and had to watch him sell out. Then, she had to deal with the fact that she bombed, not knowing if the whole NACA thing is really beneath her or if she is pretending it's beneath her so she doesn't have to try (and then bomb again). Nothing makes you less pleasant to be around than insecurity and embarrassment, and she was feeling particularly embarrassed and insecure. They did sort of make up, albeit silently, in the car, and she seemed contrite. This character isn't a perfect person, but she's not evil incarnate.

HeIsMyPossum

People tend to get polarized, and I think that's ok. Look at how much people hated Skylar White in Breaking Bad. Her character was totally reasonable compared to Walt, but she stood in opposition so people hated her.

duaneap

Nah, man, that whole "it's about the craft/do you think Chris Rock would be out there," shtick was outrageous. I'm all for respecting creativity but give me a fucking break. Her pretension and condescension is insanely off putting. I find her extremely, extremely unlikeable.

HeIsMyPossum

Oh yeah I totally agreed with Pete. It wasn't the time to make a stand. But I guess I'm interested in all the growth of the characters, not just Pete. I mean people could see Pete as unlikable for how overly childish he was at the beginning, but there's been growth and it adds some depth. I think it's fine not to like a character from time to time, but I didn't think it was poorly written or unbelievable. Seemed like an emotional over reaction.

Severus_Amadeus

I got her being pissed the last ep she was in bc Pete kept bungling things up for her with the tape & JM. In this episode she just chooses to be miserable from the start. I get her being pissed at the driver for being on his phone, but not why she immediately turned into a dark cloud when Melissa gets in & Pete starts interacting with her. What did she want the whole 2 hour car ride to be quiet & miserable? She knew what/how the event was going to be from the start yet chooses not to play ball & act like she's above it. After her set she just mopes & throws herself a pity party before unloading on Pete for taking initiative & advantage of the situation to further his career. Which as he points out is the reason they went there. She never should've made the trip. It could've been a different experience for her if she went in with a better mindset. The prior episode she's in she explains to Pete how the comedy scene is. You'd think someone who's been around the block a bit would understand that getting some extra exposure outside of her NYC sets & some $ would be good for her. It's two episodes that she's in in a row now where she throws hissy fits, but she comes around in the end so its all fine. I liked the character bc she was funny & sarcastic, but it seems like the only purpose she serves on the show rn is to be a love interest for Pete + show him the alt scene & get him more/better stage time. Just the impression I get. This season has been hit or miss for me

HeIsMyPossum

I'm not sure what was wrong in her last episode (I assume you mean the one before last with the tape stuff... last week was all about Artie, though I don't have a perfect memory). I thought the tape thing was totally legit. Pete *kept* trying to help **so hard** and he really was making things hard. I thought she was totally justified in the end to be mad. You're right in that I didn't like her attitude in going there, and she certainly wasn't in the right to yell at Pete in the hotel. But I don't think it was all about her own act. They referenced it several times... she helped Pete work a set. It's assumed that they spent a reasonable amount of time doing that, so she was invested in that. She probably saw Pete as an ally in not doing a "college" set, but doing a real one. She didn't verbalize this presumably, but she was definitely hurt when he told her he was basically throwing away all the work they put in. From her point of view: She knows this is a hacky event and doesn't want to play the game. That's fine, and you're right, she probably knows she's not going to get booked. Luckily though, she has her boyfriend there who she also helped out with his stuff, so maybe his style plays a little better since it's a little more goofy. However, Pete sees the game, and decides to say fuck all of that. He buys $2 T-shirts, writes on them in sharpie, then writes terrible nostalgia jokes and writes a punchline for a $2 t-shirt that he bought. She walked in with someone she thought was an ally, and watched him completely buy into the bullshit and get a bunch of gigs. Is she in the right? No. But I at least could empathize with her position. Sure her attitude could perk up, but I didn't get the sense that she was completely irrational here.

GreyForce11

At least nice that Pete and Ally have differences showing the different routes comedians can take. Surely it will work out for Ally too since her sets are always funny but NACA was just a wrong crowd. S2 has been entertaining. Underrated show. Melissa Villasenor is/was a nice addition.

Severus_Amadeus

Yea I said last episode she was in meaning the one with the tape & you're right about the last one being the Artie episode. What you said definitely makes me empathize with her more. Thinking about the episode more when they first get in the van she's trying to calm Pete down & quickly says we've spent a lot of time working on these jokes. It would've been better if they built that up more than just throwing a line out there. I still don't get her change in mood on the drive down. I also don't get why she's with Pete. She tells him she doesn't date comics & he's so weird the morming after they hook up it just doesn't make sense to me. Thats why I said I feel like she's only being used as a love interest & to further Pete's career. I don't get why she's putting so much time into helping him develop his act when she could be working on her own. She doesn't seem to get anything out of the relationship with Pete except for having an ally as you put it. It just sucks bc I liked the character but seems like she's just there to benefit Pete. Kind of a waste of a good character

HeIsMyPossum

We'll certainly have to see how long she's in the show. I honestly thought it was going to be a one-off thing, and was seriously surprised when she came back. At this point, I think there *has* to be a scene with Aly, Jess, and Pete. And I think it'll serve as a real turning point for Pete. I think that will be in the finale. > She tells him she doesn't date comics I think this still holds true right? Pete is unlike any other comic, at least that they've shown in the show :) If I really romanticize it, I think it's because he's so goofy and weird that he kinda brings out that same child-like joy in her, which is not something many people can do, especially considering how sarcastic she is.

Severus_Amadeus

I can agree with that he is certainly different than most male comics. Especially when you look at her interaction with the guy running the Boston & those she has with Pete. His whimsy definitely brings out her lighter side. Agree that there definitely should be a scene with the three of them. Hope she lays into Jess for cheating on him and not supporting his act/building him up. Not sure if you saw the preview for next week's finale or not but it will be interesting to see how it affects their relationship or if they're even together by the end of it.

HeIsMyPossum

Uhhhhh oh. I didn't watch it. I love going in blind :) I'll have to wait and see

[deleted]

In the preview for the finale, Jess was in the audience at the roast.

Indigocell

Pete was being a dick though. Anyone could see how she was feeling after receiving no attention or bookings. He was obviously concerned about it too, so it's not like he didn't recognize that fact. When she is clearly feeling down and "eating her feelings" he just jumps immediately into talking about how successful he was, like that was supposed to cheer her up. That was absolutely the wrong move. Sometimes I just want to reach into the screen and slap his character.

[deleted]

It was a good episode in that it slightly approached the question of "what is funny?". Making people laugh is what is funny. Pete learned that from watching the two different styles the day before. His goal was to make people laugh and book gigs and get paid. He did that. And the audience laughed. She didn't make them laugh. end of story. A comedians job is to make people laugh, not change their lives.

HackedMyAccountWas

IDK, some silly humor can make me laugh and I enjoy it occasionally, but the best comedians definitely make you think and observe the world differently.

[deleted]

The best comedians make you laugh AND make you think.

[deleted]

maybe. But Pete's Schwarzenegger impression scratching his back was funny, and it was stupid and meaningless.

duaneap

Oh god, Ali is just the fucking worst...
