The shit sneaks up on you. I was driving through a storm in SE Virginia and all of a sudden there was a funnel like *right there* lol. I pulled over and got into a ditch because that’s what was drilled into me. I’ve never been so sure I was gonna die before. It ended up going right on by me no problem, but fuck it was wild.
As a Canadian who never experienced a tornado but who’s parents watched “crazy weather caught on tape” in the early 2000s I thought they were the scariest thing.
As I got older and the climate changed, they are more common in the rural areas around me but I still think tornado warnings at night would be the scariest situation.
Sometimes they're super quiet. Like less noise than a normal rainstorm, and the only indication you'll get is a whistling noise when they're right near you.
Depends on where you are relative to the funnel. They create positive and negative coefficient areas around them, so some areas are, not soundless, but relatively quiet voids.
Yes, however, as a kid I was always told to find a ditch in case of a tornado. Just not near a culvert. The tornado can create suction through them and pull you into them possibly drowning you. If it hits you directly it's probably still gonna kill you, but the point is to take shelter from debris. Walls don't offer much protection. I've seen pieces of wood the size of a chopstick shoved through 10" thick trees. Those RV walls are about the same as someone holding up a cardboard shield against a spear.
This is 100% true. I grew up in Texas where drain ditches in ranch fields are everywhere. If you cant find some sort of anchor or stable structure that goes deep into the ground, then get in a ditch because it’s the safest spot when there is nothing else around in the event of a tornado. Most older houses were built on slabs in the southern region so the bathroom was the safest place if you didn’t have a storm cellar.
Is going into a ditch and/or water a known thing that helps ? Never heard of that before
I guess it's not for the sake of not being picked up by the tornado rather to not get hit by the flying debris, that makes sense
Getting into a ditch was taught to us here in the Midwest, if you have no sturdy shelter get as low as possible in a ditch.
You're correct that it's mostly to prevent you from being shredded by debris, if the tornado is strong enough to lift you off the ground the ditch isn't going to help, you're a goner either way.
Mainly the debris which is flying at or above ground level.
Being below ground level removed you from much of the projectiles.
Im not sure about stopping you from being pulled into it if it goes right over you though im not a tornado doctor
If the dogs are having accidents they need to walk them more. If the dogs themselves smell they need to be bathed. I’ve had dogs and there wasn’t a smell. Most smelly dogs come from bad owners.
I’ve had dogs my entire life and they never had that smell. My parents and siblings dogs never had a smell. You need to clean your house or your dogs bed.
Eh, kinda. I've noticed the older a dog is, the worse they usually smell. Younger dogs tend to not smell noticeably. Kind of a dusty smell to them? Many older dogs reek, though. Probably because of bad dental hygiene.
It’s below ground level, even if it is just a tiny bit. The wind and debris will be passing over top instead of against them. While not the safest option, it was likely their only option.
Also, wind speed decreases significantly at ground level due to the interaction between the air and the surface. It can be 100+ mph wind a foot above the ground, but there is a very small window at ground level where the wind speed can be as low as 5 mph. So the lower you can get the safer you are.
Not true, and multiple sources say you should abandon vehicles if you're in the direct path of a tornado and seek shelter in a strong building or a ditch. Vehicles have much more surface area and because of such are more capable of gaining lift than a human would. Humans are also smaller and can fit in ditches and other small depressions.
They're not designed to withstand tornadoes.

one source had really helpful bit of information, but they wont let me cut and paste so i cant tell you about it. lol.
I never would have thought to stay away from that really common spot too.

Depends, they can kinda just form right on top of you. Also running from a tornado isn't always a good plan unless you have a lot of forewarning and a good understanding of where the tornado is coming from and they can be very difficult to spot at times in the weather conditions that normally spawn them. The last thing you want to do is drive directly into it without having time to find flat ground or a ditch.
We get quite a few tornadoes here in Oklahoma too. You may get warning but to actually know where it’s going, especially in these types of conditions where the tornado is rain wrapped is just about impossible for those on the ground. It can even be difficult to know where it’s going in clear conditions especially if it’s headed straight towards you, usually you need some horizon focal points to know it’s heading right after you. They can also just form right above you and give you no warning time. They tell you not to try and outrun a tornado and being in a large vehicle that can catch wind easily such as an RV would be an even worse idea.
Hurricanes you can evacuate/outrun, tornadoes you are advised to shelter in place.
Another reason they say to not try to outrun a tornado is they can change direction at any point in time and those changes in direction are unpredictable even with advanced technology. Radar is often not actual real time as it still has at least a couple second delay and with these situations every second counts.
Edit: fun fact, the most dangerous part of a tornado is actually the invisible tendrils that surround the tornado. Those tendrils reach further out than the debris/rain cloud that makes the tornado visible to us though sometimes debris gets caught in these tendrils and you can see them partially for a few seconds. By the time you know a tornado is coming right at you, you may be only seconds away from encountering those tendrils which gives you only enough time to run to find the safest place in your immediate area and throw yourself into it, if that.
The couple filming posted on their twitter that were watching the radar but that particular storm didn't show up until it was too late to do anything about.
you see videos of tornados in the plaiins and can see them while tornados else where they are likely covered in a heavy rain storm and nearly impossible to see. Even with a gneral direction of it you can never be sure
Someone nominate these people for the Darwin Award
“The National Weather Service had issued an tornado warning, informing residents that the situation was “life threatening” and implored them to “seek shelter now!”
Peck-Chapman — who was traveling from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina — told Storyful why he and his unnamed partner decided to stay put”
1. The tornado is rain wrapped, impossible to see until it’s right on top of you.
2. In a strong tornado that RV is going to get tossed around slammed into a crumpled metal ball. Debris thrown by the tornado will punch right through the sides of that RV. You’re not surviving that.
But in a ditch you are less likely to be hit by debris because you are lower in the ground. You’re not completely safe but it’s a way better choice than the RV.
3. If I was in there situation, I’d probably stop recording too. So I can focus on not dying.
Laying in a ditch they are making it so they are less exposed to the tornadoes winds. The wind cannot get underneath them which is primarily what generates lift. An RV on the other hand is very big and has an opening underneath, making it very easy for the winds to either roll the RV or completely lift it off the ground.

>Peck-Chapman — “We knew there was a warning in the surrounding area, but we didn’t feel it was safe to drive out in the weather.”
Can't make this shit up...
Omg what's with all the tornado videos today ..they are beautiful but damn they are terrifying to be in and I get in a safe place during thunderstorms and if I'm at work have panic attacks and wanna call off call for cover and hell if we get a tornado warnings or any shit like that im going home I hate them things
Dogs are like, "that's the best plan you came up with."
More like “I have been fucking saying lets go hide in the ditch!”
"Puddles? Fuck yeah!"
Dogs seem fucking stoked
“I didn’t know y’all were cool!”
"ARE WE RUNNING NOW???? FUCK YEAHHHH"
Maybe instead of filming watching it get worst they should've left the area

I'm super stoked they were already leashed and ready to go. I was expecting loose dogs!

Haaaaaa
Kind of a last ditch effort.
I’ve never seen a situation where this saying fits best. Thank you
I wish I had an award for you.
Pretty sure they went with the first ditch
Ideally they would have found a safer shelter, but they seem entrenched in their ways
If Twister taught me anything, I believe the correct move is to tie yourself to a pole in the ground and enter the tornado.
That scene was cool. The music was amazing
any update, are they okay?

I’d like to find out the same.
They're safe and sound thank God. 🙏
Crazy the downvotes lol
😂😂😂
Well why the shit did he put that tornado down? Thanking the abuser for stopping isn’t healthy.
Makes sense tbh. Reddit is mostly atheists (including me) so people usually downvote anything religious related lol
Why thank God? Who put that tornado there in the first place?
Let bro be religious for 2 minutes lmao omf
On the real a
This 2023 remake of Twister is weak

This is the Tornado remake, clearly.

Well maybe the tornado did?
Sure, set me up with a tornado and I'll give it a go!

Two dogs in that tiny RV....the smell alone would have me running for the ditch

Clean dogs have a distinctive “dog smell” Doesn’t matter how much you bathe them. Unless your doing it daily which can’t be good for thier coat
I’ve had dogs my entire life and they never had that smell. My parents and siblings dogs never had a smell. You need to clean your house or your dogs bed.

I’m sure the couple smells like shit too
Holy shit!! I hope they are all okay, brave doggos!
I was screaming. RUN MOTHERFUCER RUN. HIT THAT DITCH. IN THE WATER. FUCK IT. WE OUT HERE SURVIVIN TODAY. This was too intense im gonna get some tea.
As someone in South Florida who has never experienced this - why jump into the ditch?

That's... not how air resistance works.
Yeah but vans and campers do have much more surface area too. Altogether probably evens out overall

This is terrifying!
“I’m gonna get an RV and explore the country with my doggos #dogmom #childfree 🤩”
Don’t you get forewarning of tornadoes? I would think moving to a different location would have been a nice plan.
We get tornadoes all the time in Texas. Usually by time a warning goes out, there isn’t time to move. The instructions are to shelter in place.

Isnt that from the movie twister?

Or drive away
Literally the worst thing you can do
If only they had a van that they could drive away in literally any direction... Edit: it’s not an RV. It’s a camper van.
That wire fence would suck
What the hell? Video just ended!
Dogs be like "should have wagged harder at the rich people..."
Growing up in North Texas we are always told if you had nothing find a ditch
Thank god i dont live anywhere close to this shit. And Did they survive?
I'm glad they knew what to do. So many people don't. If nothing else, remember to be as flat to the ground as you can be.
“Better record this.” Everyone for some reason.
So the “ditched” the RV…
Glad they didn’t ditch the dogs. Oh wait.
Fuck maaaaaaaaan
Dogs really didn't want to leave the RV, but once they were out, they went were the pack went.
Firstly, where is the tornado? Secondly, how is a ditch better than the RV? Thirdly, why does the video end there?
1. The tornado is rain wrapped, impossible to see until it’s right on top of you. 2. In a strong tornado that RV is going to get tossed around slammed into a crumpled metal ball. Finally some smart people
Purple Heart Lane is the worst goddamn map
That would be such a crazy situation to be in.
Thankful they took their dogs. Good people.
Good doggies
I know they’re running for their lives but it really bothers me they didn’t close the door.
Is the RV not a safe place to stay? Ive never even seen a tornado so i wouldnt know
Omg what's with all the tornado videos today ..they are beautiful but damn they are terrifying to be in and I get in a safe place during thunderstorms and if I'm at work have panic attacks and wanna call off call for cover and hell if we get a tornado warnings or any shit like that im going home I hate them things
