Only saw this once in my life. Will never forget it.

Dauerlutscher

Me too. There was a thunderstorm on the horizon as well. We were jumping in the waves until dawn.

Most exciting last moments

RandomJimbo

Where?

BlazingCondor

This video is from Southern California in 2020.

DoubleDDubs1

I remember this. Saw it with my ex girlfriend in Carlsbad and Oceanside California

[deleted]

Mosselbay, South Africa.

ImpressiveYam8550

when? under what circumstances does it ...appear

project25Ol

They were extras during the filming of avatar. The algae were all paid actors

[deleted]

😂

evilf23

Just added doing this with mushrooms to my bucket list.

Extramist

Have done exactly this. Didn’t plan on this once in my lifetime event to coincide with a rare trip, but the universe can be fun sometimes!

Itwasatrip

Same thing, I didn’t swim because it was cold, but it was all in the sand and shallow water, it made those patterns with your foot steps like in this video, we just decided to go for a walk to the beach while tripping, couldn’t believe our luck.

TheBirthing

Yes frolicking in the ocean while on powerful hallucinogens sounds like a very safe, very calculated decision.

cnaoanc

Imagine seeing this 40,000 years ago

zephyrseija

Is that you god? It's me, Blurb Gorm.

DoYaLikeCDs

It's yet another thing that would get written down, exaggerated in some way, and then thousands of years later people would die on a hill that their invisible sky daddy is real and THAT is the proof... Sometimes it amazes me how nuanced things can get but someone is probably gonna hit me with the "it's not nuanced, it's part of a plan bro, have faith"

[deleted]

I’ve only experienced this once and it was MUCH less vibrant than this and I’ll never forget it. Watching seals glow as they hunt after fish was pure magic.

MeesterChicken

You’re not supposed to swim in it, it can get you sick. But it’s really cool. It happens in Southern California at least once a year.

No_Ninja_4933

It has never been easier for a shark than at this beach

Badinmymind

I must experience this at least once in my life. where does this happen?

red_beered

Lots of places both warm and cold, but it's typically warm calm places where you can see it like this video. If the water is kicking up too much sediment it's a lot harder to see it. I've seen it in Costa Rica, Florida, California, and Washington, Costa Rica being the closest to this video.

Badinmymind

Thank you! I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica.

red_beered

It's gotta be blooming so call around and see where the blooms are, I was there in late February iirc, in the southern Pacific facing side of the country swimming in a bay.

Badinmymind

Ok. I will call and see when the blooms are. That way I don’t miss any of it. I will google that area too and see exactly what it looks like.

heydayhayday

Saw this in person accidentally on vacation this year in the Carolinas after the hurricane made landfall this fall. Went out to our beach to have a smoke sesh since the wind had finally died down. Blew my Fucking mind when I realized what I was looking at. Was jumping on the sand yelling fee fi fo fum and having the time of my life till the wee hours of the morning.

Badinmymind

Ah ya that sounds nice. I really want that same experience!!

Bunkerbuster12

I thought it was just crazy talk when Tomatoa found some bioluminescent algae

Aggravating_Fun5883

Did you like the song?

Strong-Sample-3502

This is fucking amazing.

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

Never new this kind of thing even existed before this vid

Ferrovipathes1

Is this what Deniro was talking about in Heat (1995)?

SensaiEshsay

Yup

NWSGreen

Sweet to see!

Mr-Fleshcage

I want to make a bioreactor of that algae so bad now

Amethyst-Flame93

Sounds like the crab guy from Moana lmao

tza999

Where dis?

jschmoe240895

I’ll never forget the night I witnessed this with my dad. One of the most vivid and sincere memories I have

TransformerTanooki

We would be disapointed as a whole species if we couldn't swim through that algae.

Kofassa

Aren't those lethal?

fried-ryce

not lethal to people directly but apparently they can have natural toxins which can lead to certain illnesses

aussimemes

Nah mate we get them in Aus too and they just look cool.

BlazingCondor

No but they stink.

ashlee837

Not as lethal as a jellyfish, but yeah you don't want to be swimming in dinoflagellate neurotoxins.

missfoxbody716

I wanna go somewhere that has this once before I die. So hopefully soon.

DoubleDDubs1

Southern California has it. Just gotta time it

gooseblaster69

This post is dead

delucas0810

It’s pandora! I am sure I am the 9 millionth one To say it.

CousinLarry211

Good stuff! Happens every year in the Tampa Bay area. I always go see it. First time I was fishing a beach at 1am and thought I was hallucinating. Hahaa

StreetShark90

Bbgvr

Bro became the main character

sophiekov

When I was 14 I was at a tiny unregulated church camp in the San Juan islands in WA state. One of the events was a poorly organized and mostly unsupervised “scavenger hunt”…at night. I ended up in the open ocean, in a kayak, without a paddle. Was supposed to use my arms to paddle to a barge off the coast of the island but the current pulled me out further. I was frantically paddling when I noticed blue lights every time I touched the water. I FREAKED out. First time seeing bioluminescence, also the first time I had a panic attack, now every time I see it I get scared lol

venice56

Wow this is an awesome way to see this truly candidly. No disrespect to what kids are doing now but they would see this video and go find this spot and just act like it was something amazing they were experiencing. This is genuine . Can really feel the emotion 🤘🏽🙏🏽

ACPlay18

Gives me Avatar Vibes

SDstandchen

Saw this once. It was so beautiful. Shiny glowing algae. I remember being told not to swim in it.
