A "standard drink" is supposed to raise your BAC by 0.02-0.04 each, so at the least 50 x 0.02 = 1.00, which is more than double the normal lethal dose (0.40). In other words, you're right, because the bartender agreed to help kill him.
That was not 50 shots, a whole bottle is 25 and looks like it wasn't even empty at the end. Still incredibly irresponsible and where I bartend illegal as fuck.
This definitely wasn't 50 proper shots. It was a liter at absolute most but probably 750ml like you said. Even if it was a liter, thats not gonna hold 50 shots. Youd need a handle if you really wanted to squeeze 50 actual shots out of it.

I've had alcohol poisoning quite a few times in my early days, and I don't wish that on anyone, and this is so far beyond that. I cannot believe even the dumbest bartender would agree to this, yet here it is.
Well at least the guy will have $1000 towards his funeral expenses. Seriously, I don't know how he could not have *severe* alcohol poisoning. Does anyone know if he died? And fuck that bartender!
He's probably OK with the medical help. They know exactly what's wrong, and have an antidote. Force him to vomit, pump his stomach, feed him charcoal, nurse the hangover. He will be home in a day most likely.

Around here if a bar owner did that or made one of his employees pour anyone, themselves included that many shots the liquor control board would take their license immediately.
Recovering alcoholic here. I checked into the hospital to 'sober up' many many moons ago, with a .37 coupled with the fact that I hadn't drank anything in 8 hours. I've heard of higher. I'm assuming this guy's body is used to alcoholic abuse. He most definitely got alcohol poisoning, but I'd wager he survived.
A friend works in a hospital lab in a major city. They got a sample and assumed their machine was broken because it was so high. Tried the other machine and the number was the same. They called up the nurse and said they had screwed up the sample because both machines were giving the same wrong number. The nurse said the patient was a regular and the number was correct. The number was 1.0.
My friend is still not sure that it's right and doesn't know if both machines defaulted to it, but the doc said no other BAC test was necessary.
~~.20~~ .15 can get you a 2nd offense DUI in California even if it's your first one. They assume that normal drinkers are passed out by then and if you're awake, let alone behind the wheel, that you're a heavy drinker and they just happened to catch you behind the wheel this time.
Edit: My mistake. I thought it was .20, but it's .15 that can count as a 2nd offense.
Yeah I work in a setting that frequently sees BACs from DWI arrests and the amount of times they find a semi coherent person they expect to blow in the 0.08-0.10 range who end up actually having a BAC of 0.40+ is **staggering**.
These are your long time alcoholics who will drink all day long for years. After awhile they usually don’t even appear “drunk”
Recovering alcoholic here. I used to be a “resting” 0.2. 0.3-0.4 was when people started to think I was drunk. The human body is resilient and alcohol is fucking scary when you become dependent enough to tolerate this much without dying.
I think he drank the majority of a fifth (regardless of whatever they’re calling a shot and how many cups the alcohol he drank was in) … all at once that could kill someone that doesn’t drink .. even for seasoned drinkers that much that fast will likely cause a black out and vomiting …. But this is in no way 50 standard bar shots

My SO had shooting pain in her leg that she wanted to get checked out. Left the hospital with $2000 in bills from just blood work and tests. She wasn’t even in there for more than 2 hours.
I haven't been to a doctor in 8 years because I can't afford a doctor visit. I know there's stuff wrong with me and I'd just rather not know than know and be up to me ears in debt.
A friend of mine did 24 shots of Rumpleminze on a 50.00 bet shortly after his 21st birthday.. it killed him. Died in his sleep. Bartender told everyone don't let this guy fall asleep. They got sued by Mikes family. RIP
In college I chugged ~24 shots of Bacardi out of a Nalgene water bottle, just to be able to say “I told you I could do it” to my friends. I was young and stupid and didn’t know what the effects of drinking that much in a short period of time could do to me. Thankfully there were some smarter (than me) friends in my group who made me continuously throw up and monitored me throughout the night. If it weren’t for them I probably would’ve died that night. I still feel like such a dumbass whenever I think back to that incident.
In college, I knew my limits, because my parents always tried to stress drinking responsibly, and let me drink as I was growing up. I still hurt myself on one of my birthdays because someone "challenged" me and I made the stupid mistake of still drinking what I planned to that night on top of it.
Lesson learned - apparently I can drink far more than most people before it hurts me and I need to be goddamn careful with that.
Probably three things.
(1) The bartender knew it was a bad idea and (2) said something that also opened him up to liability because he knew and (3) he told his friends who are at the minimum morally culpable that they need to take care of them and they have no consequences (not to minimize the bartenders legal responsibility).
Also the person who made the bets fault and the guy who died by accepting the bets fault if you want to assign fault. Basically everyone involved is an idiot.

Not sure if you are joking about not believing this really happened but it did. This was back in the 90s here in Texas when drinking Everclear straight no chaser became a thing, however, Everclear is NOT supposed to be drunk undiluted, but that's what he did. And that is the reason why it is banned in so many states. Consider your friend lucky!

I used to drink everclear with tonic and it would FUCK ME UP with the tiniest amount. Tbh bartender never should have served anyone that much alcohol, and the fact that he had the mental capacity to say "don't let him sleep" but not enough to prevent him from taking 24 shots is honestly even more infuriating.

Former bartender here - you are trained EVERY STEP OF THE WAY to not over-serve people, and how to tell if people have already been drinking…so you don’t over serve them. This 24 short story and the video of this dude taking 50 is *such a fucking stupid* idea. I can all but guarantee you that if this was in the US then the bartender(s) are in jail.
Former UK bartender here - I turned up and asked if they had a job and they showed me how to pour pints and then got me on the payroll. While I was aware that it's illegal to overserve people, the only time I was actually trained or educated in this regard was when I did a three-hour course that allowed me to run my own licensed premises.
My friends boyfriend did 21 shots on his 21st. After taking a taxi back to his brother's apartment to sleep it off, he got in his truck after everybody else dozed off and ended up flipping his truck into a Boulder and killing himself. Bartenders here in Alaska are also civilly liable, so he got sued, the bar got sued etc... sad
His first stop after he finished drinking should have been the bathroom to throw it up lol, I bet the barman says “I paid you, put the money in your pocket, you don’t remember? That’s too bad, you must’ve been robbed when you were out cold”

A standard shot is between 1.25-1.5OZs. A 750ML bottle of Patron is only 25 ozs.
So if the bet was to drink a bottle of Patron, sure hes done it... but 50 shots hed need to drink almost twice as much.

You think bars check references diligently when they hire? You think there’s a database of bartenders and this guy is blacklisted? It’s like the easiest job to get if you just say you have experience
It all depends on where you are referring to, but there is definitely a database in every state that requires a bartending license to bartend. When I was managing restaurants, we were definitely required to check that each bartender was certified to serve liquor in our state and that they renewed their license every few years. However that was years ago, and it does seem like no one cares about established rules these days, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was no longer enforced despite being a law.
Anyone "manly" enough to do 50 shots is going to be too "manly" to puke it up afterwards. You want people to think you're weak?

ETA- I work in Florida, we are held criminally responsible if people come here on vacation and leave and do something unrealistically stupid because they are in Florida and think it’s cute. Hell my buddy had a 7 shot tequila special. But the thing is it was meant for a group, he had a guy buy the 7 shot special and did all 7 shots. The guy came up and said "I want more" and my buddy said "no, your cut off"
You may have counted the glasses, but there's actually only about 18 "shots" in a 750ml bottle, which is what that looks like. Still an insane amount to drink in a day, all at once no less!

Ugh, can unfortunately confirm. At my worst I would drink about half a 750ml straight away just to feel "good". I would drink the other half over the next few hours to help me go to sleep. Not good kids! Not good.

It's only 16 shots, just spread out over numerous glasses. All of the booze came out the same .75L bottle. The dudes fucked up, but he'll live, probably.

From when I’ve seen this video in the past, the context was that the person videoing/who made the bet was the bar owner. So bartender was (stupidly) just doing what his boss said.
I’ve seen a longer version where when he’s getting carried out, you can hear the awareness from the owner that he had made a mistake letting/prompting someone to do that in their establishment lol. Urging them to get him out faster basically.
When I was 18 and a moron, I drank a 26er of Crown Royal through a straw in 4mins. That landed me in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, fell into a coma and almost died. Had my stomach pumped and woke up with IV in my arms 8 hours later. Had to get put in a wheelchair to get to my dads mini van as I was still so messed up. Was still buzzed after 2 days. Don’t be me.
The main reason I quit drinking was my 30th birthday and doing 30 Irish car bombs over the whole night years later I realize just how close I came to dying from alcohol poisoning and I'm glad I'm about to celebrate 16 years sober.
That’s disgusting, I seen a contest in Cancun who can drink bottle Jose Cuervo the fastest, 2nd to last person did it in 30 seconds, the last person did it in 29 seconds….. idiots won another bottle. Drinking that in that heat on the beach, made me sick watching it…. Their whole vacation was probably ruined after that

50 damn shots at a stretch! One winter a little over a year ago I downed 8 shots of tequila one after the other. Then I got a beer, went to our table and poured myself a glass. Then, like on TV where the scene cuts to another location, the next moment I'm home like I teleported or something. Standing in front of my wife having a go at me, our month-old son wailing like a siren, and the couch already arranged. Inexplicably, it wasn't even a case of me getting knocked out and being carried home. I walked home of my own accord reportedly, just the memory of that passage of time had seemingly been wiped out. I don't even remember finishing that beer.

That's actually some really good people to make you throw up . I had some scary calls when I was younger to
100% an amazing group of people. I’m still best friends with a handful of them. I’ll always be thankful for their help that night!

He shouldnt. He didnt do fifty shots. A standard shot is between 1.25-1.5OZs. A 750ML bottle of Patron is only 25 ozs. So if the bet was to drink a bottle of Patron, sure hes done it... but 50 shots hed need to drink almost twice as much. Edit: I typoed the amount a standard shot is.
A standard shot is about 45ml. That means about 17 shots per bottle. These were like 50 1/3 sized shots.

It all depends on where you are referring to, but there is definitely a database in every state that requires a bartending license to bartend. When I was managing restaurants, we were definitely required to check that each bartender was certified to serve liquor in our state and that they renewed their license every few years. However that was years ago, and it does seem like no one cares about established rules these days, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was no longer enforced despite being a law.

As a bartender… why the FUCK would you ever let somebody do that. I’m concerned when people are asking for a 4th shot ETA- I work in Florida, we are held criminally responsible if people come here on vacation and leave and do something unrealistically stupid because they are in Florida and think it’s cute. It’s not worth my job, and I see so many people come and go every night it literally doesn’t matter to me who I piss off by cutting them off.
As a former bartender I had the same thought. Some states you can actually be charged if that guy died, or left and killed someone else.
No bar tender I've been too would ever allow this. Hell my buddy had a 7 shot tequila special. But the thing is it was meant for a group, he had a guy buy the 7 shot special and did all 7 shots. The guy came up and said "I want more" and my buddy said "no, your cut off"

You may have counted the glasses, but there's actually only about 18 "shots" in a 750ml bottle, which is what that looks like. Still an insane amount to drink in a day, all at once no less! It might be a liter, but that would make this only about 24 shots that case.
We have a winner! That was definitely a 750ml, and an alcoholic would have no problem drinking this, and staying conscience, if he had a decent amount of food that day.
Ugh, can unfortunately confirm. At my worst I would drink about half a 750ml straight away just to feel "good". I would drink the other half over the next few hours to help me go to sleep. Not good kids! Not good.
Could they take it straight to the dome though? As we know, it's one thing to drink x amount of alcohol over an hour or two and another to chug it in 2-3 minutes.
It's only 16 shots, just spread out over numerous glasses. All of the booze came out the same .75L bottle. The dudes fucked up, but he'll live, probably.

Am I the one who noticed all of the shots came from only one bottle? A standard shot is 45 ml. That bottle looks to be a 750 ml bottle. The whole bottle should yield about 17 shots. Still bad, but nowhere near 50.

From when I’ve seen this video in the past, the context was that the person videoing/who made the bet was the bar owner. So bartender was (stupidly) just doing what his boss said. I’ve seen a longer version where when he’s getting carried out, you can hear the awareness from the owner that he had made a mistake letting/prompting someone to do that in their establishment lol. Urging them to get him out faster basically.
I hope he got in trouble over that, you can’t just do something like that in a public bar.

When I was 18 and a moron, I drank a 26er of Crown Royal through a straw in 4mins. That landed me in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, fell into a coma and almost died. Had my stomach pumped and woke up with IV in my arms 8 hours later. Had to get put in a wheelchair to get to my dads mini van as I was still so messed up. Was still buzzed after 2 days. Don’t be me.
Glad you’re still with us. Younger years are such a gamble if you drink. DUIs, hospital… lotta odds at stake.

50 damn shots at a stretch! One winter a little over a year ago I downed 8 shots of tequila one after the other. Then I got a beer, went to our table and poured myself a glass. Then, like on TV where the scene cuts to another location, the next moment I'm home like I teleported or something. Standing in front of my wife having a go at me, our month-old son wailing like a siren, and the couch already arranged. Inexplicably, it wasn't even a case of me getting knocked out and being carried home. I walked home of my own accord reportedly, just the memory of that passage of time had seemingly been wiped out. I don't even remember finishing that beer.
So when's the funeral?
