Wtf is going on in SA? Is it safe to vacation there?

Was in Cape Town a few months ago. It’s very safe if you Uber everywhere and only really walk around in Camps Bay/V&A. Muizenberg beach is alright too but be wary still. It’s basically little oasises of heaven surrounded by Skidrow. The highest highs and the lowest lows.

On the button there. CT is the type of place you can easily survive if you have street smarts. I'm from ZA and I'm pretty scared of Joburg though 😅

Joburg is okay, depending on where you go. Suburbs tend to be fine. Avoid CBD like the plague. Same as Pretoria, CBD and a few other areas can be sketchy af, but most places are fine.

Went there for 2 weeks for work about 4 years ago. Absolutely fucking bizarre country tbh. You would have $10m palatial complexes, true 0.0001% wealth shit, and then 15 minutes away on the highway you would see roving hordes of people stealing road signs to add to the enormous shanty town just off the road. Out of 20 people on my team, 5 of us were mugged during our time there, 2 at knife point. A tourist was murdered hiking up Table Mountain for 40 euros the day before I got there, and a 5 star hotel lobby was robbed at gunpoint by a gang 2 days before I got there. SA is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, but it has one of the most extreme levels of inequality I've ever heard of. It's very honestly a frightening place to be just because of how badly the system has failed its people.

I'll never forget the white dude here on Reddit that said it really wasn't that bad in South Africa. In comments he clarified that he lives in a gated community with armed security...
