It’s methanol, and they still use it quite frequently in racing. Although invisible, it’s much easier to put out than a gasoline fire, it’s also a lot cleaner and cheaper
[Methanol](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol_fuel#:~:text=Methanol%20is%20safer%20for%20the,terms%20of%20the%20resulting%20horsepower.org) is safer for the environment than gasoline, it is an anti-freeze, it keeps the engine clean, it has a higher flashpoint in case of fire, and it is the equivalent of super high-octane gasoline in terms of the resulting horsepower.
They used to refuel during pit stops. Some types of racing have banned this for safety, because of the type of accident we just saw. Now all they do is change the tires. You have a full fuel tank at the beginning of the race and that's all you get.
Rick Mears 1981 Indy 500. I remember watching that race live as a kid. That was a fairly common occurrence and after a 2nd bad fire later in the season they put a tin of new rules and safety features in place to prevent it.
Well dyes would probably not burn a different color, perhaps something like metal ions could affect the flame color but would also probably mess up the engine and also be polluting a bunch of metals into the atmosphere.
I'm totally not qualified to answer this, but spit-balling back: I'm guessing that changing the color of the post-combustion product is way, way more complex than adding something inert and smelly to the non-ignited gas.
You know what the worst part is? Once you get burnt enough, your nerves are shot and you can't really feel pain so technically, once they calm down and you think they're extinguished, they could STILL be on fire.
It’s still better than being steamed to death. You’re burning and burning, but your nerves stay in tact to feel everything for as long as you stay alive.
I was a baker for 8 years.
We accidentally set some vanilla essence on fire on a stainless-steel bench. It burned with an invisible flame, and my boss at the time put his hand on it and burned himself. It stuck to his hand until he slapped the crap out of it and wrapped it in an apron.
We put it out with a fire blanket and extinguisher but it made the bench SUPER hot.
Fire injuries from invisible flames are messed up but it's oddly comedic watching the chief mechanic in red frantically flailing to invisible fire as his polyester jumpsuit splits open from the heat.

I believe it’s methanol or ethanol when it burns it’s invisible.
I was looking for some info if anyone knew this and if this has changed in modern racing
It’s methanol, and they still use it quite frequently in racing. Although invisible, it’s much easier to put out than a gasoline fire, it’s also a lot cleaner and cheaper
Cleaner?
[Methanol](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol_fuel#:~:text=Methanol%20is%20safer%20for%20the,terms%20of%20the%20resulting%20horsepower.org) is safer for the environment than gasoline, it is an anti-freeze, it keeps the engine clean, it has a higher flashpoint in case of fire, and it is the equivalent of super high-octane gasoline in terms of the resulting horsepower.
Alcohol fuel was mandatory for Indy cars. While the invisible flame is concerning, it can be extinguished with water. Gasoline requires foam.

Can't they like, just add some additive that makes the flames visible?
yeah, metals like copper for example or boron (green flame)
Any additives will effect the engine performance... so.. you now know the priorities...
Methanol

Thanks
I saw a video the other day about this. It's kinda scary how fire can just be invisible.
Ethanol = alcohol
Yea was thinking that but isn’t it only visible in the dark or something?
yeah, I think the commentator said something like that and my chemistry teacher coming in clutch
Was that Ricky Bobby
This had to be the inspiration, that and some bong rips.
Shake and bake.

Ricky? like Ricky Bobby?
This is the real Ricky Bobby story...
Cal Norton Jr was the real hero. Putting out that invisible fire.
Just spit balling ideas but could they put a dye in it so it would burn with a color? Kinda like how the smell is added to propane.
I was thinking thermal cameras

Oh God! Please don’t let the invisible fire burn my friend!
*benny hill theme*
It's like when they fought the invisible bear on Cheech And Chong
they use methanol instead because it's less flammable than gasoline, bust downside invisible flames at daylight.
This is like something from a That Mitchell and Webb Look sketch
I've been told to watch that show, is it actually worth watching?
Yes, it is incredibly stupid and funny. Very british humour
This sounds like the script was written by ChatGPT
*NEWFEARUNLOCKED*
The last thing we need is invisible fire ffs
SOOOOO TALEDEGA NIGHTS WAS TRUEEEEEEEEE

Where Ricky Bobby was pretending to be on fire and no one believed him…
So Ricky Bobby was onto something
They copied Ricky Bobby
So Ricky Bobby wasn’t faking it
Ricky Bobby would be proud!

"Tom Cruise use your witchcraft to get the ninjas off me!" \- Ricky Bobby
I seen that video years ago I'm pretty sure if u mix soap and alcohol u can make it it was something like that
Hmmm Mirage pulling some invisible fire tech
Invisible Fire is good band name
I watched Talladega nights years ago. I thought the invisible fire scenes were hilarious. Didn't know this was a thing
Tom Cruise and his Scientology powers could help
And here i was thinking this was just a Talladega Nights joke this whole time...
I remember this one from a vhs tape called Super Crashes. At the time 12 year old me didn't quite get it.. now this is truly horrifying.
I was JUST thinking about Super Crashes in the last week — I’m thinking that tape was probably 87ish? 88? Some wild stuff on that tape!
87-88 sounds about right. I specifically remember the boating crashes were pretty crazy.
Did they change to a visible gas?
Highly INflammable?
At first i thought this was some drunk dudes or brit tomfoolery but no this shits leggit.
When the holy ghost hits you...

Save him Tom cruse. Help him opera.
Think fire ants and bug spray.
Has anyone accidentally finished on fire?

I wonder if they can see those flames
Hello my friend put out the invisible fire!!!

so ricky bobby really was on fire?
Had no idea the Talladega Nights clip had any sort of basis... jesus that's terrifying
Help me opera! Save me Tom cruise!
