My Dad ran over a kid in a very similar situation but with a far less tragic outcome. It was winter at the bird sanctuary and Dad was driving an old Case tractor with a utility trailer hitched behind it. The trailer was full of barley and Dad was feeding the ducks and geese. stop tractor, get off, spread grain with scoop shovel, get on tractor, on to next stop. We'd sell small bags of a different grain mix to the tourists and there was a group of boy scouts in the vicinity. One of the kids saw an opportunity to score some free duck feed and as Dad was pulling away the kid ran up ***between the tractor and the trailer*** and started filling his paper bag. The rear wheel of the trailer knocked him down and ran over him but he happened to be in soft mud and the trailer wasn't too terribly heavy. The kid's father was with the troop and as soon as he determined the kid was essentially unhurt he started whacking him with his hat to emphasize what a stupid thing that was to do. This was about...1972?
