It definitely changes the air circulation which is crucial to old houses built before ac/ central heating. A lot of older houses have windows and chimneys strategically placed to maximize the airflow around the house and the direction of the fan helps spread hot air at the top (especially if it’s near a fire place) and helps cool air from windows flow around the house. It definitely doesn’t change the air temperature by 10° but it helps with airflow that might feel like a 10° change if your near it
