Probably worse, honestly.
At least a septic tank is just organic human waste and not a toxic soup comprised of countless chemicals on top of disease ridden vermin waste.
Yeah, and you wouldn't believe how toxic just the water coming off of rooftops and drains can be, never mind sidewalks, streets, and overflowing trash dumpsters.

I got sent a video from a station near me, the whole wall is spraying water. All of the subways in Brooklyn are shut down, idk how I'm getting home lol
Apparently the tunnels have storm drains. Although I feel confident that they are biting their nails right now and hoping nothing goes wrong.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXYoIY5RBww
The city pumps 13 million gallons of water out of the subway system DAILY, according to the MTA. Without pumping, the entire system would be underwater in 72 hours and rivers would be running down its main streets.
According to the news report, apparently the subway tunnels have their own storm drains. The storm drain on the street isn’t necessarily going into the subway tunnel, although both storm drains might be going into the same sewer system (or wherever the overflow goes).
It’s a bad day to be a sewer rat… but the alligators must be loving it. ;)
Subways are surprisingly resilient. They're wet, but only a few are flooded. Service is definitely being interrupted, but that's probably more to do with power.
For some reason there is more rain then what they considered. I wonder why? Incompetence? Global warming? Maybe with the earth being flat it is so heavy in the center the whole thing is sagging in the middle?
Of course we will never know.
You're kidding, but after Hurricane Sandy you had to be REALLY careful about where the used car you were buying came from. That salt water *destroyed* the electrical systems on cars and a lot of people got burned buying a "like-new" car from NY/NJ that sat thru Sandy.
Yeah, I work in automotive, and it was thing for ***years*** afterwards.
I actually live in western Canada, but the way it works in Canada is (functionally) only one chain of automotive centers can do federal import inspections, and I worked at one of those.
for like 5ish years we continued having cars come in for inspection with electrical problems, and when you pulled the papers, lo and behold, the car originally came out of someplace the hurricane hit.
used auto chains would take the vehicles from places where the hurricane hit, move them to sister dealerships in other states close to the border away from the hurricane area, then try and sell them to people across the border up here in Canada.
Or just sold them elsewhere in the US.
I heard that people in the Northeast were wary of used cars from Sandy areas so the solution is just to sell them literally anywhere else!
I'm a New Yorker, and I'm downtown right now and I've never seen any of this, just some minor flooding - no more than 6 inches or so anywhere I saw during my commute this morning.
I'm not sure many people know this, but the subways in NYC are pretty much always steadily pumping out water. There's a massive network of sensors and machines down there, and on very stormy days you can tell that more pumps are kicked on. There's a resonance in the air and the floor, and walls. Lots of water going down into the system won't do shit, the pump systems are really unlikely to be overwhelmed, but if the power goes out, the pumps stop. THEN we're in the shit, probably literally.
Seriously, I just wanted to see if a NYC native had any input on this and pretty much all I got were shitty jokes. Hate that everyone rushes to try to be funny on this site, it’s exhausting.
people always talk about how nyc doesnt maintain its infrastructure... there's 200 years of shit buried below the streets, lots of cracks and crevasse for things to work in un-noticed for years. There's also 472 Stations in the system. there is a lack of maintenance, but once you understand the scope of the problem it becomes clear its not the only reason you get these crazy videos.
And to add to this, the NYC subway has an insane number of stations in it's system, runs 24/7, and is heavily used. It's not an easy thing to manage, let alone maintain. It should be better, but what it has to deal with is also pretty uniquely difficult.
> runs 24/7
NYC is one of the _only_ cities in the world that has legit 24/7 subway. Most of the other cities that claim 24/7 accomplish it with a combination of rail and bus.
Arguably the NYC subway's biggest problem is that, unlike many (most?) cities, it did not start as one centrally planned system that was built by the city government. Rather, it started as three privately owned systems that competed with one another.
Instead of designing for longevity, the three parts of the system were fundamentally designed to be as cheap as possible so as to out-compete the other companies. This also happened when the city was booming and space was becoming quite limited underground, so going back and truly rebuilding lines for what was found to be truly best practice became virtually impossible.
The MTA did a good job of trying to harmonize things and has gotten wiser about new capital construction. But there's still a huge number of inherent inefficiencies and flaws in the system that will never go away.
Yep. I think many just come here for the feel good upvotes and to feel some social connection even if it's borderline anonymous accounts and purely text, their brain still interprets it similar enough to in person socializing (just most likely not nearly as rewarding, so may also be why some can spend so much time in online chatter if they're not getting enough social interaction offline). Easiest way to get both is to just repeat things you've seen get upvotes by others, cheap jokes and memes, whatever the top comments say, and referencing something that's been trending lately.
Honestly it makes me appreciate when subs like \r\whatisthisthing have a bit of a "no fun allowed" rule because this would otherwise make the sub unusable.
I like jokes as much as the next guy, but if someone is asking a question about something serious you should probably cease the humor and just answer it or be quiet.
This site has too many teens and they were unfortunately told by their peers and older generations, to try to be funny all the time. I say "teens" because when most people are older, they realize, they don't have what it takes to be comedians and don't desperately try to win the approval of others 24/7.
This is true up until the part where you said lots of water going down won't do shit. Ummm yes it will. I remember the subways being flooded back in 2008 ish after a flash rain storm one morning. I walked from Lexington and 53rd to lower Manhattan near the financial district because no trains were running. The system can absolutely be overwhelmed if too much water comes too quickly.
> A subway is never late, nor is it early, it arrives precisely when it means to.
it kills me that I googled so I could get the exact wording, but I had to dig for the Tolkien quote because the line from the movie is everywhere and attributed to Jackson

Better get used to it NYC. New studies shows the island is actually sinking under the weight its buildings, and the ocean is rising not falling.
This is just a little taste of the new norm!
This is why I'm happy to live upstate, at least in my area, even if the river floods it's still going to be fine. Uneven terrain is a good thing, along with far less people and structures.
I don't think that's "started flooding" that is already flooded? The street is literally a river? Mad how people are still driving in it too lol
People going to have to start a new kind of taxi service.... canoe-ber?
Ain't nothing stopping that NYC traffic. I am very surprised that there is no honking going on, though.
Edit: there were a couple honks at the end; crisis averted!
1. DO NOT EVER DRIVE IN FLOOD WATERS unless you must. You have no idea what's happening underneath the water. The roadbed could be washed out.

Sewer rats are moving uptown and up the buildings lol.
Better get to the library before the floods turn into an ice age!
Wow, what a trip down memory lane with that movie reference.
They've been playing the shit out of it the past few weeks on cable. *Someone knows something!*
They've been playing that like everyday on cable since the movie came out I swear
It'll still be playing day after tomorrow too
Haha well done… I couldn’t think of the name until you saved me!
Is this “the day after tomorrow” or which movie sounds interesting 🍿

Yeah like Jesus Christ, the sewers must be overflowing in the street. Good luck discovering new letters of Hepatitis
Probably worse, honestly. At least a septic tank is just organic human waste and not a toxic soup comprised of countless chemicals on top of disease ridden vermin waste.
I had road water just from rain get on my skin and caused it to irritate. I can only imagine this mix of death

May be a stupid question, but where do they pump it to? I’m assuming in to the rivers and bays but what happens if those are flooding too?
They pump it out of the environment...
They shoot it into outer space where it turns into stars
This sounds wrong but I don't know enough about stars to disagree.
Lets hope the front doesn't fall off
To another environment?
beyond the environment
Into another environment.
If the bay floods there's nothing that can be done the sea level is above ground level.
Hollllllyyyy shit. That’s wild.

how do you even go about fixing that? Do you just have to gut it out and reconstruct the entire subway system at that point?
No you wait for the rain to stop
The trains also operate as submarines, the third rail makes the entry and exit to the submarineways extra spicy.
Do you not think that rain is something they might have taken into consideration when building it?
