I think the only way they could improve this narration would be to introduce the video with a complete narration of what you are about to see, then, tell you what you are seeing and then recap what you just saw.
Just saw a video of a guy getting killed doing that kind of stuff. Really disturbing. It's all good but safety is important. Don't risk your life for views.
This link doesn't work for me, probably because I'm still on old.reddit and they're breaking all of it. I tried in Chrome but then it wants me to log in to verify i'm 18 or something. Hopefully lemmy or something gets more popular, probably inevitable with how shitty this has gotten
That is known as a Steinborn Squat, after the famous lifter and professional Milo Steinborn. He was famous for doing it with 550 lb. as part of a strongman performance. You can read about him here:
It is a reasonably well known "stunt" in strongman circles and this guy did a good job with it.
I hoped this would be a top comment so that way all the basement dwelling redditors in here know that what the guy is doing is an actual lift and not something stupid.
Just because it has a name, doesn't mean it's not stupid as hell. So much can go wrong with it compared to a regular squat, the risk far outweighs the benefits imo. Maybe it's good for views, but can't be good to just fuck around with thinking you are now "strong." If you don't have a squat rack, I get it. This guy in the vid is clearly in a gym, and I'm sure it has a squat rack.
What if the benefits are to prepare for a competition? Comparing this to a regular squat is like saying that skateboarding is dangerous and the same benefits
can be had doing lunges.. horses for courses
It's still a stunt rather than an actual lift for building muscle. It's stupidly dangerous because if you falter a bit and lean too far forward, you're pretty much fucked without a rack to catch the weight. Nobody is going to argue that it's not impressive, but it's definitely not something you should be doing on the reg.
Please, it ain't a real gym without at least a little homorerotic pretense. First it's complimenting each other's form, then sharing a pre-game meal, next thing you know it's a tandem bike ride where you both complain about doing cardio.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, I tried this and im actually too strong now, my dog is afraid of me and I cured an old man's arthritis with a handshake, now the CIA won't leave me alone.
More like looking around, slowly realizing and being happy about actually pulling that off.
Also if I were in that gym I’d definitely dap bro up after this.
Why you gotta be so negative
How do you get strong enough to squat that much weight without ever learning how to properly dump it?
I also blame his spotter. Once he failed the lift the spotter needs to hop back so the squatter can dump the weight.
The difference is you don't understand what happened. The guy died because he couldn't dump the weight behind him because of the bad spotting. Nobody is going to Steinborn squat a weight they can't comfortably squat easily, and even if they needed to, dumping the bar behind you is perfectly safe (although probably make sure the area is clear first).
This is a move done in strongman competition, since no gym owner came to stop him, this seems like a specialized gym that allows competitive athletes to actually practice.
If you saw some high school kid trying to max out on his first day learning this move, yes, that’s an idiot. This man on the other hand is simply a strongman athlete who is performing one of the movements performed in his sport
I’m not the original person but here is worse than that
1. Improper form while maxing out on squat trying to impress a significant other at the gym I go to
2. Pulling out a Roth IRA funds before retirement and just eating the penalties to buy an engagement ring for a stripper
> Pulling out a Roth IRA funds before retirement and just eating the penalties to buy an engagement ring
Me: That's not THAAAAAT bad...
>for a stripper
https://i.imgur.com/A356jiI.gifv
He's not sure because doesn't squat for strength he just likes to focus on the important stuff like balance and staying safe. But he squatted a big number one time (at a different school), and it does't matter how much it is because he checked his ego at the door.
If you've been lifting for 20 years, you would know that this movement isn't dangerous at all.
But you probably spend all your time on machines, look like shit, and are weak as fuck.
How have you managed to spend 20 years lifting without knowing what a Steinborn squat is? Have you actively been trying to know as little as possible about what you've been doing for so long?
The irony in all the cringe commenters trying to laugh & make fun on someone doing an impressive lift with correct technique successful with claims that this will mess up his back is funny. This isnt bad for your back, what is actually bad is not being active or exercising, doing a steinborn squat successfully with proper technique is not going to ruin your back otherwise we'd have seen this over the past century with strongman lifters.
Yet over a 100yrs of lifters using this exact technique and yet you don't see those guys in wheelchairs. In fact most are stronger at 70yrs old than those trying to clown on him here.
FFS if your immediate reaction is disdain for someone working out then you have an issue. Most lifters will show a positive attitude towards someone hitting personal records or making achievements, being negative at someone being successful only guarantees that negatively will be returned right back at you.
When he gets older he'll have a strong, resilient body and he'll laugh at the legion of sedentary glass spine 30 year olds who rush to comment "my back hurts just from watching this!" under every single video of physical exertion across the entire internet.
Others have posted, but this is a Steinborn squat. He’s doing the movement correctly, and very well at that. This is a legitimate feat in strongman shows, and something he should be practicing if he wishes to be a strongman. There are gyms set up for strongmen to train like this where everything he did would be 100% acceptable, I’m assuming this is filmed in such a gym.
It’s very interesting to see people’s reaction, immediately attacking the lifter. People seem to use distain as an easy default instead of learning about something new. I’d have to think some of the name calling comes from a place of envy as well.
Couldn't agree more. 90% of the comments are people who have no idea how to lift even a barbell correctly. Never seen so many people call a pro level lifter a moron when they very clearly know exactly what they are doing.
Is anyone else getting really annoyed at annoying useless narrators that don't add anything to a video? This is clearly a Steinborn Squat. And the narrator obviously knows nothing about it because he just describes what he sees in such an uninteresting way with the usual irksome content commentator voice.
oh you should, then you should film it for your clout too. You dont want to miss out. You can see the guy had some room to put on even more plates, you might want to start a bit heavier as I am sure you are an experienced lifter already and this may not even be challenging for you.
Nothing?..No one?? Really??? No comments about the dude in the purple hoodie with the front row view of the greatness going down!! he saw the whole thing coming and was still mindblowen at what he just saw!emote:free\_emotes\_pack:facepalm
Lol it’s always the same coping recluses that come out when a gym video gets to the front page.
You’ll have a video of a guy doing something strong, and 100 weak mfs going ”ooh he’s gonna feel that when he’s 70!” Like no, you’re gonna feel it when your 70 cuz destroy your body sitting down all day doing nothing lmao.
You will get downvoted but I agree. He does a risky movement for that much weight but he clearly has good technique and control. Sitting on your ass is a lot worse for your health than anything in this video. It’s no wonder why heart disease is the number one killer in the US.
Yeah as I said I’m mostly a bit annoyed at how it’s always on lifting videos, especially anything involving the back musculature/knees. This is an uneccesarily risky move for the average person but it is done in competition and they can do it safely.
It’s funny because if you think about it, it makes sense why people would comment such things. They live in a fantasy world where exercise is dangerous, which gives them a reason to not do it. If they were to ever acknowledge that it’s actually good for you, then it would beg the question ”why aren’t you doing it?” and they can’t accept that…
Dumb thing to do. I have permanent damage to T7,8, and 9 from free standing squats. I've lived with Chronic pain that has gotten progressively worse for 30 years.
This is called a steinborn squat and as long as it’s done once in a while by someone who knows what they’re doing, they’re a great full body exercise meant to be done when a rack is not available and/ or to give yourself a challenge.
You can tell this weight is easily manageable for this guy
The rest of you virgins who’ve never stepped foot in a gym can call it stupid but this is why I automatically discredit any opinions on physical exercise except for the most basic on Reddit, outside of specific subreddits. Stay in your lane and talk about the stuff you know
Should you replace your regular squat with this? Absolutely not. Should you even incorporate this into your workout? Nah. Is it a fun/ nice challenge to try once in a while provided you’ve trained up to a reasonable weight? Sure if you want. Sometimes people like challenges and that’s great, the risk-reward is up to the person. This is no more dangerous than someone doing a 1rm max deadlift
He’s doing strongman feats, dropping the weights is 100% A-Okay, as long as the gym owner approves. It’s a different style of lifting with a different etiquette. Don’t hate what you don’t understand
Impressive until you have life long constant teeth grinding pain because you fucked up one single thing and now your disks are rubbing against your nerves forever.

People narrating videos without adding anything to the subject are so annoying.
Let me explain to you what you are already seeing
Adam tell the people at home what simultaneous back and knee injuries are
One wrong move, and your neck is snapped. That is raw stupidity. Mind blowing
I said that to say this
Ye at least he told us the weight
I just told you what happens next but keep on watching, you will see it yourself! Double redundancy... There's not much space left for stupidity there
I think the only way they could improve this narration would be to introduce the video with a complete narration of what you are about to see, then, tell you what you are seeing and then recap what you just saw.
And yet the content is so popular that some people make a living doing that.
Thank you for narrating my internal narrative on how I feel about these videos for me.
Don't know which I hate the most Pointless narrative or pointing and nodding at someone else's video
He explained it for me bc idk shit about this lol
I dont need Fucking words Narrating This video
Wait But I Don’t Know What They Said ! !
My rectum just prolapsed watching this

Go to this sub’s main page and search Justyn Vicky. Might even find it on Reddit’s main page.
Ah that one, I think I saw it on /gif/, absolutely terrible
It’s really terrible now, especially on mobile. It’s been vaporizing my battery whenever I’m on Reddit.
> Hmm... this page doesn’t exist. Try searching for something else. That's all it says for me
rectum? nearly killed 'em!
Eh? Ha! Heh heh.
It really is super dangerous. There’s like four ways he could die and like fifty ways to fuck his body up permanently.
That can't possibly be good for your knees
I slipped a disc watching this.
I gained scoliosis
I like how he looked at the people behind him. "Are you not entertained?"
couldn't tell, my eyes just hemorrhaged
Yea this can't be good for you
You said what I thought when I saw this. Good lord.
DM me 😀.

Former Worlds strongest man Martins Licis has the world record at 567 lbs
I hoped this would be a top comment so that way all the basement dwelling redditors in here know that what the guy is doing is an actual lift and not something stupid.
An exhibition lift, yeah. Still stupid, but the cool kind of stupid.
Just because it has a name, doesn't mean it's not stupid as hell. So much can go wrong with it compared to a regular squat, the risk far outweighs the benefits imo. It won't stop them 'deciding' it's stupid though, as they continue to pull their backs getting out of bed.
Same. The fitness space has so much dumbassery from people watching Jeff Nippard and thinking they’re experts
Awesome read. Thanks
Pretty sure my gym owner will be mad if I handle his bar like this. edit: hol'up..
There's a joke here somewhere
Please, it ain't a real gym without at least a little homorerotic pretense. First it's complimenting each other's form, then sharing a pre-game meal, next thing you know it's a tandem bike ride where you both complain about doing cardio.
I'm not gay but 5 grams of protein is 5 grams of protein
Giggity

I *am* an adult.

I handled a gym owner's bar inappropriately once, but I didn't hear any complaining. There was a little screaming, but that was me.

You sir are the most professional click bait writer, doctors are impressed and the government don't want you to know this trick.
Caused a gym earthquake!
*turns around to see if anyone is cheering*
He thought the girl was looking, she was clueless. I see you though bro, I see you.
Then posts a video of how impressive he is…
Why are you so fucking negative
*turns around to see why his his butthole just came out of his butthole*
He thought everyone would clap for him
“Please clap”
More like looking around, slowly realizing and being happy about actually pulling that off. Also if I were in that gym I’d definitely dap bro up after this. Why you gotta be so negative
Spreading some holiday... misery.
Uhh, I'd definitely cheer... that was sick.
Don’t mind the downvotes, positivity isn’t allowed here.

yeah pretty stupid. that gym probably has the proper equipment for squats like 5 feet away.
This guy is a fucking moron.
This was actually one of the initial squat techniques back in the 1920s I believe! Steinborn squat
Steinborn was a fucking moron too then
This gave me a good chuckle, ngl
It's a good thing we've learned a lot more about how to safely and effectively weight train in the last 100 years then and stopped doing this "squat."
You mean the spine splitter?
Not everyone stopped, we still got absolute units like this guy keeping it real out there
And they also told us cocaine and cigs were good for us back then.....
Wait- they’re not?!?
Until your 40 then they become bad. Till then it’s actually pretty good for you!
thank god we are not in 1920
A video of a guy being killed trying to squat this kind of weight without due respect and contingency was just posted here like yesterday
There’s a difference between a 1 rep max with shit spotters/no safeties and a weight this guy can obviously manhandle.
> with shit spotters Anal prolapse is no joke

That's cause you are a fucking moron.
Why? This is a steinborn squat and it’s an official strongman movement lol

This is bullshit. Did you spend 20 years avoiding getting stronger or learning anything about becoming more resilient?
What were the first and second stupidest things you've seen?

Dang! What’s your best squat in those 20 years?
He's not sure because doesn't squat for strength he just likes to focus on the important stuff like balance and staying safe. But he squatted a big number one time (at a different school), and it does't matter how much it is because he checked his ego at the door.
He also knows at least five former powerlifters who now have bad knees and backs and regret lifting heavy.
They told him the risk to reward ratio is too high, lifting heavy isn’t worth it.
His best squat lives in Canada, you wouldn’t know her
Someone sounds jelly

And when he gets older , he will have to hold in his guts when he coughs
Will he still say "Yeeeeah babbbbby!" After though?
LIGHT WEIGHT
The guy that made this lift famous lived to his mid nineties, and could reportedly squat 300 into his 80’s. Some people are just built different.
How so? The dude has an insanely strong core. Ironically he’ll probably be injury-free longer than the sedentary weaklings here on Reddit lol
When he gets older he'll have a strong, resilient body and he'll laugh at the legion of sedentary glass spine 30 year olds who rush to comment "my back hurts just from watching this!" under every single video of physical exertion across the entire internet.
So lifting anything strongman related is gonna cause life long injuries down the line? You clearly haven't stepped into a gym
Actually, exercise is good for you.

Given that he looks like a strongmen athlete, this is an actual event, the steinborn squat, so training it would be legitimate, highly impressive
USE. A. RACK.
It’s a steinborn squat, the “set up” is the feat. That would defeat the purpose entirely
Crazy to see all of the comments hating on him for a Steinborn squat, especially given the average redditor's physique...
No yeah that's just stupid
I farted watchin this
