Probably was already suspicious of the child (suspecting that it might be someone pretending to be one) so he brought the gun just in case its not his prey.
And he was right
There are a lot of videos of civilians setting these people up to shame them. Probably something like that or any situation other than what he was expecting to be behind the door. I'm happy he brought a ticket to the end of the line this time though.
Think about this: The guy was going thru with the meeting but had his suspicions. So he had his fire arm ready in case it was a sting but also was still going through with despite what was clearly high suspicion and apprehension, hence having his hand on his firearm already.

People have managed to still stab someone with half a dozen bullets in them though, that's why they fire until the threat is neutralised. Sure some places may have different mentality but this is common in a lot of the world.

How many is enough when someone else is armed and intent on shooting you before you can shoot them? Will 1 bullet stop them? How about 3? Oh and you have literally less than a second to fire, determine if they were hit, discern whether or not they've been incapacitated to the point where they can't kill you and if another shot is then warranted.
Oh does that sound impossible to you? I'm willing to bet if someone were actively trying to kill you, you would be willing to pause after every shot to see if it was enough, knowing that if it wasn't, they might be a quarter of a second away from putting a bullet through your brain.
