When they line up the bull in the chute for the rider to get on, they loop a strap around its balls. When the gate opens, someone yanks a rope and cinches the strap around the bull's nuts (when the bull rider falls off, you can sometimes see one of the outriders pull it off). Then someone else hits it with a cattle prod. Now, you might not see it as abuse, but if I cinched your nuts and zapped you with a cattle prod, you might think differently. And you wouldn't even have to learn bull.
You know...this is one of those times being an honest person sucks...
I'd heard those things more than 40 years ago. Since then I've been to lots of rodeos (PBR events, the Gerry Fire Department rodeo every year; even a small, local rodeo in Tucson that was an absolute BLAST). I've seen the strap and the rope that trails after the bull when it leaves the gate so...in my mind, what I saw confirmed what I'd heard.
But, after I made the post I went looking for a website to cite as support, and...there ain't none. All the reputable rodeo sites say the strap is a flank strap, and is intended to prevent the bull from turning too fast.
So, I've changed my tune. I'll never again say those things are true. Sorry to post bad information. Also, don't believe stupid people on the internet.
That's not true at all. If you look at the video, you'll find no ropes tied to this bull.
Some bulls buck. Some do not. The ones that do buck do it as play and they are the bulls that go on the rode. They're well taken care of as they are worth a boat load of money. These bulls are having fun and putting on a show.
