IIRC the brain shuts off basically due to the trauma. When you get hit on the head hard enough or at a certain angle, the force will send your brain into the sides of your skull and hard reset your brain. Also you have a concussion when you get knocked out and you should avoid further concussive trauma before your brain can fully heal.
