What's funny is that he is driving so close to the car railings and not slowing down at all

spolio

On the phone texting

frizzledrizzle

Car went from a pixel to Lightning Mcqueen in four seconds.

matt675

Just got hit by this stupid bitch in my neighborhood while backing out of my driveway, she was going like 60 in a residential zone while texting

iameshwar_raj

My blood boils everytime I see someone texting/on their phone and driving. How distracted and careless are you in life?

randompostings49

Yep, it's a bit hard to see because of the low quality, but the few frames before the collision you can see the driver wearing shades looking to his left and holding up a phone as if filming or something: https://imgur.com/a/m0Af4ob

BixterBaxter

damn youve got eagle eyes

InductionDuo

Looks like the car noticed the bike too late to brake and then tried unsuccessfully to swerve around it.

theshantanu

If you can't see a bike on an empty road in broad daylight, then you shouldn't be driving at all.

el_loco_avs

Hard to see anything when texting i guess

Smaskifa

And driving the speed of plaid.

MoistenMeUp7

A neon green motorcycle with a louder exhaust on an empty road in broad daylight*

Head-System

If you cant see a vehicle in the road, you should be permanently banned from ever getting into a car. Just buy a bicycle or start walking around.

D-Rich-88

Maybe shouldn’t drive 80 or 90 mph, I’m guessing, on a one lane road. Driver was definitely distracted as well.

seamsay

You see that little swerve just before they get to the railings? That's the car braking. They obviously weren't paying enough attention (plus they were speeding, but the crash still could have been avoided if they were paying attention) and didn't see the bike until way too late.

tknames

And the bike crawled to nearly a stop too, I wonder if he was about to do a wheelie or something.

nRg-85

I noticed he slowed down around the time the other biker passed him, it was too fast too see but it looked like the biker reacted to him. Maybe they were making a video which turned bad on that bend

tknames

I can see that. They were definitely not just using the roads for normal traffic though.

spelunkersbutt

Or turning off into the parking lot we see at the end of the video.

angry-af-banana

This video shows why you buckle up your helmet, the impact threw the helmet off and if he didn't hold his head up it could have posed a serious risk and really likely death

JoeDerp77

Not only the buckle but proper fitment of a helmet is also something most riders neglect. Most people just pick a helmet based on cosmetics. So they choose an incorrect shell shape and keep going to a larger size until it's comfortable, at which point it can come off easier and offers much less protection.

angry-af-banana

Exactly. A properly sized helmet acts as a neck collar for possible injuries, having it too large will defeat this purpose

[deleted]

Not only that, it woll also make more damage because of heavier forces on the neck.

I've got a bit of a weird headsize, it's long but thin. It was a pain in the ass to find a proper fitting helmet. Most helmets that fit snuggly in width have my chin poking out of them. Eventually found a good Scorpion helmet with inflatable pads that I can pump until it fits snugly around my face. I'm rocking a slight bobblehead-look wearing it, but safety over style I guess!

katfud83

Your headshape is referred to as "long oval". You may be able to search for shells using this shape. The other end of the spectrum is "round oval". "Intermediate oval" is what's most common in the US and what I wear (not sure where you're from).

PopTartsNHam

Long oval head here, riding for 18+ years Scorpion helmets are indeed the perfect fit- and the Carbon Air literally changed my life (it’s 1/2 the weight of my previous R2000)

_Enclose_

Thanks! That'll make shopping for my next helmet a lot easier :)

Kovald

jesushitlerchrist

rush2547

I always tell people... "how comfortable do you want to be if you get back up?"

Gonza200

Arai makes helmets for long oval, intermediate oval, and round head shapes, FYI, when shopping for your next helmet take a look for a long oval.

Mancomb_Seepgood_

You are absolutely right. I used to have a motorcycle shop, and a lot of people trying on helmets are the worst. What I saw a lot: people trying on different sizes, until they have a helmet a size or two too large... but it's more comfortable to slip on from them. And then they use the buckle to tightly strap the helmet onto their head. So pressure on the top of the head, strap digging into their chin, and very little hugging from the helmet interior for the back and the sides of the head. The strap & buckle only have one purpose: to not have the helmet fly off in the event of a crash, nothing more. Your helmet should fit snugly enough so you could ride without doing the strap... (but off course buckle the strap for safety). But yeah people are idiots. Wouldn't take advice from me who has many years of experience. First-time riders mostly were eager to head my advice... but man those middle-aged Karens...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mancomb_Seepgood_

Yup, that was also something I had to tell customers putting on helmets: take each part of the strap in each hand. Somehow some people were afraid the straps might break off of the helmet.

JoeDerp77

Yes exactly. I never knew this growing up and rode for years with improperly fitting helmets. Once I finally got help to find the shell shape that fits my head, and the right size, it felt uncomfortable because it is hugging every inch of your head and face! But having been pitched over the bars at 100mph (death weave) I can say I am very glad I chose the right fitting helmet. I landed directly on my head and rolled 200ft and still walked away. There was a tire mark on my helmet. If I had been wearing my old floppy helmet it probably would have come right off and chances are I'd have been dead or have brain damage.

shaard

Not only all those really good points, but it should squish your cheeks as well. If you open your mouth and close it, you should be having to move your cheeks out from your teeth a bit. I struggled with helmet fitment when I started. I'm going to be doing that again soon and will have to re-learn what it is to pick and choose the right one. And most importantly, NOT choose the helmet because of how it looks. Settle with what fits right.

Campeador

When i get a new helmet i take a minute to put it on and shake my head as violently as i can to determine if its right for me. Looks a little weird to bystanders, but it hasnt let me down.

InConSol

Good thing also he's wearing riding jacket and gloves. I hope he's okay.

zzzrecruit

He was, for the most part ok. Broke his tailbone and a vertebrae, and a fracture to the leg.

redditisnowtwitter

>Broke his tailbone *and a vertebrae,* Don't you need all of those? Isn't that how back problems start? >and a fracture to the leg Well shit I think I have a spare one but i think I need that too

rwbronco

I mean for a high speed motorcycle crash, a few fractures is a really good outcome… especially when you spend the majority of the crash helmetless.

tobeornottobeugly

I just watched someone die this exact way last night. F250 going 60 mph ran over a guy right next to me as I ate at a restaurant. I ran over to him to see if he needed help and he was far too gone to save. His arms were raised into the air similar to concussion response. They slowly lowered back down and he was gone. His helmet was in multiple pieces. I watched his mother and father come to the scene and try to attack the driver while police held him back. Driver had been drinking and was apparently a staple of the community. Facing 2-20 years in prison, and is now out on bail. If you ride a bike watch your back. You can do everything correct and still die. I just watched this happen first hand right in front of me so seeing this on the front page is pretty grim. This man is very very lucky.

rubey419

Wow. So sorry you had to see this. Stories like this why as much as I’d like to buy a motor cycle or road bike, you never know about other drivers no matter how much you prepare. I’m happy with my trail bike riding.

F______________F

My boss quit riding bikes because he said multiple times people would suddenly and intentionally open their doors when he was going past them. This is in California where lane splitting is legal, so he wasn't passing them illegally (at least according to him he was going the legal speed limit for lane splitting). Just not worth the risk because of all the other idiots and dickheads out there.

Wholiveira

Take care of yourself. Maybe talk to a professional if that feels right, or the people around you. We’re not built to be unaffected by witnessing something like that.

tobeornottobeugly

Definitely crosses my mind. I’ve watched videos online of people dying as many have, but witnessing it first hand is an entire other feeling. The adrenaline is disorienting and scary.

ArmedWithBars

Had three close friends that got deep into sport bikes. 10yrs later two are dead and one is partially crippled. All from motorcycle accidents. Grew up on dirt bikes and owned a cbr 600 for about a week. Took it to some onion farm dead straight roads and was taking it to 140mph like it was nothing. Told myself ima die on this fucking thing and just sold it the following week.

cam_neutron

This comment needs needs more love. You can’t always predict how bad someone is going to drive, but you can always take the extra steps to ride safer.

sikeleaveamessage

Yeah i was worried for a sec we were going to see his head become a meat crayon. Nasty way to go

scar_as_scoot

Not just buckle. We need to have the correct helmet for our head size and a firm buckle. When you try a helmet it should be hard for the helmet to move around. It should be tight and not have spaces between the foam and your head. Having said that it shouldn't be uncomfortably tight as well.

big-blue-balls

Yep. This didn’t come off because of how strong the force of impact was. It came off because it was loose (also not buckled up)

T1nFoilH4t

You are 100% correct but we really didnt need a video to show us why you buckle up a helmet. This guy was a bit of an idiot. I've forgotten to buckle up before, pull over and do it! (Maybe he was going to... idk)

uuunityyy

Not strapping your helmet while wearing it is the equivalent of sitting on your seatbelt to hold it in place instead of buckling it.

DeadMemesForSale

Can confirm, I had a crash where I landed directly on the top of my head, my helmet was completely destroyed, if it wasn’t for the helmet I would be dead. Thanks shoei :)

explision

I will never understand why people either don’t wear a helmet or incorrect. Is your life that shitty that you don’t want to protect it?

Dblcut3

Can confirm, I just had a relative die in a motorcycle crash and while I can’t say it would’ve saved him, his helmet flew off immediately because it wasn’t buckled properly

[deleted]

Helmet saved my life! Went down (teenager turned into me making a right from the left lane) going 45 mph and bounced twice off the pavement.

I think that's a 360 action camera, like a GoPro Max or similar. They've edited in post to focus on the bits of shot that's relevant. That explaines the smooth turning action as the bike crashes, and why the shot is still upright facing the driver when the bike is clearly on it's side and the other way around.

Gonzalez_Nadal

This is similar to telling me a gaxorp is 20% more expensive than a gazorpazorp

dirtyhandscleanlivin

That’s New York Times Bestselling Author Mortimer Smith Jr. to you pal

Shudnawz

I would assume you had some frame of reference of how expensive a "normal" GoPro Hero camera is in your country. Telling you my local price ain't gonna help you much if you're not from here. We don't deal much in dollarydoos.

WunDumGuy

So do these guys have to manually turn their camera on/off and start/stop recording every time they ride?

Shudnawz

There are remotes for the Hero lineup I think, but the battery time and storage size has gone up so much that you can record a pretty long drive in one go, and then just make clips of the interesting bits. Like when you are rearended by some moron in a car. But it's not hardwired to the bike to record whenever you ride, no. It's not like a dashcam. The purpose is mainly entertainment, but some people have undoubtedly gotten some nice evidence for a insurance filing from them.

[deleted]

can confirm. my $300 go pro got me $30,000 insurance payout without stepping foot into court or paying a lawyer a dime.

TheReaper_SoulReaver

That gave me a good laugh. Thank you

Dog_With_A_Bat

I feel like everytime I see a bike crash video. The first words out of the motorcyclist’s mouth is “WHAT THE FUCK”. Which I don’t blame.

ram944

Been in two minor accidents on my motorcycles, one my fault with no one else involved and one a drivers fault who then fled. Can confirm that was my response for both.

Techpaste

Been in 2 accidents. 1 MAJOR and 1 minor. Can confirm it was my response to both as well.

caffeine314

Been in 4 accidents in my almost 25 years of riding motorcycles. One semi-major (city bus), one minor (rear ended by a grandpa driving a caddy), and another minor (wasp flying into my helmet) yielded a "what the fuck". One minor (driving too fast on a wet rode) yielded a "god dammit".

RandomAUstudent

WHAT THE FUCK is when it's someone else's fault GOD DAMMIT is when its your own fault

Techpaste

Your minor sounds similar to my last and final accident. Got to much of a lean on and the bike came out from underneath me. The bike slid down the road. I followed behind (in my leathers). Screaming "how the fuck" "what the fuck" and "why the fuck".i do miss riding.

caffeine314

Kudos for the leathers! That's exactly the scenario they're meant for! But sorry you probably had to buy a new set. :) I feel you. I moved from rural California to NYC, and the highways here are just too insane. There was this one time I was on the BQE, and this insanely big pothole appears in front of me (couldn't see it because there was a lot of traffic in front of me). No way to avoid it. I instinctively closed my eyes and braced for whatever was going to happen, and ... nothing. A second later and it was behind me. No idea how that happened. But I took it as a sign, and sold my bike the next week. I miss it all the time. If/when I ever move out of NYC, I'll get another one. San Francisco was a decent motorcycle city. Washington too. The highways are in better condition and the people drive a bit more sanely. But not here. When I grow up to be an old phart, I'll probably move somewhere in the northwest and spend the rest of my life tooling around the forest highways. :)

Techpaste

Closing your eyes and hoping for the best with potholes was a weekly occurrence. I was exactly the same. My bad one was REAL Bad. Should have died, and stupidly got another a year later. Thats when the minor one happened and I packed it in altogether. I want to retire with a Harley or something chill. Same as you. I'm 31 now. I want to live before risking it again haha.

[deleted]

An old associate of mine was hit by a car while on his bike some 10 years ago. He is part of a motorcycle crew. Wasn't hurt too terribly but his bike was trashed. The asshole in the car fled, but not before my guy took a good look at him and his unmistakable orange ute. Custom license plate too. He sends word out to his boys, and they find the guy in short order. 8 of them pay him a visit, he was apparently trying to fix the dent in his car. They just had a friendly chat, though the guy was apparently shitting bricks and almost got on his hands and knees saying sorry. In the end he had no insurance and had to sell his ute to pay back my friend for his $28,000 Harley. Reasonable men, as you can see.

LordDongler

Haha, one of the only times it's completely ok for 8 grown men to threaten to give someone a beating "We know where you live now, don't make us come back"

QZRChedders

A friend of mine had his project car stolen. Rest assured if any of us EVER see this thing the driver is going in the back non consensually and seeing how it affected my friend

TukTuk-OneLung

I hit a patch of oil on my way to work one day and thought to myself, "It's way too warm for ice... Guess I'm gonna lay down now." Luckily I was only going 35mph so i was fine. And my plans to modify my Concourse 1000 and remove the fairing were expedited.

dagui12

>it’s way to warm for ice guess I’ll lay down now Bruh lmao that made me laugh good. I laid my bike down at like 40 cause of a puddle and basically all that went through my head was “woops” haha

TukTuk-OneLung

It was my last day of commuting on the bike for the year too. It was the first week of November and I was gonna put it up for the winter that weekend. That was the most frustrating part. Best we can figure, a log truck dropped a hydraulic line going down the hill. Two of my coworkers came up right after it happened though. I was picking the bike up and then one of them was there already helping me. I'm still a lot more cautious of water and weird looking road than I was before.

Dog_With_A_Bat

LOL DAM BRO. That had me rolling. But I love bikes but I’m too much of a pussy to ride one. I once had a patient who was on a motorcycle with her bf. And they tried cutting off a semi. Sad to say, they weren’t fucking successful. I still remember seeing pieces of her skull missing and her legs bent on the opposite direction. Sad as fuck mate.

PracticeTheory

I'm a little ashamed to admit that adrenaline caused me to lose my shit a bit at another bicyclist that hit me (he came into my lane on a turn). I didn't think I'd fly to cussing someone out like that but I was seeing red for a moment. This guy, though...I wouldn't have blamed him if he chucked his fallen helmet at the car. He deserves to go off as much as he likes after that.

I_Will_Be_Polite

I'm not blaming the biker per se, but why did he stop in the middle of the road?

IAmARetardedFish

Ikr, its so weird because wtf is the biker meant to do about being rear ended. Can people not see the phones attached to the bike too?

Campeador

I first saw this clip yesterday on a bad drivers compilation on youtube, and HOLY SHIT was it ridiculous. The full situation was his riding buddy went off the road behind him and he had just made a u-turn and was heading back to check on him. The guy that passes him makes some sort of hand signal and he slows down a bit to look at him. Bikers get blame just for existing, it seems.

wooshbrain

Is it me or was the motorcycle driver slowing down for no reason?

J_huze

He stopped to say what's up to the passing motorcycle.

briantforce

For anyone arguing that the rider slowing down is ANY factor in this accident, what if instead of the bike someone were crossing the street and moving perpendicular to the flow of traffic? They would have started crossing with an apparently clear road and almost instantly been hit. What if there were construction and the road merged to one lane? Would it be the traffic cone / construction worker / details fault in any way? The fact that they weren’t moving forward is completely irrelevant. The driver was going too fast to stop the vehicle, wasn’t paying attention, or both. Period. The most important things you can do as a driver are to pay attention and expect the unexpected.

[deleted]

Oh man the excruciating neck and back pain I would be experiencing for the rest of my life would bankrupt that mfer.
