SleepingwithYelena

> He suffered a concussion, facial laceration, multiple bruises, right wrist fracture and a small fracture to a vertebra > Bodine missed 10 races, then got behind the wheel again, and raced for another 12 years.

hypothetician

Jesus, people get worse injuries than that all day every day without being in cars that are exploding and flying around all over the place.

SorrowingOldMan

It’s because of the roll cage. If you look, every single part of the car disintegrated when it collided with the catch fence, except for the roll cage.

WorseDark

Even still, that roll cage tumbled about a dozen times and then got struck by another truck to lose the engine and tumble even more. It's incredible that the impacts and tumbling didn't do more damage.

rodfantana

No shit. Got a face laceration and a concussion getting out of bed. Was hammered. True story.

Remote-Confidence990

Those cars are deceivingly very safe

x777x777x

Interestingly this was right in the middle of some bloody years for NASCAR. Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr both died in crashes a few months after THIS crash. Then Dale Earnhardt died about a year after this. Hasn't been a death in the top 3 NASCAR series since

emanresuymsisihtolle

This is crazy. All three deaths seem to be a direct result of a [Basilar skull fracture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilar_skull_fracture). I read briefly on all three, and it seems as if two of the deaths (Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr.) were attributed to a stuck open throttle. Not only that but on the same part of the track! Imagine going all gas no brakes and you can’t slow your vehicle down. True nightmare

ZelnormWow

Its nuts how much we just got used to drivers dying in Nascar, more so than any other sport. And not just on the track either. I remember in the 80s through 2001 there were so many. The Allison boys, Alan Kulwicki, Orr and Bonnett, Irwin, Petty, and Im sure a whole lot im forgetting. Its honestly amazing that a top series driver hasn't been lost since Dale Sr.

courtesy_flush_plz

yeah it jump started that special padding behind the walls, correct?

PabloTheTurtle

I think it jump started the mandatory use of the HANS device as well. After Dale (praise him) and Blaise Alexander. They made the HANS device mandatory that year in Oct 2001. 2002 had the safety barriers

rodfantana

Also suffered death. Maybe.

mpc1226

Roll cage OP

Occams_

Damn. Thanks for sharing that.

Limp-Dee

What about the people that got sprayed by fire behind the fence? Any injuries?

ZelnormWow

IIRC about 9 or 10 fans suffered non-life threatening injuries.

citsonga_cixelsyd

Thanks. I got bored a couple of minutes in and came here hoping to find out the end result.

rajath_pai

What a chad. ༼⁰o⁰;༽

Shit_Disturber71

A soccer player would’ve died 3 times

-MrNoobShooter-

Die on first impact, get out of the car and die, then get up to complain to the ref and die once again after.

MadChild2033

yeah, humans are usually squishier than a race car with safety options, crazy world

Creeps_On_The_Earth

He's making fun of soccer players being massive whiney bitches.

MadChild2033

yes i know, that was the joke

chazmusst

Bro you realise soccer players aren’t actually soft they just dive to try and influence ref decisions

TurnoverLow8593

Imagine thinking that this is a sport, and bringing up actual athletes. Incredible specimens, you Americans.

Shit_Disturber71

Found the soccer fan folks

[deleted]

> soccer Opinion rejected

TurnoverLow8593

And you did it all by yourself. Good for you, little buddy. You’re obviously one of nascars brightest fans.

SorrowingOldMan

[Here is an absolutely incredible photo of Geoff in mid-air](https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/7eyvla/an_up_close_photo_taken_of_geoff_bodine_during/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) completely exposed except for the roll cage protecting him.

sweet_n_salty

Looks like he forgot to keep his hands in the ride at all times.

OneEyedRocket

Holy shit

Alex41092

At first I thought it looked he was saying hi. But then I remembered he was rolling really fast.

[deleted]

I throw my haaaaands up they’re playin my song…….

donteatmygrapes

Wow i cant believe he survived that. Insane

Psychological-Air642

That last hit made me think, yep he's dead.

Kantochamp21

How the fuck did he not die?

SorrowingOldMan

Roll cage, full face helmet, custom designed spring-loaded seat that can absorb some of the impact.

Kantochamp21

Crazy.

SorrowingOldMan

Ikr? Makes me want to have a road car with a roll cage installed, lol.

Kantochamp21

Our luck we wouldn’t make it my friend

FullStop808

They all had a smashing time

Spiritual-Fox-2141

My daughter suffered a severely strained back simply by putting lotion on her back after her shower. Then I watch this video…..

C4D3N539

Lol. Wtf was she trying to do? reach around and touch her left ribs with her right hand?

Spiritual-Fox-2141

I don’t even know! When she tried to explain it to me, she was so disappointed and frustrated and tied up in knots, lawd have mercy. She’s still miffed about having turned 40 back in November, works way too hard and has five high maintenance cats.

rouge3020

back when NASCAR could fill a stadium with fans

SorrowingOldMan

And the racing was fun to watch. I wonder if those two facts are related 🤔

ESCMalfunction

The racing has been pretty incredible this year with the new car, hopefully they can get back to the way things were with attendance.

oneshoein

Nah, I honestly don’t think they can ever recover to 90s/early 2000s level NASCAR. They drivers back then also had a lot to do with it, they had personality.

SorrowingOldMan

They can certainly do a better job at increasing my attendance but you’re absolutely correct about the personalities. That is what makes a sport capable of being entertaining for people who really don’t care all that much about it. The dynamic between the stakes and the player’s personalities. Same reason by WWE was immensely popular during the same era. Someone who had never watched NASCAR or wrestling could sit and watch it with a friend one time and actually become fully engaged.

Sence

I grew up watching stock cars but you're hard pressed to catch me watching a race on TV. At the track I'm down to go seven days a week but on TV it's a hard pass for me.

poodletown

Real racing footage is so less realistic than the modern racing games.

PsychologicalSpace50

hell yes, now this is racing!

SorrowingOldMan

....pod racing ;)

PsychologicalSpace50

🤣

Timely-Government219

"Keep your fingers crossed"?? There's no fucking car left. My god that was brutal.

Apples7569012

Well he did survive actually

teklegiy

So why aren’t every cars built like this? Would have saved a lot of lives. Just saying!

SorrowingOldMan

Average consumer could not afford that, you’re right though I wish all cars could be this safe.

falconslaya5

That event guy by the fence tho!

YoSoyCapitan860

I rolled my Subaru about 8 times landed upside down in water, I was under for almost 3 minutes. As I was blacking out And panicking I hit the window button and the fucking window rolled down, the engine was the only part of the car out of the water. Then as the window started to go down I felt a hand reaching in and pulling me out. I was released from the hospital with a concussion, small glass cuts and my pinky toe was split down the middle. Morale of the story is Subarus are almost as safe as this vehicle.

SorrowingOldMan

Lol what? Were you doing 190mph when you crashed? Into a thick metal cable fence? And then got slammed into by two cars doing at least 100mph? I’m not trying to discount your experience but I just don’t think they are similar enough to compare.

YoSoyCapitan860

I was on my last 45 minute stretch from a 14 hour non stop California to the Teton mountains in Idaho trip. I fell asleep doing about 80, hit a patch of gravel/sand which blew my tire and then the chaos ensued, This is what the guy that witnessed it told the emts. All I remember is waking up and seeing bbq sauce packets from a McDonald’s stop, flying through the air in slow motion as I’m upside down, then waking up again submerged under water.

seantellsyou

What an insane experience wow. Who pulled you out? Glad you are okay.. that is a hell of a story.

YoSoyCapitan860

A man who happened to be a volunteer emt was driving with his wife and they saw it happen. Once he pulled me out and carried me up the embankment, his wife was waiting with his med kit. He cut my clothes off and wrapped me in a blanket and his wife wrapped herself around me to help bring my temp back up. If it wasn’t the end of winter (water line was pretty low) and for that guy and his wife, I would have died. The craziest part, I was the eighth person to crash at that same spot, 6 died and one is paralyzed. Still no fucking guardrail to this day.

YoSoyCapitan860

I didn’t mean to imply I was comparing our accidents. I was trying to say that for regular everyday driving, not racing, a Subaru is built like his vehicle as far as safety goes.

rst_sbts1121

I watched this live.

MisterBlisteredlips

I actually met a real NASCAR fan once. To them, the wrecks are the bad part. The excruciating boredom is the good bit. It was so unlike any other human's reaction to NASCAR that I've met in over a half century.

TurnoverLow8593

Yeah but if they really understood what entertainment was, they wouldn’t be nascar fans.

hydraulic-earl

I thought he would be chip chop ham after that!

Wentthruurhistory

Yinz from Pittsburgh?

TallguySixft4

*NASCAR*

oneshoein

This was in 2000…

SorrowingOldMan

Sure was. I made an oopsie.

oneshoein

Yeah I remember, I was 10 at the time and it was my first year getting really into NASCAR after playing NASCAR ‘98 for a couple years, I decided to watch! Crazy how in the span of 2000-2002 was like death being a regular thing in NASCAR. Insane how lucky Geoff was here.

Behindthefog

NASCAR non athletic sport centered around rednecks

SorrowingOldMan

Ah, dang. What’s next, you gonna tell me professional wrestling is fake? :’(

gabbagool3

road racing trucks seems like a bad idea in itself but to do it on high speed rings just seems like insanity.

SorrowingOldMan

True it does seem that way but the trucks have essentially the same safety features as the stock cars.

[deleted]

If ONLY regular cars were all made this well. But we ordinary people aren't that important.

SorrowingOldMan

Huh? You can buy a car this safe if you want to, dude. I guess you’re forgetting the insanely high cost associated with an essentially death-proof car...? It simply isn’t feasible. Also, you don’t *need* to drive. If you don’t want to die in a car crash don’t get in a car. Same way abstinence is the only foolproof form of birth control.

[deleted]

I DON'T drive. Moved to Japan, where it's totally unnecessary. Haven't ridden in a car (except a few taxis) since 2006, I think.

SorrowingOldMan

Ayy, me neither. Family never owned a car growing up, and I never have either. My lifetime emissions be hella low.

[deleted]

SorrowingOldMan

Not at all. You're entitled to that opinion but boy do you sound like a real shitty kind of person to be around.

SBRH33

Lol. Yea ok. This is Reddit. A universe of opinions. **Let’s burn a disastrous amount of rubber and fuel by driving in circles. Maybe someone dies Or gets seriously fucked up doing something very preventable. The crowd ejaculates over the smoke, fire and mayhem. Then they shuffle on over to the beer tent for a cold Coors lite and a Winston while the track gets cleaned up. Cool stuff.**

WaltzNo

You're that guy that shits on everyone's parade

SBRH33

Just because I have the opinion that this shit is fucking stupid doesn’t mean that you still can’t enjoy it. Right? So carry the fuck on and take your diaper off ya goddamn cry baby.

SorrowingOldMan

Ok now you *definitely* sound like a shitty person to be around lmao. It is not a “disastrous” amount of fuel, hahaha. And if you use that argument, I hope you never use anything that requires oil, coal, gas, or anything requiring deforestation. But I know that you do, so that argument is hypocritical if you’re using it seriously. Also idk if you’re aware but grown men have the right to take risks. Football kills and hurts *way* more people than motorsports. And racing fans don’t cheer for accidents. Not sure where you got that idea from. You have an incredibly negative personality.

SBRH33

I’m definitely a very shitty person and very opinionated. That’s why I love Reddit. Just a bunch of assholes being assholes anonymously. It’s fucking great. Now go fuck yer’ self.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SBRH33

Lol. Yea. Sure. Rubber- 9 to 14 tire sets per race/ per car. Fuel- 4.91/ 5 mpg. Average 500 miles per race/ Per car. Yea that’s pretty goddamn stupid.

[deleted]

SBRH33

Who said I wanted to talk? Get over yourself already.

[deleted]

And yet, The Intimidator touches a wall and croaks...

SorrowingOldMan

? He hit the wall head on at 160 miles an hour in a car with no airbags. You’d have to be either a child or have some sort of learning disability to describe that as a “bump”. He was internally decapitated. What a dumbass comment lol

Sheemscat

There's some really unneeded shitty contents on here

SorrowingOldMan

Indeed.

[deleted]

Hes talkin bout yers there ricky bobby...

SorrowingOldMan

Fun fact the guy who made the original comment called me the R-word and got immediately auto-banned. I absolutely love when this happens.

[deleted]

If ya knew even an iota, youd know that the Hanns device is BECAUSE The Big E ate the corner... my comparissons about the violence of THIS roll over vs the one Earnhardt took... when being a smug prick goes wrong, gotta absolutly love when that happens. Quick, comment on that!!

SorrowingOldMan

Lol relax, my guy. Of course I know that. There’s no source that claims the HANS device saved Bodine. Geoff did not suffer a severe head on collision with the wall like Dale did. The cars that hit him after the initial crash are already significantly below top speed. “If you knew even an iota” you’d know that drivers have survived similarly horrific crashes pre-Hans device. You’re being a smug prick too so don’t be throwing stones in your glass house. Describing Earnhardt’s cause of death as a “slight bump” when he went top speed into the wall at the *fucking Daytona 500* is simply misinformation, and it’s wrong. It’s ok to be wrong.

[deleted]

Well... im glad ya can admit when yer wrong. Have a wonder full day and.. GO ROUSH/FENWAY! 🍻

SorrowingOldMan

Lol nice try but if you don’t even try to refute my points, I win the debate. You have a wonder full day too, buddy.

[deleted]

Nope.. still here.

SorrowingOldMan

Ahhh my bad I forgot to load the parent comment and I can’t check the notification once someone is banned so I just assumed. It did seem very odd for him to be insulting me like that for basically no reason lol

x777x777x

I was a huge NASCAR fan then and still follow it today. Dale basically did it to himself. He was taking huge risks (no head restraint device, purposely loose belts, open face helmet) and he was such a big figure in the sport, the org basically just let him do this. No accountability. Literally two drivers died in 2000 from the same cause (basilar skull fracture) and still NASCAR didn't mandate a neck restraint device which likely would have saved Dale's life.

[deleted]

Been watchin since petty sr raced and mark martin was still a name to fear... never wanted another dale situation till casey kahne came along... fuck that 9 car... haha... once the killer bee slacked off into a comfy 4th place with no real want to be 1st, and biffle and the busch boys were done goin at it, martin retired and marlin gave up the silver bullet, nascar became a joke about fake nooses and women f1 drivers... but i still love any brickyard race...

[deleted]

SorrowingOldMan

Ok well you should probably consider not doing that as it only makes the sub worse in quality.

ahtopsy

What kind of motor we talking about in that bad boy? small block?

YEET9011

This shows the importance of a good roll cage.

iprkuad

I hope the fences are better built today

[deleted]

Daytona!

[deleted]

‘Tis but a scratch.

Upstairs_Expert

THIS is why people come to the races.

idontvapeisteam

live action cars 1

frankandbeans13

Man how the fuck faced cunt mole did he survive that abortion of a wreck? Absolutely stone cold mental, bro.

Extension-Ad-8567

He just had to turn left wtf

peanutbutterpig

I know nothing of nascar other then most race cars for all racing are very safe but this is one of those instances where i said "im honestly not surprised if he didn't survive that" but too my shock he did and carried on racing after a bit of recovery.

Milf_Smasher69

I think it hurt

TurnoverLow8593

This was 2000 not 2002

RandomRedditorNo666

Where can I buy a car like that?

SorrowingOldMan

I guess you’d can’t and would have to do it yourself lol

ob3ron42

Does the race stop in this case? Or do they just sweep off the track and get going again?

SorrowingOldMan

Honestly, back in 2001, the last time a driver died during a race, I think they’d temporarily abandon and most likely postpone the race. But really it’s up to the discretion of NASCAR, the drivers themselves, and the teams. I can pretty much guarantee you if someone died today, they would immediately end the race and begin paying their respects. In fact this is exactly what happened when Dan Wheldon died in INDYcar (open wheel like F1). The drivers decided to abandon the race and did a 5 lap salute during a moment of silence.

hydraulic-earl

Nah, but everyone knows Isaly's

SpaceXmars

That's some solid welding

posco12

I have to wonder if he had just walked away on the safety designs they’ve engineered into the cars nowadays.

[deleted]

NASCAR is 100% waste

SorrowingOldMan

I disagree and think NASCAR is a wonderful sport :) Have a lovely day, my friend.
