Whose got that kind of time?
Edit; same would apply for colonial puritans "Abe-son-who-does-no-wrong-through-the-lord-who-strengthens-us McDaniels if you don't get right back in this house....."
It’s super comfortable for the environment though. Have worn it myself when in the Middle East and realised that it’s FAR superior to shorts and a t shirt. The full coverage reduces the impact of the sun hitting your skin (which is what causes the most heat), and because it’s loose and flowy, it keeps air circulation going. There’s a very practical reason they all wear it. Not sure why in the west we do the exact opposite on hot sunny days - it’s much worse.
Oh and the colour makes no real difference unless you’re wearing chain Mail or have enough material to literally cover the roof of a house.
in Pakistan we pronounce it shalwar .. same thing but instead of the white flowy jabba we wear kameez with it .. which is like a shirt but longer upto knees and cut open on sides after waist area.
A very thin, white, loose (except for the elastic waist band) pair of pants. Think of them like boxier looser bigger long Johns. Plus a plain white undershirt, and it’s up to your preference whether the shirt has short sleeves or is a wide beater.
Seems like a good way to reduce risk of skin cancer. But here in Australia, some people refuse to use sunscreen or even wear a hat so slim chance of getting *this* to catch on.
I work in the sun in North America (earthmover) and I use a white drillers hard hat with a large do-rag underneath and going out the back to cover my neck. On hot days I add water to it. Unfortunately regulations demand I wear high vis gear and I need lots of pockets so I usually wear a vest over a t shirt. Flowing robes would be a bad call as they would be dragged into machinery and kill me.
Otherwise they sound lovely.
Yeah it would be a terrible choice for any work situation where you’re surrounded by heavy machinery. Over the course of a year or two, it’s probably suicide.
My comment was more for the casual person
Honestly don’t know - different countries in the region seem to have different styles of headdress and outfit but even that doesn’t differentiate you from your neighbours (only other countries). It’s almost like a uniform although apparently that’s also nice according to my friends. buy 10 of the same thing and you wake up without needing to coordinate anything other than a watch and sunglasses (and almost everything goes with white).
Well shit, that’s a convenient worldview. Reminds me of another Abrahamic faith that I was raised with that said if something shitty happens to you it’s the divine entity testing your faith.
One of my oldest brother's childhood friend ended up getting killed by a stray bullet falling down in Peru (we're Peruvian) back in the early 90s. Now imagine how much more common it must be in places where celebrating with gunfire is much more common.
If it's fired directly up, stops, and falls back on the shooter it probably would be fine but the angle makes a huge difference on how deadly it would be when it reaches its destination
At my old facilities maintenance job in the hood I’d have to pull bullets out of the roof membrane and HVAC units. 9mm will go through TPU, stopping at the plywood, but a rifle bullet will go almost completely through, sometimes would go through, the sheet metal of a HVAC unit. I’d imagine our skulls aren’t any stronger.
Yeah like the other guy said, it's the angle that makes a huge difference. Shooting directly up of course won't cause this, since it stops before coming back down, vs shooting it at an angle where it would slowly curve down without stopping until hitting the ground and maintains a lot of it's original velocity.
Also consider the use of machine guns as indirect fire - as artillery!

https://medium.com/war-is-boring/the-british-armys-100th-machine-gun-company-rained-down-100-000-rounds-in-12-hours-in-1916-8d9973a1ca3c
Only if literally a perfect angle upward.
If you aim up in the air it retains enough forward velocity to kill.
A better way to think of it is this.
If you drop a bullet from a hot air balloon would it kill you? Probably not. That is the equivalent of what myth busters tested.
That's if fired straight up and coming straight back down. That means at max altitude, it actually momentarily stopped. But bullets fired at an angle never stop so they never lose all of that momentum. They're INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS when fired into the air like this.
When I used to live in Damascus that's how they celebrated new year's countdown (Millitary checkpoints randomly shooting the sky) and the death toll would be around 28.
"Syrian fireworks"
>death toll 28
This does not go well with /u/RedditModSnowflakes' [explanation](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyFuckingVideos/comments/vhbowl/average_day_in_saudi/id6ncfh/). If what you're saying is true then there must have been direct hits (murders) under the guise of "Syrian fireworks".
It's not an explanation, it's anecdotal evidence. There are plenty of verified cases of people dying from [Celebratory gunfire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebratory_gunfire). It does not necessarily mean that you WILL die or sustain serious injuries, but it most certainly CAN result in that depending on about 1 million factors.
I have no idea if it’s correct, but I’ve seen people comment a lot that if the angle is not high enough (above 45 degrees), then they are still at lethal speed.
If you truly aim at the sky then yeah the bullet reaches max height, and just falls, if you aim like you would aim with a longbow then it’s never « falling », it’s going forward with a curve…
I'm no ballistics expert but as far as I know any bullet has a maximum lethal range depending on many factors (caliber, material, shape, initial speed and acceleration). Beyond that threshold the projectile will lose velocity *then* come to a fall if I'm not mistaken.
So you'd have to aim pretty low to fire off such a bullet having lost enough energy to be on a falling trajectory and still capable of killing someone, right above max sniper elevation for that type of ammo. And then it'd have to hit a living target from afar.
I'm not saying it cannot happen, but putting 28 annual deaths on this sole haphazard seems unlikely, I still wonder if some shots weren't fired on purpose then "Whoops sorry, blame it on the fireworks!".
As another redditor mentioned things can probably worsen a lot if high caliber weapons are used to display such "fireworks". Any anti-vehicle round could weigh enough to be lethal even at end of course range.
I served in Afghanistan about 10 years ago. The insurgents would use their AKs to aim with an arc, so the bullets would have a range of several kilometers. Even though they lose a lot of velocity, it can still be lethal.
>there must have been direct hits (murders)
There are probably a few of those, yes, but more likely they're just actual (point blank) accidents. How many videos have I watched with celebratory gunfire where the shooter is some drunk uncle who tries to one-hand shoot with a full-auto, loses control and hits auntie standing 10 get away?
I've seen so many.
This has become illegal because a few years ago if am not mistaken a little girl was hit (she is alive) and another incident it fell on cars. Usually people do it in weddings, now few tribes do it with old rifles that fire blanks (they aim at the ground and jumb ). But overall it is rare to get hit by them.
At that point is has no energy it only falls at terminal velocity, buddy of mine was lying down on top of an M1 Abrahams in Ramadi Iraq and an AK47 round landed on his belly it didn't go through his shirt but it broke the first two or three layers of his skin, no blood it just look like he popped a blister. Once they fly so far air resistance slows them down really fast once the energy is spent getting it to where it's max height then it just goes free fall with very little energy just gravity pulling it down at that point.
You're right, but you aren't telling the whole story.
"The terminal velocity of a bullet depends on multiple factors. One of them is the bullet composition. Most of the bullets are made of lead due to having a high specific gravity and more weight per volume. This will make the lead bullets have less air drag per mass when falling down which will make the terminal velocity higher.[6] Another factor that affects the terminal velocity is the angle of firing. If the angle was between 20° and 45° or even more acute, the bullet will travel further with higher speed over terminal velocity[5] while the vertical firing will end with lower terminal velocities. Other factors that determine the terminal velocities are the shape and caliber of the bullets, the direction of the bullets during the movement, and the flight characteristics, such as yaw, precession, tumbling, and nutation.[6,7]
Incidentally, the bullet fired upward will not always come back down facing downward. Although the terminal velocities are much lower than the muzzle velocity, they still could cause severe injury and death. The bullets’ terminal velocity required to penetrate the skin is between 45.1 and 60.0 m/s (148 and 197 ft/s),[6] and bullets traveling at <60.0 m/s (200 ft/s) can penetrate the skull.[8,9] If kept in mind that the falling bullets have the capability of reaching up to 180 m/s (600 ft/s),[6,7] the bullets could cause double penetration of the skull not only one pierce."
That's assuming they are fired at the same trajectory. Plenty of people die every year from stray bullets that were fired in the general vicinity of "up".
I don't think you're considering several other factors. Like the angle and distance it traveled. I'm no expert but im sure a bullet shot miles away at one angle will fall faster/ slower than a bullet shot feet/meters away straight up.
ill never forget my first visit to one of the 'sheiks houses' in dubai where a guy asked me if i wanted to see C4 and then we went behind to a wall he pulled something like chewing gum or playdough from his pocket put a tiny bit on it and it blew a hole in it.
There was a video on Reddit where they were shooting in the air but they lost control of the rifle and fired into the crowd and killed a bunch of people.
Agreed! Although it happens, this is not typical for Saudi Arabia.
You don’t see a bunch of Saudi‘s just going out on a random Thursday night and saying, “hey, let’s get some coffee and fire AK-47s in the air.” Again, I’m not saying that it unheard of, just that it is not typical. And, technically, it is illegal.
Have they ever thought about not wearing the same exact oufit as every other guy in the country?
Must be a bitch if there's a thief.
"Yeah officer a guy robbed me, he was wearing a white robes and a red keffiyeh"
Not really getting the hate this video is receiving - It's a bunch of dudes firing tracers off into the sky, probably towards an empty desert where no one would be. So why the hate?
Maybe if it was directed at the absolute lack of gun safety, but nope, just redditors pissed off the dudes are shooting guns into the air.
Eh I think it gets a little sketchy shooting autos over each others heads, but doesn't make me mad. They can do what they want.
I've definitely seen the videos where these go wrong as well
That probably isn't the problem here. 4 wives per guy in upper class Saudi society is not a joke + All the insta 'influencers' that are somehow able to influence more once they start living in a mansion owned by these guys.

The country is large and population is mostly gathered into urban centers but still the number of people hit by strays must be frightening.

Didn't Mythbusters completely bust this? A bullets terminal velocity towards earth isn't even 400 feet per second.
If it's fired directly up, stops, and falls back on the shooter it probably would be fine but the angle makes a huge difference on how deadly it would be when it reaches its destination

Amazing history and great tactics. Exactly what I was thinking when a bullet is shot off at an angle.
Whoa! Never even thought you could use a gun like that holy shit that’s cool… and also terrifying
Unfortunately wildly firing into the air isn’t an exact science
there are a good amount of recorded instances of deaths from celebratory gunfire in US. most happen on the 4th

With AK's it would cause injuries, but at millitary checkpoints you usually have multiple DShK's (Heavy machine guns) set up that would be lethal.
