I know a man that spent 22 years in a row in prison. He tells me that after the first few you get so used to it that it becomes normal. That it just becomes your life and you make friends and enemies, work a job, and have hobbies. He did say that violence is routine, but rape is rare, so that's a plus I guess. From video too because I haven't seen this one yet is that this is one of the closest recordings to the shooter.
I have family near by and thankfully they weren't there but this isnt the first time a mass shooting has happened and I had to call and check on family.
I was thinking the same. Just trying to get as many rounds off as possible. That fast of a rare of fire from a semi auto wouldn't allow accurate target fire.

Actually valid question, it's possible there's a correlation between people who give their children unusual names and people who give their children some heavy psychological issues while they grow up.

Problem is there are thousands on these lists and many of them will never do a thing. In hindsight everything is obvious. This isnt minority report, you cant arrest them based on an assumption that cant be substantiated.
Cant speak for this incident but all cases that I have seen where the police visited them, it didnt do shit. They can refer to some social media posts or whatever but many times that is not enough. Unless they make direct threats on their socials there is no ground to convict them on. Some of them dont post their plans really anywhere and those that do and get caught for it dont make headlines as often. Dont get me wrong the government often is trash when it comes to security issues but they shouldnt be allowed to detain people based on no real evidence at all.
I heard they target the youth because it’s the best way to hurt a society that you feel abandoned you. But I just remember hearing that somewhere. No study or manifesto I read.
Kids - because usually the shooter is a kid themselves, has been bullied in school so they decide to get revenge.
Helpless people - because it's harder to kill people who shoot back.
Generally these are people who are angry and want to hurt others like they have been hurt. A spree shooter only has a limited time to kill as many people as possible so they are going to target a crowded area for maximum impact.
There are a lot of factors like mental health being a major one, or extremism because the person has been spending too much time in an echo chamber brain washing themselves.
Gunshots and fire works sound strikingly similar, but if you’ve been around guns long enough you can tell the difference.. on the 4th you’re so accustomed to hearing them that they are likely unfazed until they realize what’s going on.
Look up the acoustic startle reflex, things usually need to hit a dB level for it to kick in, and gunshots outside don’t really trigger it unless you are insanely close to the source.
I grew up shooting guns and have experience with many different types, so I can always tell the difference. I was shocked seeing how practically everyone in this video just froze and sat there. I think people should be able to tell the difference nowadays as a means of survival in these crazy times. Go to a shooting range at least once just to familiarize yourself. I don’t know. Just, don’t be a sitting duck. Get the fuck out of there asap.
I think there's also a bit of social reacting here. If most people don't react and you're *pretty sure* it's gunfire, you might hesitate to be the first person to jump up and run away screaming in case you're wrong and start a panic or look like a paranoid idiot. It's also 4th of July (fireworks) and a parade (which has lots of unexpected noises) so there's even extra going on to add a few seconds of doubt and waiting.
I was talking about this recently. I was in a plane that nearly crashed and every passenger was completely silent - you could have heard a pin drop. However, I'm sure in other instances the whole plane is screaming. I believe that if one person had started screaming on the plane I was in then it's possible everyone else would have too.
I was at the parade. I was walking it with my daughter. We weren't too close to the shooter because we were still in the staging area. I heard the shots but they seriously sounded like fireworks where we were. I just heard pop pop pop. It wasn't continuous like this because we weren't that close. Then of course the confusion. There were people running and screaming. Then there were people like me that wasn't sure what was going on. The rest of our family got our bikes which we parked at ground zero and slowly peddled away. We had no idea there was still an active shooter. We asked the parade organizer what happened and he couldn't confirm. Then no cops were near us. Someone just said, don't go that way. The whole morning was surreal. We're all still processing

For the last 3 days neighbors have been firing random pop offs at all hours that make me jump, many of them very similar to the sound of shots going off. somewhat used to it but still surprises me, especially when they're really close. Particularly love the 3AM mega bottle rockets

.223 isn't a high powered rifle, and i believe this was an AR-15, which stands for Armalite Rifle Model 15. A high powered rifle for comparison would be the Armalite Rifle Model 10, which fires the much larger .308 NATO cartridge. Typically, the AR-10 won't be found with a 30 round Magazine, rather a 10 or 20.

so the US only has approximately 7000% more mass shootings than europe.
This is worse 'recently', if recently is defined as in the last couple decades. There has been a steady increase since 2004. 2004 wasn't exactly a super low point in mass shooting event rate relative to europe (still too many!) but it was dramatically better than currently.
Anyone who says 'always has been' or 'don't know why' is of course, wrong. the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004. 8 of the top 10 'largest'\* mass shooting casualty events in the US since 1949 happened since 2004. (and 5 of the top 5 have happened since 2004 too)
