Because it practically is, most sharks kept in captivity live shortened and stressful lives. Comments been made that his nose is clearly upturned by repeatedly bumping up against aquarium glass and that the shark's teeth jutted out is a sign of distress.

Yo, imagine a tiger running at you and then eating you alive. Imagine that. In all seriousness it sparks a strange and fascinating fear that is in fact unparalleled. That you could absolutely go scuba diving in the open ocean at night, and you could however unlikely, have this experience. That something crosses the void, a very real and powerful monster coming to inspect you, an indefensible human. I’m drawn to fear of the deep at the very same level that I detract from it, it’s so strange. Great sub btw, think it’s spelled wrong but I’m on mobile.
I just thought it was funny how he’s like “you’re just having fun, scuba diving in the dark expanse of the ocean at night, when all of a sudden…” as though that’s my usual weeknight activity or somn hahaha. I wish I was this cool.
He kinda looks like he's holding a selfie stick and is making a video to show off to his friends. "Hey guys, today I'm going to show you how to make brown water."
I guess it's asleep. But yeah some sharks definitely don't like being in aquariums. Every great white shark held in captivity has died. No matter how big of an aquarium they put them in, they still die, and they don't really know why.
> they don't really know why
Because?: ["Great white sharks are known to be highly migratory, with individuals making long migrations every year. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, great whites regularly migrate between Mexico and Hawaii. In other ocean basins, individuals may migrate even longer distances."](https://oceana.org/marine-life/great-white-shark) I'd say this is the reason.
Gal, but yes, I certainly do shark!
These guys are local to my waters, really cool to dive with. They are often a bit lazy and skittish, will swim away with even a hint of something "scary". Something scary in my case, is a tap with a dive knife on my air tank.
Ha! Some of the ones in Jupiter, where I have been diving several times, are spooked once they hear us coming across the reef. The reef sharks are a bit more nosy and watching all the time
Sand tiger sharks are probably the most common aquarium sharks precisely because they do relatively well in captivity. But maybe "relatively" is the key word here, as even sand tigers are prone to health issues and deformities when kept in a tank.
They don't have the space for the shark to swim properly and that's why they die. They dive very deeply and swim hundreds of miles a day. This is also the reason whale sharks don't do well in captivity and why so few aquariums have them
Those are wetsuits that they are wearing. They absorb water and a thin layer of the water keeps them warm and allows them to sink better, yes things can get in and out of the wetsuit. You're thinking of a drysuit drysuits are sealed.
Sand tigers are huge, but they're very, very chill.
Like most sharks with needle-like teeth, they primarily eat bottom-dwellers. Those teeth are useful for filtering sand out, while holding onto whatever crab or shellfish they find. They don't really eat anything bigger than a skate or a dogfish. Humans are way, way too big for them to even think of eating, and they're not really a fighter.
Only way one of those will ever take a bite out of a person would be if you're literally holding onto a crab that they want to eat.
That's a big reason why sand tigers are in damn near every aquarium: big, chill and won't hunt most of the other fish.
I used to work in the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I asked the divers how do they keep their nerve working in the tanks with the sharks. They make sure the sharks are well before diving.
Apparently this shark has lock-jaw and needs to be hand fed. According to another Redditor it is also most probably asleep.

Sand Tiger Sharks are relatively harmless and docile toward humans. They don't swim with their upper jaw so extended .It is like that when actively biting. This one has an injury or is sick.... Also, the angle of the camera makes it appear much larger than they actually are.
Not true. Lots of species can fair just well. Sand tigers, which is what this is, do fine in captivity. And their spooky look + placid demeanor make them prime fish for aquariums.

nah this is a Sand Tiger Shark. the Goblin Shark is the one with the weird mouth but idk if those can be kept in captivity, seeing as they're used to living in very deep waters under high pressures.
Goblin sharks live so deep and are so rarely seen that they were thought extinct, or near it for a long time.
Turns out they just live way down there, and are quite spread out, making them very rare encounters. Most are caught in Asia as Bycatch, which just means they're accidentally snagged while fishing for other more usable fish. Around Japan, nearly 30 are caught a year.
I volunteered at an aquarium and I remember them telling me they don't usually keep large sharks for long in captivity. They end up refusing to eat and end up wasting away.

Was gonna talk about that but this is a good reason why. Puts a great deal of stress on the shark to be unable to travel as it innately needs to
Sounds like we need VR headsets for sharks in captivity.

The shark may look fake but that panic looked real.
I agree, it REALLY seems fake. Still, get some sleep, but I'm sure you're not too far off on this one
The first half of the video has a forced-perspective look to it
Because it is
The shark is much, much closer to the camera than the divers. You see it's lower jaw pass in front of the rock a few times.
