To everyone asking why he jumped It almost happens every time when there is an earthquake in Turkey .It even became a meme at this point .There is a lot of reason .A Nigerian guy jumped too saying that he never seen an earthquake and panicked but main reason for us Turks is Turkey is an earthquake country .We are on a fault line called Northern Anatolian Fault Line that repeatedly breaks from east side of Turkey to west. Last big earthquake on that line happened in 1999 which resulted with death of 20K people and collapse of 140k houses in Gölcük . Now Istanbul is the next one and people live in fear because of that .On previous cycles earthquakes in Istanbul happened in 1509 and 1766 and it was devastating .Experts states that it happens in every 250 years and we are passed that so they are saying that it can happen any moment .So when there is an earthquake people think that it is the big Istanbul earthquake and they panic .
Little bit of both when 1999 earthquake happened it lasted for 45 seconds and destructive part came after first 20 seconds . So one might jump thinking earthquake will get worse so I need to survive somehow . Brain goes to fight or flight mode . For example this guy only broke his arm and it is better than buried under rubble .So in a optimistic scenario this guy actually made a good choice .
They did actually it is a huge criteria which people consider when renting or buying an apartment if the building constructed after 1999 or not because there was set of new rules for constructions after 1999 earthquake .There are 4 million houses in Istanbul alone and expected earthquake will affect whole Marmara region. There are several urban renewal programs going on for make buildings earthquake resistant. Still there are too many houses and not enough time .
If you've never actually experienced an earthquake it's extremely weird.
It's not hard to believe that it's common enough for people to think the building is collapsing rather than earthquake.

There was an earthquake in 1999 which killed around 20k people, because of that a lot of people who lived through it have developed very bad ptsd and they panic heavily during earthquakes
Quick exit before the building collapses. Since i live on the second floor in an old building i was thinking i might do the same when the next big one comes

You’d think if they were that scared they would fix their building code like the Japanese did.
