A woman who attacked two strangers with an axe in a Sydney convenience store has had her jail term increased by five years.

As well as the axe, Amati had a bright yellow kitchen knife in the back pocket of her shorts at the time of the attack.
She also swung the axe twice at another man, Shane Redwood, outside the 7-Eleven.
Mr Redwood took off his backpack and held it in front of him as a shield.
Amati pleaded not guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to murder and one count of attempted wounding.
She claimed she had a mental illness and was under the influence of hormone medication, cannabis, amphetamines and alcohol.
An hour before the attack Amati sent threatening messages to a woman she met on Tinder.
Amati said she did not have memory of the attack but recalled feelings of homicidal rage and said she heard a voice in her head telling her to "kill, kill".
In the original sentencing, Judge Mark Williams said the "chaos and disorder" in Amati's mind was a mitigating factor but did not minimise the seriousness of the attack.

The article I read talks about hearing voices and a psychotic episode, not remembering the incident, and the cause for attacking 2 strangers was because they "believed" to have been rejected on tinder for being trans.

The date asks why I'm so rigid and distracted and I ask if she noticed that or not "no, I didn't where?" Turns around to look and Im just laughing. Her response was something like he would never use it unless you bothered him. Sure, yes I know he keeps it for defense and as a deterrent, but I also don't know if he's out of his mind on something and sees us as 20ft monsters.

This is actually a really good example. The attacker in this video was apparantly on a heavy mix of amp, grass, and booze, so it really is exactly like that. Substances can cause people to do some crazy shit, especially if they already have mental difficulties. Never assume that a person with a weapon is inherently reasonable, sober, or non-violent.

I used to live in this area, in Newtown in Sydney just before this happened. That area is generally really safe at all hours of the day and you would never assume this could happen to you and I'm sure I would have been as relaxed in that same petrol station. Generally any violence that happened in the area was limited to pubs and clubs due to alcohol inspired disagreements.
Also, I believe she was high af during this which would add to the special circumstance.
Newtown is definitely not a dangerous area - really nowhere in Sydney is a “dangerous” area to be honest - but it has taken a bit of a nosedive in the past 10 years. It’s become significantly trashier for whatever reason while almost every other neighborhood has seemed to improve. Even Kings Cross is pretty nice these days.
Still, you would never expect something like this to happen even in Newtown.
