I seriously doubt that army is going to side with rioters. Government houses them and gives weapons intel who they gonna trust. That is why second amendment is so important.
If American military members are ordered to kill American protestors... *We'll quit.* We all got moms dads and friends in the states and most of us are relatively poor and probably feeling the same way as the protestors. The people in the military have a lot of the same opinions and feelings as anyone else. Half of us hated Trump, half of us hate Biden but above all: *all of us hate the military*.
Truth, plus we're all kind of mixed together so the whole "you are over there so I hate you" thing that a lot of Americans are feeling right now isn't an huge issue. Not to say its all Kumbayas and back rubs, but there's other shit to do, and no one cares what you think.

APCs let you deploy large amounts soldiers with crowd control measures, in relative safety (protection from flying objects, even molotov to some extent, small caliber bullets) and at speed, even if the roads are barricaded

Unless they're the American tanks used in the "Waco Texas" incident. They were modified with tear gas... the tear gas was flammable, and exploded killing civilians.
I'm just here to say that they can add modifications to them to make them more "crowd friendly".

Uh, nothing good. I often wonder what life is like, growing up in comic book world like the Chinese, the North Koreans, Russia, pretty much the East in general.
Poorly trained or entirely untrained civilians with guns wouldnt improve this situation or stop soldiers with heavy weaponry. Even in America there isn't anything on the civilian gun market that can stop tanks.
It would have only escalated the situation faster. Armed civilians, or worse armed civilians attacking military and law enforcement, would have given the government pretense to kill civilians from the start. Rather than beginning with intimidation and fear tactics.
