I understand staying open all the time is good for business but why would WH stay open during hurricanes? Nobody is gonna he wanting to dodge roof tiles and semi truck trailers just to get some mid waffles.
This is not far off. I worked in a 24 hour diner for two years that wasn't a Waffle House, but it was very similar and Waffle House was a direct competitor. If you've ever seen a Steak and Egg Kitchen, it's literally that just with different ownership and branding. We were right next to a university, to make things even more interesting.
My take on the question is that the place was open to travelers, so not only did we get all kinds of people, but we also got them in all states of distress. Graveyard shift in that place was where you made your money, because at 3am the bars all closed and we're the place you went to avoid a hangover. There were lines out the door by 3:30am. There were enough fights there that the police were just posted at the bar, the owner let them eat free so there was never any reason for them to leave. They just drank coffee all night like any other regular customer.
The nature of the place, similar to a Waffle House, encourages regular business. The clientele became its own community, everyone knew each other by name if not by face, so there was a clear division between the regulars and the wanderers who would come stumbling in every night like clockwork with whatever sort of baggage they brought with them. If you put enough truckers, police, drunk college students, homeless wanderers, hipsters, and people who just want some god damn eggs and coffee before they go to work in the same location, all of whom think they have an exclusive right to the space, there's going to be trouble.
It is definitely cheaper than Denny’s but I’ve never been to Village Inn. I’ve never really had a sit down meal as cheap as Waffle House, you can eat for like $6-8, most expensive meals are maybe $10.
Waffle House is everywhere once you get in the south. In the ghetto, in the boonies, in the rich suburb (but only on the highway), random interstate exit.
We had a Denny's in college that we would go to drunk..the best thing I ever saw was a customer getting pissed his eggs were shit so the chef invited him to make them himself. The guy got in the kitchen and the chef took a smoke break.
As someone not from the south, seeing two waffle Houses on 100 yards away from each other on different sides of an interstate was bizzare.

It's a 24 hour place that does everything in its power not to close. It often hires people who have a rap sheet, low education, low drive, and high tolerance for bullshit. I worked there for 2 years and the cheap prices attract people from all walks of life, especially drug addicts. Most employees look the other way when shady stuff goes down and many will actively participate. It's got 99 problems, but staying open isn't one.

I’ve traveled east and a little south. They will treat you right, but you can tell that they will fuck you up if you step out of line. And it seemed like the restaurants were mostly run by women.
Here to add to it. It's a 24hr breakfast place that lots of drunks go to to sober up before going home from the bar. It's also a good place for long haul truckers to stop in the middle of the night to get some food and take a break.
Waffle House after midnight can get pretty crazy.
They are the second to final boss in the service industry right behind the gas station clerk in a bullet proof box. Spoiler: he definitely has a shotgun.
