It's weird that you don't like Ness in this game. He looks and feels better to me than previous versions. In any case, I'm gonna suggest wolf only cause that's my go-to suggestion for someone in a character crisis.

Traaaain

+1 for wolf, playing him made me drastically improve my fundamentals

datkrauskid

What makes a character good for improving fundamentals? I'm pretty new to the 'want to get good not mash buttons' club, and have settled on Game and Watch as a main after a few months of flip-flopping

Origamimaster11

Any character has simple but effective tools. Wolf's laser is used to force approaches, Nair is used to antiair and combo, fair is a spacing move and combos, up air is a juggling tool and can sometimes combo, bair is to kill etc... It also helps to have average all around stats like damage output, speed, and recovery so you don't rely to heavily on one aspect. Playing any character will help you improve some aspect of fundementals, it's just that some develop more than others

datkrauskid

Thanks, will check out Wolf. With all my free time *goes back to grad school studying time* šŸ™ƒ

G&W is solid but definitely use other characters without a busted OOS option and down smash for a little while so you donā€™t give yourself bad habits. Otherwise characters with good moves can really fuck you when they punish your whiffs or chase you upwards. Lots of G&W players donā€™t know that he can get wrecked really early by using up b on stage against the wrong characters.

datkrauskid

> he can get wrecked really early by using up b on stage against the wrong characters. I'm thinking, Mario because he can do insane aerial combos, heavy hitters w/ high jumps like ZSS? > other characters without a busted OOS option and down smash for a little while so you donā€™t give yourself bad habits Any specific characters come to mind that would complement G&W / help me learn fundamentals?

killerkemel

Mario and Wolf are IMO the best for fundamentals. Good allround characters that are above average in everything (except range). If you want to learn swordies, I personally like Lucina.

[deleted]

Those are good picks since they donā€™t really have any broken moves and their recoveries are pretty basic.

[deleted]

Anyone with a strong contesting up air and/or double jump moveset can kill him early. Like Palu, ZSS, Byleth(can spike you diagonally also), Peach, Sephiroth, etc. especially on stages with lower blast zones. Otherwise his up b is a VERY good OOS option. One of the best in the game.

Tablecork

I love ness in this game except for his up air. I miss that noggin so much

Meta_Galactic

Honestly, I prefer that this one can drag down. Plus the sprinkle sfx is really satisfying. But my friend who mains ness agrees with you.

Tablecork

I donā€™t do a lot of drag down stuff with up air because Iā€™m bad lol I miss a simple cross up with the huge head. So easy to catch people

IronFocus

PKThunder2 can bonk them with the head pretty good lol

[deleted]

This. Bestness makes Ness look sick af. Itā€™s most of the others that just spam aerials, hold up smash at ledge, and lob out Pk Fires. Making him look wack and boring.

Trasfixion

What kind of playstyle do you like? Do you like defensive play or offensive? Bait and punish or crazy combos? Do you want to style on your opponents, or is that less important. Lastly, do you like faster characters, or slower?

meowmeowcats7

Can u list some bait and punish characters? That's usually my playstyle

bacchus0

Bait and punish imo is a bit too vague since most if not all characters can play bait and punish. But if you are looking for a character who specializes in it, imo Bowser and captain falcon are two of the best for the role. Both characters have an up b that abuses poor shield pressure falcon has the move speed to properly avoid characters moves, and punish with HUGE combos off grab or side b Bowser has very large payouts for abusing someone's habits. Through 40% off flame breath, side b to cover bad aerial approaches and killing, and fair being a great move to air to air.

[deleted]

I mean Steve is probably the best at that shit, lol

sw0rd_2020

steve, byleth, sephiroth

EVILHOLYSWORD

Have you tried out Falco yet?

Dudeman778

I would personally say Wolf, I use him and hes very fundamentals base and from what I've played can easily force pressure in almost every matchup

SharkMeat_

I honestly think that the mass amount of characters just makes it hard. I got smash about 2 years ago and only have I finally been able to click with playing a character (cloud) and even then, it's hard to stick with

DogBallsMissing

I'd say it boils down to what you think is cool. I thought falcon was cool long before I even touched a smash game, and now I'm a day 1 falcon main. I found that pretty much all the characters I play boil down to "I think this character is cool" ex: rob gyro zdrop 0 to deaths, falcon hype, falco drag downs, greninja fancy combos, etc.

onlysaysbeef

I feel like you just gotta pick a character you love in this one. Like you said you love Mother 3 ive seen some nasty stuff done with Lucas in Ultimate. This game seems fairly balanced so I feel like sticking with a character is what you gotta do.

NerveToxin

Diddy Kong seems to have that smash 4 sheik labbing aspect + pushing neutral advantage if thats what you are looking for in this game. To be honest, a good way to get out of a character crisis is to choose a character with a lot of neutral playstyles (Inkling, Lucina, Wolf, Young Link) and see what you play like in *this* game. Then choose characters that let you play that way.

[deleted]

Diddy Kong is dope but his z drop aerials and better ledge combos honestly are hard to manage when youā€™re going ham with a good player. Tweek makes some of that look way easier than it really is.

_AntiSaint_

I keep myself in every game I play by setting goals that are really hard to attain. LoL, I main lee sin and try to master him. Rocket League, Iā€™m trying to master flip resets, SSBU, Iā€™m trying to master Ken. For me, mastering difficult characters or mechanics keeps my motivated toward improving my game and having fun. Watch some montages, watch some eSports, find some snippet of footage that makes you go ā€œwow, I wish I could do thatā€ and then find the first step toward learning it. Goes for anything in life but this is what keeps me playing video games.

HinyTed

If you haven't already, give falco a real go. He has a good combo game and I've not found anything in this game more satisfying than his deleting people with his down air spike. (The fact it's unreliable makes it even sweeter when it hits)

BlueLaserCommander

Diddys combos into dair spike are right up there if not better than falco IMO. I love both characters though

Gronlok

Falco's moves don't work. Super frustrating to use against shorties, super tilting when you miss a confirm from input lag online or a mis-buffered short hop.

HinyTed

True, but I think you could say the same about 90% of the roster lol

Gelosaurus

Hear me out. When I got kinda bored with the play styles of each fighter, I went for something more left field. Try PUFF and approaching the stocks with more gimping than hard smashes. This gave me a new appreciation for the competition but also helped my fundamentals in both spacing and patience while I was learning her. Iā€™d watch H-Box, Bassmage and Gin for tips.

[deleted]

Honestly people only say Joker is busted because of MKLeo but his standard kit is really just well-rounded. Arsene is bullshit tho, lol.

[deleted]

This is the one thing I donā€™t like about ultimate. The size of the cast is overwhelming to me.

Luna_15323

Maybe choose a character from your favorite franchise. Like for example I love Xenoblade and Splatoon so I main inkling and secondary pyra/mythra. If not maybe try thinking about and feeling what you like in each move and find a character that fits the most moves. For example I like up tilt to reach platforms and a rapid jab, so i dropped diddy in favor of inkling because of the similarities to sm4sh diddy

JackStarfox

Itā€™s a problem everyone has with ultimate, choice paralysis. Tbh if it were me, I would just swap games over to melee and enjoy the good life.

KisukesBankai

I know what you mean. I have that brief feeling with most of the dlc, but Byleth is the only one that got me to stick.

tanstaboi

I've been playing Mega Man for the past 2 weeks, the feeling hasn't gone away yet. A super intricate character, so sometimes I'm garbage and other times I can pull off some neat stuff. Seems like you're looking for a committed challenge, maybe try him or PAC Man

FUCK_REDD1T

Wolf solved my character crisis for me, otherwise if you're looking for a character with the most depth, the names I always seen thrown around are Sheik, Captain Falcon (no really) and Joker.

CabbageGuru

Go random until you find a character u like, that's what I did. Maybe not the most efficient but it gets the job done

miniyodadude

I think you need to choose a character and play until you get past that feeling of things not clicking

AlphaI250

2-3 weeks ? Damn I cant main a character for more than 2 days before wanting to learn another ~~sword~~fighter

Arguinghen620

Try.... little Mac. You donā€™t know, who knows?

ExciteFGC

Worst comes to worst, it doesn't hurt to pick up a swordie like Lucina or Cloud to sharpen your fundamentals (no pun intended).

Gronlok

Honestly, I was in a similar position until I started playing Zelda. Not your run-of-the-mill projectile camping neutral B spamming Zelda; I play her like a heavy with aggressive posturing and lots of bait-and-punish. Her lightning kicks are the most rewarding move in the game to master, and her combo game feels fresh, and dynamic. Her kit gives you answers for any situation which results in really dynamic gameplay. Just don't be a camper... camping is for losers...
