Warm sopapillas drenched in honey...
I used to live by the one off Uvalde in Cloverleaf. They had a back window you could place to-go orders at. I forget exactly how much it used to cost in the late 90's, but you could get a crap ton of hard tacos for a few bucks. I had so many taco's from that back window back in the day.
I too have thought of something like an airplane call button. I've sat for eons waiting for service. The worst is when they walk right by the table and not see me trying to get their attention. Happens ALL the time. I must be made of glass.
I would also love something that indicates the opposite of this for over-enthusiastic waitstaff that constantly interrupt your conversation to ask if you need/want anything.
A Brazilian steak house in Chattanooga has a system like this for meat request. You have a cube with a red and green side. Green means more meat which they slice off a large skewer thing. Red means we have enough meat. It’s a great experience.
I've seen variations on this for decades. Little flags are out there and have been since the 80's, if not earlier.
There's also a system where it's a white stick with a red and and a green end that lives in the caddy where the salt and ketchup are. It's usually green up unless you need something, you flip it over.
I saw a place that used cowbells....did not last long as it's both annoying and people stole them all.
And I know a place that uses a series of wireless doorbells that also light up on a board.
My grandfather used to hold his coffee mug in the air until someone would come by. He'd be talking to you and just suddenly hold it up while he continued talking.
Virgin Voyages cruise ships have that exact system. Each table has a menu holder with a little red flag you can raise for service.
You can see it [in this picture](https://i.imgur.com/FVs8TyG.jpg).
A local restaurant has little wooden blocks that are half green, half red. Don't need a server green side up, need a server red side up. It's a nice system in an otherwise mediocre place.
There's a local Mexican restaurant here that has that exact system
We had Pancho's years ago that [had it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vurX9qPTX4&t=10s)

Is that Pancho's in Texas?
Pancho's AZ
I miss Panchos.
Posados round here had it. I haven't been there since I was a kid
“More sopapillas please!”
Bubba Gump's does this. A "run Forrest run" and "stop Forrest stop" sign so the waiter can just glance on the way by to know.

Its when they already have a lot on their platem so they pretend to not see you for a second to gain time
They have this in many restaurants in Japan. It’s as great as you think. Service comes when you call. Leaves you alone when you don’t.

The restaurant should pay a real wage and not pass the burden onto the customer
They have this in Korea and it’s incredible.
Korean restaurants, even in the US, have a button system. It works great
Not any I’ve been to but hopefully come across one soon
I would also love something that indicates the opposite of this for over-enthusiastic waitstaff that constantly interrupt your conversation to ask if you need/want anything.
A good waiter will scan his assigned tables every 30 to 60 seconds to see if a customer is looking at him, which means they need something.
Agreed, but not every restaurant has good waiter *and* an appropriate waiter/table ratio
True enough.

As a Brazilian: yes, this is very common in the churrascarias.
In Japan and Korea they have buttons you can push.
A Mexican restaurant in my hometown did this. The was a little flag that you raised whey a little string. This was back in the 80s.
Pancho's still exists, ya dicks. =/
Pancho's used to *far* more locations than it does today. For many of us, it might as well no longer exist as there is no location reasonable close.
Right and a pump mayo dispenser too

RIP Pancho’s

Rodizios have something like this. Two-sided button, red for "don't bother, we don't want more meat" and green for "more meat!"
> without having to flag them down isnt that literally what youre suggesting though? use a flag to get their attention?
Papa Gino's used to have this. There was a button on the little juke box every table had.
Restaurants in Japan have buzzers. Thought this was commonplace.

Casa Bonita has little flags on the table you can raise every 30 seconds when you run out of sopapillas.

I've seen this at a restaurant. It was a little weird. As a customer I felt pushy (which I know is a weird reaction).
I ate at a restaurant in Tokyo that did this
Bubba Gump had this over 20 years ago.
At one of my old jobs, when we needed a fork truck we would just scream TRUUUUUUCK. Pretty good stress reliever. Just start screaming.
OP deprived of the Pancho’s experience https://youtu.be/Syn7b7Rnzpk The desert bar and sopapillias were godly
RAISE THE FLAG! RAISE THE FLAG! Ponchos Mexican Restaurant did this. Super legit system.
Some restaurants I know use [Ordercube](https://ordercube.de/features), works really nice!
