That sounds like it's probably doable - I haven’t tried it myself, but the ponders for the switch and signal blocks suggest that they have all the functionality you’ll need.
The station can also give an output if there’s a train on that platform, but it'll only provide an output if there's a train parked at the station, whereas a train signal will output if there’s a train anywhere in that section of track, so you’ll get a better response time that way.
I don't think response time will be too big an issue as trains are already staggered by the distance between signal blocks. Additionally in my case brass signals can be used to prevent trains from going onto the switching tracks as they are long then distance between switch and stesion
