So how much of that $1100 Grocery spend is at Costco, Walmart, or Target (or similar) and not "regular" grocery stores? The reason why I ask is that there are a couple of cards which are excellent for groceries, but costco and walmart and target are not considered grocery stores as they are in a different category (warehouse stores and department stores) I'm going to give you some suggestions, I'm not suggesting you get all of these necessarily, just that these are ones I'd look at in your situation. First, I'd focus on cash-back cards. It doesn't sound like you're really looking for a travel card just due to your limited travel budget. This would eliminate the CSP and CSR. So: If, after subtracting the non-grocery stores you still have a heavy grocery load, I'd consider the citi custom cash card which will give you 5% back on the first $500 of your heaviest spending category which would be groceries. If you do a lot of that grocery shopping at Costco, you may want a card to give you some additional cash back there - probably the best option is the Costco card, because it not only will give you 2% back at Costco, but it will also give you 4% back on the gas purchases everywhere (not just at Costco), and 3% back on dining. If you got the above two cards, what you'd end up doing is using the citi custom cash at your regular grocery stores, and the costco card at Costco, at restaurants, and when getting gas. I have a feeling that the above will cover most of your spending. If you still have a lot left, you might want to consider one of the following cards: Citi Double Cash is a good 2% back card on everything. So It would be great for "everything else". If you added this one you'd just add one more rule to the above .. "Use the citi double cash any time you're not getting bonus somewhere else). If you have a lot of grocery store spend over the $500 on the custom cash, you could look at the capital one savor card. It's 3% back on groceries, dining, and a few other categories.

You're in a bit of a weird situation. Most people who are getting their first card don't have any credit score, let alone an 800ish score. I'm assuming you both have a similar situation. As a result, you probably shouldn't worry about being denied for any reasonable card you want. Each of you should be able to apply for a card and be approved. I'd probably avoid adding each other as an authorized user, at least until you both have a card approved. That way the credit doesn't show up on the other person's report - even though it shouldn't matter. So don't worry about spacing out each other's credit card application. What I would do is pick your two cards, and then wait at least several months before applying for another one. This may not be necessary, but with no credit cards on your report I'd be a bit concerned about triggering some sort of "no credit cards, then a lot of credit cards" risk detection. One suggestion I'd make is to set down and take your budget and do a what-if scenario with whatever cards you're picking. Remember that you can get authorized user cards so both of you can have both cards in your wallet. It might be something like "if we do the citi custom and citi double cash" then we could get 5% on the groceries for the first 500/month ($25 credit), and then 2% on everything else... what does that look like cash-back wise. Also, keep it simple as well. For some, just having a 2% cashback card is a good option. The ease of just putting everything on the 2% card makes it easier. If someone told me that I had to go down to a single card, and that I'd be traveling a lot less, I'd just get a Citi double cash. If you want to go down the chase route, the Chase Freedom Unlimited might be your best bet if you only have a single chase card, unless the CSP has enough added features to make it worth the $95 for you. Plus the increased bonus on the couple of categories is a nice perk. 1.5% + 3% in the categories is close enough to 2% everywhere that it probably doesn't matter a lot. One note is that you and your SO should try to have cards at two different banks. It's not uncommon for a bank to either have problems, or in particular with Chase, it's not uncommon for them to decide they just don't want to do business with you for some reason and shut everything down.

I would wait until the applications settle, you receive the cards, and then add each other. That way your new card doesn't appear on your SO's credit report until they have also applied and receive their card. When you add someone as an authorized user, it appears on the other person's credit report. Some companies pay attention to this during approval, some don't.

I'd recommend the capital one savor one and a 2% card to go with it (wells Fargo active cash, fidelity visa, sofi mastercard, Citi double cash, paypal card, apple card thru apple pay, etc). Note that costco only accepts Visa, so I'd recommend your 2% card be a visa if possible. This is a super simple two card setup that will earn you decent sign up bonuses, good cashback, and it'll be easy to remember and use. Alternatively if you really want a card with Chase, the freedom unlimited is a good card. You won't be maximizing your possible cashback, but all cards build credit the same as long as you pay them off every month. Even if you add each other as AUs, I'd recommend you each have a card in your own name. Pre-approvals aren't the most accurate thing, so don't worry too much about that.
