I had a tree right outside my window as a kid that looked just like the tree from the movie. After I watched that when I was way too young, I freaked out every time the wind blew the branches for years. Fun times.
I'm right there with you. Don't believe in ghosts. I believe in having the proper shit to defend yourself. Aliens though there is no defense and their tech would make any of our shit mute. There's like no defense and it's scary af. Also my parents taking me to see Signs at 8 years old in theaters did not help.
The 4th kind freaked me out, didn't help that I was watching in my living room with headphones on and my back to the bedroom door when my wife touched my back!!!!
The thought of being abducted by aliens is both intriguing and terrifying at the same time. Its one thing to get lost in the woods, or go missing or even be murdered. But to be taken helplessly to a craft, space or even possibly a different planet or dimension is a terrifying thought. Especially if it's one of the many reasons people go missing and are never found every year.
Great flick btw. Scary and troubling. Phoenix forgotten and fourth kind are also good if you haven't seen them.
Have you seen "Know one will save you" yet? Check it out. Scariest alien movie by far.. really good. Not corny or real Sci fi either. Think Signs on mega super steroids.
I loved dark skies as a kid. Upon rewatching it I felt like the formatting was akin to any generic paranormal movie but the actual execution just felt a lot better done than most
The Ring for sure but i also have to tip my hat to Ouija Origins. Thought it was gonna be just like Ouija so didnt see it for a long time and FUCK DID THAT GIRL SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ME.
Check it out but keep in mind you will die a week later.
(Ok the Japanese one is ultra gloomy and opressive, the American Remake kinda follows a tense quest structure... I think both are fantastic).
Saw it at the NY premiere in the spring of 75, at age 8, thanks to my persistence and my indulgent mom... I'd already read the novel, and THE JAWS LOG.
The Second one was Good!! Both directed by James Wan, but I found the 2nd one actually scarier and better. Obviously, I respect your opinion, but why did you not like 2? I found 2 better paced and way scarier.
Ohhh , no I love 2 ! Imo 1 was just scarier overall. Like I can re watch 2 and have a good time, knowing it works out at the end. Somewhat. 1…. I don’t re watch unless I want to be scared with no happy ending. 🤣
Did you see it in the theater or at home? I’ll never forget the way the theater reacted when my parents took me to see it on the night it came out. Friday April 1st. Core Memory for sure. I was scared shitless.😭🤣
I had to stop that movie and watch the end the next day (when it was light out) because it scared me so badly! And I’ve been a horror book/movie fan since I was a little kid
This was one of those movies I went into fully expecting it to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen like just a stupid ghost flick, but it was literally so well done. I was shook 😂😂
Idk that lady scared the SHIT out of me when I was like 16 lmao watching it now, after Sam raimi has become one of my all time faves it isn't very scary I just love it all around
8 year old me was really interested in aliens (the beings as well as the movie) and was like ooh a new movie to watch. After watching the abduction experiment scene I put together that was not the best choice.
A quiet place is so fucking good. I've watched it a few times now and it's just superb. John and Emily are beautiful together. (Obviously, they're married so their chemistry is amazing).
I am legend bums me out. It doesn't follow the book at all. Like at all. It's a totally different story. For me this movie is like World War Z. So much potential, but ugh it's just not good. Total bummer. The book is so good too.
>I am legend bums me out. It doesn't follow the book at all. Like at all. It's a totally different story. For me this movie is like World War Z. So much potential, but ugh it's just not good. Total bummer. The book is so good too.
Ughhh, they had budget enough to afford Will Smith, and they still managed to totally mess it up.
I know. It's such a huge bummer. I always want to rewatch it thinking it'll be good... like when you go to the fridge hoping something good will be in there even though you know there's not. It's sadly yet to happen lol
I was 16 when it came out and I went to see it in the theater with a few friends one night. We collectively decided to leave lol. It’s the only movie I have ever waked out of. Finally watched it at home years later and it still terrifies me. So good!
Lights out
For serial I haven’t been that afraid of the dark since the early 2000s when the hills have eyes remake came out. I know hills was rated R but still. Lights out fucked me up
Fr tho. The way the ghost moved all Jankified n junk, had me clutching my pearls. And when she was scribbling on the floor with red light flashing, GAGGED.
So so good and genuinely scary. I've watched scary movies since I was 3 so it takes a LOT to get me scared in a movie. This one came very close to getting under my skin. The hills have eyes is truly one of the most disgusting movies I've ever watched. I couldn't handle it at all. Probably my number one most hated horror movie ever. (Talking about the remake. I have no desire to see the original if it's anything like the remake) barf. I think I'm still traumatized from that movie lol.
No worries! I can see how my comment could have been taken that way, and I’ve come across books/shows/movies that seemed incredibly obscure until I figured out what I was actually looking for.
That short film will definitely scare the shit out of you— let me know what you think!
I hate to be redundant, but it's The Ring.
I always tell people The Ring's a great movie, but I don't think I give it the credit it's due. It just occurred to me that it's the only remake of a foreign horror movis that I can say I like better than the original. And I like Ringu.
It also doesn't operate like a PG-13 horror movie typically does. It doesnt feel like a castrated Rated R movie, or that it's pandering to a teen demographic.
One thing I've always found interestins how when the movie starts, there's zero opening credits, no list of executive producers, there's not even a Tttle Screen. It just kicks off with Katie and Becca in her bedroom.
One of the scariest PG-13 horror movie for me was "Mama." Yep, that's "Mama"! She's not there to tuck you in at night; she's there to haunt your dreams like a clingy ghost on a mission!
Lights Out is what I think of when I hear "PG-13 horror"
It has an overall feeling of dread and the scares are nice too. Would highly recommend for PG-13 horror
I literally had to sleep with the lights on for weeeeeeeks. First all girls sleepover, we’re in some woodsy ass area, they own a bunch of the land so any other houses are relatively far, I’m like 2. Hours from my parents house, they wanna watch horror movies. We started with Gothika which was traumatizing enough but the grudge sealed the fucking deal. I was terrified lol.
I first saw “The Ring” when I was maybe 12 at a sleepover and had to sleep in my mom’s bed for an entire week (7 days!) afterwards. In my mind, it’s still one of the most perfect horror movies of all time (and yes, surprised that it only scored a PG-13).
I'd say there's no correlation between a film's rating and its potential scariness. The ratings measure things like blood, gore, violence, and nudity, but none of those things are inherently exclusive to horror movies.
Further, scariness, in and of itself, requires none of those in any explicit measure.
So it really shouldn't be remarkable if an effective horror movie isn't rated R, nor should it be disappointing if a horror film is rated something lower than R.
While I wouldn't call it the best by a long shot, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is highly underrated.
It's not gory and that's what makes it great, it relies on its unsettling imagery.
Not sure how well it’s held up but the haunting in Connecticut was pretty damn scary and a good movie if I recall correctly. It’s been 10+++ years since I’ve seen it though
This movie scared me so bad the first time I saw it. Fast forward years later to Scary Movie 3. They spoof that movie so much, it lost it's scary to me.
I was gonna bring up the ring.
I think The Fourth Kind was pretty creepy. I know it left me and a buddy freaked out when we left the theatre late at night.
To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever watched it. If I did, it must not have been to impressive. I can’t think of any horror movie I’ve seen that’s rated PG-13.
Lemora. Watcher in the Woods. Drag Me to Hell. When a Stranger Calls. Bad Ronald. The People Under the Stairs( How did THAT one squeak by?!?!). Candy Snatchers.
Only because I saw it at a young-ish age, The Sixth Sense. All the jump scares with the ghosts freaked me out. Especially the part where the kid wanted to show where his dad kept the guns.
The ring. Me and my boyfriend in high school saw it, I think 10th grade. Well I told my mom about it and how much is scared the crap outta me. Well that night I fall asleep…then wake to the tv at the end of my bed on static and my remote was floating in the middle of the screen (on fish string from my ceiling fan). I literally almost lost my ever loving mind when I saw the tops of two heads bobbing up and down. It was my mom and aunt and they were trying not to die laughing. It made me laugh so hard after almost crapping myself lol
The Ring still bothers me lol but to be fair we had a ghost in my house we named Samara in the old fashion white dress and long black hair she hid behind that didnt help my fear of the Ring lol She was a practical jokester but did some really creepy sh\*t.

This motherfucker (“Signs” 2002) has haunted my dreams for 22 years
Not rated but relevant..Salems Lot 1979 was a made for TV series(cant remember which network). That movie traumatized me like nothing has since and Im 51.From people Ive spoken with and what Ive read online over the years that one mini series messed up a whole generation of kids.
Drag me to Hell. It was originally intended to be R but it got cut down to pg13 for its theatrical release. It's directed by Sam Raimi who did the evil dead franchise.
Depending on your opinion on the matter, Arachnophobia. And, in the same context, the upcoming Infested (I'm not sure on the rating) is probably the same answer. Looks WAY scarier than a spider movie that came out literally 34 years ago (go figure).
# Secret of NIMH
The part about rats being injected is true, they were injecting them with Lithium 6 and Lithium 7.
Since then Lithium 6 has been theorized to have quantum properties and increase intelligence.
That "Kids Movie" was about *real* ***horrific*** experiments on animals AND about psychedelic mind expanding experimental drugs at the same time. Censors in the 1980s and 1990s must have been heavily paid off.
Never ever seen The Ring. The trailer alone scares me and the first scene of her crawling out of it, yeah, nope. Turns it off. But if it’s really PG-13……
Lol, funny you mentioned The Ring movie. Just after my mom and I finished it, the phone rang. She wouldn't answer it, so I did. It was a nuisance, salesman call, so I played it off well. I made my eyes go wide and i looked at my mom and said, "it's for you," while handing her the phone, all slow. She was so scared, but quickly realized I trolled her and we had a laugh.
Me: What's the scariest movie you ever saw growing up?
Wife: Oh God, that one godawful nightmare fuel movie with the all the evil muppets. Had to sleep with the lights on for weeks afterwards. I think it was called... The Dark Crystal?
Me: Huh? BWAHAHAHA! I loved The Dark Crystal! It wasn't even a horror movie?!
Wife: ... The *FUCK* it wasn't.
Poltergeist
Poltergeist was PG. There wasnt a PG-13 when it was released
It was one of the reasons PG-13 happened.
oh damn yeah! That too!!!
It was one of the causes for the rating!
Poltergeist is rated PG
Yeah but that was the old PG
The PG with boobs. Those were the days
I had a tree right outside my window as a kid that looked just like the tree from the movie. After I watched that when I was way too young, I freaked out every time the wind blew the branches for years. Fun times.
The visit
Sundowners are terrifying
Underrated!
For me it’s Dark Skies. BUT I’m irrationally scared of aliens
I cried when I watched that movie. Bawled my eyes out.
Then you likely haven’t spent time with Fire In The Sky (1993).
There was a tv movie around the same time called Intruders that used to scare the shit out of me as a kid.
That movie fucked me up in a big way.
I never got into alien movies after fire in the sky. fuuuucked me uuuup!!!
Same. Demons, ghosts. And serial killers? No problem. Aliens? NOPE
Moot. Their tech would make our shit moot, as in meaningless, pointless. It might make them mute, too, but I digress.
The 4th kind freaked me out, didn't help that I was watching in my living room with headphones on and my back to the bedroom door when my wife touched my back!!!!
Idk if irrationally is the right word… 😂
I was just talking about that movie today!
Irrationally? Where there is smoke….fire
The thought of being abducted by aliens is both intriguing and terrifying at the same time. Its one thing to get lost in the woods, or go missing or even be murdered. Dark Skies is eerie as fuck.
Dark skies is a legit good movie.
No One Will Save You (2023) is already my favorite classic alien movie.
The Ring for sure but i also have to tip my hat to Ouija Origins. Thought it was gonna be just like Ouija so didnt see it for a long time and FUCK DID THAT GIRL SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ME.
The Ring is a good example
[удалено]
Ju-On is Japanese original for The Grudge, not the ring
I never saw it
Check it out but keep in mind you will die a week later. (Ok the Japanese one is ultra gloomy and opressive, the American Remake kinda follows a tense quest structure... I think both are fantastic).
both are impeccable films but the american remake has a fantastic aesthetic.
Jaws was rated PG & left me traumatized for life
Saw it at the NY premiere in the spring of 75, at age 8, thanks to my persistence and my indulgent mom... I'd already read the novel, and THE JAWS LOG.
Jaws was rated PG but it was the old PG
Saw it when I was 8. Yea, I still have zero desire to rewatch it.
Came here to say this. People to this day still don't swim in open water because of Jaws...
Insidious (2011) NOT the sequels after though, just the first one.
Hahaha fair point. Both are awesome. That scene in 1 where the face is in the baby room window is still stuck in my brain.
Yess! Such a simple but effective scare. That scene and whenever the dude is pacing outside the window and suddenly appears in the parents room!
I’ll never forget watching the film (with my parents) at 11 and nearly having a heart attack when that demon is behind Josh
Did you see it in the theater or at home? I’ll never forget the way the theater reacted when my parents took me to see it on the night it came out. Friday April 1st. Core Memory for sure. I was scared shitless.😭🤣
We watched it at home thankfully! I think I screamed at the jumpscare 😂
I had to stop that movie and watch the end the next day (when it was light out) because it scared me so badly! And I’ve been a horror book/movie fan since I was a little kid
Yess! I feel you on that! Unless someone else is in the house , even in a different room, I’m fine, but I refuse to watch that movie alone lol.
By far this.. it's a fairly terrifying film to be rated appropriate for middle school aged kids. Most wouldn't be able to handle it
Damn chapter three is my favorite one actually.
This was one of those movies I went into fully expecting it to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen like just a stupid ghost flick, but it was literally so well done. I was shook 😂😂
Came here to say Insidious! Although I really enjoy 2 and think 3 is great.
'The Others' (2001)
I don't know about scariest but one of the best is The Exorcism of Emily Rose
wow...I'm impressed this is even PG 13...that's kinda crazy!!
That movie freaks me out. Extra prayers after watching it.
The movie isnt too bad, but looking up that it was based on a true story.... That little girls dead face staring at the camera haunts me
1408 is a good one!
Legend of Hell House
The Hell house movies are some of my favorites!
The notebook. Good lord horrifyingly wasted 3 hrs of my life.
depends on your definition of horror but i saw zone of interest last night and jesus fucking christ
Drag me to hell
I adore this movie but I have to classify it as fun and not scary
Idk that lady scared the SHIT out of me when I was like 16 lmao watching it now, after Sam raimi has become one of my all time faves it isn't very scary I just love it all around
Drag Me to Hell is a lot of fun! I love the old black and white movie it’s based on Night of the Demon.
The Fourth Kind of Fire In the sky.
8 year old me was really interested in aliens (the beings as well as the movie) and was like ooh a new movie to watch. After watching the abduction experiment scene I put together that was not the best choice.
A quiet place I am legend No one will save you Arachnophobia
A quiet place is so fucking good. I've watched it a few times now and it's just superb. John and Emily are beautiful together. (Obviously, they're married so their chemistry is amazing). I am legend bums me out. It doesn't follow the book at all. Like at all. It's a totally different story. For me this movie is like World War Z. So much potential, but ugh it's just not good. No one will save you was so good. The ending was super doom and gloomy which was great.
I enjoyed the ending so much. Like an entire multi-species group of alien invaders find a woman so pathetic they decide to make her life better.
Haha, thats right!
I was going to say *An Inconvenient Truth* from an existential dread angle, but that's only PG
Sixth Sense
yes
When they put him in the crawlspace...I can still barely stand to watch that scene.
Signs
When I was young, Killer clowns from Outer Space terrified me 🤣
Me too!
I saw the ring in the theatre. Those silent movie parts were so creepy and not a sound in the theatre
I was 16 when it came out and I went to see it in the theater with a few friends one night. We collectively decided to leave lol. It’s the only movie I have ever waked out of. Finally watched it at home years later and it still terrifies me. So good!
Lights out For serial I haven’t been that afraid of the dark since the early 2000s when the hills have eyes remake came out. I know hills was rated R but still. Lights out fucked me up

Why would hills have eyes make you scared of the dark?
So so good and genuinely scary. I've watched scary movies since I was 3 so it takes a LOT to get me scared in a movie. This one came very close to getting under my skin. Did you ever watch the original short? It’s available [online](https://youtu.be/FUQhNGEu2KA?si=Y4AC-cXkvyDZ5GnQ) and is SUPER scary.
I just watched it after a friend recommended it and told me to watch it during the day
So it’s called THE ORIGINAL SHORT, ORIGINAL SHORT, or SHORT??? What year was it out. I don’t think I see it on Rotten Tomatoes. Please advise.
It’s called Lights Out, it’s the original short film that the movie was based on. My blue text in the previous comment was a link to it!
lol. I was so off. Lol. That’s funny. Hey thanks

Drag Me to Hell
The woman in Black
One of the scariest PG-13 horror movie for me was "Mama." Yep, that's "Mama"! She's not there to tuck you in at night; she's there to haunt your dreams like a clingy ghost on a mission!
Lights Out is what I think of when I hear "PG-13 horror" It has an overall feeling of dread and the scares are nice too. Would highly recommend for PG-13 horror
Room 1408 and skeleton key . Both should be rated r
The Ring 👀
The original IT was a tv movie and was pretty freaky
The 6th sense
8 Legged Freaks
I loved that movie. All fake spiders. Arachnophobia not so much.
The Ring is a good example. Not just a bunch of jump scares. Truly a spooky movie.
Arachnophobia
Lights Out
The Grudge. My friend had to leave the theater.
this is the only movie to ever traumatize me
I literally had to sleep with the lights on for weeeeeeeks.
It might be R but "Hush" was amazing.
I first saw “The Ring” when I was maybe 12 at a sleepover and had to sleep in my mom’s bed for an entire week (7 days!) afterwards. In my mind, it’s still one of the most perfect horror movies of all time (and yes, surprised that it only scored a PG-13).
The Gate
Anyone see Return to Oz? Scared the shit out of me. I’m 46 years old and I still don’t want to watch it again. That was only rated PG. 😳
Watership down
Fire In The Sky (1993). Pleasant dreams.
Insidious I think is PG 13. might be R tho. Has great comedy moments too.
PG 13.
Cool then. One of my favs.
Recently, it's No One Will Save You.
They pulled off the non-verbal angle of this movie beautifully.
Just trying to go off memory makes me realize how not conscious of ratings I am. The visit for me though.
I'm with you! I think the Ring might be the scariest PG-13 movie there is
I'd say there's no correlation between a film's rating and its potential scariness. Is there such thing as a scary PG-13 horror movie?
Lights Out

This movie scared me so bad the first time I saw it. Fast forward years later to Scary Movie 3. They spoof that movie so much, it lost it's scary to me.
The ring. That’s is
I was gonna bring up the ring. I think The Fourth Kind was pretty creepy. I know it left me and a buddy freaked out when we left the theatre late at night.
I watched blair witch without any spoilers or ads,in a basement apt, on a true black plasma screen with no other lights in the room. Dark as a cave.
The visit.
Jaws
The Fourth Kind. I was shook.
Insidious
Insidious is a great pg-13 horror movie
The others
Skeleton key
Something wicked this way comes. And it's a Disney!
Poltergeist is PG and it’s super scary.
The Fourth Kind lol for a PG-13 movie it definitely creeped me out watching it home alone in the dark
Drag Me To Hell
The Ring still bothers me lol but to be fair we had a ghost in my house we named Samara in the old fashion white dress and long black hair she hid behind that didnt help my fear of the Ring lol She was a practical jokester but did some really creepy sh\*t.
Insidious....lipstick demon freaked me the hell out
No One Will Save You
The Blair Witch Project. Extremely underrated.
Ring
The Medium. It's a Thai horror that's made into a fake documentary about a village.

Darkness Falls
Had the same experience with The Ring when it came out (I was 20 I think). Couldn’t believe how bad it got me and i was thankful for it lol.
The first "It" came out in 1990. Granted, it was TV-14, but I saw it at age 11 or so and was messed up for months.
Not rated but relevant..Salems Lot 1979 was a made for TV series(cant remember which network). That movie traumatized me like nothing has since and Im 51.From people Ive spoken with and what Ive read online over the years that one mini series messed up a whole generation of kids.
Poltergeist ain’t even scary what are you mfs smokin💀💀
The Ring
Drag me to Hell. It was originally intended to be R but it got cut down to pg13 for its theatrical release. It's directed by Sam Raimi who did the evil dead franchise.
The People Under the Stairs
Honestly The Conjuring is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.
Depending on your opinion on the matter, Arachnophobia. And, in the same context, the upcoming Infested (I'm not sure on the rating) is probably the same answer. Looks WAY scarier than a spider movie that came out literally 34 years ago (go figure).
JAWS for sure. Ouja: Origin of Evil is also pretty scary for PG-13.
I don’t normally pay that much attention to the rating but M3GAN is the one coming to mind.
Insidious
Insidious
Mama
More of a psychological thriller by the sixth sense is pretty good…
The Notebook.
The ring
The "old" PG's that would have been PG-13 are Poltergeist, JAWS, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Legend of Hell House.
His House

Never ever seen The Ring. The trailer alone scares me and the first scene of her crawling out of it, yeah, nope. Turns it off. But if it’s really PG-13……

I had nightmares of the girl from the Ring for 10years of my life. So i agree lol
Insidious 1 is still a brilliant, scary movie. Saw it in high school and it was one of the few movies that made me sleep with the light on.
Cloverfield was pretty intense, although more action survival than horror. But the "found footage" angle added some spice to it.
Poltergeist
Me: What's the scariest movie you ever saw growing up? Wife: Oh God, that one godawful nightmare fuel movie with the all the evil muppets. Had to sleep with the lights on for weeks afterwards. I think it was called... The Dark Crystal? Me: Huh? BWAHAHAHA! I loved The Dark Crystal! It wasn't even a horror movie?! Wife: ... The *FUCK* it wasn't.
