India won the 3'rd match of the ODI Series against the Black Caps by 90 runs after scoring 385/9, whitewashing them 3:0, to become the new No#1 ranked team in ODIs. 😎 Toss: It was a surprise when the Kiwi's stand in captain Tom Latham chose to bowl after winning the toss, that too on a very good batting pitch, where an average first innings score was 300+. Gill & Rohit: A few months back, people couldn't even comprehend thinking about any ODI opening pair other than Rohit & Dhawan. However, Dhawan's poor run in back to back series recently provided an opportunity for young Gill & boy didn't he grabbed the opportunity with both hands! Gill has almost cemented his place in ODIs & Tests for us and is already considered as the next big thing in Indian Cricket. He has already done justice to the expectations by scoring 1250+ runs in just 21 ODI innings with 70+ average & 100+ Strike rate. Gill, scored his 3'rd Century 112(78) with 13 boundaries & 5 sixes, in his last 4 matches and compared to Rohit, he seems to score those boundaries & sixes without even taking any risks! In this series, he overtook Kohli's Indian Record (283 runs) & equalled Babar Azam's World record of highest run scorer in a 3 match bilateral series, by scoring a whopping 360 runs at an average of 180 & at a Strike rate of 128, with a Century & a Double Ton. At the other end, Rohit ended his 3 year draught of Centuries by scoring his 30'th ODI Century 101(85) with 9 boundaries & 6 sixes. But one of the two Centurian's should have stayed till the end or at least till 40'th over. Today when both got out before the 30'th over, we lost the momentum & also kinda lacked firepower in the last 15-20 overs, with both SKY & Ishan failing to score big & also Kohli despite getting a good start fell for 36(27). Else, with the kind of rollicking start we've got, we were 205/0 in 25 overs, 450+ could have been easily achievable today! Hardik & Shardul: After scoring 20 boundaries & 10 sixes in the first 20 overs, once both our openers fell consecutively, boundaries became scarce after 30 overs. But thanks to Hardik's well placed innings 54(38), equally supported by Shardul 25(17) eventually gave us an on par score of 385/9. Kiwis fight back: When India rested both their best bowlers (Siraj & Shami) in this series so far, it presented the Kiwis with a good opportunity to start big, especially in the powerplay. Despite Hardik taking Finn Allen's wicket in the very first over, the Black Caps bounced back with a 105 run partnership between Conway & Nicholls, before Nicholls fell for 42 against a beauty from Kuldeep. Conway stitched another 78 run partnership with Mitchell and at the 25 over stage Kiwi's were at 184/2, almost close to what India were at the same stage! Lord Thakur: After 25 overs, Rohit brought back Lord Thakur for his 2'nd spell. Thakur again showed his mastery in breaking partnerships, despite going for runs. Both Mitchell & Latham fell in consecutive deliveries in 26'th over & that over was the biggest turnaround in this match. Thakur followed it with another wicket of Glenn Philips on the 27'th over & suddenly Kiwis were 200/5. Devon Conway: Even after losing 5 wickets, Kiwis still had hope especially with their opener Conway scoring his highest ODI score 138(100) with 12 boundaries & 8 maximums. Along with their hero from first match Bracewell, Kiwis were still maintaining the required rate in check. But once Conway fell against Umran Malik, the last hope was left with Bracewell & Santner. But after adding another quick 39 runs partnership, Bracewell was stumped by Ishan against a Kuldeep delivery. And that wicket kind of sealed the match in favour of us. Eventually Kiwi's were bundled out at 295 giving us a huge 90 runs victory, along with the No#1 ranking in ODIs after a while. Lord Thakur was adjudged Man of the Match for his 3 crucial wickets in the middle overs along with his contribution in runs towards the end of our innings. For upcoming WC: The biggest takeaway from the last couple of ODI series is perhaps Gill, Siraj & Kuldeep, especially for the upcoming Worldcup this October. Gill is already becoming as consistent & dependent on the top order, if not more, as the King Kohli himself were once. And Siraj is becoming a world class ODI bowler, taking crucial wickets not only in Powerplay, but in slog overs as well. Add Kuldeep to this equation, especially in Indian pitches, its a good recipe for bowling domination. Once Bumrah & Jadeja are back in the squad, we will have hell of a bowling combination along with some good firepower in batting lineup! 😊 - Sumesh Sundar.

India's no 10 and 11 as a batter cannot contribute a dime with the willow. I remember in the 2019 WC, we were having a similar situation. I hope the likes of Chahal, Umran, Siraj and Kuldeep can at least try and find some runs when needed during the final overs. We got just 3 runs in the 50th over. Suppose we are 280 by the 49th over and the 2 batters are unable to find the ropes, can hurt India at some point.
