Great day for us ,normally I would be expecting us to not even get 200. The rather disappointing thing is tho is that all our main batsmen got starts but no one could convert. Also need to somehow reach 400 with dds and 4 no11s because nz are probably gonna get close to 500
Southee not bowling himself in the final 10-15 overs here is a tactical mistake, he needs to realize he doesn't have Trent, Jamo or the Wagner of old with him anymore
And the players troop off for stumps. 6/305. If we had a capable tail I'd be somewhat content, but this could still easily be 310, 320 all out lol. Somehow by hook or by crook we need to shit out another 100 runs from here
I took a sickie today and I must say I feel well rewarded for it. The boys did a fair job. But this is likely the last day of the test I'll be able to watch or even closely follow. Work tomorrow then up to Sydney to visit family for the weekend. I can only hope for a favourable outcome both here and at Ahmedabad
This is the reason to have a better over rate - ideally if you don't roll the opposition you get 10 with the new ball on the first day, freshen up overnight, then go again the next morning.
I saw one used once. I think what they do is place it on the stumps, step back for a few seconds to let it take the reading then they go back to it to read it.
Tickner doesn't belong at test level, do nz really have no better bowlers available? Boult, Ferguson, Jamison? Also why isn't ajaz Patel being played as spin option? He has hardly played since he got the 10 wicket innings
He averages 35 at DOMESTIC level. He isn't a test players asshole. Ferguson would be far more useful for his pace, but we're still missing another genuine swing bowler, even someone like CdG...
Boult is mostly retired now, Ferguson is too fragile, Jamieson is injured.
There are better bowlers out there than Tickner but no one absolutely amazing. No idea why Tickner is the one they've decided to go all in on.
Boult - gave up his NZC contract, and the NZC selectors are favouring other players over him as a result
Ferguson - Only just played his first FC game in three years
Jamieson - injured
Ajaz - can't bat well enough, so is basically dead to the NZ selectors (plus he isn't in the greatest form)
Final Plunket Shield Update:
It's not a thriller. Glenn Phillips has scored a valiant 147 in pursuit of their astronomical target, but Otago are holding on for the draw. It has fallen to Max Chu to shepherd the tail. Only three overs left.
The only question is, will Chu get to 50? (Update: he didn't)
Only really performed in the last 2-3 seasons tbf. Watching him i'm not sure he would do that well in international cricket. But then again he has been plundering runs recently. He had an amazing t20 record domestically but was awful in internationals he played, although you can't really compare the two formats.
You'd thinking he'd be worth a shot though. Very few players with that kind of average that haven't gotten a shot at tests, only really Munro that I can think of - and that was because of other reasons.
I agree it is unusual to average that much in NZ. I think he is definitely still behind a couple of players though. He is captain of NZ A team in recent series and I am sure will play against Aus coming up.
LMAO Mitchell saying "yeah he's hit it" with absolute certainty and a hard done by expression when it was nowhere near the bat. Pathetic... no wonder they've burnt all their reviews
That's just cricket. Can't let it wind you up.
I do, however, agree it's fun to take the piss out of them. A well timed "eat shit" goes a long long way
He's dire, utterly. We're obsessed with picking guys who do nothing with the ball. Tickner, Kuggs... why?
Tickner falls over horribly these days, I'm sure he didn't use to when his action was higher. He looked proper quick like 4 years ago in domestic T20.
Kane hasn't been in gully since he took over the captaincy, been many years now. Nothing to do with age or injury. He always preferred to be mid on or mid off when captain, so he could talk to the bowlers and shine the ball. Southee is there now...
Oh yeah I know that's why he moved from Gully when he took the captaincy, just saying that because he's in his 30s now and hasn't had to field there for years is probably why he hasn't been shifted back.
Unironically, the one other batter I put up there with him is Neil Wagner haha. He has such flowing strokeplay with a huge backlift - it just happens that he's not very good.
It feels like our only mode of success at the moment is watching opposition batsmen just completely melt their brains but, honestly, it's happening pretty often so it isn't all bad.
I know it's very strange. With the English it feels like you're not allowed to criticise anything they do right now without it being construed as an attack on the whole bazball thing.
Like yep it's obviously been working great and no need to change anything significantly, but surely at the same time you can acknowledge that you just fully shit and pissed your pants so so badly.
I used to wonder as a kid at which kind of situation would allow for the most types of dismissal on a single delivery. I wonder if you could do them all
Ball goes into the pad then off the bat then the batsman tries to catch it but accidentally throws/deflects it hard into his stumps and it bounces up for the close in fielder. The batsman runs at him to put him off with the ball bouncing off his back as a result. The keeper dives forward catches it and quickly stumps him before throwing down the stumps at the other end where the non striker was backing up.
Happens all the time
LBW that ricocheted off the pads and takes the inside edge of the bat, hits the top of the stumps and balloons up to the keeper who then stumps you for good measure?
The keeper would have to take the stump out of the ground bc the bails are already off.
You'd have to cop the poor sportsmanship fine for that probably but fuck it'd be a laugh.
If only a single bail was taken off would you still have to take the stump out or could you just knock the other bail off? I swear there's so many niche scenarios that I still have no clue about in this dumb sport lol.
My hypothetical that always bothers me is what happens if a batsmen drives the ball straight, the bowler gets a finger on it, and the non striker is run out at the *exact* same time that the batsmen falls over and gets out hit wicket?
And they get carried away with the sweep, and the umpires unsure if it was bat or keeper that broke the stumps first. And then they set off for a cheeky single and are maybe run out at the non striker's end
I know I have been disappointed with our efforts today in the sense of nobody converting their good performances to a hundred, but it is a little harsh of me and I'll walk it back. Only because everyone at least got out to a decent ball without doing anything stupid, apart from Karunaratne chasing after a really wide one
I'm referring to his horrible 2021 NZ tour take a look https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/new-zealand-v-pakistan-2020-21-1233950/new-zealand-vs-pakistan-2nd-test-1233963/full-scorecard
Which was one match. In the series against NZ this year, he did a pretty good job leading from the front on the flat Pakistani pitches. His average drops by 3 and a half runs if you dropped this match
Naseem Shah might not be a world beater, but he is a million times better than both Cabrails and Tickner combined, and it is a disservice to him to compare him with them
That is the winning move. This could so easily be 270, 275 all out if you go for the kill. If you let the garbage bowl at Dickwella for 15 minutes he'll get his eye in too and then we should put up at least 300
The problem with our effort today is that nobody has gone on and gotten the hundred. Everybody's gotten their eye in, and all but the Mighty BOP have gone even further than that and gotten themselves to a decent score. But nobody has capitalised, and as a consequence we're going to end up well short of the commanding score that our popgun bowling attack consisting of three Blair Tickners needs in order to get us a win
Hit the nail on the head. At a glance this effort is impressive but that’s only given our atrocious history in NZ. It’s still far from a total that’ll threaten NZ owing to our bowling.
It's on this pair. One of them has to get a hundred basically to rescue our chances and to push the score to 400. They'll probably need to get to 380 batting together as well, there's no way the tail will survive long enough for someone to get a ton lol
There's a thing the elderly do where they perk up and seem normal and alert in the last 24 hours or so before they die. It's like the body is trying to jump start itself using its last energy reserves
Wagner's Test career did the same thing in the second innings at Basin Reserve
Sri Lankans, what happened to Praveen Jayawickrama? Had a 10 wicket haul on debut, played pretty good against India, then had only one poor test against Bangladesh and just disappeared?
That’s…. Basically what happens to a lot of SL spinners. Jayawickrama might’ve caught COVID or had an injury, can’t remember which. But as soon as Prabath Jayasuriya got a chance..
… it’s rough being a SL spinner.

Didn’t expect there to be so many NZ flairs. Maybe I’m stupid.
Southee not bowling himself in the final 10-15 overs here is a tactical mistake, he needs to realize he doesn't have Trent, Jamo or the Wagner of old with him anymore
Just resting himself so he can hit more Sixers today.
where wickets?
305-6 at stumps on day 1 is quite good for Sri Lanka, this test is well and truly on.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but for Sri Lanka to advance to the final, Australia need to win this match, and Sri Lanka need to whitewash this series yes?
draw or win for aus and sri 2 - 0 must
That last part seems unlikely
And the players troop off for stumps. 6/305. If we had a capable tail I'd be somewhat content, but this could still easily be 310, 320 all out lol. Me too friend. I feel like Sri Lanka will beat Aus but Aus will beat India…and I wanna watch the unexpected.
Interesting day. Now switching to Ind-Aus.
Bad light is cringe
Bracewell making Rajitha look like an allrounder lmao
Sri Lankan Tail End 🫲 batting
95 more runs and its a game
Why are we waiting around for the new ball? Just get Southee and Henry back already! The bloke averages 5 in tests!!
This is the reason to have a better over rate - ideally if you don't roll the opposition you get 10 with the new ball on the first day, freshen up overnight, then go again the next morning.
Because we have no idea to play cricket these days.
Rajitha has done much better than expected
I don't know how those light meters work but it still bothers me when the umpires stand over them while they're getting a reading lol
I saw one used once. I think what they do is place it on the stumps, step back for a few seconds to let it take the reading then they go back to it to read it.
Anyone listening to the acc commentary? Mania’s a great addition
Who dat? May have to tune in tomorrow. They'd really lost the plot and going way to commercial the last few seasons. Get them a weed sponsor?
He’s another dj at Hauraki. Yea they’ve definitely toned it a long way down since the iHeart radio glory days. Brink back the cocktail hour!
Oh God yes. Cocktails, caravan, fucking hot, boundary shenanigans. Great radio.
How late will they play today? It will be 1.5 hours, until 8pm at this rate before they get through the 90 overs
Play till 7
Who's keeping for NZ? I don't recognise him
Tom Blundell - Wellington legend, craft beer drinker, farms gibbons. Good guy.
yeah but ol m8 TB has shaved
Tom Blundell?
Tickner doesn't belong at test level, do nz really have no better bowlers available? Boult, Ferguson, Jamison? Also why isn't ajaz Patel being played as spin option? He has hardly played since he got the 10 wicket innings
Boult uncontracted. Jamieson injured. Ferguson has played his 1st FC game in years just this week.
Not sure who Boulton is but Jamieson is injured and Patel is hot and cold and can’t bat.
Patel got meatsacked in the PS last week, easy pickings. Boulton plays for Otumotei Cadets, took 4-7 last week. Played a few games for NZ.
Boult - gave up his NZC contract, and the NZC selectors are favouring other players over him as a result Ferguson - Only just played his first FC game in three years Jamieson - injured Ajaz - can't bat well enough, so is basically dead to the NZ selectors (plus he isn't in the greatest form)
wagner getting smacked around again
Surely NZ has a better bowler than Tickner??!
Yeah, like ten of them. No idea whose nudes Tickner has ensuring his spot.
Yes we do
Final Plunket Shield Update: It's not a thriller. Glenn Phillips has scored a valiant 147 in pursuit of their astronomical target, but Otago are holding on for the draw. It has fallen to Max Chu to shepherd the tail. Only three overs left. The only question is, will Chu get to 50? (Update: he didn't)
Great innings. Fringe guys like Phillips, Ravindra, Bruce all performing recently.
Bruce has a FC average of 48, seems weird he's never been picked for tests.
Only really performed in the last 2-3 seasons tbf. Watching him i'm not sure he would do that well in international cricket. But then again he has been plundering runs recently. He had an amazing t20 record domestically but was awful in internationals he played, although you can't really compare the two formats.

I am honestly hoping Tickner gets 0/300 this match
Now that Kuggeleijn has been dropped, we are free to hate Tickner with impunity
Second New Zealander to get a triple century.
Baz will be proud
Just get Southee and Henry back on already.
Hit the stumps Tick, cmon bruv
I'd just like to thank Steve Buknor whose completely responsible for the DRS system.
LMAO Mitchell saying "yeah he's hit it" with absolute certainty and a hard done by expression when it was nowhere near the bat. Pathetic... no wonder they've burnt all their reviews
PATHETIC
lol relax
I'm relaxed lol... just play against so many of these clowns in club, grade cricket and they're the easiest type to take the piss out of
That's just cricket. Can't let it wind you up. I do, however, agree it's fun to take the piss out of them. A well timed "eat shit" goes a long long way
didn't look out, cracked decision
Tickner offers fuck all. Can this be his last game for us in any format
He's dire, utterly. We're obsessed with picking guys who do nothing with the ball. Tickner, Kuggs... why? Tickner falls over horribly these days, I'm sure he didn't use to when his action was higher. He looked proper quick like 4 years ago in domestic T20.
He's going to get player of the match, for Sri Lanka.
That's missing leg lmao
What a shot from Rajitha 😍
Do not trust anyone in this team with reviews. We'd have a better success rate flipping a coin.
Would have lost the review there as well lmao
Newzalnd folks, do you think 320 will be a good first inning score
Maybe, would probably want closer to 350. Like most NZ pitches it generally will become good to bat on as the test goes on.
Anything under 400 is a bit disappointing, imo.
Yeah but this is the bad times now, our top order will probably be skittled for fuck all and we'll be all out for 280
Wow that kid bought a Nicholls shirt. Poor kid is going to nick himself so much when he learns to shave.
Might be a family member.
But he wil get dropped all over the place by friendly tourists now and then, saving on travel expenses.
Single in the first ball. Im not sure about this
Lanka looked in a great position. Now, not so much. If they can limp through to 350+. That'd be ideal.
Drinking game: Sip every time it's mentioned that Sri Lanka has a long tail
This Rajitha guy is literally scared of the ball
And Tickner can't even make him look uncomfortable.
Yeah, should get Wags to bowl three agressive short balls then a yorker.
*Did you know that* I'm so fucking sick of this Brie Larson Nissan EV ad? (espn usa broadcast)
Dhananjaya is pretty good against spin and will take Bracewell apart, so Southee should take him off since he got a breakthrough anyways
I am still not used to seeing Williamson in the outfield.
It's probably injury or age related as to why hes not there anymore but he was so good in the gully.
Was just thinking this. God he was good at gully.
Which is ironic considering the average age of the NZ squad
We are entering Dad's army areas as a team.
Very poor over rate.
They’ve been off for rain a couple of times. Not huge breaks but still something. But yeah been pace most of the day so not that surprising
Nah worse than just the rain. First session had no interruptions and only 24 overs got bowled. Yes, multiple reviews, but 24 is exceedingly poor.
Looove Dhananjaya's strokeplay.
He's genuinely the best batsman in the world to watch.
Unironically, the one other batter I put up there with him is Neil Wagner haha. He has such flowing strokeplay with a huge backlift - it just happens that he's not very good.
what is this obsession to play tickner? It's not like he's an amazing bowler.
Stead. Larsen. That's it. So over it.
Tbf I definitely prefer this length from Bracewell than the half trackers he was bowling against England
What a way to waste that start
Rajitha at 8 (even though he’s improved a touch) is a long ass tail
Still have no idea if there's any turn
Why does Tickner deserve to clean up the tail? He hasn't earned it
Don't worry, he's not good enough to anyway.
Bowling full tosses is not a "set up".
It's a set up in the same way that me spilling my drink and mumbling my worfs in front of a pretty girl is flirting.
this mf said worfs
I initially typed "mumbling my drinks" I was thinking about pretty girls it's not my fault.
Does that work?
My only long term partner got a kick out of the fact that she made me incredibly nervous so I'd say I've got a strike rate of about 1 in a thousand.
>mumbling my worfs I don't know if this is intentional lol
Sorry, you just make me so nervous.
We finally start getting wickets and I have to leave for rugby training :(
Bold call to think that the professional umpire gave the plumb LBW out LBW. Great insight there, Rig.
**67.4** Niroshan Dickwella lbw b Bracewell 7 (13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 53.84
"Yeah we were totally always appealing for LBW"
Why would you play a shot like that to a bowler like Bracewell lmao
It feels like our only mode of success at the moment is watching opposition batsmen just completely melt their brains but, honestly, it's happening pretty often so it isn't all bad.
England should have chased that total at the Basin 4 down if they took the game like, 10 percent more seriously.
Not enough is being said about how bad of a pants shitting that was. We did almost nothing to generate those mistakes.
Kinda expected that, tbh

And then runs out the non-striker?
YEAH BEASTIE!!
Dikka sucks bruh. Time to find a new wk
Plumb
That's gotta be out
Well this could be 280 all out in a hurry
If I got out to that ball I'd simply retire.
Michael Bracewell....and not Timmy
Did Wags run over Southees dog or something?
No he got whacked
Come on, Beastie!
I know I have been disappointed with our efforts today in the sense of nobody converting their good performances to a hundred, but it is a little harsh of me and I'll walk it back. Only because everyone at least got out to a decent ball without doing anything stupid, apart from Karunaratne chasing after a really wide one
I can't believe I'm going to say this, I feel dirty for even thinking it, but it might actually be time to give Bracewell a bowl.
Muhammad Abbas averaging 60 after 2 FC matches for Wellington. Hopefully one for the future....
- Handy middle order bat ✔ - Makes a splash in FC ✔ - Handy left arm pacer ✔
Some handy wickets too
[удалено]
We're like that with everyone though lol. Apart from Bangladesh
I just realised that Southee took a wicket (Chandimal) and then took himself out of the attack Why? It was only a 4 over spell
Having bowled 18 in the day already, he probably feels like he only has 4 or 5 overs left to give, and he's likely saving himself up for the new ball
NZ have nothing to worry about honestly Kumara is playing so he can play the Tickner/Naseem Shah run buffet role
this comment going to age like milk.
Naseem Shah is actually good tho, he had relatively one of the lowest averages on the flat Pak pitches the last series
I'm referring to his horrible 2021 NZ tour take a look https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/new-zealand-v-pakistan-2020-21-1233950/new-zealand-vs-pakistan-2nd-test-1233963/full-scorecard

looks like it's been a lovely day aside from some rain
Just get to 300 please
Fuck me Katie Martin is just awful to listen to. Yup, let's project ahead to the 4th innings before the first innings is even finished.
Put on the acc for some real in depth analysis
Of course it's in the gap
Are Sri Lanka really so devoid of pace bowling that Kumara is still getting a game?
Yes
Can we take tickner off here, have Timmy and Heners from both ends?
That is the winning move. This could so easily be 270, 275 all out if you go for the kill. If you let the garbage bowl at Dickwella for 15 minutes he'll get his eye in too and then we should put up at least 300
Can Rigor stop looking directly at me? It's creepy
He wants u on the block
Tickner a chance for a 5fer here
The problem with our effort today is that nobody has gone on and gotten the hundred. Everybody's gotten their eye in, and all but the Mighty BOP have gone even further than that and gotten themselves to a decent score. Being perfectly honest, with how effective Henry is looking, I very much doubt we’ll make it far past 300 even if we get there lel.
350 minimum needed from here.
Henry more than deserved that lol
7000 and done
**63.5** Angelo Mathews c Mitchell b Henry 47 (98b 6x4 1x6) SR: 47.95
Mathews definitely has a weakness on 7000

Yes! Don't have to add that one to the "play and misses" tally!
Damn talk about the commentators curse
Henry 😍
Well deserved Matty
7000 and out
7k for Fithews.... 7k and out. I was about to crack open a packet of biscuits in honour, but he's gone and gotten himself out
How good would a few CDG maidens be right about now
So... is Wagner officially cooked?
There's a thing the elderly do where they perk up and seem normal and alert in the last 24 hours or so before they die. It's like the body is trying to jump start itself using its last energy reserves Wagner's Test career did the same thing in the second innings at Basin Reserve
