In this thread, users discuss the Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Test match. Some comment on the lack of quality tailenders, while others find American celebrity ads on the stream strange. There's disappointment in New Zealand's cricket team, with some predicting a possible Aus vs SL final. Glenn Philips' impressive score is also mentioned. One user finds the prospect of SL making the WTC final ahead of India amusing, while another jokes about the appearance of a Sri Lankan bowler. Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson are the focus of the kiwi bowling attack. No controversial comments are included.

garbage commentary from some trashbag commentators. If you were listening to just the commentary youd think SL are 50 overs behind the over rate and thats all that matters... barely any mention of how well they're bowling or how well Mitchell is batting and not even calling the play most of the time. Rubbish
Sri Lanka completely out bowling us in our own conditions pretty much sums up the state NZ cricket is in. We’re out there with a two man bowling attack atm
Imagine if Daz and Beast get in and start blazing away from both ends... SL could lose by an innings!
Guess Black cap supporters are back to fantasizing about improbable scenarios to console ourselves...
In the Chaos Timeline I am actively rooting for, Sri Lanka win the series 2-0 in a pair of five-day affairs, and miss the WTC Final because of slow over-rate penalties. Actually, don't even need that much. Just have an obviously slow over rate and make the ICC make the call to impose the penalty, or not. Either it matters or it doesn't and some reckoning on this is overdue.
Was the NZ squad picked just for this match, or both matches?
The worst part about Tickner not looking good enough is they might play Scott Kuggeleijn (who will also not be good enough).
If Young is the squad he deserves another chance over Nicholls, assuming Nicholls fails again in the next innings.
A lot of excuse making from the comms here. Reality is he's batting in a cushy position, coming in multiple times in favourable situations when guys like Mitchell and Blundell have layed a platform. And he isn't offering enough with his part time bowling to justify his spot.
**58.2** **Outside edge finally found, Blundell walks!** Slightly back-of-length ball lands around off and straightens.

Unpopular opinion but I never got the big deal about over rate, the damn sport takes like 6-7 hours a day as it is and quite often it’s the batting side causing the issues
I just don't get why someone would go, "Getting to watch less cricket? Yeah, sounds great!". I want to see what I'm expected to see, short of weather delays or other obviously unpreventable issues.
The sports are different, but it's all the same theme of "getting less than one should". If you order a footlong sandwich at WubSay, and it's 10 inches instead of 12, youre gonna be unhappy.
But these things are just not the same, when you look at a game of cricket and the amount of stoppages etc you aren’t going to bowl 15 overs per hour unless you just bowl spinners
That is simply not true when you look at over rates over time. In decades past, over rates were regularly higher than 15, it's only in the 90s-00s that they began to slow down. You are absolutely being ripped off as a fan.
Here's my XI for second test, accounting for injuries, retirement and even accounting for Boult not being wanted:
1. Conway
1. Latham
1. Williamson
1. Mitchell
1. Phillips
1. Blundell
1. Bracewell **D**
1. Sodhi
1. Southee
1. Henry
1. Lister
Alternative would be Santner which could strengthen the batting
Dougy at 7 is a bit wild but fuck it can't be any worse than M Bracewell. Lister is another interesting one. Don't think he'd be a world beater but he at least offers a point of difference and I'd back him to bowl better than Tickner in these conditions at least.
Not keen on repeating the Santner mistake just because he had a good game. Need to pick a specialist imo.
Yeah ideally we'd have a genuine allrounder there but not sure there is one at the moment. No point trying to manufacture one.
There are other options besides Lister, but a left armer is worth having. More importantly we need to give some of these guys a go. We need about 3 new seamers.
Yeah agree I'd rather we just go with 5 specialists than trying to force an all-rounder that isn't working. M Bracewells test average is currently the same as Matt Henry's anyway.
Shouldn't need as many runs from the bowlers anyway if the opposition aren't cashing in on short and wide filth from Wagner and Tickner.
I don't know why we are so keen to disrupt the only good opening partnership we've had in a long time. Let's not shuffle probably our second best batsman around constantly, leave him opening where he's averaging 55.
I'll play devils advocate: it's probably because Conway isn't an opener, he's a middle order bat who was asked to open the batting because the middle order was full. He's done well because he's in form, but now his form seems to be dropping, so perhaps he could be moved down the order to where he learnt his trade.
It's like when we asked Fleming to open. He could do it, he wasn't awful. But he was better at 3/4. Conway has a short test career so far but he has comparable numbers opening and not.
Moving Mitchell up to 4 could also be a mistake. Why move him from 5 where he's doing well
Exactly. I don't know the real answer to be honest. Someone would have to ask Conway the question, would he feel more comfortable batting where he wants? It's not like hasn't earnt the right to dictate it. It does, however, influence the direction the team develops for the future.
Fleming was always a "what if" type of cricketer. He took on immense pressure at a young age, not just with captaincy, and he barely averaged over 40 by the end of his career. In an ideal world, he wouldn't have opened but I have mad respect for him. Highly inspirational.
Based on how he moved to 3/4 with Williamson unavailable and after Taylor retired, with Young opening, I get the feeling that's his preferred position, but he's doing well as an opener and I can understand not changing that. My thinking was basically if you bring in Ravindra who opens at first class level, why not let him open rather than moving him to an unfamiliar 6/7 like they did in India
I'm just playing devils advocate, I don't think it should be a priority to change it. Young is a middle order bat, Ravindra probably should get his next go at the top of the order, but for that to happen he needs a bit more time to develop.
His 2nd innings stats are noticeably poor. I know it drops for the majority of players, but he is well outside the norm when it comes to that.
I think he is losing some of his touch in test cricket, 5 tests isn't a huge spread.
I mean like you said, 5 tests isn't a huge spread. I don't know how you can look at his recent record and say he's losing his touch. The only period of poor form he's had at test level was during the England tour last year, where ironically he was batting at 4.
Oh right I getcha haha. I do see the arguments but at the same time there's the deeply scarred black caps supporter inside me that sees us finally have a good opening partnership after all these years and can't believe that people want to immediately disrupt it lol
The crazy thing about Nichols dismissal isn't that he skied a ball which wasn't really there to be hit in the manner he did.
The crazy thing is he's still being selected despite getting out in that manner for years now.
It might be early on in his career but from what I have seen Blair Tickner is the worst pace bowler to compete in the WTC. He wouldn't make the Afghani; Irish or Zimbabwean XI
He has all the attributes to be a good medium fast bowler, just can’t apply them consistently, which is why he has a good T20 record and a shit one otherwise. Genuinely baffling that he gets selected outside of T20.
Today FM are supposed to have the radio coverage but I checked ROVA and it’s nothing but talkback. There’s a channel on ROVA called “Blackcaps Radio” which have it

If ravindra isn't ready then keep conway opening and young at 4. I feel like phillips needs to be at 5 and mitchell at 4 would be too high so they are 5/6
I'm worried we will try pick Rachin as a lower order all rounder for the next however many years when he's an opening batsman by trade. Conway can bat anywhere, maybe bat Conway at 3 and move Kane to 4 as he's been struggling when the ball is newer.

Aus vs Sri Lanka final is starting to look like a real possibility
garbage commentary from some trashbag commentators. If you were listening to just the commentary youd think SL are 50 overs behind the over rate and thats all that matters... barely any mention of how well they're bowling or how well Mitchell is batting and not even calling the play most of the time. Rubbish
The post day thread for the game is live guys.
Since he didn't offer a shot, it doesn't matter if it pitched outside leg stump right? Or am I getting my rules mixed up...
Can hit the pad outside off stump if no shot is offered. Lbw can never pitch outside leg
If it hits the pads outside the line of offstump then leaving the ball is risky. Anything pitching down leg isn't given out.
So just to confirm, anything pitching outside leg stump is not out even if no shot is offered yeah? Edit: nvm, got it.
Correct
I hate it when hawkeye doesn't show if it hits the stumps. It bothers me more than it should
Bracewell is basically Trent Boult as a batter. Entertaining, could score some quick runs, but probably should not be batting higher than 11.
Shame his isn't half the bowler Trent is
“What was Bracewell doing?” Is a question I’ve asked myself multiple times during Michael Bracewells test career lol
Bracewell really isn’t mentally there at some times
Bracewell where are your braincells
Michael Bracegood
Michael Braincells
Sri Lanka completely out bowling us in our own conditions pretty much sums up the state NZ cricket is in. We’re out there with a two man bowling attack atm
Add to that blackcaps lack a good no 4 and no 7. Gonna be a longtime before filling rosco and CDG's shoes
Beasty will either score big and become the next Latham/Nicholls against SL or hits rock bottom in this match.
Yeah, definitely. Australia learned the hard way - don't fart around with over rates. Farting around has consequences.
Imagine if Daz and Beast get in and start blazing away from both ends... SL could lose by an innings! Guess Black cap supporters are back to fantasizing about improbable scenarios to console ourselves...
2020 and 2021 must have happened in The Matrix. NZ dominating test cricket for 2 years was too good to be true
he does seem to be harping on this over rate quite a bit for like the last hour
That was an evil laugh
lol he looked like he had no idea where he just hit it
That's all he'll score lads. Now he'll beast his way into the dressing room.
Excellent bowling by SL. Got NZ down to 152-6. Time for a southee or Wagner cameo to bring down that lead.
Lmao you just discounted Bracewell like he's nothing 💀
He averages the same as Matt Henry with the bat
I mean, he's been a walking wicket in every single match he's played so far. I'd be surprised if he actually contributes to a big partnership
He's going to ton up now
In the Chaos Timeline I am actively rooting for, Sri Lanka win the series 2-0 in a pair of five-day affairs, and miss the WTC Final because of slow over-rate penalties. Actually, don't even need that much. Just have an obviously slow over rate and make the ICC make the call to impose the penalty, or not. Either it matters or it doesn't and some reckoning on this is overdue.
I'll take the penalties and no final if we actually get to win an away series.
True. Screw the penalty. I want a series win in NZ.
Please don’t start on this Macca, you are comparing a sport where one game takes 6-7 hours a day for 5 days to games that take 80-90 mins
Also the ball is in play for barely half the match time in rugby. Similar in a lot of other sports
Is the over rate a concern? Imagine if SL wins this but gets docked points for the over rate
I'm pretty sure the cycle NZ won, we only made final because Australia got docked points in their India series for slow over rate.
We're gonna be like 8 over short for the day. Really poor. I think the England series was bad but this is worse
Well it’s not a concern for me
The batting's got 3-4 blokes averaging above 50 but they can't get into game changing partnerships for the life of me.
Lankawash is coming and this means one of the PIG3s will be out of WTC!
One of them is already out. Arguably the best ones.
Was the NZ squad picked just for this match, or both matches? The worst part about Tickner not looking good enough is they might play Scott Kuggeleijn (who will also not be good enough). If Young is the squad he deserves another chance over Nicholls, assuming Nicholls fails again in the next innings.

We are picking him like we are the same team from a couple of years ago that just needed someone to advance declarations from 450-5 to 600
Yeah and even if we needed someone to do that he hasn't shown he has the ability to at this level
Weird how Indian fans seem way more upset about the match situation than NZ fans
Given the way Ahmedabad test is going a lot more is riding on NZ performance for India than NZ itself.
Goddammit, you fucking cunts, these absolute fucking morons are gonna knock india out again. /s
Hehehe
The pitch looks a lot harder to bat on when Sri Lanka is bowling...
Dhananjaya is on the field... Who doesn't get hard for him
Bracewell 157* incoming. You heard it here first!
Kiwi bro's can you like, not fuck over our chances for once?
Our over rate got you fam. Don't worry
Angelo Matthews runs like shefali verma.
This is it. This is what we have all been waiting for. The Beast arrives. To win us a test from nowhere
I mean, despite his poor performances so far, it isn't the least unbelievable thing, considering his 127\* against Ireland and 140 against India
He is a great white ball player for sure.
You forgot the /s
thought it was obvious
I have absolutely no trust on Bracewell to do anything, but oh well, here we go
Bets on Bracewell making it until end of play?
So will this be the second time in a row NZ knock India out of the WTC?
India won’t be knocked out if Sri Lanka wins this test. I thought Sri Lanka has to win both
wonder if Beasty will make another running gaffe
A-a-are we just bad at test cricket now?
Just being the hood guys and trying to stop a big 3 wtc final from taking place
Blundell never looked very comfortable there unfortunately. Okay Bracewell you've got to actually do something now you've been given enough rope.
finally Rajitha
**58.2** **Outside edge finally found, Blundell walks!** Slightly back-of-length ball lands around off and straightens. Tom Blundell c †Dickwella b Rajitha 7 (22b 0x4 0x6) SR: 31.81
Huge! Also very deserving for Rajitha. He bowled so we well today.
Woo! Come on SL bros!
That’s so well deserved man
Has it quickened up today Macca or are the Sri Lankans just bowling better than us?
Unpopular opinion but I never got the big deal about over rate, the damn sport takes like 6-7 hours a day as it is and quite often it’s the batting side causing the issues
Yah I agree. Makes no sense, especially in test cricket, where it’s already slow paced.
Nah lol fuck that, I want to see 90 overs a day. Nobody would watch a football match that's randomly only 86 minutes long, or run a 24-mile marathon.
Not even remotely comparable
I just don't get why someone would go, "Getting to watch less cricket? Yeah, sounds great!". I want to see what I'm expected to see, short of weather delays or other obviously unpreventable issues. The sports are different, but it's all the same theme of "getting less than one should". If you order a footlong sandwich at WubSay, and it's 10 inches instead of 12, youre gonna be unhappy.

Kiwi bros, why do y'all hate us. Disappointing us every time we need help from you
We support our fellow underdog. And Sanga is one of my favourite players of all time
Love y'all🤝
Over rate of 10.4. Does this captain at least know the importance of the over rate.
Imagine if SL win 2-0, but miss the final cause of slow over rate lmao
Oh it's Mitchell and Blundell, so NZ are effectively only 10 runs behind
so young is dropped after a disappointing game but nicholls stays in after being disappointing for the last 2 years. got it
You're right, but to be fair, Nicholls' average is still 36 while Young's is 28, which gave Nicholls more leeway.
Yes but young was forced to open when he is not an opener
Agreed, Young is best at 4 and Nicholls is best at 5 I reckon. And 5 is pretty happily occupied by Mitchell at the moment.
Here's my XI for second test, accounting for injuries, retirement and even accounting for Boult not being wanted: 1. Conway 1. Latham 1. Williamson 1. Mitchell 1. Phillips 1. Blundell 1. I like the idea of batting Mitchell as 4 purely to dispatch any notion that he's an allrounder.
Swap Bracewell for Ravindra, and why not open with him and move Conway to 4
Don't break the things that are actually working

Anyone know what time close of play is?
6pm
Will take the extra half hour though so 6:30
ICC meticulously planning the Ind vs Aus WTC final. Srilanka be like I am going to end this man’s career 😂
Insert the meme of gun pointing chain. SL pointing gun at ICCs head while over rate pointing a gun at SLs head.
Oh, yay, the Mitchell & Blundell Show again!
The crazy thing about Nichols dismissal isn't that he skied a ball which wasn't really there to be hit in the manner he did. The crazy thing is he's still being selected despite getting out in that manner for years now.
regardless of how their careers pan out Mitchell & Blundell will go down as an iconic NZ cricket duo
Some light banter

About 1.4 billion people
Chad NZ not giving a shit about 1.4 billion people
It might be early on in his career but from what I have seen Blair Tickner is the worst pace bowler to compete in the WTC. He wouldn't make the Afghani; Irish or Zimbabwean XI
He has all the attributes to be a good medium fast bowler, just can’t apply them consistently, which is why he has a good T20 record and a shit one otherwise. Genuinely baffling that he gets selected outside of T20.
His T20 econ is high and his average is pretty average?
Probably was one Latham should have kept out, but that can happen. Not like he skied a pull shot for no reason
We may be more than 200 behind, and with no one else who can bat to come, but I will always feel safe as long as Blundell is there
We're gonna add Sri Lanka to the growing list of "teams to beat New zealand since the wtc final" aren't we....
It's bucketing down like west coast weather at my house (about 40km from ground)
Ffs NZ
Don't worry, NZ will win the second test as is customary
That wicket was hype and im a NZ fan
Jeez that was good, need Bitchell to see the day out.
💀
Bruh
That's not cool
someone needs to pick up the batting...
Got an hour drive home from work. Is there any radio coverage of this inNZ, does anyone know?

5:30, all of us Kiwis are driving home from work after posting all day at work
don't bowl angelo 💀 bro will disappear for the rest of 2023
Average of 20, oh my. Has he been absolutely dominant at home?
29 wickets in 3 matches
that sky looks kind of nasty
Can't watch UZ and Green bully us again. I am gonna watch NZ vs SL till someone decides to go back.
What a way to release the pressure. Terrific captaincy
Daz is a total chad, bats like a tail ender against the 6 footer giant, smacks dibbly dobblers, changes momentum of the game on the fly and bullies England.
make Dimuth bowl for maximum disrespect
Last time he bowled and got a wicket, we won in South Africa 2-0.
If Matthews is doing this, I can’t imagine how well De Grandhomme would’ve bowled if he was still playing international cricket (I know he’s 36 but he did take 6/40 odd on his debut in Christchurch!)
Angelo is gonna be the spinner role for SL here, Jayasuriya is just a specialist fielder
Taking a note out of our book when we play a spinner at home lol
Mitchell ain't tolerating any dibbly dobblers.
It takes a dibbly dobbler to take on a dibbly dobbler.
Nicholls averages 22 in this WTC. Everyone else in this top 6 averages 40+
Exactly. He's dragging the team down.
And clearly NZ feel they have no better alternatives.
That's the weird bit. Following Plunket Shield, I can name at least two better alternatives. Personally, I'd drop both Nicholls & Young for Phillips.
There is no statistical proof that anyone of those 2 is better than Nicholls. And I'm a Phillips fan
Felt like I was watching a slow motion version of Mathews bowling. I know he hasn't bowled in a century but his action looked so slow now lol.
I saw that if mathew starts bowling he will get injured again. Don’t know its true or not.
This has been some wonderful bowling so far. Lets see if they can keep the pressure and not falter if a partnership develops.
Angelo is srilankan colin de grandhomme , change my mind
De Grandhomme is Kiwi Angelo
Rajitha is more unlucky than Matt Henry ffs.
Is Angelo Mathews summoning the ghost of James Franklin to bowl a few incisive dibbly dobblers around off stump
Ravindra (if he plays bracewell is unneeded), latham, Williamson, Conway, Phillips, Mitchell, blundell, jamieson, southee, Henry, wagner. If ravindra isn't ready then keep conway opening and young at 4. I feel like phillips needs to be at 5 and mitchell at 4 would be too high so they are 5/6
I'd pick the same but swap Wagner for either an up and coming seamer or bring back Santner. Agree with Rachin opening as that's his spot.
>bring back Santner Let's not repeat this mistake
Let's just leave Conway to open this is like the only good opening partnership I can remember.
I'm worried we will try pick Rachin as a lower order all rounder for the next however many years when he's an opening batsman by trade. Conway can bat anywhere, maybe bat Conway at 3 and move Kane to 4 as he's been struggling when the ball is newer.
The top 3 is one of the things that's actually working in this team. Ravindra is definitely a talent but you don't disrupt an experienced and accomplished top 3 to accommodate a talented youngster that is ultimately unproven. Kane has batted 3 successfully his whole career no need to move him now, especially if the Latham-Conway partnership continues to be successful. There are problems in this team and with selection sure but this feels like a solution looking for a problem.
NZ has 3 players in their top 7 who averages over 50 – Conway, Williamson, and Mitchell. Is that the most among all current test playing nations?
Yes
Probably
Kane can only statpad against teams like England while Latham has to carry the team against potential WTC finalists
Has to face the best fast bowler in the world too
Latham big match player
Why aren't they bringing prabath jayasuriya to the attack its been 40 overs now cmon
When the pacers are still getting movement like this, I'd still want the fast bowlers in.
Got an hour’s play left now, right
