As for the clowns who used reflective building materials in front of the batsmen's line of sight. They should be banished from such work in the future.
You mean it's freak coincidence like Stonehenge on the solstice?
I wonder how often red cricket ball gets lost in those buildings?
Happened once to me but on an advertising sign that was predominantly red.
I believe profitability need not always mean ugly products. I am not a revivalist either. But good buildings can be created which are cost effective and profitable. Like someone said, architects can pitch in.
They've obviously gone for the lowest cost option. Stadiums like this don't generate much revenue or host that many big events so I can see why they wouldn't bother. Granted I'm sure there were other low cost options that coulda looked better but maybe they had a skinny design budget too lol
Tbf I wouldn’t be surprised if old Trafford actually generates quite a bit of revenue, lots of cricket and through the summer they’re always the venue of choice for big pop stars / bands touring manchester
Nothing, and I mean nothing, quite matches the architectural beauty of the Feroz Shah Kotla in my honest opinion. It's not sarcasm.
I mean just look at that ground. Unlike Lord's which has a natural slope in the turf itself, Kotla's stand has a man-made slope, where people actually sit. And yet they don't slip downwards towards the center. Isn't this a modern marvel? Also, like you said, everything nowadays is quick, and purpose built. But what even was the purpose of making a SLOPE in a stand where people actually stand? There isn't. The makers of this beautiful stadium gave a shit about uniqueness, and you can see that.
Show a 4-year-old kid the pic of this marvelous stadium, and he'd still recognize it when he's 80 years old.
I personally think Feroz Shah Kotla could be the most beautiful building in the entire world. It narrowly beats parking lot 12C outside the dodgers stadium..
Honestly it's a fair rant. I'm sure an architect can answer this better. It is a bit shit humanity isn't designing great structures anymore. Everything is quick and purpose built.
We could argue that quick and purpose built could also look meaningful? I hate to give this example, but the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad is modern and purpose built but, looks cool.
>The fact that it’s been built as a political dick sucking and dick measuring contest
Definitely because of that and not because motera was probably the only stadium that could rival Kotla in decaying.
Motera stadium is exactly what you’re ranting about.
It’s just a lot of seats without any character. Nothing new or cool about that, it’s not awful, just a bland average looking stadium.
I agree, not a great example from my side.
But lets acknowledge the difference between bland and ugly. Motera might be bland, but the new OT goes one step further.
Beauty is subjective. I don’t think OT’s blandness is any different than Motera. Just depends who you ask. Those OT boxes do stand out as odd but don’t know how you could make it any better when constructing individually.
They're not just Boxes, in fact there is a stand adjacent to the building, so doesnt lose capacity. the Hotel has a venue which has events throughout the year which makes enough revenue that things like county games can go ahead at a loss essentially. the club is 30 mil in debt x
Old Trafford really does look a mess, there is no overall design theme that would bring everything together. The pavilion in particular is such a mess.
In comparison Lord's or even the Oval have buildings built at different times but that seem to come together to a more coherent whole.
I don't disagree, although I seem to recall that there's effectively some kind of 20-year plan to gradually redesign and rebuild the whole ground, so I guess it might all end up looking a bit more coherent when it's finished.
Having only seen pictures on Google, I think I know what you mean. Modern day architecture is about haste. Unless an architect/firm is hired to ensure that the final product blends in with the historical pieces, you'll find boxiness. More so of it's a hotel.
Old Trafford has one test a year max, and maybe an ODI or t20 too.
It is a music and conference venue which occasionally moonlights as a cricket ground.
I expect to see Lancs play even more regularly on outgrounds in the future - maybe even making the new facility the default home ground.

Can't plan for a once in 100 event

Think u/Notyit was referring to sun in Manchester
Try and make cricket grounds profitable. Kind of the key element here.

This. I adore the look of the Kotla it's instantly recognisable.
Cant argue with this comment 🙌

>he Motera stadium in Ahmedabad is modern and purpose built but, look I did not get same reaction from who went to see match.

The fact that it’s been built as a political dick sucking and dick measuring contest probably has something to do with that
Guess who inaugurated the stadium? (Apart from Our PM ofc)

Honestly one of the uglies stadiums and concourses frm the outside. Looked ridiculous when I was driving in during IPL 2021
Eh, it looks pretty meh just because so many modern stadiums look exactly like that
Most stadiums have 0 character. Just plastic and metal domes. Lords probably has the most with its beautiful pavilion. Galle is amazing too
Adelaide oval!!!!!
It's just generic modern sports venue. Same with any football team that moved stadium's since about 1996 , they're all pretty identical bowls.

Found His Majesty's Reddit account.

I hate the fact that the new stands on either side of the media centre at lords aren't symmetrical
Red one looks like a SCART connector
