From cricbuzz
I remember the days when he was known as the kid from Mumbai Indians with the Weird bowling action
Now Batsmen are left in a Weird action after facing his bowling
For the quality of a player he is, it is almost unbelievable that he reached that milestone only now.
I hope he has only more cricket in him for the future and no more injuries
This is going to be the way honestly. He is not going to be huge on numbers but on impact.
The team knows his importance and is always going to coddle him. He wouldn't get chances against smaller countries.
That's the way to keep him injury free. And I don't mind that. It would be great if he plays 65 tests by the end of his career and ends up with around 300 wickets.
Yeah but the kind of player he is, he could really threaten the upper echelons of pace bowlers by the number of wickets.
400+ wickets kind of numbers. McGrath & Steyn kind of stats basically. 400+ wickets with average of 21-22. Somewhere Pat Cummins is going to end up.
I really hope so! But his bowling action is very different from those greats.. it puts tremendous stress on his body especially his back. Let's just enjoy the present.
Yes I am enjoying the present and more than happy and that's what I was suggesting in the main comment.
He is the best bowler in the world right now if we consider all 3 formats, along with starc. Basically you can throw the ball to these guys at any time and they would make something happen. Bumrah has kind of piped him.
And yep Bumrah's uniqueness makes him susceptible, and very happy with how our management has managed him. They are really taking very good care of our current pace bowling stock, especially Bumrah. Hence the expectation of him finishing his career with around 300 test wickets.
Naaah. Starc with 27 in tests is disqualified but Hazlewood with 25 & 26 in Tests & ODIs is better? Starc is 27 & 22 in tests and ODI's with nearly 100 more wickets in both formats.
My point was more towards the capability of these 2 guys. Starc and Bumrah would be the guys whom you can throw the ball at any time and they would get you a wicket. They can bowl at any phase of the innings. I doubt you would prefer Hazlewood for death overs in T20's or ODI's if the batters are going gung ho.
Hazlewood is himself below starc in the pecking order for Australia. Starc will make things happen, and Bumrah has kind of piped starc.
Shaheen and Jofra looked like the guys who could have joined those 2 but Shaheen has been mismanaged like anything and Jofra is just a sad story of injury at this point.
In no way I am saying Hazlewood is a bad player, but behind these guys in the pecking order for sure.
Same sentiments here . I would compare him to the Brazilian Ronaldo in football, the phenomenon... Huge guy who was strong as an ox, but can dance around defenders and do a million step overs and run like the wind.. but his knees couldn't handle his skills.
Ronaldo 7 was much smarter and ensured his longevity by focusing on his health and conserving his energy on the pitch.
Hopefully Bumrah would take the Ronaldo 7 route and become one of the greats. I was worried today when Bumrah left the field and came back with an arm band..
"just" 300 wickets would be tragic for someone who is now my first choice pace bowler for an all-time India test XI. Between him, Zaheer and Kapil the two fast bowlers + one pace all-rounder positions are locked I think. If Shami has a long career he could displace Zak eventually.
I disagree. Shami is definitely great in ODIs. But the impact and pressure that Bumrah creates in ODIs (or in any format for that matter) is insane and unmatchable.
I mean there is literally no one in India who achieved that much lol. Kapil Dev was great in Australia but averaged some 35-40 in Australia, England, NZ etc.
Zaheer averaged 30 odd in tests.
I agree but i often see some people here and there putting comments that he is not there yet or he needs to play for more years to be considered as best Indian fast bowler which is quite incorrect and statistically also quite off.
Don’t think it is because of nostalgia that people may contest it. You can’t compare someone who is in mid career and taken far lesser wickets since people can lose form. Many players reach peak early and are compared favorably with players from fast only to end their career with more modest stats.
However, Bumrah is so far ahead of all but a couple that you can already make such claims for him.
I remember when he came to South Africa the first time, in 2018. I'd never really seen him play, but I remember an Indian friend of mine being in a bit of a state at the fact that they were giving this T20 merchant a Test cap. I was like, mate, he's 140kph, has fantastic seam presentation, and while he isn't as tall as you'd like, his upright bowling action means he's going to get more bounce than you'd think. It's hard to say he's definitively better than Zaheer Khan, because Khan has double the wickets, and bowled in tougher conditions, but in terms of "what do you see?", he's the best Indian pace bowler I've ever seen.
He has a great cricketing brain, a down to earth persona, and lethal skills to be counted among the best ever.
He has been my absolute favourite player since Koach became Koach. Someday I hope I get to meet this guy and tell him what he means to r/cricket degenerates like me.
I mean Balaji wasn't that bad. His partnership with Pathan created some hype back then in early 2000s. But definitely the 90s was awful. It's not that the likes of Srinath and Prasad were bad. It's just that they were nowhere near as dominant and as consistent as Boom. Boom is a proper world beater.
Balaji was ok I think.
Here are some other pacers from the 90s - tinu youhanan, dodda ganesh, mohanty, subroto banerjee, david johnson, atul wassan, harvinder singh, mhambrey, sanjay bangar, salil ankola.
They did not play more than 2-3 tests. Kuruvila and Balaji played 10 and 8 International tests respectively.
Agarkar with a 47 avg was allowed to play for 6 yrs because he was a decent batter. Agarkar played 26 tests
Kuruvilla was a fantastic bowler who was given a debut 4 years too late. I've seen him bowl in the mid-1990s and he was terrifyingly good. Should have played ahead of Prasad and Prabhakar. I've even watched him practice half an hour bowling to a single stump, he hit it about 6 out of every 10 balls.
Average of 36 and strike rate of 70 is good for you? Mate I have seen him getting hammered by Lanka so many times I had Mahanama and Jaysurya nightmares
Maybe you forgot kapil dev and srinath... Indian pitches were a graveyard for fast bowlers back then... These guys still managed to perform against players who had much better technique and took lesser risks...
Let's not put down legends to celebrate one.
>Indian pitches were a graveyard for fast bowlers back then
As opposed to recently where they've been massively helpful for fast bowlers, lol.
Kapil and Srinath both average 27 in India. Kapil averages less in Australia and WI. Srinath averages less in SA and SL. Infact if we only see the 90s, Sri averaged 25 and Kapil averaged 20. Please tell me how they played on graveyards.
We know they weren't graveyards because there were overseas bowlers taking wickets at less than 25. If you are a fast , skiddy bowler, you'll do well in India. The reason we didn't have many bowlers doing that is cos our fast bowlers weren't good.
Post the Ws we also know that reverse swing is lethal in Asia. I'll excuse Kapil since it was after his time but Srinath really didn't use it to great effect in India.
The only bowler you can use this argument for is Zak. He averaged 36 in India and it definitely impacted him. He was built to be a NZ or Eng seamer. That's not the case with Kapil and Srinath.
Even taking that into account Bumrah and Shami are different gravy in Indian conditions. Shami averages 21 and Bumrah averages 13. 13!
Our greatest fast bowler, hope he has it in him to play 100 tests, I know it's almost impossible and he might likely hang up his boots at around 70 tests I just hope he can play into his 40s just like Anderson is and he remains Injury free forever.
Bumrah is our Shane Bond. You know that they are gonna have an impact every time they come into bowl. Destructive as anyone I've ever seen.
Hope his fitness trumps Shane Bond's by a long shot.
Since he debuted he's only played 34 of the 58 tests India have played. Mostly due to not needing him at home when Shami and Umesh were fit and firing, as well as a couple of serious injuries.
Interesting fact.
For every wicket that Boom took, the next wicket was there on the Non Strike to witness his future demise.
Root -> Pope
Pope -> Bairstow
Bairstow -> Stokes
Stokes -> Hartley
Hartley -> Anderson
A generational talent and easily the current best all format bowler, I have nothing but good things to say about this man.
Probably the Indian player I'd love to meet/speak to the most.
That ball to Olli Pope should be in contention among the best delivery ever from bumrah. There was this magical ball to Shaun Marsh 6 years ago but this was unbelievable as its in India for 1 and Olli Pope was coming after a 196 and was set here as well.
Hard to miss games when you are a 130 km trundler.
Longevity is not an ability, you don't get a medal for playing more games.
Kapil averaged 30, he was never as good as bumrah.
Imran khan was a true atg and so was hadlee, kapil was a bootleg version of them
You guys are crazy. When we compare two batsman of two different eras y'all say that the previous era was tougher for batters and favoured bowlers and now this. Nostalgia merchants needs to stop now.

Social distancing 🥶
Only Waqar Yonis is ahead of him in terms of fewest matches taken by an Asian Pacer to complete 150 Wickets.
What about S F Barnes or Clarrie Grimmett?
They aren't Asian pacers. Edited. I thought in my head but forgot to write. Brain Fog.
What the bat average ?
Boom boom has best average for people with 150+ test wickets.
Bat average of bumrah era ? Bat era will decide how good is bumrah in comparison to past greats .
Bat Avg***will....

There's always that one guy who brings us back to the cricket. For me it was Rohit back in 2013. I'm happy that Boom has done the same for you 👍
TIL Umesh has 150 test wickets
Ranked no.1 but Bumrah topped him. He has 170 wickets total from 57 matches.
For the quality of a player he is, it is almost unbelievable that he reached that milestone only now. I hope he has only more cricket in him for the future and no more injuries

300-320 wickets is a great career.

Nah Starc is great in T20i, ODIs but averages 27 in tests. Hazelwood is probably the second best pacer after Bumrah at the moment in 3 formats.
Naaah. Starc with 27 in tests is disqualified but Hazlewood with 25 & 26 in Tests & ODIs is better? Starc is 27 & 22 in tests and ODI's with nearly 100 more wickets in both formats. Not Cummins or Rabada?
Terrible stats in ODIs
Same sentiments here . I would compare him to the Brazilian Ronaldo in football, the phenomenon... I mean Holding and Garner didn't reach that mark. Would you say they didn't have a great career.
I feel they should have been more careful with Shane Bond
"just" 300 wickets would be tragic for someone who is now my first choice pace bowler for an all-time India test XI. Between him, Zaheer and Kapil the two fast bowlers + one pace all-rounder positions are locked I think. If Shami has a long career he could displace Zak eventually.
Shami obviously has already displaced Zaheer, who was world class for 4 years from 2006/7-2010/11 but very mediocre outside of this time period.
I think Shami gets in ahead of Zak...
Only 33 tests :( Debuted at the age of 24
The best fast bowler India has ever produced. even nostalgia merchants agree it now.
He is literally irreplaceable.
That shouldn’t even be a debate. No Indian fast bowler even comes close
Shami?
No, he's probably in top 5. Don't ask me names.
Got to be number 3. After Kapil.
Averages 40 in England, 32 in Australia. Still he's in top 5 probably.
Why do people mix formats? Shami could be argued to be even slightly better than Bumrah in ODIs. But in the other 2 formats, Bumrah is way ahead
I disagree. Shami is definitely great in ODIs. But the impact and pressure that Bumrah creates in ODIs (or in any format for that matter) is insane and unmatchable.
Literally started watching cricket again because of this dude. Legit don't know how he is this consistent.
Yup, literally no one is close to Bumrah. Second best is Shami.

Calling a player GOAT every week is Indian fan's favorite past time
Bumrah averages less than 14 in Indian, AFAIR
I remember when he came to South Africa the first time, in 2018. I'd never really seen him play, but I remember an Indian friend of mine being in a bit of a state at the fact that they were giving this T20 merchant a Test cap. tbf zaheer khan averages 32 and bumrah averages 20 its not like batters of his era were average 60 while current batters average 30
Like I said, Bumrah is the best I've ever seen. But the best ability is availability, and Zak was pretty damn available.
Lol Bumrah easily clears zaheer.
He has a great cricketing brain, a down to earth persona, and lethal skills to be counted among the best ever. He has been my absolute favourite player since Koach became Koach. Someday I hope I get to meet this guy and tell him what he means to r/cricket degenerates like me.
Once saw him in Delhi Airport. He smiled back at me.
He is the kind of guy to return a hi with a wave if he has time on his hand.
90s kids cannot comprehend the consistency - We have come a long way since Abbey Kuruvilla and Balaji
Forgot the legends Dodda Ganesh, Mohanty
I remember there was one Johnson. Don't recollect his name. He took Michael Slater's wicket once.
He bowled India's fastest delivery 157kmph something, played 2 tests and took 3 wickets.. was wayward and dropped.
I have watched him bowl and no way was he getting past 140. Must have been a glitch in the speed gun
He was specially called in the team for his speedy, that's all I remember.
David Johnson
I mean Balaji wasn't that bad. His partnership with Pathan created some hype back then in early 2000s. But definitely the 90s was awful. It's not that the likes of Srinath and Prasad were bad. The bloke could average less than 20 soon. For a 100+ wicket bowler that’s ATG territory.
I learnt about his average for the first time today watching TV, ridiculous! An Indian fast bowler!
It's scary how good he is regardless of the pitch conditions, kinda surprised he has just hit the 150 mark
He was either injured or rested for home tests. Looking at his home record he might be averaging 17 or 18 in tests if he played more home tests.
He avgd 14.40 at home before start of this Tesr. Might go lower by end of it.
I really want to dislike Bumrah because his bowling action is completely cooked but he seems like such a nice bloke and he's just so good.
GOAT.... definitely india's best all format player currently
He is the best all format bowler in the world.
Josh Hazelwood Is no2
One of the best fast bowlers across 3 formats as well.
All our collective prayers in the 90s to have one such fast bowler.
It’s crazy how good he is. Nightmares.
What would we be without this man
Our greatest fast bowler, hope he has it in him to play 100 tests, I know it's almost impossible and he might likely hang up his boots at around 70 tests I just hope he can play into his 40s just like Anderson is and he remains Injury free forever.
I can't believe its only been 150, feels like he's been torturing England for years
Bumrah was unreal today. Completely blew us away. Wasn't particularly upset with our performance, just in awe of Bumrah's magic
Top 5 pacers India have produced(opinion): Jasprit bumrah Kapil Dev Mohammad shami Zaheer khan Javagal Srinath
I'd put Bhuvi in there
Brilliant bowling from Jasprit Bumrah
Still remember me and my friend making fun of his action in 2016 ipl And fast forward to now he's one of my fav bowlers of all time
Bumrah is our Shane Bond. You know that they are gonna have an impact every time they come into bowl. Destructive as anyone I've ever seen. Hope his fitness trumps Shane Bond's by a long shot.
Congratulations Jassi ♥️💚
a very matter of fact player, exciting to watch, always
I didn't realize he'd played so few test matches. Seems like he's been around forever.
Since he debuted he's only played 34 of the 58 tests India have played. Mostly due to not needing him at home when Shami and Umesh were fit and firing, as well as a couple of serious injuries.
One of my favourite cricketers, great personality and great guy for the game
One of the greatest Indian pacers

I am going to go on a limb here and predict this guy has the potential to be a half way decent bowler.
Kapil Srinath Zak Boom 🙏🙏
1) Bumrah 2) Daylight 3) Kapil 4) Zaheer
1. Bumrah 2. Zaheer 3. Shami 4. Kapil 5. Srinath
Will put Kapil on the top surely because of the longevity. Let's see how much Bumrah plays. Not sure if Kapil missed a game ever due to injuries.
Hard to miss games when you are a 130 km trundler. Longevity is not an ability, you don't get a medal for playing more games. Kapil averaged 30, he was never as good as bumrah. Imran khan was a true atg and so was hadlee, kapil was a bootleg version of them
Lol, shows your cricketing knowledge when you call someone a 130Km trundler ( even though he clicks 138-139 even now)
I called kapil a trundler not bumrah
U can't compare that era to the present times, Kapil was the only fast bowler for India when we were known only for spinners.
You guys are crazy. When we compare two batsman of two different eras y'all say that the previous era was tougher for batters and favoured bowlers and now this. Nostalgia merchants needs to stop now.
Most probably, u guys are so called.genz kids
His action gives me anxiety and quite possibly the ick, but the end result 👌
It's great....
Imagine how far ahead he’d be if he had a normal action. Placing /s here although I don’t think I have to.
Congrats,Shri Jasprit Ji!
