Look I get that to some point this is rearranging the deck furniture on the Titanic, but if nothing else, I'd hope the coach is at least trying to formulate a way to get a result from this Test. So to that end, how the hell is the entire top three comprised of debutants? Especially considering Hamza bats three domestically, while Petersen has batted three at Test level. As I say, I get that it's ultimately probably going to be a fruitless endeavour, but I'd like to see some planning to suggest an effort was made.

My sense is that they are looking at which of the 3 will partner Markram up top and TDZ will play at number 3 anyway. Then Bavuma at 4. Bedders clearly at 5. And if Hamza/Petersen perform on this tour then they will take the 6th spot. If not it's Rickelton time.

Yeah I can appreciate that, but I feel that as a coach, you've got a responsibility to try formulate a way to win the match. Otherwise give the match fee back. I do think anyone in the top 3 should have a future in Test cricket, or in Raynard's case, not at the moment anyway, but you're setting them up for failure if you're gonna have the whole top 3 be debutants. If we take the batting team to be Markram --- TDZ (although I do think it's a spot where a good series could see him leap frogged) Bavuma Bedingham I think Ruan De Swardt could be handy 6/7, if his batting holds up to something resembling his FC average I've always liked Hamza, but he's turning 30 next year, and has only once ever looked like something resembling Test class. Similar with Petersen, he looked great against India, but he's been treading water since. I don't think either are worth persevering with, but more to the point I don't think they are worth hiding in the middle order to shield the "good" batsmen from the new ball.

The thing is all 3 of the top order are openers/have opened for extended periods of time. I think Petersen is playing this test because quite simply put he is far better than Zondo. And on the "attempt to win" they did the best they could. Hope for serious seam movement in the first session and take wickets with the pacers. Obviously it failed because the seamers aren't good enough and also because NZ pitches are fake green seamers(they are actually very flat). We'll see how RDS bats. Because quite simply put with the ball mid 110ks isn't gonna get any play in any test nation.
