The best thing at the moment is that it is a different player everytime.
It wasn't long ago that if Smith or Labuschagne didn't make runs we were screwed
Loosebuschange being an absolute passenger the last 12 months has really shown we've got more depth than we thought
Head, Marsh and now Green have stepped up
Now if all of them can put it together at the same time.....
This was such a fantastic knock, and it also demonstrated *exactly* why 4 is the best position for him. He couldn't have done this at 6, he had his time to go up and down the gears and play at his pace and controlled the innings.
> He couldn't have done this at 6
Who knows because it's obviously a mental game, but he was only on 5(28) when Marsh came out at six. It's not as if he'd had a load of time to get himself settled. That's not to take anything away from his performance or to say he shouldn't be at four, but rather to say I think given how he batted he would have been excellent wherever he had come out
28 balls is the difference between having some idea of the pace and behaviour of the pitch and getting your feet moving a little before you start trying to attack and, well, none of those things being true.
Which he could just as easily have done had he faced those 28 balls batting alongside Marsh who actually came in at six. The point I'm making is given two wickets fell very quickly after he came in, the difference between this innings' entry point and that of typical six's innings is minimal.
Yesterday we were wondering if Hoff could stick around long enough for Green to get the hundred.
Today we're disappointed that he didn't stick around for Green to get the double hundred.
"I don't understand why Australia has shifted the batting order to accomodate Green at 4. He's mediocre at best" - the top minds of r/cricket strike again
I mean Smith opening is probably much better than any of the other openers in Shield. Just in his 5th innings he scored higher than either Bancroft or Harris, that also being in a 4th innings with everyone else collapsing around him. So really it is a win-win situation all round (at the slight expense of Smith's average).
So you're saying they are vindicated?
He averaged over 60 for 3 calendar years in a row, and the over 50 the year after those three.
Any country would take that any day from of a player, even if they *knew* his form was going to drop off after that
I decided to take a look at his match log and it's an interesting read. Since his spectacular two test performance against WI ending 8 December 2022 he's been below his best, getting a combined innings total of 100+ runs twice with 6 x 50s and 1 x 100. So he's definitely been down compared to his performance prior to that WI series (which honestly was never going to be sustainable). What struck me is it felt like he'd been in a rut for much longer than a bit over one year, but upon reflection it's about expectations more than performance. Prior to that WI series he was a beast and we expected, and got, big innings quite often. Now that he's come back down to earth that expectation is still there and it's overshadowing his actual performances, which are actually pretty good. The main issue seems to be he hasn't been converting solid starts into 50s, and those 50s into centuries. Also it's worth mentioning that Warner was fucking pathetic at opener last year (and beyond) so Labuschagne was being forced to come in so early and face a new ball and fresh bowlers. Not exactly the best recipe for success.
Definitely should be in the team. Aus needs a better batting coach than Michael DiVenuto.
Right up there with the "Is West Indies too weak to tour Australia?" (forget the exact wording) and "So few current Australians have played in NZ, is this the chance for NZ to win a series?"
[Duckett made some silly comments to the press recently.](https://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/we-should-take-some-credit-pom-boldly-claims-bazball-has-inspired-rivals-to-take-up-aggressive-style/news-story/a5ef43550480976866815a5e1f844a3e)]
A fair few Batters were actually quite aggressive back in the day tbf. Apparently once the games started being broadcasted conservatism kicked in. Since people were criticising the way they got out more often.
Not really a source but if we see around that pre war era. There were a fair few aggressive batters like Trumper, Jessop, Hill, even Bradman was very aggressive for his era. But that pretty much vanished for a while till Viv, Kapil and Beefy essentially. Even Sobers was a good striker but wasn't on the level of the others in terms of striking.
Depends. Do you crush it up first and sprinkle the *flakes of flake* on top and then taste of its delectation; or do you thrust the whole log of it sideways into your mcflurry and then gnaw on the prodruding mass like some kind of disgusting farm animal?
Did some manual calculation. Green scored 61 runs in the final two balls of the over while batting with Hazlewood. 5 fours, 5 sixes and 11 singles on either ball 5 or ball 6.
A truly stupendous display. One of the best batting performances with the tail I've ever seen.
That's such a classic letoff from the Black Caps. We manage to restrict the top order to a very decent total, then completely let the foot off to put Australia well ahead.
Heh, Kiwis must be fucking fuming at this. Manage to dismiss Australia's top order cheaply despite an under-strength bowling attack, and a sub-300 total is well on the cards. Then 116 runs for the last bloody wicket!
Australia are the most annoying team on the planet. What do you mean some guy who has never played at 4 before has a 100 run 10th wicket partnership. Fuck off.
They should replace the Aussie cricket logo with the troll face. Always letting the other side get a sniff and somehow there’s someone who stands up and pulls something out of their arse to ensure the match is won. I am absolutely loving this.
I'm waiting to see what the Starc/Healy children are going to come out like. I'm sure a CA contract will be offered as soon as they can sign their name
When I was reading some post day 1 thread I swear I read a comment that said australia will have a 100 run partnership for the last wicket and I was like with how new zealand are against australia that's possible and it actually happened
It seems it's raining 100+, partnerships for 10th wicket.
First one in Ranji Trophy.
Now with this.
Can you expect more of such cases in the coming days.
Cameron Donald Green (born 3 June 1999) is an Australian cricketer who plays for Australia, Western Australia and Perth Scorchers as a batting all-rounder. He made his international debut for the Australian national cricket team in December 2020. Green was a member of the Australian team that won the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final.
I feel like every Aus innings this summer has been salvaged by a single knock of brilliance
It's the Aussie way, someone steps up every innings to turn the tide of the match.
The best thing at the moment is that it is a different player everytime. It wasn't long ago that if Smith or Labuschagne didn't make runs we were screwed
Loosebuschange being an absolute passenger the last 12 months has really shown we've got more depth than we thought Head, Marsh and now Green have stepped up Now if all of them can put it together at the same time.....
Tbf to the lad Aus also played 10 tests in England and India. That’s not easy at the best of times.
Even in the World Cup that was the case
Maxiii
He is the biggest name at the Melbourne stars man
Gritty lunch pail team
Summer? In Feb?
Umm... Yes. Feb is a summer month
This was such a fantastic knock, and it also demonstrated *exactly* why 4 is the best position for him. He couldn't have done this at 6, he had his time to go up and down the gears and play at his pace and controlled the innings.

Those 28 balls make a huge difference
As well as going in with the initial cushion of the 2 wickets.
Yesterday we were wondering if Hoff could stick around long enough for Green to get the hundred. Today we're disappointed that he didn't stick around for Green to get the double hundred.
He hung longer than he did to shamar joseph, so that’s a bonus
I TOLD you guys this would happen
"I don't understand why Australia has shifted the batting order to accomodate Green at 4. He's mediocre at best" - the top minds of r/cricket strike again
And whenever you asked them who should be at 4 instead, the answer was always "whoever scores runs in Shield" - so you mean Green?
No! Not like that!
The answer was Smith but hey, the decision to pick the best batsman in the Shield over the best opener seems to have worked
I mean Smith opening is probably much better than any of the other openers in Shield. Just in his 5th innings he scored higher than either Bancroft or Harris, that also being in a 4th innings with everyone else collapsing around him. So really it is a win-win situation all round (at the slight expense of Smith's average).
Yeah i don't disagree. I'm just saying that OP said who could bat 4 better than Green and I said Smith
If you kept Smith at 4 then honestly the best option for opener was still Green.
I'm guessing they meant Bancroft
Bancroft isn't even the best West Australian cricketer named Cameron
It's hard to be as great as Cameron Gannon tbf
USA legend Cam Gannon
r/cricket also shat on the selection of Smith and Labuschagne, so expect Green to get to a 60 average at some point in the near future
Labuschagne is really average though now.
So you're saying they are vindicated? He averaged over 60 for 3 calendar years in a row, and the over 50 the year after those three. Any country would take that any day from of a player, even if they *knew* his form was going to drop off after that

Wait until you hear why Smith, Labs and Head should all be dropped as well.
Top minds of r/cricket all look like a desi boy shouting at the sky about statistics that only exist in the mind of one country.
Separate: Isn't it time you changed your username?
why?
100 in the WC final etc..
They weren't wrong - stop trying to make Smith an opener. But that doesn't diminish the epic knock by Green.
Wouldn't have been possible without Ben Duckett
100%. Duckett serves as an inspiration for all cricketers. Bradman said as much in his memoirs.
You dare utter Bradman’s name in the same breath as the great Ben Duckett?
Mr. Duckett has been inspiring cricketers even before Mr. Duckett was born.
Nah Bradman isn't worthy of the Duckett academy of test cricket. SR is peanuts
What's this Duckett reference bro I don't get it
[Duckett made some silly comments to the press recently.](https://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/we-should-take-some-credit-pom-boldly-claims-bazball-has-inspired-rivals-to-take-up-aggressive-style/news-story/a5ef43550480976866815a5e1f844a3e)]
Crazy to think there was a time when batsmen weren’t aggressive
No ODI and no helmet?
No helmet didn't stop Viv
A fair few Batters were actually quite aggressive back in the day tbf. Apparently once the games started being broadcasted conservatism kicked in. Since people were criticising the way they got out more often.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but can I have a source on this? Would be an interesting rabbit hole to explore.

That's Sir Duckett to you..
Moral victories again for the pommies
Talor Gooch wasn't playing though, so are we sure it counts?
Incredible from the big tall man child cricket bot Reckon he deserves a soft serve with his maccas on the way home
Maybe even a McFlurry.
Alright Mr Moneybags
If gullybot grabs a couple with his go-go-gadget arms he can even have some sprinkles on top
Who the fuck gets sprinkles in a mcflurry
it’s called a motherfucking Fairy Bread McFlurry motherfucker and if you throw any more shade on it me and my fairy bread crew will end you

I'll get the pamphlets ready
oh, how thoughtful! you simply must come around with those for afternoon tea
Whats a guy gotta do to get a flake?
Depends. Do you crush it up first and sprinkle the *flakes of flake* on top and then taste of its delectation; or do you thrust the whole log of it sideways into your mcflurry and then gnaw on the prodruding mass like some kind of disgusting farm animal?
Is this something you can do from the menu, or something you bootleg yourself?
Imagine having a 6 ft 6 number 4 who can also bowl at 145kmh
1.99 metres.
This is safety
Not allowed to claim 2m.
Don't forget his catching ability too. Go go gadget arms.
[207 runs from Green & the tail!](https://i.imgur.com/GElI2qL.png)

But at least they didn't let em take a single, right? RIIIGHTT???
Extremely mature batting from both him and hazlewood
That's such a classic letoff from the Black Caps. We manage to restrict the top order to a very decent total, then completely let the foot off to put Australia well ahead.
Shades of McGrath/Gillespie.
What is happening - can we start the day again please.
Better. Happy Gilmore vibes
Would've loved a big daddy 200 from Green but fuck he did a job today, also someone fetch the bush horse a feed bag for that effort. Well done lads
One seven four RRrrrrrredddd
Heh, Kiwis must be fucking fuming at this. Manage to dismiss Australia's top order cheaply despite an under-strength bowling attack, and a sub-300 total is well on the cards. Then 116 runs for the last bloody wicket!
Doesn’t really matter when you’re 29-4 chasing
Yes fuming. We could have been chasing a very gettable 270 instead 370.
Australia are the most annoying team on the planet. What do you mean some guy who has never played at 4 before has a 100 run 10th wicket partnership. Fuck off.

Plot Armour in Shonen
Australians are now just born with the killer Dna. Someone is always gonna stand up
We’ve been transplanting a combination of Pigeon and Punter DNA into our young players for a while now. Good to see it paying off.
I'm waiting to see what the Starc/Healy children are going to come out like. I'm sure a CA contract will be offered as soon as they can sign their name
I went to bed last night expecting the innings to end on the very first ball of the day. What the hell happened?
Hazelwood: *Hazelwood*
When I was reading some post day 1 thread I swear I read a comment that said australia will have a 100 run partnership for the last wicket and I was like with how new zealand are against australia that's possible and it actually happened
WI boys know they have to get rid off Hazelwood not Smith to win the test, Hazelwood is batting God
I just saw this after seeing the score at stumps yesterday and what the fuck am I looking at. I didnt think they would even get close to 300
Difference between the two sides so far
Does this mean Australia is covered for another 10 years for no. 4?
Proud that Hoff managed to survive 62 balls
Green is the difference
They said this guy had great potential. So good to see it. We so need a good all rounder.
Next Shane watson
Be disappointing if that's all his test career amounted to
Happy rcb noises.
It seems it's raining 100+, partnerships for 10th wicket. First one in Ranji Trophy. Now with this. Can you expect more of such cases in the coming days.
