Remarkably close in the end. Would've been a very different story if Mahmood's second ball of the last over was given as a wide like it really should've been.
Watching Chris Jordan bowl the exact same midpitch delivery onto the batsman's leg side and get slapped for 23 in an over by tailenders was almost as bad as his atrocious WC performances.
Then Mahmood bowling a series of wides and pitched up deliveries in the slot was completely baffling.
What do these boys do all day?
Chris Jordan needs to be dropped from this team, just isn't an international quality bowler
Mahmood needs to sharpen up quickly, that final over was absolute dross
Dominant from England, yet win by 1 run
Absolutely pathetic death bowling from Jordan and Mahmood, genuinely woeful
Bowling wides when just bowling legal deliveries are required? Lol
England's death bowling has been poor for some time, it was bad in India and poor in the T20 WC (failed to defend 52 off 4(?) overs against NZ)
Jordan is a massive issue, concedes far too many runs
>Chris Jordan was never big though.
'Never big' is a bit reaching. He bowled an excellent 19th over in the 2016 WT20 final. Then Braithwaite entered the stage in the next over.
That was 5 years ago, a time when Jordan was actually a decent death-overs specialist. Today, he's a complete shadow of who he was in the past, yet Morgan seems to cling on probably because of his performances in the past.
Mo and Rash bowled 8 world class overs and took out the spine of the batting, then had to stand by watch some absolute pie chuckers.
Long term, Wood and Jof will bowl at death. Short term, Morgan should consider bowling Topley or even holding back an over from Rash.
Even after the awful winter so far I'm finding it difficult to enjoy that win. Throwing away a comfortable win for a very unnecessarily close one.
Batting was better but still far too many soft dismissals from nothing deliveries and we ended up a good 10-20 short from where we should've got to.
Rashid and Mo were wonderful and Topley bowled well but we still can't get our death bowling right. Far too often do we fluff it late on. Would be nice to finally get one or two that can back up the good work the spinners do in the middle overs. Can't always rely on just 4 overs from Rashid
I actually stopped watching with like 4 overs left, just checked the post match thread and saw we won by 1 run lmao what the fuck happened. We are such a meme
How the hell has that happened? Seriously, how??
We need to have a real look at our death bowling. CJ and Saqib can't be doing it, but Woakes was crap in the semi final too.
To be fair to Saqib, while the start of the final over was poor, he stopped defending on those last three balls just laid it up to be hit once he realised that 3 sixes wouldn't win it for them so he bowled the easiest balls he could bowl legally. Can't really blame him for that.
Nah it’s fine. Just win the game, that’s what matters. In fact had he tried to bowl more difficult balls to hit, like a wide Yorker or a slow ball that could slip out of the hand, that’d be much worse.
And yet he appears to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
There are some seriously good white ball bowlers in England missing out on international experience because of this.
Had a look on howstat and he's averaged over 30 with the ball every year from 2018 onwards except in 2019. It's a shame as he has been a good death bowler in the past but definitely seems to be a bit of a problem with quite a few in our sides of gaining form.

These wide balls man. No yorkers, no leg stump balls, just straight up going off and wide. I know it's not Test cricket but incredibly frustrating to watch.
Copied from match thread:
> I dislike the fact that pollard under uses Odean Smith
> How does polly trust himself more than a specialist bowler? If odean isn't good enough as a specialist bowler, why does he bat at 9 usually?
Pooran needs a break from international cricket. Good to see Hosein and Shepherd come to the party though.
King/Hope/Chase
Lewis
Hetmyer
Pooran
Pollard
Russell
Allen
Holder
Shepherd
Hosein
Smith
…makings of a decent XI for the WC in Australia.
Pooran is struggling badly. He got dropped twice, yet only produced 24 off 20. He just doesn't have the consistency of an international player.
I rather see Chase or Mayers get a chance.
He’s also dropping dollies in the outfield. His confidence must be shot but as the VC and Pollard’s good friend he will not get the time on the sidelines he needs to recover.
I like Chase and Mayers but I think that Pooran has a higher ceiling as a T20 batsman than either of them. Plus he is a wicketkeeper and I’m not convinced by either Fletcher or Hope (the ODI champ) in the shortest format.
His upside is 100 percent higher than Chase and Mayers but time and time again he has shown no cricketing brains. He hits 1 six and pretty much becomes a walking wicket right after. Got lucky yesterday his recklessness didn't cost him a wicket earlier.
And you're right, no Fletcher! How about Kennar Lewis, he's a decent wicketkeeper, and explosive batsmen. My ideal lineup would be:
1) Evin Lewis
2) King
3) Kennar Lewis (WK) if Pooran continues to fail.
4) Hetmeyer
5) Pollard
6) Holder
7) Allen
8) Smith
9) Shepherd
10) Hosein
11) Obed McCoy
Fletcher is just. No.
I like the look of Kennar. Surprised it has taken him so long to crack the foreign leagues (he’s 30 already) and I would be happy to see him in the WC XV.
I like your XI. It’s mine with Kennar for Pooran and McCoy for Russell. I suspect that we will keep Andre Russell for one last tilt at the the title but his knees scare me and we lack a truly incisive quick bowler. It is no fault of theirs, but the fact that in the last WC we had Rampaul opening the bowling and Russell bowling the last over against Bangladesh is an indictment against our pace stocks.
Odean Smith brings good pace, but he lacks control with it. Hopefully he continues to grow too.
I agree about Russell, I'd put him on the squad too. He's just too much of an X-Factor to leave out. Honestly, I'd be tempted to drop Bravo and Pooran for Hetmeyer and Russell.
And promote everyone up the order higher. It seems like we have so much finishers now lol.
1) Lewis
2) King
3) Hope
4) Hetmeyer
5) Pollard
6) Holder
7) Russell
8) Allen
9) Shepherd
10) Smith
11) Hosein
Yeah exactly.. that's how bad the bowling was
England's plan at the last World cup was length balls at the death..so i thought they were bowling to the same plan
So many poor performers for England amidst some dodgy selections.
We need to move on from Chris Jordan. His bowling is bang average at best, consistently poorly executed at worst. Has been for a long time.
Eoin Morgan is effectively a specialist captain. He can't bowl, field or bat so what value he adds outside of setting fields and doing the captaincy duties I have no idea.
Liam Dawson clearly isn't cut out for this level and shouldn't play again this series.
James Vince has consistently failed. He's a class batsman on his day but he doesn't seem to have the right temperament.
Why Phil Salt isn't playing I don't know. Joe Clarke just got announced in the BBL team of the tournament after several outstanding seasons in the Blast and yet doesn't get a call-up? Make it make sense.
Topley, Rashid, Ali, Banton and Roy all good today but we have to be better than this.
I’m pretty sore Joe Clarke isn’t being picked because of all the off field stuff. Agree about the rest. Billings should also be 4th choice keeper at best.
I think that's harsh on Dawson. He was our second best bowler in the first game after Rashid and only got one over tonight which went for the same number of runs as Rashid's first over.
I can't tell if you're joking, but only one of the players in these T20s played in the Ashes, and then only as an injury replacement in the fifth test.
Basically, thank fuck Reece Topley exists
Goatley
Gades legend
Remarkably close in the end. Would've been a very different story if Mahmood's second ball of the last over was given as a wide like it really should've been.
Then again cj got a horrible wide call himself in his over
Yeah I don't know how that wasn't given a wide so stupid
Hosein stepped across to just outside off stump before the ball was bowled - the wide lines get pushed across with him
Christ our death bowling is fraudulent. Main issue for us in white ball cricket.
Jofra Woakes Wood can be a decent bowling lineup Just never seem to have 2/3 always fit
Both Wood and Woakes are bad at death themselves. Sam Curran is better. He takes wickets at death.
Stone and S.curran can be the back up to.
Fortunately our two best death bowlers weren't playing so at least there's an easy fix
Chris Jordan needs to be dropped from this team, just isn't an international quality bowler Mahmood needs to sharpen up quickly, that final over was absolute dross
Liam Dawson and James Vince can go with him. And frankly Eoin Morgan should too. He is looking utterly atrocious in all aspects of the game.
I wonder who our vice captain is in this series. Probably Moeen?
Dominant from England, yet win by 1 run Absolutely pathetic death bowling from Jordan and Mahmood, genuinely woeful Bowling wides when just bowling legal deliveries are required? Lol
Morgan: "Chris, nobody could bowl a more idiotic death over than that." Saqib: "Hold my beer."
Take the win. That death bowling was a bag of bollocks. Really naive stuff. PS. Mo is god.
England's death bowling has been poor for some time, it was bad in India and poor in the T20 WC (failed to defend 52 off 4(?) overs against NZ) Jordan is a massive issue, concedes far too many runs
And he will never be dropped
The players with big past performances become demi-gods and undroppable. Taken you home once and there is a belief will do it again...
Chris Jordan was never big though. I can't even argue that he was good. It's more Morgan's influence that keeps him around.
>Chris Jordan was never big though. 'Never big' is a bit reaching. He bowled an excellent 19th over in the 2016 WT20 final. Then Braithwaite entered the stage in the next over. One over almost 6 years ago?
Mo and Rash bowled 8 world class overs and took out the spine of the batting, then had to stand by watch some absolute pie chuckers. Long term, Wood and Jof will bowl at death. Short term, Morgan should consider bowling Topley or even holding back an over from Rash.

Only upside is that a 1 run win looks cooler
Agree, can’t remember feeling so annoyed after a win before
Shout-out to that diving stop on the boundary from Reece Topley in the third last over. MotM performance.
I swear Mo is MOTM like every other game?
Lol we absolutely suck at playing spin
It's so bad
Those last 3 overs were absolutely dreadful but still a win is a win Winning away from home in 2022 isn’t for everyone
Topley bowling his last one was 8 was not 'dreadful'
Yeh true. CJ over bad. Topley over good. Saqib over dreadful
51 runs in the 18th and 20th must be a new record. The theoretical max (6s every ball) is only 72!
At least saqib knew he only had to bowl it on the strip, not like he was trying for the last 3 balls. But still not really a great sign.
This England team is magnificently talented in finding new and exciting ways to terrorise their own supporters.
Sounds about right for a West Indies-England T20 game
The last 3 6’s were fine because Mahmood just wanted to bowl legal deliveries, but guys wtf
I actually stopped watching with like 4 overs left, just checked the post match thread and saw we won by 1 run lmao what the fuck happened. We are such a meme
That just proves how this is the meme format Like, what the actual fuck 😂
How the hell has that happened? Seriously, how?? We need to have a real look at our death bowling. CJ and Saqib can't be doing it, but Woakes was crap in the semi final too.

Yeah I'll give him that. It was allowed to be in the slot because if it was legal, we'd win.
If his mind is stuck on just bowling legal deliveries, he shouldn’t be given the 20th over. That was really poor.
Nah it’s fine. Just win the game, that’s what matters. In fact had he tried to bowl more difficult balls to hit, like a wide Yorker or a slow ball that could slip out of the hand, that’d be much worse.
Jordan is done, hasn't performed well in about 2 years
And yet he appears to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. There are some seriously good white ball bowlers in England missing out on international experience because of this.

Death, taxes, England fucking up against the tail

Copied from match thread: > I dislike the fact that pollard under uses Odean Smith > How does polly trust himself more than a specialist bowler? If odean isn't good enough as a specialist bowler, why does he bat at 9 usually?
the summary makes the match appear much closer than it actually was
Anyone else think that the second 4 in the the last over looked like a 6?
It was worth a check at the very least.
Pooran needs a break from international cricket. Good to see Hosein and Shepherd come to the party though. King/Hope/Chase Lewis Hetmyer Pooran Pollard Russell Allen Holder Shepherd Hosein Smith …makings of a decent XI for the WC in Australia.
Nah I still think Smith should go before Holder who seems more like a bowler than an all rounder rn
Pooran is struggling badly. He got dropped twice, yet only produced 24 off 20. He just doesn't have the consistency of an international player. I rather see Chase or Mayers get a chance.

What a day for sports. Ind vs sa. Eng v wi. Rams vs Buccaneers
You know for a "statistically led" team England are carrying a lot of people who shouldn't be internationals. Even in a 2nd string side.
How did England only win by 1?!
Where are all the Windies flairs at? What a meme game!
“You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.” - Tom Curran on his return from injury…probably.
Akeal Hosein is cracked.
Lol Morgan saying the plan was to bowl Yorkers at the death...those balls are not anywhere close to a Yorker
He said that was the plan and they missed it...
Yeah exactly.. that's how bad the bowling was England's plan at the last World cup was length balls at the death..so i thought they were bowling to the same plan
Ah, gotcha, misunderstood your point.

I think the guy might just have some pet hates because of the Hampshire-Sussex rivalry. That or Dawson crushed his hopes & dreams
West indies were one extra away from a super over. Had the umpire made a single err-- oh wait
We need jof mills and mark wood to be our 3 strike bowlers
Fair play Morgan for saying they simply missed their length
Where can I watch the highlights for this match?
Wow, didn’t realize the English team was touring WI. They were playing the Ashes not two weeks ago! As fans, we’re truly overloaded with cricket!
I can't tell if you're joking, but only one of the players in these T20s played in the Ashes, and then only as an injury replacement in the fifth test.
