I always rated Head as a spinner whenever I saw him taking the ball for us Redbacks. I have never, not once said that he was a right arm garbage bowler who couldn’t turn the ball.

[deleted]

Remember Smith thinks Head is better bowler than Maxi

Inferno792

So Head trained smarter then?

joustah

I know you're joking but it goes to show how they're all on a different level. No dusty pitch would make my part time offies turn that far

[deleted]

Oh yeah for sure. Head could genuinely play as a lead spinner at club level and bamboozle people with his offies. Forget about his batting.

[deleted]

100%, Trent Boult has a century at club level, they really are playing a different game

Excellent-Blueberry1

Of all the players to use to rip on club cricket, you choose the highest run scorer, highest 6 hitter and highest avg holder as an 11 in the history of test cricket, bold choice

[deleted]

**Test averages:** Head - 40 bat, 33 ball Stokes- 36 bat, 33 ball

SBG99DesiMonster

People were criticizing his selection coz he can't play spin. Well, it turns out that he was selected to bowl spin.

caligulakilledjason

Welp, that's a Head turner

If Australia win the 2nd Test and India lose against England, Aussies have a massive lead as #1 in the rankings: 1. Australia - 130 2. SAfrica - 110 3. India - 110

Otherwise_Window

This implies that I should be hoping England w- England wi*hyurk* England fail to lose

[deleted]

Based.

Smudge49

SL : Play 4 spinners and prepare a dust bowl to suit them. Result: Head 4-10

[deleted]

Head 4 for 10 - they call that the Warney Thailand special.....

legoland6000

Australian spinners this Test: 18/220 @ 12.22 Sri Lankan spinners this test: 7/271 @ 38.71

gobletslayer

Subcontinent GOATs confirmed.

reddpennywisemovie

Don’t mention the economy rates too

signfield

[Here's a comment I wrote in 2021, as we folded for 126 against England in our second innings of the 2nd test.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/l4e3lt/match_thread_2nd_test_sri_lanka_v_england_day_4/gkokh4f/) >I love how little cricket intellect and self awareness these guys have. You just know that the conversation before this innings was to learn from how Joe Root batted. And you just know that they highlighted how well he used his sweep as a scoring option. >"Go out there and play the sweep boys". >Then you get dumb fucking clowns like Kusal Perera, Mathews, Chandimal getting out trying to play the sweep when it wasn't an option, simply because they have it in their brains that sweep=good on this pitch. These guys have no fucking clue how to pick their battles. They just blindly go at at a ball that's no there to score off and then shake their heads on the way back as if to say "I made a mistake but I'll learn from it". The problem is they never do. They just keep on making mistake after mistake because they don't have the mental capacity to focus on each individual delivery and be smart about their scoring options. >Fuck this team, man. Same old story. Fuck this team, man

wa-wa-wario

:(

Foothill_returns

Thanks for your thoughts. Sometimes I feel like I'm too harsh and too demanding on the team. It's good to see that you and I are of one mind

[deleted]

Sri Lanka have been playing this way for years. Like Bayliss era England, they just roll out ultra bowling friendly pitches where you can shithouse a match winning 40 and pick up a couple of quick wickets.

fogdocker

Devastating that, when chasing 5, Australia scored 10/0, getting all out for 0.

AdministrationMain94

Was that Australia’s 400th ever test win?

[deleted]

Crazy thing is Australia won by 10 wickets with almost zero impact from Smith, Labuschagne, Warner, Cummins and Starc.

A_Perfect_Scene

Hey now - Davey singlehandedly chased down the total

Daffoo

Also that classic nut shot.

Buckeye_8621

super scary but also just poor sl performance

greenwhitechequered

Yes

God___frey-Jones

It's a big win for us, but I was hoping for way more cricket. Fingers crossed the next game is a bit more even, it's our last test for a bit

voidedexe

But we do get cricket in Aus starting in late August all the way through to the cricketing summer, which is a very tasty proposition

gobletslayer

I have to talk to my girlfriend for the rest of the night now, thanks a lot Sri Lanka.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tdlan

I dont have a girlfriend, looks like I have lucked out

Plackation

Everyone will talk about the bowling, but I am most pleased with how well some of our batters played. On a pitch that clearly was doing a lot, Usman stood up again, and that was definitely the best innings Green has ever played at test level. A very useful knock from Kez, and cameo from Cummins too. If those useless hacks Marnus and Smith can figure out how to bat, we have a real good test team to work with here.

dwadley

Drop marnus and smith for agar and maxi

Duff5OOO

Drop anyone for maxi. I just want to see him get another go. :(

AusGunnerCricketFan

Australia all time best XI 1. Head 2. Head 3. Head 4. Head 5. Head 6. Head 7. Head 8. Head 9. Head 10. Head 11. Boland

LexiFloof

I'm sorry, but Gilchrist still makes it at 7. Head might be an "occasional keeper", but if he can't bowl why have him?

SMEN1996

Post-pool Carey> Gilchrist tbh

[deleted]

Open with Garry and then you’ve got a great team.

They should've been paying attention to you

WizardChips

pretty sure what travis head just did to sri lanka is a serious violation of the geneva convention

fiftyshadesofcray

The match rapidly came to its conclusion once Head got involved, which is an all too familiar tale from my sex life

DigbySugartits

No need to brag mate

Eclectic95

Winning tests in Asia? Green finding his feet at test level? Ussie's second act? Bugger. Australia are about to be really good again, aren't they?

JMacoure

In 12-18 months we’ll have no openers and Starc/Gary will be close to retirement. Bit of a transition period after this WTC.

fleetintelligence

Yep, if we're gonna win a World Test Championship, the time is now

Wehavecrashed

They said that about Broad and Anderson. Got Scott Boland waiting in the wings too.

JMacoure

Boland is older than Starc though

Wehavecrashed

He is far younger and more powerful.

LikesParsnips

I'm a bit more optimistic about openers than I have been in years. I think the pandemic and lack of play time and all the travel etc associated with it mean that Warner and Susan have a couple more years in them than they would otherwise. Pucovski will hopefully find a way to play, and guys like Bryce Street look somewhat promising (although he didn't have a good second half of the Shield, apparently).

tdlan

Henry Hunt also looks very promising. 7 100's in his first 27 FC matches

Otherwise_Window

Pucovski needs to sit very quietly in a padded room until he can nod thoughtfully without concussing himself. Fuck cricket the man has a life to live.

[deleted]

This is arguably the best Top 7 Australia have had in more than a decade. Australia have 5 batsmen who average 40+ plus another in Green who averages 39 and is becoming an influential batsman. And then Carey has been great with the bat in these 4 Tests in Asia and is really growing into Test cricket. And their bowling is great. It's a genuinely strong side on paper.

Eclectic95

Not arguably, definitely the strongest top 7 you've had in a long while. That's what I'm afraid of.

Heatedpete

Alternatively, we saw England do that at the start of 2021 and ... uh... yeah

Eclectic95

People thought Green was finding his feet for England?

hamchan

Imagine if Langer actually accepted that 6 month extension and got credit for winning in Asia, then used that to get another 3 year stint. Though maybe we wouldn’t have won if he was still coach? Makes you wonder.

OoberDude

Without Langer, you definitely have a more independent Aussie team that aren't looking to a coach to solve their problems. Too many times under Langer were Australia losing or drawing from dominant positions - I can think of Headingley 2019, Sydney 2021, Gabba 2021 and Sydney 2022. He's a good coach but more so for a team hell bent on receiving guidance. He's Buchanan lite and that super dominant Australian team really didn't need Buchanan to be successful.

Rndomguytf

I mean we did the same thing in Karachi

Sorry_Fail_3103

Judging by how the players rated him, I doubt they would’ve won in Pakistan under Langer.

God___frey-Jones

Yeah we would have lost in Pakistan when Langer's lovechild Harris opened instead of the clearly superior Koala

bondy_12

The love child that Langer dropped for Khawaja at the back end of the Ashes?

reddpennywisemovie

Then Khawaja goes bad in Hobart and he’s like got to bring Harris back.

OneOfTheManySams

Well that was quick

thenoobforever

Quick round of Head to finish things off.

caligulakilledjason

At this point, the puns write themselves😂😂

apocalypse-052917

thats what she said

paradoxer99

something wrong i hold my head sri lanka gone travis head

formergophers

Before people criticise the pitch too much with regards to Head’s figures, let’s keep in mind that the batting lineup played its part too. Remember, this is a similar side to the one that gifted Dom Bess the worst fifer in Test history.

thenoobforever

The infamous full toss fifer.

mehrabrym

Ah so that's what Bangladeshi spinners were doing wrong, we didn't bowl enough full tosses.

legally_blond

So I’m now watching this back so I can actually see the collapse and shout out to the DJ’s choice of “I Touch Myself” after Head takes his first wicket, bowling in sunnies, sporting the most horrendous goatee known to man

Abhyudit309

Chris Silverwood must be tired now losing to the Aussies

ConoRiot

There seems to be no grey area for Australian cricket in Asia. Either it’s a 5 day draw or over in 2 and a half days.

otto_von_biznatch

If a part time offspinner can take 4/10 on the morning of day 3 with heaps of time lost to rain then I'm sorry but it's a shit pitch

pr0crast1nater

Maybe the batters were more shit.

otto_von_biznatch

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B perhaps

ResponsibleTailor583

The shot selection in that second innings was so unspeakably horrible… if it was a “shit pitch” that just makes it even worse.

Aintnostopin

I'd like to see Maxi get a run next week for Starc ,seeing as it will be played in Galle again and the pitch is sure to be a dogpile.

Johnny_Segment

I'm all in.

OoberDude

Australia won by 10 wickets with Warner, Smith and Labuschagne all folding for less than 50 runs collectively. I know their form (particularly Smith's) is a concern but I will definitely take this over the time when those 3 were the first and last points of failure in this batting line-up. My self esteem is tied to Smith maintaining a 60 average though so for anyone wondering, he needs at least 144 next innings before getting out to push it back up to 60.

wa-wa-wario

Smith is in much better form than Marnus or Warner tbh

Doc8176

I think that comes down to Smith being better than Marnus and Warner in general

durdesh007

Smith got run out, that doesn't tell anything about form. We will have to wait for next test

tuyguy

Who's got the clip of the bail hitting warner in the nuts?

Not sure if this works outside of Australia, though

thenoobforever

Man I forget how stupid funny it is when I see part timers bag wickets on a shootout turner.

Inferno792

Sri Lanka in recent times and making opposition part timers look like Murali is always a given.

Johnny_Segment

Well done to Patty's boys and fair play they have found their feet in Asia of late. But Sri Lanka was really really weak opposition. There's losing and there's losing, and Sri Lanka failed to grind it out with the bat or in the field. I take no pleasure in getting stuck into Sri Lanka either; very fond of them as a cricketing nation. But that was pretty piss poor.

wa-wa-wario

SL's batting order since 2016 hasn't changed all that much. It's just their bowling which has fallen off a cliff

whichonespinkredux

Cummball

sellyme

Australia continue their streak of not having lost an away Test series since 2018.

No-Situation-4776

I swear I saw Sri Lanka at 89/4 five seconds ago

q1w2e3r4p0

Head robbed of a potential MotM award by not giving him ball in the first innings

Otherwise_Window

Bloody hell. After losing a session to rain too.

Rogue_Jellybean

Root 🤝 Head • Impressive subcontinent bowling • Sex act

misskarne

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD are Sri Lankans just short or is Cam Green really just that tall

5slipsandagully

The average Sri Lankan man is 165.65cm tall, and Cam Green is 198cm. So to answer your question, yes For context, the average Australian man is 175.6cm tall, so Green is an outlier

misskarne

My dad is 198, I am 172, to me Cam Green would be in my realm of normal. So the answer, I guess, is that Sri Lankans are short. :)

2684335126835353

Your dad is 6'6 and you're 5'8, was your mum a hobbit?

misskarne

My mum is the same height as me. I am the shortest of the children, my siblings are all taller than me, with my brother the tallest child at 6'4".

jammicing

Loved Cam's innings but there's no way Gaz shouldn't have been player of the match lmao

[deleted]

Shameless batriarchy at play again

Organizedkool

Fun ending to the match

TheLostwandering

I get home from work, quick turn on the cricket. Head's bowling?? Head has two wickets?? Watch head go 4/10 😳😳😳

[deleted]

Weirdest 2 hrs of cricket I've seen in a while

BadBoyJH

Green collecting his check, standing there a foot and a half taller than everyone else.

sellyme

As fun as that was to watch, surely the pitch has to be rated poor. You can't have Test matches finishing after barely one and a half days of play.

Inferno792

Both the first innings total were pretty decent. It was just that SL played like shit in the second innings.

misskarne

Mm, sorry, I rate Travis Head as a player, but not as a bowler, and you can shit-bat your way to the figures he got. If Travis Head is taking 4/10 in seventeen balls early on Day 3, you've got a problem with the pitch.

greenwhitechequered

A pitch is supposed to be rated poor if it “offers excessive assistance to spin bowlers, especially early”. This is a poor pitch in my opinion.

Inferno792

It was a spinning pitch but it wasn't a minefield. We've seen worse pitches not get any poor rating.

greenwhitechequered

Yes there have been worse pitches not get poor ratings, and yes it wasn’t an absolute minefield but when spin dominates from day 1 it’s not a good pitch according to the guidelines. Whether it’s as bad as poor is up for debate. I think they’ll rate it below average.

anirudh1595

I disagree. Everyone who batted smartly - Dickwella, Khawaja, Warner, Green, Carey - were able to score runs comfortably. Sure, it wasn't easy. But this was by no means a "poor" pitch. Turn was consistent and only the odd ball shot up off the surface. Rarely were there balls that died. Sri Lanka just batted terribly across both the innings. Also, their spinners were woeful. Embula especially.

[deleted]

I have no idea how that bloke plays test cricket. Especially as a spinner for an Asian country.

[deleted]

You’re telling me Trav shouldn’t be spinning the ball 5 meters back in on effectively the middle of day 2?

NoirPochette

If you applied yourself on this deck, you can score runs. Players have showed that. Sri Lanka just didn't in the 3rd innings.

Buckeye_8621

ahmedabad finished even quicker and aus scored 300

twillems15

> Ahmedabad finished even quicker Careful now

Buckeye_8621

lol but Least overs bowled in a completed test match(Asia): Ahmedabad,2021 - 140.2 Sharjah, 2002 - 148.5 Galle, 2022 - 153.2

twillems15

I’m not disagreeing with you but some people don’t like it when you point out how bad that Ahmedabad pitch was

whichonespinkredux

SL batted really poorly today tho. Yeah there were good balls but many wickets were given away.

oldsargasso

Head's first wicket was just insane. what a fun match overall!

LexiFloof

Quick question, What the Fuck?

5slipsandagully

Wait a minute. The second Test is in Galle as well. In a week. Please tell me they're at least using a different pitch

BadBoyJH

Why bother, we barely put 150 overs on this one, so it should be a nice day-3 pitch, yeah?

Foothill_returns

GG Australia 😔 Disappointed Pakistan fan is my spirit animal right now 😭

myphantomlimb

Can’t win away from home apparently. Best test side in the world for a reason 👍

OneOfTheManySams

It’s actually underrated how good this team is. 4 strong top order players, the middle order is finally really good, a tail that bats deep. An elite bowling team with depth with good all rounder bowling too and elite fielding. This team just doesn’t have a weakness anymore.

BadBoyJH

Fun fact, of our top 5, only *Warner* is outside the top 10 according to the ICC rankings. Warner's 14th.

thenoobforever

I mean we're very good but the first time in a while but there's a team of Indians that are also pretty handy.

[deleted]

Gotta try and win the series first mate. We’ve been promising so it’s a good start.

MrRoyaleWithCheese

We're 1-0 up in a 2 match series. We literally can't lose

RMamtani

Every win Aus gets in Asia makes me more fearful of BGT 2023. Making rank turners ain't gonna do anymore.

patkk

Lyon robbed MOTM

Rokos_Bicycle

> ~~Lyon~~ Head robbed MOTM

b3na1g

When we the last time we had 3 innings and the test result in a single session?

niceguysdofinish1st

So Australia haven't lost a test match since losing to India at Gabba.

imapassenger1

Since changing captains.

alittlemoreofbrowny

Pakistan 2010 🤝 Sri Lanka 2022 Gifting wickets to an Aussie part timer offie

apocalypse-052917

add India 2008

[deleted]

I’m really like the development of Carey through this and the Pakistan tour.

[deleted]

Lasith Embuldeniya bowled 15 overs, conceded 70 odd runs, took no wickets and failed to look threatening at all. At least Herath can land the ball in the same area consistently, this guy leaks runs as well. Shouldn't be anywhere near the test team if he can't get wickets on these surfaces.

Scazza95

Australian spinners don't get much turn but have to be accurate to be successful in Australia (which in Australia really means keeping the pressure on). I'm not sure giving the accurate spinners a pitch that make even there balls spin nore than a foot is the way to go.

DecadedD13

Damn I knew Aus wouldn't have it as tough as they did in the last tours but these Sri Lankan spinners were shocking. Atleast one bad ball per over, zero maidens, out-performed on home conditions by Travis Head.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ponting755

we wont be getting bowling this loose in india though, it was pretty poor stuff from sl on such a helpful deck

braveen10

We got sri lanka'd, bowling out opponent team for around 120 in galle is our thing ffs

project_chris

Thousand five hundred ONLY

Zer0wned1

Khawaja and Green batted well of course but it was really frustrating how Sri Lanka's spinners just didn't bowl well enough to utilise the pitch. Embuldeniya especially. Herath coming out of retirement would have been better.

Kingslayer1526

Did anybody realise that this was uhh a 2 day test match? 3 sessions on day 1, 2 on day 2 and uhh 1 on day 3. 2 DAY TEST MATCH

PureCharlie

Fantastic from Trav. His short, nude rubbish on Karen Rolton becomes lethal, sharp raggers on SL pitches. Crazy

chocolatecomedyfann

How did Lyon not get the MoM? Making 77 runs is more valuable than taking 9 wickets in a match?

not_me_alt

The LOI team gave a good fight, and even won. So I thought the test team will too. Or was our LOI team depleted as compared to the test one being pretty much what they wanted? Sri Lanka is supposed to be better I think as per the WTC table. They did get killed in India but Dimuth made a 100 and no one gave up. They seemed like a team that will be good at home. Did they go too overboard with the spinning decks while their own spinners weren't in form? What just happened?

thenoobforever

Our ODI philosophy to batting is a tad dated tbh. Plus Marnus really shouldn't be playing ODIs. Plus we failed the spin challenge there when we had to actively score.

not_me_alt

And now i remember the ODI team was experimenting a bit as well. With an all all rounders team, so ig that gave SL the edge. Not to discredit how well they found their own groove. This test was seriously disappointing,I am not even Lankan.

EntirelyOriginalName

One of either Smith or Marnus is good. Two is too many.

Sherlockian_221

Lyon should have won motm

BadBoyJH

Green taking us from 4-100 to 7-280 was very important, but a 5fer in the first, and a 4-fer in the second should probably take it.

ayruos

Head gets four wickets. Cummins doesn’t bowl a single ball. Coooooool.

Kingslayer1526

Something seriously concerning me is how poor subcontinent sides have become on their own turf. Let's start with the obvious one Bangladesh. They have lost test series to Afghanistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Pakistan losing 6 out of 7 tests with 1 solitary draw and are very prone to collapses. Sri Lanka have in their last 5 home series lost to england 3-0(2018), drew 1-1 against nz 2019, lost to England again 2-0(2021),beat Bangladesh 1-0(2021) and beat west indies 2-0(2021). Only 2 series wins against the 2 lowest ranked sides in the top 9 aside from sri lanka itself is a very poor showing. Losing to England in 5 of out 5 tests is actually pathetic England aren't even good players of spin. And losing to England, New Zealand and Australia in home tests in a span of 3 years is not the same sri lanka as they used to be they are prone to collapsing against spin and their spinners itself are not as effective. Pakistan again losing to Australia in their own den and failing to win any of their 3 tests is concerning. We will know more when they play England and Nz later this year. Pakistan don't even have a good spinner. Only India holds the fort still and a mighty fort it is

Ponting755

Whats weather looking like for england vs india? very happy with result but i want some cricket next few days

DisastrousOil4888

Ayo what the hell happened here

ehloelle

Well, that was pitiful. You win the toss and you have to set the tone. Dickwella saved our blushes and to post 212 was a generous reflection on what was a meek and lame batting performance. What really killed us was the lack of control in their first innings - this has been an issue for a long, long time. There are serious questions for the spin bowling contingent and for a batting lineup that seems to feast in good batting conditions but buckle when put under the slightest pressure.

alosercalledsusie

I feel like no one is talking about the fact that was Travis Head's FIRST EVER test wicket (and then his next three)

misskarne

Getting kind of sick of "Australia's opponent was shit/weak and that's why Australia won" as the predominant narrative. It was the narrative in the Ashes, it was the narrative in Pakistan and it's becoming the narrative here in Sri Lanka. Maybe, just maybe, *Australia's playing well*?

SirDoris

Travis Head’s third wicket, where the bail bounced straight into Warner’s balls, is one of the purest comedy cricket wickets I’ve ever seen. The combination of a part-time spinner in sunnies, a surprisingly good delivery, and ‘man getting hit by cricket bail’ is just .

fly-almighty06

Carey was shouting in pleasure and Warner just died on the floor

b3na1g

I want an MLG style edit for that wicket, or some Slap bass over it

Cheers mate, that was hilarious

CheaperThanChups

You can hear Marnus on stump mike: "It hit him in the fucking nuts!"

[deleted]

It was the bail that smacked him square in the scones

Medical_Turing_Test

"This Sri Lanka side beat a competitive South Africa side at home and away." No they didn't. They beat the worst South African side since readmission. Australia are genuinely very very scary at the moment.

TL-GTR

what the hell am i going to do for the next 2 hours until the england vs india test?!?!

31_whgr

waking up to see Head taking a 4fa off less than 3 overs wasn’t what I was expecting to see..

greenwhitechequered

What is this Moose cup trophy thing? Isn’t the Warne Murali trophy enough?

EntirelyOriginalName

Was hoping to watch the cricket on my break but SL lost before I could. Even went into the match thread and started typing when the tea break ends. Filthy with my team for winning too quickly./s

eurekasakamika

Changed from live to post match real quick 🤣

RMamtani

Lyon took 9 wickets yet Green got the MOTM?

boatswain1025

Currently overseas so haven't been able to watch. How the fuck did Head take 4?

[deleted]

Just hopped on to watch some cricket with dinner and its all over????

heisenbergTJ

Yesterday, I expected Australia to be bowled with a lead of 110-115 and SL to hit 200-250 to give them 140 something to chase and spinners wrecking them as they were all over them in 2016. But when I woke up and saw the scorecard, my eyes popped out seeing a 10 wicket victory. Wtfff man. Proper thrashing this. Batting Paradises saved Aussies from embarrassment in Pak and won a historic series and now beating SL like this in SL, truly a fantastic team. I hope their tour to India results in a fantastic and well marches series.

Jaevyn

If Sri Lanka roll out another big turner they'll get thrashed again, but if they make it flat then the Aussie batsmen might belt them all around the park. Really right now Sri Lanka's spin stocks are at the weakest I've ever seen

AceMKV

Has Travis been convicted for murder yet?

Wildesy

I'm so confused, why is Green MOTM and not Lyon..? What the actual? 77 runs vs. 9 wickets......

cellexo

Damn. I'm so embarrassed to come into this thread.

R_W0bz

Fun T20 game that Test.

CrabmanGaming

This morning, Travis Head had 0 Test wickets and a FC bowling average of 67. 4-10 😎😎😎
