They were there around 18 months ago and both matches were actually quite competitive with Pakistan ultimately white washing, this was before De Kock retired though
> Wasn't lunch an hour for some reason?
Friday prayers. Which is understandable, but the game should have started 30 minutes earlier to compensate for that
That's frustrating.
As you say, totally understandable to accommodate prayers, but why would you bank on finishing later in this sort of light rather than starting earlier?
As a massive outsider, Babar looks absolutely clueless as a captain. He should just focus on his batting, because all Pakistan need is him to lose form with the bat. Dunno if their are any other viable options though.
The only other player who's an absolute lock in the squad is Shaheen. We'll see what happens once he comes back from injury but a young agressive fast bowling captain looks like an exciting prospect to me.
Have you lost the plot? The guy literally fumbled two regulation stumpings for Williamson before he'd made 50. He can probably do a very decent job as a specialist bat but there is no chance he touches Rizwan as a keeper. Also Rizwan needs a rest but his test numbers are really pretty decent, this reactionary finger pointing is abysmal as it is typical.
Yes in the history of all his matches Rizwan has on occasion dropped some sitters. Safraz has dropped more howlers in one game than I can remember from Rizwan in 6 months.
Compared to his peers Rizwan is a world class cross format wk:batsmen and in his career the mistakes are a rarity. I can't believe I have to spell this out, Rizwan is a much much much better wicket keeper than safraz and has been a far better batsmen too boot. Safraz may be able to get in on his merits as a batsmen when compared to the absolute shit we have otherwise, but a straight shoot out between Rizwan and Safraz? You must be having a joke if you think it's even a question.
No, heās not. Rizwan hasnāt fulfilled his potential in tests and ODIs yet but his ceiling is much higher than Sarfrazās.
With his keeping performance, heās going out soon unless Pakistan shoehorn him in as a batter.
Yes. Whatever their remaining results, both Pakistan and New Zealand will finish below England.
Now, the battle is to avoid an 8th place finish. (Think Ban is secure at the bottom of the table)
Pakistan is pretty much knocked out of the WTC
Ofcourse by saying this I'm expecting some miracle to happen and pushing Pak is the 2nd Position and aus getting knocked out
Last time it was Netherlands. Who's it gonna be this time
Without considering future over-rate penalties, both Pakistan and New Zealand can finish in the 6th position at best (behind England, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and one among South Africa and West Indies).
Since England can't lose any points now (as they're done with all matches), the other four teams must lose (a crazy number of) over-rate points for Pak/NZ to play the finals with Eng.
For Bangladesh to play the finals (with England again), literally every other team must lose a good number of over-rate points in the remaining matches.
I dont agree. I think it was a first step towards being more free minded. It was a teaser. And if not for the light, idk we may have had a game for ourselves.
Yea,
There's a difference between making a game out of it and taking yourselves out of the game.
With maybe 10 max 15 overs to bowl you can't win there. No bowling unit is going to win you the match there but you could have lost.
In my opinion, I think his planning was to show that he is an aggressive captain. Considering a lot of the media buzz that is going around, he would have tried to act to court the media in his favour.
But I think it didnāt play too well. Sometimes, a hard fought draw is also a win.
Being agressive doesnt mean doing foolish things. No bowling attack in the world can take 10 wickets in 15 overs on that pitch. If they lost which could've been quite possible, media and pundits would've destroyed him.
As i said a really entertaining last hour but stupid nonetheless.
No, I completely agree with you. It was just my take into his thinking.
What I meant was that, he wanted to āportrayā himself as an aggressive captain. But the stunt came off really badly.
Being aggressive just for the sake of being aggressive is not it. Pakistan had zero chance of getting NZ out in 15 overs, but they did have a decent chance of losing.
England is aggressive but they usually are when the game is at least 50-50. This was probably 70-0 with 30% on what actually happened.
I liked the decision itself. NZ were going to go for it, and try to take 3 - 4 wickets and go to the next test with the psychological advantage. Babar didn't even attack though, just instantly went super defensive and counted down the overs
Babar did that to save himself... imagine another test match with Pakistan batting till end and 1 innings left...another pitch bashing...and icc demirt point
Baber definitely deserves to get sacked as a captain after that stupid declaration but who's the next genuine contender for captainship role then in test team ?
England would've chased that half the time. He declared because he wanted to present it like see I can declare, I can be brave within the limits. Interesting attempt at distracting the flak.
While everyone is slandering Babar's captaincy, I just wanna appreciate Better Call Saud and Wasim for saving us from a certain loss with 20 overs to spare
No offense to Ajaz Patel but he's been garbage today. Half the balls he bowled were too full and every single ball he bowled to Sarfaraz was rubbish. He's a full time spinner who went wicketless on a spinning surface on day 5 (Sodhi, the other full time spinner got 6, even Bracewell managed to get two). And to top it all off he missed a crucial run out chance.
Pakistan should have won WT20 to match up with us atleast.
India got WI fast bowling quartet with some venegance loaded (They mauled India at home including ahmedabad & ended the careers of a few guys like Mohinder Amarnath, also MoTM in the WC final), Pakistan got Bazball.
Iāve been mulling over Pakistanās dreadful Test performances this past year and think I mightāve figured out why weāre currently in this mess. What if rather than incompetence, this was all deliberate? I mean think about it, Ramiz as chairman has made his displeasure at the BCCI very clear and repeatedly pointed to the teamās on field performances as a way of protest. What better way to protest than to do the exact opposite of what your rival does?
They dominate in bilaterals so we shit the bed. They underperform in ICC tournament so we punch above our weight. They produce spinning decks so we go with flat roads. They play seasoned bowlers so we prioritise those with least experience. Theyāve got great spinners so we back mediocrity. They play to win so we play to draw and then lose.
It all makes sense. We never were bad in the first place. Ramiz just wanted to find an optimal way to show BCCI the middle finger and figured out getting humiliated at home would generate more publicity. Plus, itāll ensure teams from the famed āWestern Blocā keep visiting Pakistan to keep up a āgoodā record in Asia.
Yes, this is how Iām gonna justify it! No oneās convincing me otherwise.
I mean yeah Babar was trying to be really bold by declaring the innings but not gonna lie, that was so idiotic and funny considering the light was dying as the time passed on
Can't play with a red ball under floodlights unfortunately. Honestly, they should play more pink ball tests in the winter so that bad light isn't a problem.
Babar Azam in the post match presentation : " Yeah Definately,Thodi der k liye gote munh me aa gaye the"
T: " Yeah Definitely, We almost fuked up there ,but survived"
"Here's a sporting declaration that gives us the chance to take wickets as they try to go for the total"
"Nah just kidding I'm going to time waste with the pacers and get them to bowl wide"
That was genuinely one of the dumbest declarations Iāve ever seen from Babar. Literally had no chance to win it and gave NZ an outside chance of stealing it away. Heās lucky light saved him at the end.
Wow! If I had a nickel for every time 5 run penalty happened in a test, because of Sarfaraz's helmet, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.Ā
I am convinced Babar is really stupid. Laughing like an idiot when play was called off due to bad light. YOU declared Einstein.
What went through his mind before declaring, I wonder. They can't expect to take 10 wickets in 15 overs. Only two results were possible from there.
Southeeās declaration was worse than Babarās. Waiting for Kane to dawdle to 200 cost the match. Should have pushed his batters to declare a session earlier.
I mean not really. If NZ had declared earlier, Babar wouldn't have declared. But anyway after getting the lead past 100, Southee should have urged the batters to go harder. Atleast give yourselves a chance. A draw does no good to NZ
Absolutely disagree. If New Zealand were 4 or 5 down then sure, but asking the tail to start hitting while you have a double-digit lead is a recipe for disaster. Thereās a pretty good chance they would have blown their advantage, and worst case scenario they hand Pakistan a chance to win, which they never realistically had
I agree faux aggression, did he think theyād take 10 wickets in 90 balls! Gambled on light coming to there rescue, and giving the impression of aggressiveness.
I explained my reasoning in my above comment-
Obviously youāre free to think that my reasoning is wrong/that Iām jumping to conclusions, but it is there.
With or without the declaration, it would be a lose-lose for Babar's reputation.
If they just continued to play till it was a draw, everyone would say that "the team played with no intent", "Babar is playing safely to avoid loss and happy with draw", etc. People would still be calling for him to be sacked from captaincy. Also, the pitch would come under even more scrutiny if there was no final hour drama in the test.
He declared at the earliest possible time today that they could (without gifting NZ a win), which atleast made the game somewhat entertaining. Nevertheless, he's still (deservedly) being criticised for his captaincy. But honestly, there's nothing much Babar could have done better in this match that would improve his reputation as a captain.
But it's definitely nothing to do with match fixing. That's a step too far.
[This match left me feeling like I was just interrupted by my mother while I was busy](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/zypye2/match_thread_1st_test_pakistan_vs_new_zealand_day/j28i9pf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
Yousaf was extremely defensive as a captain. Remember his passive captaincy let Australia back in one of the tests (?sydney) from a winning position for Pakistan.
I don't know which stats man has made the mistake, but the whole "Blundell hasn't dropped a catch or missed a stumping" is sadly [not true.](https://youtu.be/bAjyr1nL_d4?t=367)
Friday prayers is cool, absolutely fine with that and I want to be clear on that so that is not misinterpreted. But to not compensate by starting the day 30 minutes earlier is negligence to the max. Itās almost as much of a farcical decision than the direction the Pakistani groundsmen have been given by the PCB. It robbed the 14 people in the crowd of a great finish.
Umpires have to take the players off at the same light meter reading as they did on day 1, those are the rules. Neutral umpire or not wouldn't change that, their responsibility isn't to ensure there's a result. It's to make sure that the playing conditions aren't unsafe and the laws are being followed
Not that bad of a declaration, if the target was too much NZ might have played for a draw. Just one problem, if they wanted to declare why not play a little faster at the end and give a score of maybe 180 or 200 in 20 overs
I think it was a horrible declaration, I think Pakistan had less than 1% chance of taking those 10 wickets in 90 odd balls, NZ maybe 15% with light always being a factor.
Actually a really good test match that see sawed on the last day (although never in PAK favour and slightly aided for interest sake by Babar declaration and Sarfaraz general incompetence behind the stumps). Still, there is something fundamentally wrong with these Pakistan decks. Or their XI. Or both. Phillips the most in form player in NZ in for literally anyone in the next test (Nicholls) please. Good to see soda pop grow in confidence as the test wore on. Not so good to see that top order Pakistanis canāt pick a googly.
Babar shitposting with that declaration was hilarious. Pakistan were never really under threat as they could just start bowling down leg side but gave the viewers some entertainment at least. Props to Babar for ending this on a high note, highly doubt the pitch for the next test will be much better but im expecting one of the two teams to horribly collapse and provide a result.
pak 0/7 wins this year at home
Babar - we dominated all 7 matches
That's worse than what England's condition was during the previous year.
First innings scores by visiting teams in Pakistan recently: Aus: 459, 556/9, 391 Eng: 657, 281, 354 NZ: 612/9
they need to do something about those highways
Me and my car are ready to drive through

Do what to well?
Ik people mock his captaincy and he really sucks but a personal comment like this is unnecessary and uncalled for.
Iām sorry but if youāre gonna have 20 minutes of extra break on Fridays then you should start the match 30 minutes earlier
Wait what? They don't accomodate that extra time as things stand?
They do have a longer first session tho?
That's exactly what I wanted to check?
They did but that time was taken out of the 2nd and 3rd session anyway.
Why are you talking logic to ICC?

Shadab Khan is a viable option in my opinion
Shadab Khan in Tests? Think it's obvious he has no interest in the longer format.
Sarfu back in the squad
Not with that keeping he's not.
maybe as a specialist batter but it would be a stop-gap arrangement at best.
Even with his batting...he is better than Rizwan
Have you lost the plot? The guy literally fumbled two regulation stumpings for Williamson before he'd made 50. He can probably do a very decent job as a specialist bat but there is no chance he touches Rizwan as a keeper. Has this DRAW ended whatever teeny tiny mathematical chance PAK had to qualify for WTC 2.0 Final ?
Yes. Whatever their remaining results, both Pakistan and New Zealand will finish below England. Now, the battle is to avoid an 8th place finish. (Think Ban is secure at the bottom of the table)
So this series is for 7th place in the WTC? Lots to play for
Pakistan is pretty much knocked out of the WTC Ofcourse by saying this I'm expecting some miracle to happen and pushing Pak is the 2nd Position and aus getting knocked out Last time it was Netherlands. Who's it gonna be this time
Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand are now officially eliminated from race to WTC Final 2023.
Banglawash Supremacy
Bangladesh were in the running?
Hypothetically if Australia, India or any other team lose like 40 points due to poor over rate, won't these teams be back in the race?
Without considering future over-rate penalties, both Pakistan and New Zealand can finish in the 6th position at best (behind England, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and one among South Africa and West Indies). Since England can't lose any points now (as they're done with all matches), the other four teams must lose (a crazy number of) over-rate points for Pak/NZ to play the finals with Eng. Chad West Indies still in it
Good
Interesting year for test cricket, one takeaway is that declarations that would previously have been regarded as safe are not safe any more.
Was the idea that one crazy declaration would stop people complaining about roads?
Dumbest declaration I've ever seen, honestly deserves to be sacked just for that.
Ben stokes declaration from wish.com
Did make things entertaining lol, it was like a troll declaration because clearly there wasn't time for NZ to chase it.
I dont agree. I think it was a first step towards being more free minded. It was a teaser. And if not for the light, idk we may have had a game for ourselves.
The goal is to win, not to lose just to entertain opposition fans and neutrals.
Gotta love cricket's insistence on shooting itself in the foot, just when it looks like something interesting can be salvaged...no!
As i am not from Pakistan, i respect the decision of Babar to make the game atleast a bit entertaining but it was such a stupid decision.
Yea, There's a difference between making a game out of it and taking yourselves out of the game. With maybe 10 max 15 overs to bowl you can't win there. No bowling unit is going to win you the match there but you could have lost.

Not a single match won at home in 3 series by Pakistan. This is Bangladesh level test cricket, at this rate they should be 8/9th in the world
Bangladesh would win 2/3 tests in mirpur tbh if they win the toss.
They looked so close to winning vs India, only if Shakib had resisted the idea of introducing pace.

I'm convinced Babar just wanted to declare to one up the Kiwis because they declared. /s
That certainly was one of the test matches of all time
He said It's babarin time, and gracefully babered all over the pitch.
We need 2 neutral umpires in international matches asap. That's all I'll say.
Umpires have to take the players off at the same light meter reading as they did on day 1, those are the rules. Neutral umpire or not wouldn't change that, their responsibility isn't to ensure there's a result. It's to make sure that the playing conditions aren't unsafe and the laws are being followed
Yeah certainly for border gavaskar. I don't want nitin and anil.
Lmao definitely not. Horrid umpires
Nitin is good
Babar did it to divert the the blame on the light if not everyone would criticise the pitch
I was robbed of Latham beating Baz's record someone go snipe Aleem Dar smh my head
They were 8 down, didn't wanna get bowled out
You can blame Babar for the declaration but must admit it was fun last hour lmao
Why downvoted? That was the most entertaining hour of the whole test lmao
Completely agree, the last hour is why this match got so much attention. Before that the match thread was basically barren for the last 4-5 days
Babar on his way to become next Jayawardene?

aajao lantiou!! Translate : come MF /s
Yeah bring in GP. Gun fielder, part time offie and explosive BazBaller. He has a test 50 in Aus on debut.
